This coming from someone who has never seen a Tony Leung movie before, I understand now why he's so famous in Asia. The dude blew me away with his performance. So much gravitas.
RIP to the stunt coordinator Brad Allan, the first ever non-Asian person to make it into Jackie Chan's stunt team and the badass that brought this new martial arts energy to the MCU.
It was pretty dumb, really. Mandarin is used to refer to many things from Northern China. The original name was something akin to "the Chinese Übermensch", not a great name but little to do with the fruit.
@@AnnaZnna Tom was correct. Many things were called Mandarin in Qing (Manchurian) Dynasty. It's referred to Manchurian court officials, the dialect spoken at the imperial court (today's Mandarin Chinese), the collar of Manchurian robes (Mandarin collar).

@@SerAkimbo yes i agree! that whole scene of him meeting peter as the prom date and driving them to school. i feel like we all felt that tension and thats something you cant capture in other mcu movies. of course we know spiderman is gonna win at the end of the movie, but peter parker made a huge sacrifice in that moment and you felt it. the vulture nearly played him like a fiddle and was really a threatening force to peter.
Michael Keaton always seems to have something burning just below the surface in which he could become unhinged at any moment. That makes him inevitably a great villain choice.
@@thomasrockbottom2907 have you even watched Tony Leung's performance in all of his films. His films alone stand as one of the finest of asian Cinema, which shows his versatality. He's hands down the best actor of Asian Cinema. Brando likewise is the one of the best actors in Hollywood. I'm not comparing both of them, just pointing out the fact that Tony Leung is a gift to world cinema and should be recognised globally, equally to the level of Brando if not more. @@aishikamitra yes the father can have a good story but when the supporting character has more screen presence and a better backstory and motivation it's a big problem.
I actually feel like "The mandarin" is the main character. He's not a villain first and foremost, more like an antagonist and he goes through the biggest character development. When Shang-Chi finally wields the rings you strongly feel like he's similar to his mom. And that wouldn't make sense if there was more focus on Shang-Chi's thoughts. But you really feel like you're the father seeing his mother in him.
this. it felt more like it was the mandarin's origin story rather than shang-chi's. and props to the actor - for what he was given i actually think he carried it more than it was meant to be.
Wow I was blown away how good this movie was! Shang Chi is one of my favorite Marvel movie to date. I saw it for a second time tonight and it was just as incredible the second time. The fight scenes and cinematography are top tier. The entire cast is spectacular and I can’t wait to watch it again!
I just wanted to say that the MCU movies are also known for their human story that they bring. Like Antman is all about the family, the moral dilemma in civil war (to sign or not to sign), the power of the strong against the weak in Avengers 1, the responsibility of the strong to take care of the weak in Black Panther etc. It's not just the big CGI battle at the end.
nah, it's always a generic story that's used to sell more. cgi battles appeal to a large portion of the audience and they cover this action with a worn-out theme. it's nothing new and is super polished to make sure it's not gonna create any controversies or moral dilemmas. bad guys are shallow business men, good guys sometimes fall but always get up thanks to their friends and family, it's not even hard to guess the plot from the opening scene. this is not real life, this is how you would want it'd be. and therefore it's not human either, it's too basic for that. it's just designed to make humans satisfied, cause if they told something more real you'd probably be disturbed.
@@howdymynamesjae That is your point of view, I think It's the idea from real human experience which makes me think of different circumstances regarding life. It should be polished because its more convincing. And the hero gets up because we all want a happy ending without the sadness and depression, some of that stuff happen in real life, there for it is human experience.
I watched this yesterday and I LOVE the way they played with opposites, Shang and his father have their hair parted in the opposite direction, the dragon scales are red and the electricity is blue, Shang's rings are red and his dad's is blue, and the way they play with showing his dad in the mirrors a lot. I also really liked how both the sides, red and blue, were not portrayed as the good and evil side because when the actual evil being comes alive, it is purple (a combination of red and blue). Edit: I also loved the fight scene with the mask guy, fast paced hand to hand combat, great choreography.
You can't cast Tony Leung as a forgettable villain, Jeremy. That guy is to China what Robert De Niro is to America. I mean, In the mood for Love,Lust Caution,2046, Happy together He is THAT awesome. Glad he is not wasted here !!
Bringing in the HK martial arts choreography into the MCU is one of the best choices. Now we just need to find a way to blend that all into the MCU with the CGI and stuff. Hope there's more to come, not only with Shang Chi but more of other MCU fights.
I just watched the movie, and man forget Shang Chi. The villain is the best part of the film. I love the focus they put on the villain. It felt more like his film than Shang Chi's.

