I'm pretty sure this is the FIRST time I've seen Doug NOT IN A BLACK SHIRT!!! Looks good dude! :) I'm very interested to see this wall mount toilet -- never seen one in a home, and can't wait to see it done. :) I like your bathroom layout -- makes sense to me! We're also anti-huge-vanity people.
I know everyone is saying in the comments don’t explain yourselves but just kind of taking another approach… I appreciate hearing the thought process they go through. I personally agree they should design for themselves but I do really appreciate the break downs so as we start our Reno with no experience we can gain tidbits of why. I really enjoy your channel thank you for taking the time to go through things with the viewer to help us in our own projects.
I love it. Ashley you tell ‘em. “Or they can buy another property “. Ashley’s attitude like “duh” we can actually take turns brushing our teeth. Love it!
Hi Doug and Ashley I love the fact that you took the time to do a floor plan. You guys do you...authentic and DIYfferent. Loved the art work on the floorplan too! You are both such a hardworking couple with good work ethics. Looking forward to the next video...keep safe please and God bless your beautiful family🤲💐💓
as a person who lives in Florida I love the no vanity, no big counter less places for critters to hide... the wall mount sink/toilet seems so slick and clean and spacious
Never, ever design for "the next" guy. Because, like you, they're going to do exactly what your doing... making it work for them. They may not want cathedral ceilings or a big bathroom, etc... you design for your wants and needs. Your plan looks good. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, they're not living there or paying the bills. Well done you.
@Maartje Goede I get what you are saying, but to constantly be thinking about the next guy or how much you can realize in the sale of your home in the future is not living in the now. In the '70s, '80s, '90s, and beyond did anyone cared about resale value? I don't think so otherwise we wouldn't be removing wallpaper, carpet, etc... now. Make your home your home. Everything else is cosmetic and can be changed and will be changed.
So true. I was warned not to spend too much on my renovations. I put in a new kitchen and 2 bathrooms. That was 11 years ago. It didn't increase the value of my home but it has been money well spent. Everything I did is still in great condition. I'm in Queensland, Australia.
I agree with your view 100% because my house design was done by my wife and I and we selected the location of everything and when it was completed always some persons didn’t agree with our choices but in the end it works for our needs and still is working after 23 years.
You are absolutely correct you should always design and build your home for you. Ashley you are spot on when you say the next person can buy another property.
First of all I have to say I love Maverick's artwork on your plans! So cute! I love your bathroom layout. Bathrooms nowadays are ridiculously big and a waste of space. I like how yours is a nice, functional room and that is has a window. I like having a window in my bathroom for light and fresh air.
I have watched you since you lived in the little house in west Indiana. Every place you have lived, you invested hard work and material improve the home so you can take the next step. If this place is going to be your forever home or another another stepping stone to your forever home, design it to suit yourselves. You always have simple clean designs that can be easily altered by a new home owner. Doug always makes sure the bones of the home are good and that is the most important part. You two make a good team and I look forward to seeing your Florida home when it is finished. Phil
The two of you have so much wisdom for your years. We live in a world that tries to sale us on more and more, when less is still best. You haven't bought into that and are designing for your own way of living. Ashley, your beauty shines through, you don't need to cover it with makeup. Love you guys. From a elderly lady [RN] who designed her cottage to age in, simple living is good.
I love that you put up the floor plan...and I totally agree about a single sink bathroom. I never could figure out why people needed double sinks. I am 82 yrs. old and have never shared the bathroom, not as a child nor as a married adult. I could see it if you had a large number of children trying to get ready for school, perhaps a couple of them could share to save time. This is going to be a great house when you finish. Have a Blessed day.
My daughter complains everyday about the toilet next to the tub and I love keeping everything off the floor for easier cleaning ! Don't let anyone "should" on your ideas, you two are amazingly creative and smart
My small home built in 1930 had very little kitchen counter space, hardly any electric outlets, and no closet in the entry for coats etc. I have a simple antique oak wardrobe in living room for a coat closet, and another in master bedroom for additional clothes storage. They look nice.
I like the idea of building the shower in its own enclosure with a separate door from the bathroom. This allows a person to use the toilet if they need to while a person is in the shower (how many times have you needed to use the toilet but had to wait for someone in the shower to finish?). I'm not suggesting that you do the same - I'm just sharing my likes. As to the "no closets" idea, wardrobes are common in Britain - you'll rarely see a built-in closet. I like the concept because it allows a person to be flexible in the bedroom layout. After a time, sometimes a change is needed and it's more restrictive to have to consider a built-in closet.
When you design you home always do what is best for you. My neighbor did so much work to their home looking for resale value. In the end they didn’t recoup their money. When they sold the new neighbors gutted the house. Be blessed
Same thing for my next door neighbor. Everything they did was complicating, like they wanted to do every "Pinterest" idea they could stuff in. New neighbors are fixing it for their lives which involves a LOT of time and money - not counting the extra they paid for the stuff that didn't help. I'm all for clean and good working order, and let the buyers do their decor on a blank palette :)
