Here a little fun behind the scenes story: Actress Meng'er Zhang(Shang Chi’s sister) met action designer Yung Lee while making the movie. The two started dating and by the time the movie wrapped, they were married. Simu Liu and awkwafina helped celebrate the occasion by taking them to Disneyland and karaoke respectively.
Agree, such a well crafted villain. Honestly the story arcs for all the characters in this movie are great and shows a level of writing that's not typically thought out in marvel movies.
@@IanM92 Too Good? It's status quo for the MCU they've already had Robert Redford, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, hell Ben Kingsley is in this movie and they are all on the level of Tony. That's off the top of my head lm probably leaving more out
YES. I freaked out when I found out he was gonna be in this movie. I used to be a huge fan of the marvel franchise when I was in high-school, but as the years passed I calmed down and eventually lost interest- until I saw FREAKIN TONY LEUNG’S NAME in one random Shangchi review. His performance saved this movie (in my opinion) 🥲
fun fact: for Meng'er Zhang, the actress who played Shang's sister, this was her first ever mainstream movie. She was a theatre actress and she went through martial arts training for this movie. She met and fell in love with Yung Lee, an action designer who worked in the movie. Simu and the rest of the cast actually organised a surprise wedding reception for them in disneyland. Also, god damn, Tony fucking Leung. The guy can speak with his eyes. The actress who played Shang's mother, Fala Chen , was kinda crushing hard on him and her husband even made fun of her on twitter saying that "gosh i wished someone looked at me the same way my wife looked at Tony Leung"
Yeah her facial expressions were off a little you could tell she focused on action more than acting lol 🤣 plus she married the fight designer lol so you know she was distracted
@@DBrokeMillenial Not just martial arts training... this is said to be her first-ever screen acting role, period, so she learned on-set from the director and from Kingsley how to act for the camera vs. for a live audience.
I love how at the end, when Shang-Chi finally reconciles both parts of who he is (the gentleness and nurturing of his mother, the harshness and destructiveness of his father), and uses the Ten Rings to defeat the Dweller in Darkness, both his mother’s and father’s musical themes literally come in together to make his final theme. Also, the mirroring of Wenwu vs Leiko in the beginning and him vs Shang-Chi, in order to have Wenwu realize it is his son who carries on his wife’s spirit, not what he was looking for, is just brilliant. Dammit, I love this movie.
Personally thought the third act was very weak in comparison to the beginning and mid points but Wenwu definitely sells this movie for me. Kinda weird that I ended up being more invested in Wenwu's character than I do of the character the movie is named after though
@@khalduras784 Not sure if it’s because the script gave ‘Sean’ all the personality of a cardboard or because Tony Leung is an incredible actor, but I also was far more invested in the antagonist’s goals.
"We can make a good Dragonball movie!!!" Absofuckinglutely. We have the technology. We have the means. After walking out of Shang-Chi, I thought "this proves you can make a really good and faithful live action DBZ or Avatar movie". You just need a director and a studio willing to do it faithfully.
After this, I totally agree! It gave me faith that the characters and especially the over the top fantasy action can be pulled off if there's just enough care, research, & passion behind the scenes. Also, side note, my GF introduced me to your channel a few weeks back and I've been loving your reactions & reviews! Keep up the great work! 🙌🏾
Tony Leung is just on a whole another level as an actor. He's so effortlessly good in some scenes in this movie that he makes his co-stars look like amateurs at times lol
Dude's been doing this since the early 80s.. Most his costars weren't even born yet... He's really a gem, and I still can't believe this is only his first Hollywood movie.. I feel like I've known him forever.
@@khalduras784 Yep, Brad Allan sadly passed away recently. Andy Cheng, who was also a fight coordinator on this movie, was also a member of the JC stunt team.
@@khalduras784 his final work would be King’s Man, a prequel of kingsman, and he also did the previous two that’s why the fights in those films r so awesomely brutal
Thank you for confirming this for me! I kept seeing all the longs takes in the fight scenes and my first thought was "someone studied Jackie's movies."
