  • We visited Downforce Motorsports in Lugoff, SC and take the Superformance GT40 a drive. Car #98 features a Ford Aluminator 5.2 XS engine and is a reproduction true the livery of the #98 GT40 MKII driven by Ken Miles to victory at the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona. Car #98 was also featured in the 2019 "Ford vs Ferrari" film directed by James Mangold and staring Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and his British driver, Ken Miles (Christian Bale). If you want more information about this car or Holman Moody GT40 production, see our previous uploads.

I was told today that I have 6 to 8 months to live. I had, all my life, figured one day I would somehow find a way to take Ford GT 40 out to the track for bit. Guess I won't make it. Shame. I used to race motorcycles on the track back in the day because racing cars was just way beyond my income. So here I am, knowing I will be dead in a few months, and yet, I am finding joy listening to this beast of a beautiful car. Take Care everyone. Be good people. You never know when your time will be up. I am not even 58. And the end is already at my door. --C. TESTA.

In Ford Versus Ferrari They couldn't have picked 2 better people to play Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles.A Friend has a 1968 Shelby Mustang 500Kr.He went to some kind of A Car show Carroll was gonna be there. He wanted to have Carroll Sign the Glove Box.Carroll made him pull the hood first. He said he looked at something on the Firewall. He said I don't know what he was looking at.If he didn't know nobody would. He up in his 70 and I swear he wears Blue Oval underwear.I told him more than likely looking at something kept a Big Secret. If people knew they could forge it.Gas Monkey Garage I learned there's more 1967 Corvettes titled that were even made.Thats why he kept it secret.I saw one time Carroll said people would ask which one was his Favorite? Heartbeating!!!!! I saw the original at Daytona in 1996. And I said to a friend of mine. They were running the world sports cars back then. And I said there's not much difference between the world sports car and the Ford GT40 accept the technology. I seen the movie I love it. I wish Ken and mr. McLaren didn't pass away. And the Ford program didn't stop the way they did. It continued into the mid-1970s. I think they would have gave Porsche a run for their money. But she's a spectacular car. Right up there with the Porsche 917, 962 and Scott world sports car. The Acura NSX generation 1,2 DPI and GTP. The Audi Quattro the rally version. And Mitsubishi Evo 1,23,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10

If you have ever driven a RHD GT 40, it's tougher to get in and out of and somewhat less space on the right hand side. Stephen, I totally agree. The mirrors are a necessity for good side visibility on the street and track. If you look at the previous video, most all the GT40s are finished without any side view mirrors to save that for customer preferences and use. I do like the bullet aluminum fender mounted. However, they do not give you your best side views and impossible to adjust while driving. Thanks for your interest!!!

Yes, the delay before turning the key to ensure all pressures are up does get one's attention before it lights up!! The car had been parked for several weeks prior to this outing so to assist starting, you just wait a couple seconds to make sure everything is primed up. In-person it's even more impressive sounding.

Funny you should mention the model of this car. In the ‘60s I got and put together a plastic Revel (sp?) model of this car. It was about 8” long. Rubber tires, working doors and engine lid. Wheels turned and the suspension bit were there. All had to be assembled from pieces. The hardest part was assembling that spaghetti tangled mess of an exhaust system. The neatest model I a made. Then, they were all trashed when I went off to college. I was sad to see them gone. Not too long ago I got to see and talked to the owner of one of these “duplicate” cars at Lime Rock Park. It was in full race car regalia and was being raced in the vintage car racing. Very exciting.

@@alexpritchard7879 Thanks, Alex. Take a look at the Aluminator 5.2 XS. Here's the data sheet from Ford.
Ford Performance has taken the technology and hardware developed for the Shelby GT350 Mustang and has created the ultimate naturally aspirated, 5.2L cross-plane crankshaft crate engine. With a rating of 580 horsepower at 7,800 rpm, the new Aluminator 5.2 XS is the most powerful naturally aspirated modular crate engine ever built by Ford Performance. This is the worthy successor of our previous rendition-the "A50XS". Every Aluminator is hand assembled by the same technicians that build the Mustang Cobra Jet drag racing engines. Premium aftermarket components are used to ensure durability like; unique Manley® connecting rods, ARP® rod bolts, Mahle® forged pistons, forged steel crankshaft sprocket, and billet oil pump gears. Unique components developed specifically for the Cobra Jet racing program are used including Cobra Jet short runner-high RPM intake manifold, 1517 CFM dual 65mm Cobra Jet throttle body, and high RPM pulse ring. Ford Performance Engineers developed a balanced combination of high end, 580 horsepower and strong mid-range torque with the Cobra Jet intake manifold, unique camshafts and fully CNC ported GT350 cylinder heads.