I love this idea. I can't wait to see how you plan the rest of the house, too. You sure have your work cut out for you, but its going to be so worth it! In a year from now, it will be a whole new property! Have a fun weekend!
Random thoughts…”my opinion” having all the plumbing on one wall is so good, no pipes running on an exterior wall! Ashley your hair is looking so full and it is working for you, I really like the top bun on you,!
So are we going to mention the GREEN SHIRT!? I love your simple approach to clothes, not buying more than you need. But it's fun to see you in something new and what a nice color.
You're doing what you want. That is the way it should be. And the wall mount sink and toilet excellent. You don't have to crawl on the floor the clean behind the toilet. " I really hate that" so this way mop the floor and done. When I watch you videos I always think there is a method to the madness. You do what you want, what works for you. Don't worry about viewers, the ones like me who are happy for you like me. Can't wait to see it finished. Just remember there are people out there who are not happy unless they are putting out hate. So pay them no mind. Your true viewers love what you do. 🙏🙏👍👍👏👏🏡
I would just say, “Stop explaining why you do what you do and concern about what everyone else thinks” ….. it is your space and your design…. I love the fact that you don’t feel a bathroom has to be ginormous… my Bathroom is about the size of an Outhouse lol and suites me just fine. I mean what does one need to do in a bathroom? 🙄 amazing forethought!
I love your philosophy of designing for YOUR needs and desires. Thanks for sharing the mental processes behind your plans. I'm enjoying watching as the 'plan' comes together.
We love our simple pedestal sink and antique medicine cabinet. Zero storage. We're not makeup/hair people either. I'm not going to design a house for someone else. It's our home.❤️
I too, am really sick of running into my toilet when I get out of the shower. I really like the bathroom layout! Your house is going to be so beautiful. Can’t wait to see how everything is “created”! God bless y’all 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸
I love keeping things simple and easy to take care of it. Modern houses are too complicated. We live in a small home and we make it convenient for us with easy cleaning surfaces. Nice job Doug and Ashley on your design.
We took the tub out and put an awesome walk-in shower in place. No room for both. People told us that we need to have a tub to make it more saleable..... That was 20 years ago.... no plans on moving yet! The next owner can change it for a tub easy enough. You are right to build for how you want it! Enjoy the house.
I look forward every day for a video from my favorite family ! More kids please 😉 love hearing and seeing them play together ! You are raising great kids that will become awesome adults ! Love from Shreveport Louisiana ❤️💕❤️
Your reasons for your bathroom design make a lot of sense to me. I also like a window in the bathroom. Natural light and makes the room feel bigger, as will the wall hung sink and toilet. And who can argue against easier to clean! It's going to be awesome!
I do like the layout it reminds me of our basement bathroom 6 x 12, we lined up tub, vanity and toilet leaving walking space to each , i love the layout . We did get a vanity because we had no where to put linen storage so all the towels and TP are under the sink. Lots of space, bright and sunny with the window and used cork flooring on the cold cement floor. You are so right to cater to your needs. We took out our upstairs tub and did walk in shower and the tub is in the basement for the grandkids and don't care about the owners down the road.
You both are working so hard on your home and i enjoy watching you creating it. When you have time maybe you could show us so of those birds and other wildlife that are on your place that you are so blessed with your very on wildlife preserve how wonderful to see all the different beings that you share your place with. When you start your kitchen it will be interesting to see how it comes together and the rest of you home as well. Keep on keeping on .
I personally think you should build it the way you like it. If you want or need to change it later, then you can. You can't live in your house and be comfortable if you've designed it for someone that "might" one day live there. I can't wait to see how everything turns out. You all seem so much happier and lighter since you've moved. I can tell you are enjoying yourselves.
I completely agree. As an interior designer myself, I believe in making your home a reflection of your personality and making it fulfill your needs. A home is something you live in. A house is an investment. Somehow we've confused the two. Also, treat yourselves to an electric towel rack!
So smart planning for your own needs , I hate when people do stuff for resale when it doesn't reflect them . This is your home , love how your treating it as such . As the double sink , my husband and I put double sinks in and NEVER used it , just to clean it and what a waste of money , smart choice .Waiting on edge of my seat to see more .
I completely agree about the shower and toilet. The plans for the bathroom are great. It's so much nicer to just have space in front of everything in there.
I have never been a huge fan of closets. I like to move my room and furniture around to the seasons of the year, catching the sun and viewing the outdoors from my rooms. Having anchored spots and off-limit spots really makes that difficult. Having a blank slate to work with every time is awesome. I love simplicity, even in the bath. You can make a big impact with textiles rather than big bulky units. You all are doing great. Seems like our taste is pretty exact.
Doug! You’re not in black. You’re always wearing black, you’re the TH-cam Man in Black! House is looking great. Good job to you and Ashley on continued hard work. Florida looks good on y’all.
I agree. I also agree that Doug looks good in green, and the beard trim did wonders. It took me a bit to figure out what the change was. Doing and looking good, Doug.