@@deshaunfortune912 that would be a cool episode but I have no idea how Tony could defeat him lmao he's definitely one of Marvel's most OP villains who could have given Thanos himself a run for his money (especially since we don't know if the Ten Rings can be affected by Infinity Stones).
I actually really like the sequence when Shang Chi said 'Mom was gone, and we needed you, but you chose those rings over us" and he falters for a second, looks like that line really impacted him and those soul eater sense his doubts and started to impersonate the wife again. All he wants was to be together with his wife and their children again, soothing himself when they ran away saying "They'll come back and we'll be family again". Tony Leung the GOAT
Part one of their showdown really set up their final battle to have an exquisite RETURN OF THE JEDI feel to it. Father and son, coiled with emotion. And, as every good action director knows, the physical fight was orchestrated to the beat of that emotional struggle. Honestly, it was a cut above many MCU films in terms of (non-dragon) combat. Like Jackie Chan says, a fight should tell a story, not distract from it.
It sucks that the dad, Wenwu, died. I would have LOVED to see him more. His performance was amazing! The fight scenes were the best in the MCU. I cant wait to see Shang Chi tie into the rest of the MCU.
True. But Wenwu was alive for Millennia, so he can still show up in prequels in flashbacks. That's the thing about stuff like Marvel, Brock Rumlow died in civil war and he keeps showing up. You can always exist in the past.
@@MasterRyuuji fuck that the MCU is over after end game shit got woke and went broke both lost money black widow shang chi n now the eternals too why tf is am eternal.deaf!!??? That was so dumb!!
Crazy that no one has yet brought up the unimpressed archery old man. That's Yuen Wah, a legendary actor/stuntman who learned his craft in the academy alongside Jackie Chan
When Wenwu called the village elder "young man" it was actually a mistranslation of the saying "I have eaten more salt than you've eaten rice," meaning essentially the same thing, but a million times cooler
If it's essentially the same thing, then it isn't a mistranslation. Also, I guess in older times the saying worked because salt was rare? Is that the point?
@@CDexie less mistranslation and more localization, also, it's because rice was (and i think is) a very common food over there, so you eat it a lot. and even if you have salt in ever meal you probably aren't eating a ton of salt. to switch foods for the same meaning, its like saying you have eaten more pepper than someone has bread.
14:05 Not only did you recognize an Extremis soldier. But the fighter going against him is also another cool easter egg. The fighter that Ronny Chien's character praises "Nice one Helen!" is actually a Black Widow that Nat and Yelena freed from the Red Room. Look carefully and you can see that her dark outfit and her belt has the Black Widow emblem from the Red Room. Yup, that is a Widow, you can actually see her in the locker room scene afterwards before Shang Chi is told to remove his shirt; right when Wong leads Abomination through the sling ring portal and the two of them aren't fighting but relaxing between fights at 15:05 (but that wasn't in this reaction. It's at this scene you can see the two of them again not fighting after Wong and Abomination leave through the portal) . Even better icing on the cake, but if you go back and watch the scene where Nat takes on the rest of the Widows as the Red Room is being taken down, you can see "Helen" in the crowd of widows getting ready to swarm Nat. Same actress and same character credited in that movie and in Shang Chi. ;)
@@DBrokeMillenial sure, or like a person in the MCU? People feel so entitled to characters, let them die, grow and change with stories. Her death could hardly have had more meaning. I’m just mad we didn’t get her movie til after it.
Just a note, most of the magical beast like 'Morris' are from a Chinese mythical geography and bestiary from 4th century BCE. Morris' creature type is the more obscure from the book. Also the moving maze is a very very common asian trope, tree, rock, plants.
I absolutely love how the ten rings can't make you fly, but you can use them as static objects to run on, jump off, swing from, or various other parkour type moves. I'm excited to see how they explore this type of movement moving forward as Shang-Chi can essentially do the types of movement we saw in the scaffolding fight anywhere and any time, allowing him to have crazy unpredictable attack angles and awesome momentum based movement.
Yeah, the rings definitely aren't a mindless point-and-fly kind of doodad, and require a lot of thought to use. Like, sure you can point them down to launch off the ground, but you also have to remember to fire again for the landing!