"Less is more" is something the MCU needs to apply to its action climaxes. The craziest action sequence that worked best for me is Thanos vs the Iron-Man, Spider-Man, Dr Strange & the Guardians because it felt more personal and even though it went to crazy levels it was well executed. The final epic battle at the climax of Endgame was not very interesting altogether, the way it ended with "I am Iron-Man" landed but the battle as a whole wasn't very engaging. The MCU sometimes goes too far in the extreme with the action and loses my engagement, they have to refine that and nail it each time, and by now they really should already be at this level.
I liked the Endgame finale except for the part where all the female characters just happened to end up in the same place at the same time right when one of them gets the stones. When they did something similar in Infinity War it didn't bother me because it made sense that they were all together, but in Endgame it was very cringey and obvious pandering.
See I get that the big battle in endgame is objectively less well coordinated and paced than the thanos fight in IF, but my monkey brain says big comic book spread on screen is good so HAH
*It seems like with every new MCU instalment* they say “No this is the most powerful thing in the Universe” then in the next sequel it’s “No, this is the most powerful thing in the universe and was here all along” and they’ve done the same with the Ten Rings

Michelle Yeoh was the same as when she did her role in film Wing Chun decades ago. Simu Liu's sweater reminded me of the same colors of Goku's gi from DBZ.

I'm not saying this film is going to suck, I mean it's a marvel film so it will at the very least be entertaining, but representation doesn't automatically make it great and it shouldn't. We shouldn't give things a pass just because they check a metaphorical box that covers topics in the zeitgeist. I loved the third act of this movie. It was completely unexpected. It reminded me of the first time I saw Guardians of the Galaxy...just a wild ride. Just saw this movie earlier tonight and thought it was pretty fantastic. Not sure where exactly I rank it among MCU films, but I'm pretty sure it's at least in my Top 10. The movie had the best fight choreography, overall, in the MCU. Between the set design, costumes, and music, the film had a beautiful aesthetic. The story was compelling and contained a lot of heart. The characters were interesting and relatable, and it had one of the best villains of the MCU. Can't wait to see it again! (which will be tomorrow night, lol)
@Grant B. The whole movie was eye and ear candy. I admit, I had my doubts about another martials arts based movie after the whole MK and Snake-Eyes thing but Shang Chi is definitely going in my list.

@King Slayer The power of the ten rings shown in the trailers was very underwhelming. I don't know if those ten rings do anything amazing, but they don't look like they're all that great. Of course I could be wrong, it's just a personal first impression from the trailers.
Saw the movie and didn't experience the down time. I felt like it was perfect as it is. A lot of these huge climaxes I end up kind of checking out mentally. When everything flying around the screen is CGI and the fighting goes beyond unrealistic, it’s usually just a matter of time until it resolves itself and there’s therefore not really any stakes.