Very nice design Doug and Ashley. I agree I want to brush my teeth alone. Also if you have a wall you can have a space to hang the towels to dry. I also need a window in my bathroom I hate to be closed in I want natural light. Everything is looking well designed. Thank you for sharing.
i hate walking out of a shower facing the toilet. i also hate looking through the door and seeing the toilet. I hate my towel hitting the toilet and this would suit me the best too. You can also put a towel rail on the wall facing the shower and then the towels stay away from the toilet. I agree with Ashley on this issues. Always love your designs. I think it is your home your choices and when you come to sell it the new owners will put their mark on it.
It would have been cool to move the door ways to the bedroom and the living room down a couple feet to add a linen closet at the end of the hall directly in from of the bathroom. Love all of the videos lately though !! I’m sure you’ll come up with a diyfferent solution ! 😊
I've been watching your videos and I see how well planned you do things Great job Love ☺️ the color shirt you look so handsome. Love Maverick's art work💞
YEAH Finally a wall mounted toilet and I like your idea about how you design the master bathroom.. to your needs! Also that build in medicine cabinet above the sink maybe add some sockets for electric toothbrush, hairdryer etc The sockets will be 'hidden' but sill useful
Love your vision. I think the bathroom layout is perfect. Obviously your design choices must be good you sold the house in Michigan right. Make your home suit your needs.
Doug owns different colored shirts??? Say it ain't so, Joe!!!LOL!!! Really glad to see it! Towel racks are great for immediate use but what about towel storage in master bathroom? A built-in above toilet? Really nice wardrobes can get pricey. Maybe refinishing a less expensive one could be an option?
Thrift store shopping is at an all-time great past time! You never know what you might find and something perfect to your tastes. Many folks are doing this today! I like the idea of being able to move them around to change the layout. Closets are so permanent and get filled with things that turn into storage junk.
Another thing to keep in mind as far as designing for yourself & not others is that's what you did in Michigan & you most definitely didn't have any trouble selling.
Yep. Cause simple but eye pleasing, and common sense practicality are very attractive and sometimes something you didn't know you we wanted untill you're introduced to it.
I think it's crazy NOT to design a home for your needs!! Why spend the effort to live in someone else's idea of a good layout, you may be tall or use a wheelchair or just be lazy. I installed an electric outlet high up over our toilet, because my husband like to read his tablet and charge it in the bathroom, I've had stairs built with low steps (6 inch) and a beverage station with a small sink in the dining room, I use extra space in our downstairs laundry room so it is now a kitchette (sink with cabinets and a small fridge and microwave.) The electricians and the plumbers thought I was nuts, but it makes the house so much easier for husband and I to live in and to have guests over. If I get less money when we sell the place, oh well -- we actually are able to live easily here, that's what matters to me. And I have always, since I've been 15, had a very small desk in all my bedrooms to use as a vanity, it makes more sense to dry your hair and do makeup sitting comfortably instead of leaning over a sink in a steamy bathroom.
Ashley, great minds think alike! Deodorant and toothpaste is all I use too. No makeup and as soon as Doug said 7" I thought toilet paper storage. When you eventually move from there and the perspective new owner says... "I like the design, I thought that getting out in front of the toilet too is annoying, I like what you've done here. The best thing about Doug and Ashley's home reno team is not only is it done right it's documented. I'm sure the new people in your old house are loving it and not at all worried about winter drafts, ot rodents!
I agree with you on designing your space the way YOU desire it. Don’t worry about the future owners because everyone I know that’s bought a house has went in and gutted it and fixed it the way they want. I totally redid my bathroom as it only had a 4 foot tub (not kidding) now I have a two person walk in shower, a pedestal sink, high rise toilet, handy if you’re tall or handicapped. Plus my sink & toilet is black porcelain, unusual, yes but it’s what I wanted. Don’t care what other people think.
If it was me I would make the entire shower area a shower. It would require a smaller piece of glass for the door and it would be shareable lol. You guys are doing a great job and in the end do what you want 😁👍👍
I love the custom cabinet idea! I would totally do another one above toilet for additional storage but instead of a mirror front, do an interchangeable wall hanging so it's hidden and still able to be updated if you get sick of the picture!! 😁 I'd also like to add that I wish you were still in NY! I would make the trip to visit you guys and maybe you'd let me help you renovate to curb my insatiable appetite for it! 🤭🤪
it's your home ! control of it's creation is such a gift; own it and fly. You two have redone and rehabbed plenty of other spaces; this one seems like you maybe putting down roots.
I love your bathroom design... you have wall space to hang towels. This way you'll have a wall between the toilet & shower. Plus, all that wall space is much needed! You two doing a fantastic job on designing & reno! Love your show/channel!
I'm really looking forward to everything to come in your new home. It already seems that you're completely changing from modern minimalism in your previous home. Love watching your ideas come to fruition!
Ashley, that color looks so good on you! It goes with your hair color and eye color perfectly. Looks like linen too, which couldn't be better for Florida heat! I love how the two of you make design decisions. People clearly after my own heart!
Wow Doug I think this is the first time I've seen you with a different color other than black. Nothing against black, I like the simplicity of wearing all black BUT the green looks good on ya.
Your house is going to be crowded with all those pirates living there! Lol
😆
haha :D 🏴☠️