About the shrine honoring passed-on loved ones, it's a largely Buddhist tradition though I do know some non-Buddhist Asians who do it too. It's a similar idea to the ofrenda in Coco and Mexican culture. Each household will have a dedicated shrine to dead loved ones and you typically would have a bowl of uncooked rice to put incense in when you pray to them. You make offerings of their favorite foods on the anniversaries of their death and lunar new year. Shrines of a certain person also don't have to be limited to one single place either. All of my aunts and uncles have a shrine dedicated to my great grandma and my aunt. And there will also typically be a shrine wherever their ashes lie. One thing I love about Buddhist temples is that you can put your loved ones' picture on the wall there and the monks will tend to it. That way, even after your entire family is gone, there will still be someone left praying for them. It's humbling to go to a temple shrine room and see hundreds of pictures of people long passed away. My aunt actually passed away right before this movie came out and I watched it with my cousins and my uncle. The funeral was still fresh in my mind and going in we had no clue what the plot was. Even though it was very emotional for my family and I to watch, it was still comforting to see Shang and his sister mourning their mother in the same way.
I haven’t watched the whole discussion yet, so it might be brought up… but it’s not surprising you guys were reminded of Jackie Chan. One of the stunt coordinators, Brad Allan, actually worked with Jackie Chan as a part of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team. Unfortunately he passed away a few weeks before the movie released, at the age of 48. You can spot the film’s dedication to him just before the final end credit scene.
Hope the guys see this. It's such a sad thing that Brad Allan wasn't able to experience how well received the fight coordination of the movie was. I hope Shang-Chi shows people in the movie business that films like Jackie Chan did them can still be popular and do more movies like them. Find actors like Simu Liu to do those kind of movies with respect to Jackie and his style. Unfortunately Jackie himself became a little too old and his movies nowadays are too campy for my taste, but I'm sure there are a lot of fans of him in the movie industrie now or people who worked with him like Brad Allan who could recreate that kind of films and the mix of comedy and great fighting.
Oh man, I saw the dedication, but I didn't put it together that it was the same Brad Allan from the JC Stunt Team! I loved his performance (action and otherwise) in Jackie Chan's "Gorgeous," iconic fight scene. Shang-Chi is an incredible swan song; may he rest in peace.
my favorite part was when Shang went to Katy's house. Especially when he took off his shoes before entering the house and the question of "when are you getting married?". I'm Asian and 19 but my grandpa has asked me that question 3 times now.
Man, Rick really liked the movie. I honestly thought the humor would be more of a problem for him. Glad they all loved it. The entire movie is great but the choreography elevates it
Awkwafina was honestly such a breath of fresh air in this film. Yes she has kinda one go to comedic performance but its how its utilized that makes the difference and we dont usually get the kinda comedy she offers in a MCU film so it felt very entertaining. I also like how she and Shang are buds. Maybe it can be something else if written well but I can totally be content if they stay platonic.
Works well cause was in small bits; other movies try to bank on her name but too much of her jokes can get distracting fast so they balanced really well her moments.
Yeah she was fantastic is The Farewell where her comedy was present but watered down by the subject matter and tone of the film, then I'd argue she was definitely a lil annoying in Oceans 8
It also helps that she ended up being a contributing character as well instead of just a supporting one. . She has excellent coordination and reflexes, she just uses them for driving for fun. But if she actually puts herself to learning, she can pick up skills that make use of those talents. Like archery. It was a tad rushed, but not unbelievable. It mostly made sense that she was good with a bow, and she came through in the clutch.
Fun fact. Saw a Tiktok not long after this hit theaters where someone gave the answer to one of the biggest concerns out of this. That particular laptop would have had the hardrive to the side, not in the center. So although destroyed, the memory was completely retrievable by a pro.