Seriously though, writing off the MCU movies as a "bunch of aliens and people with superpowers fighting each other" is doing a disservice to the character writing and potential for storytelling that these movies can have, especially considering that the 1st and 2nd phase MCU movies focused heavily on character moments and story consistency; they were more than just a bunch of aliens and people fighting one another. Compared to the earlier MCU movies, the latest MCU stuff don't hold a candle at all.
I haven't seen this movie but I must point out that you could also get that if the good guys are written so terribly the villains seem likeable by comparison.
Even though I agree with your statement about the generally weak villains, I feel that Killmonger, Hela and The Vulture were great "One-off" villains. I absolutely loved the mandarin character in this. He was such a great actor and the martial arts shown was so damn good. The way he wields those rings I was like holy hell that's what the MCU has been missing all this time. I was missing a bit of weight. I think I needed to see him kick some more ass in the present or be scarier than he was. Same reason I feel the fight against Thanos on Titan in Infinity War is one of the best fight scenes in the entire MCU. It was much more focused, which is impressive considering how many characters were involved, but that was part of its intensity since Thanos was such a threat. Like Antman is all about the family, the moral dilemma in civil war (to sign or not to sign), the power of the strong against the weak in Avengers 1, the responsibility of the strong to take care of the weak in Black Panther etc. It's not just the big CGI battle at the end.
In Endgame moving on and making ammends, FATWS carrying legacy and racism, Wandavision loss and grief, even What If? and Loki has those moments.
Here it's a man not knowing how to deal with grief and it gets to him. It shows sometimes you just gotta move on.
@@austinhernandez2716 The ending in ep 4 was depressing.
nah, it's always a generic story that's used to sell more. cgi battles appeal to a large portion of the audience and they cover this action with a worn-out theme. it's nothing new and is super polished to make sure it's not gonna create any controversies or moral dilemmas. bad guys are shallow business men, good guys sometimes fall but always get up thanks to their friends and family, it's not even hard to guess the plot from the opening scene. this is not real life, this is how you would want it'd be. and therefore it's not human either, it's too basic for that. it's just designed to make humans satisfied, cause if they told something more real you'd probably be disturbed.
I actually appreciated that they were actually being serious in this film and letting the drama play out
I watched this yesterday and I LOVE the way they played with opposites, Shang and his father have their hair parted in the opposite direction, the dragon scales are red and the electricity is blue, Shang's rings are red and his dad's is blue, and the way they play with showing his dad in the mirrors a lot. I also really liked how both the sides, red and blue, were not portrayed as the good and evil side because when the actual evil being comes alive, it is purple (a combination of red and blue).

I feel like the russos and whedon are the only one that are good at directing superhero action scenes.

I loved the third act of this movie. It was completely unexpected. It reminded me of the first time I saw Guardians of the Galaxy...just a wild ride.
I was worried that this movie would resemble the Daredevil Netflix series and that Shang-Chi would spend most of the movie getting his ass kicked and lying in bed while he healed from his numerous wounds. But, he was a bad ass who took care of his own...
They do that with so many heroes now. There was more fight scenes in this movie than the last two spider mans put together. Spider-Man is always getting beat up. When I watch a super hero movie I wanna see them go ham
@@johansermartinez9287 Shang chi is going to train Spider-Man I’m betting that’s what’s going to happen

Back in the 70's, "Shang Chi: Master of Kung Fu" was part of Marvel's wonky supernatural line-up: Blade, Morbius, Ghost rider, Hellstorm...Son of Satan, The Defenders, Doctor Strange, Power Man &Iron Fist, Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy... crazy stuff. Kinda curious why "Kung Fu" was taken out of the title. Possibly to appeal to the Chinese government? Good review, despite the glaring title omission.
It’s because having the first Asian superhero movie being defined by Kung fu wouldn’t sit right, Asian characters have been stereotyped as martial arts for a while now.

Tony Leung is the reason why we see the movie, he is an outstanding actor from Hong Kong.
I might argue that the ROMANTIC fight seen when Wenwu attacks his future wife....is THE best scene in the MCU so far.
(Many of my fave other scenes are NOT MCU, like Quicksilver running around the kitchen of the pentagon moving all the bullets, to the perfect song... [vs the sequel where "Sweet Dreams" is the WRONG piece of music for his big scene], which may be THE best scene in CBM history, or the blue dude sneaking into the White House to kill the president, cuz he's been mind-controlled... by a dude the president hired!)
If we're talking strictly films then definitely but if we're talking TV too then Daredevil 100% takes the choreography cake
I don’t see the dad as a villain though. Just manipulated
It's for sure the best MCU debut/origins film.
When JJ said "ring on ring combat" I immediately thought of Spaceballs