@@cherylcallahan5402 Hi Cheryl!
Ashley I just love you forthrightness! “Or they can just buy a different house!” Love you guys. I keep you in my prayers always.
I do like a bit of a vanity, but otherwise, my big vanity gets very cluttered.
I like the green shirt instead of the usual black. Always enjoy your videos.
I know everyone is saying in the comments don’t explain yourselves but just kind of taking another approach… I appreciate hearing the thought process they go through. "Or they can buy another property " in her sweet little voice.
AMEN Ashley!
That's the right attitude, the house isn't for the "next guy", it's for them NOW. 😊
I’m seriously convinced there is nothing y’all can’t do!! Y’all work so well together!
I love it. Ashley you tell ‘em. “Or they can buy another property “. Ashley’s attitude like “duh” we can actually take turns brushing our teeth. Love it!

I agree. The next person would probably be glad it was done right period. At most the behind the sheet rock. That the wall is level.

Looking good. I especially enjoyed Mavericks pirate ship plans for the rest of the house.💕💕💕💕
I would love to see Maverick show his pirate ship plans for the rest of the house 😃 💖

Liking the new green tee Doug.

I'd love a wall-mounted toilet!! I HATE cleaning the bottom of the toilet!!!

As long as everything is to code, you're good. Center of toilet to vanity has to be 15 inches at least. It's your house design it however you like.
Agreed.
I love your philosophy of designing for YOUR needs and desires. Thanks for sharing the mental processes behind your plans. I'm enjoying watching as the 'plan' comes together.

Love the design.
Think of a pocket door for the bathroom entrance.
Can’t wait to see the finish bathroom.
Makes sence, not only just for you. Great design!
I love keeping things simple and easy to take care of it. Modern houses are too complicated. We live in a small home and we make it convenient for us with easy cleaning surfaces. Nice job Doug and Ashley on your design.
You always do an exceptional job !!
I’m looking forward to seeing the finished bathroom!!! Do what makes your life easier ❤️
I live the idea of a floating sink and toilet. It’s so easy to clean under them.
We took the tub out and put an awesome walk-in shower in place. No room for both. People told us that we need to have a tub to make it more saleable..... I actually like that you do it all for yourselves and using Ashleys' input to what she really wants then you execute it. LOVE it!
You guys are so talented and hard working. I love the kid drawings on the layout board.
Your reasons for your bathroom design make a lot of sense to me. I also like a window in the bathroom. Natural light and makes the room feel bigger, as will the wall hung sink and toilet. And who can argue against easier to clean! It's going to be awesome!

