It isn't possible to do a complete upgrade because Windows 1.0 is 16-bit only, and Windows 11 is 64-bit only, and you can't upgrade 16-bit or 32-bit to 64-bit, so you would have to do a clean install of Windows 11 x64 once you have upgraded to Windows 10 x86. However, it is possible to upgrade Windows Server 2003 x64 to Windows 11 x64 without a clean install.

@WolframaticAlpha That’s still a bad excuse for the UX inconsistencies. Linux and macOS are ahead of Windows in this department: you compile a GTK2 app from forever ago and run it on Linux and chances are it’ll match the theme of other GTK2/3 apps on the system. Same with Qt. the visuals can be updated (sanely) without breaking older apps.

I guess they might actually be dropping the numbering from the name. If you paid attention to the install screen, on the first screen that contained the new logo it said: Windows. No number. It would go in line with their windows as a service target. And since their are delivering a lot as a service through Azure, I guess that's the end goal with Windows as well. That's why the build number will probably continue to start with 10, like 10.1.21455 or something as shown in the video and the versions will be named with year and month or half of the year of launch as they are now like 21h1. I mean it's stupid to deliver Windows as an ongoing service and call it by a number.

there are already kinda 3 settings pannels, tho the oldest one is kinda in the back and used as a "backbone" to suppliement the other 2
im talking about these small windows that open when you change some very specific setting (for example the sounds) - i think it originates from very old windows versions and were originally opened trough start menu.
then the control panel came, which added more options and kinda segregated these settings and added new ones.
and then came "Windows Settings" which is very minimalistic, not intuitive, and sends you to control panel for most of the specific settings.

My theory is that this is Microsoft's attempt at stealing the thunder from Chrome OS. For clarity, in 2020, due to the pandemic, Chrome OS has seen a massive boost in market share surpassing macbooks and digging into in Windows laptop's territory, hence the reason for the dropped Windows 10X, but they don't want to see all that work they've put into developing 10X go to waste, so they just had to merge it with mainline Windows 10. This 'new version' of Windows just looks like a blatant attempt at copying Chrome OS.

    3. You to appear in a podcast from On MSFT! I listened to the whole section with you in it, and I came just for that!

@@halvaraspegren7635 Nope. Windows 7 is far superior. I am still using windows 7 on all of my machines, except 1 that has second SSD for the things that need DX12. Windows 10 is a good OS in it's core but all the stupid addwere, spaywere, bloatwere and crappy settings menus make it absolute hell to use unless you are the most basic of users and you don't care about the condition or privacy of your system. Worst of all is the updates that forcibly re-enable all the shit you removed just the last update and brake something every other week.
At work I have to administer a bunch of PCs. The Windows 7 machines are 6 times as many as the Windows 10 ones and yet 90% of the issues are from the windows 10 PCs. Nearly every time after an update that broke something, closed some connection to a server, or just removed a feature that is mandatory for a program to work. The other 10% of issues that the Windows 7 machines get are exclusively ID10T cases.
The only Windows 10 version that is somewhat stable/controllable is the long term integration one. At this point I'd rather use the Windows server equivalent of Windows 10 than Windows 10. Until we get an OS that is bloatware free, and is designed with PCs not portable devices in mind, doesn't make the settings a hell to operate and only gets essential security updates no Windows will beat 7.

There’s probably loads going on behind the scenes in this release (fingers crossed for ARM support), but what we’re seeing here really doesn’t justify a new version of Windows. Everything here could have been pushed as a Windows 10 update. Even the redesigned Start menu experience.
There’s so much inconsistency in Windows 10 with critical functions left seemingly unchanged from their Windows 95, XP, Vista or 7 implementations. Even just porting all of the functionality of Control Panel into Settings would go a long way to making Windows seem more of a cohesive and complete experience, rather than a perpetual open beta.