The Man from Nowhere is one of the greatest martial arts/action movies I’ve seen. Best knife fight ever, too.
The funny thing is i got bruce Lee vibes from watching the movie not in bad way the movie was good.
Saw the movie and didn't experience the down time. I felt like it was perfect as it is. Ah the wandavision effect. Original, interesting and breaks the formula in the first half. Marvelised by the end

I've seen a lot of reviews compared the end to "typical MCU fare" however its more comparable to Chinese Fantasy movies. Great review though!

I think it stupid to low rate a movie for the big CGI fight cuz they always do it. What do you expect in a big marvel movie? Fan will be mad if there no fight after all the hype in the movie. A lot of these huge climaxes I end up kind of checking out mentally. When everything flying around the screen is CGI and the fighting goes beyond unrealistic, it’s usually just a matter of time until it resolves itself and there’s therefore not really any stakes.
Spoiler
No stakes? I could've sworn multiple Avengers died in the last two movies. Its a comic book movie bruh a lot of the fun is how insane and unrealistic it is. Its a bunch of aliens and people with superpowers fighting each other.
Do you have any good climaxes you would recommend?

Seriously though, writing off the MCU movies as a "bunch of aliens and people with superpowers fighting each other" is doing a disservice to the character writing and potential for storytelling that these movies can have, especially considering that the 1st and 2nd phase MCU movies focused heavily on character moments and story consistency; they were more than just a bunch of aliens and people fighting one another. Compared to the earlier MCU movies, the latest MCU stuff don't hold a candle at all.

I absolutely loved the mandarin character in this. He was such a great actor and the martial arts shown was so damn good. The way he wields those rings I was like holy hell that's what the MCU has been missing all this time. All of the previous fights just feel mundane now that I've seen real martial arts that isn't BJJ or straight up brawls.
I was missing a bit of weight. I think I needed to see him kick some more ass in the present or be scarier than he was. It felt like he went out like a chum since it took his son 15 minutes to learn how to use those martial arts and the rings better than he did, when he had them for millenia and should have been able to deal some damage to the big bad.
@@tomasxfranco agreed

I’m conflicted. On the one hand, I totally understand/desire keeping the ending small scale. On the other hand, if they did, would average movie goers complain/think that Shang-Chi doesn’t have what it takes to hang out with the other Avengers when the big danger comes in?
I think I’d much rather have that small scale ending though.
Do it Ant-Man style and have him beat an Avenger.
@@midgetwars1 that’s a lot to ask for I would think. Having to bring a actor for a cameo specific fight scene for every movie, I would love that but it doesn’t sound very doable.
Its sadly business, marvel is gonna cater to average brainless movie goers because they are the majority
If you have watched ip man (if not look ip man vs 10 man dojo) if they had done something like that you and add a bit of mystical stuff with the rings and hint at imagine what he could do superpowers with the rings that could easily prove his place as an avenger level hero
No because we've had smaller scale mcu films like Ant Man. They didn't that large scale cgi effect battle at end.
I don't understand why the MCU won't bring on the writers from Agents of Shield. Six out of the 7 seasons had amazing villans, their Madam Hydra and Grant Ward are easily a top 5 MCU villans(depending on which side of the canon debate you stand on).

You talking about how the massive fight in the end wasn't as interesting as the simple fights in the beginning reminds me of Endgame and how I feel Cap, Iron Man and Thor v Thanos was better than the final battle. The final battle was amazing, but it didn't feel as tense or personal as that first smaller fight was
Same reason I feel the fight against Thanos on Titan in Infinity War is one of the best fight scenes in the entire MCU. It was much more focused, which is impressive considering how many characters were involved, but that was part of its intensity since Thanos was such a threat. The big war battle in Endgame was cool for spectacle, but it was just a collection of clips that didn't really flow well. The smaller fight against Thanos right before that was much more engaging.
