During the early 70's when I was a teenager (before Cobras became million dollar cars) I got to go for a ride in a real 427 Cobra! It was cramped, uncomfortable, windy, hot, a stiff and rough ride and incredibly loud . . The best automotive experience I've ever had!!

My grandmother was best friends with a lady whose husband owned a hardwood flooring manufacturing plant, Harris -Tarkett, they were very wealthy and had a son who was a very cool guy, he had a 1965 AC SHELBY COBRA 427. Allan their son was a mountain climber, and went on and expedition to Mount Killamenjarro, tragically he was killed in 1982. His Cobra sat in the garage for 21 years, under a car cover, his father had died a few years after he did and in 2003, his mother was going to go live with her daughters family in Oregon, and wanted to sell the car. I had over the years kept it washed and detailed, filled with gas etc at his parents request because they knew that i was an avid car enthusiast and had several hot rods myself, so she asked me if i would help her find a buyer and get it ready to sell. Naturally i jumped at the opportunity and told her i would make sure everything got taken care of properly. I took the wheels off and had new tires put on them, i put new brakes on it, changed the oil, filters plugs , wires , cap , rotor points everything , its purred like a freakin Lion!!!! I not only got to drive it for a test run around their neighborhood, but after i found a buyer that i felt like was legitimate and honest, i got to drive it from Johnson City, Tn to Charlotte, NC. TO MEET THE BUYER AND CLOSE THE DEAL. I WILL ONLY SAY THIS, THERE IS NO WAY TO DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE, NO WAY TO DESCRIBE HOW POWERFUL AND FAST THAT CAR ACTUALLY WAS!!!! IF FORCED TO LAY IT OUT IN TWO WORDS, THEY WOULD BE ..... HOLY SHIT!!!!

Great to see Ken Miles after the recent Le Mans ‘66 film brought him into the public’s gaze. He is a forgotten man here in the UK and never received the recognition he truly deserves. Was interesting to see him with James Drury who sadly passed away recently. My mums favourite actor from his “Virginian” days alongside “Trampas” Doug McClure. She never missed an episode and I remember fondly watching as a kid!
So many happy memories in one old television show! This needs to be show in every rest home. The car guys and gals would be in heaven!
I came to see ken in the cobra. Didn't know I was in for an awesome history lesson with some incredible footage, and with Loyd Bridges!!!

Same here, I expected a few minutes of Ken Miles, this other stuff is a nice surprise. It looks like they span a few years, in the mid 60's. Jenkins Chevy II is shown at the 66 Winternationals. I think it was only that paint scheme for the 66 Winternationals, and he was in an all white car in 67.

Englishman in an English sports car. AC Cobra, Jag E-Type, Ausitn Healey 300, Aston Martin DB5, the list goes on. The Brits really knew how to design and build cars back then, and still do!

When I was 6 years old in 1966 I got a slot car set, probably 1:24 or 1:32, with a Shelby Cobra and a C2 Corvette. It didn't last long and when my parents couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, they threw it out. Fast forward about 6 years and I discovered a friend had an HO-scale slot car set and I was hooked. My first set was just before Aurora came out (at the moment, can't remember that brand name), so, my set had some realistic (and not futuristic-looking or European) cars - including the Ford GT like in the "Ford vs Ferrari" movie. It is green so naturally I named it "Froggy". In high school a friend sold me his set and my collection grew to about 125 feet of track and about 40-50 cars. I still have all of that in storage and need to move into a place where I have room to set it up. I am not really a car buff, so, I did not know the history of the GT until I saw the movie about a year ago and recognized it. While watching "Ford vs Ferrari", I couldn't get over how weird it's rear end looked in the races.
Lloyd voice over "hey, how about those wild pants. Actual Fabian is wearing protective racing chaps ... off the races." What a different era with these segments. Thank you for sharing these archives as they're a treasure trove of goodness.

It was cool to see Ken off the track and having fun with his son. Something that never gets shown. Also, imagine riding shotgun in that Cobra with no windshield/race screen at full speed on the track! I'm a little too tall for mine, and at 70 mph on the highway my forehead gets quite the breeze sticking up above my full sized windshield. Lol.

@@SuperHeliboy The Hot Wheels debuted in 1968. The Silhouette was an existing show car built by Bill Cushenberry. Cushenberry also built the Car Craft Dream Rod which Hot Wheels marketed as 'Python.' Some other well known show cars and rods made the sixteen cut. Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's 'Beatnik Bandit," Tognotti's "King T" marketed as "Hot Heap, " the Alexander Brothers' "Deora."
@@jaydavis155 Of course I built the 1/25 scale AMT model kits of the Silhouette, the Deora and the drag version of the Piranha. And had slot car versions of a Chaparral and a Cheetah.

To think that Ken Miles died at the Riverside track not long after this, driving Ford’s J-7, and Jim Drury the actor with him only died last week, early April 2020

This has to be 1965 ish. Breedlove's crash was Oct 64 I think, but at the end it looks like a 66 Impala wagon.
He's rumored to have said "And for my next trick I'm going to set myself on fire" upon exiting the wreck...

Thanks so much for sharing this vintage film. No,, I did not see it in it's heyday but now I am happy I have had the opportunity to see it all these years after it's release. RIP all these wonderful automotive enthusiasts who we elders recognise as the big screen stars of our era. Most we did not know were enthusiasts.

From 1966 (based on the Indianapolis 500 race). Although, the Breedlove speed record was from 1964. Very cool find.

Very enjoyable. Great to see some of those show cars actually being driven. Ken Miles is just a small section though.
Lloyd is driving Bill Cushenbery's Silhouette, Point Sur Lighthouse, and Bixby Bridge in the credits sequence.
Not a bad effort but not as clean as Winfeilds Reactor,of the same era .I first saw the reactor on "bewitched" .
I saw Ken do it ! I also got my first dune buggy ride in "Biggus" the twin rear tire buggy shown,with regular street rims on it !! 427 Ford Side oiler.

It was the Silhouette, a show car built by Bill Cushenberry in 1962. It debuted at the 1963 Oakland Roadster Show, and earned Cushenberry his first Master Builder Award. In 1968, it was also one of the first sixteen Hot Wheels cars. The Beatnik Bandit, another first sixteen Hot Wheel car, was built by "Big Daddy" Ed Roth who created the Rat Fink tee shirt art work craze.

Ken was a brilliant driver and engineer. Nothing against Shelby but Ken was the brains behind the Cobra and Carroll was the salesman.

You mean the mall was built ON TOP of Riverside Intl Raceway. There was no mall back then. It was unincorporated, and was called the town of Sunnymead.

I wonder what it took for Bob Petersen to get Bill Cushenberry to allow the "Silhouette" show car to be on this program. Cushenberry was notoriously protective of his creations.
Back then I had the Hot Wheels version of that car. Thought it was cool when I was 8 years old but what a silly contraption in real life!