I love the idea of having natural light in the bathroom. The design fits perfectly the way you have it laid out.

The thing with wall mounted toilet and sink, there is no need to get down there and scrub the floor around the floor mounting.
I love the idea of wardrobes. You can move them around if you want to change the room.
This is definitely the best way to renovate a home is to make it what you want and your needs. It will look amazing ❤️
Maybe you could also build a built in cabinet for towel storage on the towel rack wall. Awesome video guys
I completely agree. As an interior designer myself, I believe in making your home a reflection of your personality and making it fulfill your needs. A home is something you live in. A house is an investment. Somehow we've confused the two.

Never thought of it that way. I love that idea.
Ashley's jump cuts when Doug was screwing in the blocking was so on point!
Doug! You’re not in black. You’re always wearing black, you’re the TH-cam Man in Black! House is looking great. Good job to you and Ashley on continued hard work. Florida looks good on y’all.
Great layout, guys...like the way you really think things through! Looking forward to the progress! BTW, Doug, green looks great on you!
I agree. I also agree that Doug looks good in green, and the beard trim did wonders. It took me a bit to figure out what the change was. Doing and looking good, Doug.
I love the idea of a floating toilet for cleaning. That’s my grossest thing to clean.
same here and it needs to be done every other day. What a joy it would be to just make a pass with the mop here and there.
Very nice design Doug and Ashley. I agree I want to brush my teeth alone. Also if you have a wall you can have a space to hang the towels to dry. I also need a window in my bathroom I hate to be closed in I want natural light. Everything is looking well designed. Thank you for sharing.
In older homes, ladies did their primping at a dressing vanity in the bedroom... I miss those.
i hate walking out of a shower facing the toilet. i also hate looking through the door and seeing the toilet.
Hi Doug &Ashly, yes I agree. It’s your house to enjoy and the design makes sense. Have a happy week. 💁🏼♀️👩🦳
Love it ! It's going to look great!
It would have been cool to move the door ways to the bedroom and the living room down a couple feet to add a linen closet at the end of the hall directly in from of the bathroom. Love all of the videos lately though !! I’m sure you’ll come up with a diyfferent solution ! 😊
Doug good to see you in your trendy green tee and levis
Looks like Maverick has his own ideas on that blueprint.
I am so excited to see how the house is going to be. You always have the best ideas.
😂 🌞 % jerry f I never even noticed !!!!!! lol lol lol lol lol. !!!!! Ya gotta love 'em! Every so often they come up with somethin' new!!!!!!!
Great ideas and plans! A house is a very personal thing. Make it your own!
I like that layout a lot. i might steal it as I design my own cabin.
I'd also like to add that I wish you were still in NY! I would make the trip to visit you guys and maybe you'd let me help you renovate to curb my insatiable appetite for it! 🤭🤪
easy clean master bath!!! excellent! 🙌🏼🥰
it's your home ! control of it's creation is such a gift; own it and fly. You two have redone and rehabbed plenty of other spaces; this one seems like you maybe putting down roots.
Good to see the kiddos ideas added to the floor plan 😀
I love your bathroom design... you have wall space to hang towels. This way you'll have a wall between the toilet & shower. Plus, all that wall space is much needed! You two doing a fantastic job on designing & reno!
Love your show/channel!
I'm really looking forward to everything to come in your new home. It already seems that you're completely changing from modern minimalism in your previous home. Love watching your ideas come to fruition!
I'm with you.Make the house work for you!
Ashley, that color looks so good on you! It goes with your hair color and eye color perfectly. Looks like linen too, which couldn't be better for Florida heat! I love how the two of you make design decisions. People clearly after my own heart!
Thanks! And yep, it's a linen shirt from Belarus :)
I love the design for the bathroom, I am glad you are designing it for your needs and not the next buyer!! Thanks for the video and info!!
Wow Doug I think this is the first time I've seen you with a different color other than black. Nothing against black, I like the simplicity of wearing all black BUT the green looks good on ya.