Depends on if the knife blade cutting through the laptop would have caused a power surge/short through the logic board, also depends on if the SSD was a physically separate component or soldered to the motherboard…
So much love about this movie. The cinematography, the fight scenes(best in the MCU bar none), the OST(Shang Chi’s theme is a banger of a track), the acting(especially of Tony Leung’s Wenwu), and what it sets up(really interested in what Xu Xialing does with the Ten Rings organization), and possibly connections to other MCU stuff(were the rings themselves created by the Eternal Phastos?) This honestly may be my favorite thing to come of Phase 4 yet.
It's up there as far as best Marvel origin movies, everything for the most part from the acting, the writing, the direction, the cinematography, the fight choreography just all of it was done beautifully, loved it. It borrowed from so many aspects of Asian culture and film, I'm not Asian but I love the culture and films from old school Jackie Chan movies to the IP Man and Raid movies. I think one thing that keeps it from being one of the best superhero origin movies ever is that last 10 or 15 minutes with the Dweller-in-Darkness fight. Don't get me wrong it looked great, it showed how prowerful Shang Chi and the ten rings actually can be, and I get a lot of Asian culture is the fantastical elements like dragons and stuff like that but I think for the grand story they were telling with him versus his father it was not needed. I think it had this intimate story and just took it over the top, did too much and felt rushed. I think it would've been much better if all that got it's own movie with them taking on the Dweller-in-Darkness and his minions in the sequel.
Yea the only negative I can think of is maybe some questionable dialogue choices for certain characters here and there but overall it’s a solid 8.5/10 at least.
8:18 Not only did you recognize the line "I don't want any trouble" as a Jackie Chan line, but the Jackie Chan Stunt Team did in fact assist with the choreography and stunts for this movie which definitely makes the fight scenes feel like one of his movies but also keeping to the MCU's storyline.
That scene with them fighting on the side of a building and Katy is hanging from that one bamboo is cut straight out of Rush Hour 2. I was hearing Jackie Chan shouting "Carter!" in my head lol.
This movie was way more connected to the greater MCU than I thought. Outside the obvious crossovers, the bus passenger streaming the bus fight was previously seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming as the vendor who asks Spidey to do a flip. Also, in the fight club, the person the Extremis enhanced was fighting was a Black Widow from that movie. I thought the Captain Marvel cameo was a nice nod to the behind-the-scenes humble beginnings of the director having previously directed her in some indie films. Really looking forward to seeing how this corner of the MCU develops and interacts with other corners going forward.
I prefer nods like this instead of some of IN YOUR FACE eastereggs we used to get in past phases of the MCU. This makes the world feels more alive and connected, specially cause we still seeing “blip” content around like therapy and dating apps for people that were snapped.
@@marvelndc By himself, I actually give it to Bucky because Bucky has been killing for decades. With the ten rings, Shang would wipe the floor with Bucky. As we've seen, guns are ineffective against the rings, and the ring's magic overpowers Bucky's strength anyday of the week.
This is definitely one of the best MCU movies. The fight choreography alone was worth the price of admission, but then you add the astounding CGI, wonderful soundtrack (not quite Spider-Verse level, but damn close), and amazing writing and acting... Also, I love all the little details, too; like how the Great Protector is an eastern style dragon, while the evil Soul Eater is basically a western style dragon. (DRAGON FIGHT! DRAGON FIGHT! 😀) Or the fact that all the supernatural creatures are based on real-life Chinese lore, with Morris being a Hundun aka a Dijiang, a divine spirit creature of chaos and vice which is often easily confused (which fits PERFECTLY as a companion to Trevor!).
4:20 The people who did this movie need to assist or help with future live action Avatar: last airbender movies or films. Notice that Wenwu's form is Hung Gar Kung Fu. Which is the style inspired for Earthbending. And yes, Yiling's "airbending" technique is a mix of Tai Chi and Ba Gua Zhang. Tai Chi was the inspiration for Water Bending and Ba Gua Zhang is for Air Bending. And my favorite part is that after she's done messing with him, she actually shows him an extra form of mercy. At 5:45 after she discombobulates him and sends him flying, she actually sees he's about to fall and hit the ground. But she redirects the wind and sends him into the pond as a "Go soak your head" conclusion to their first meeting. Despite him trying to wage a challenge, she still showed a bit of compassion when defeating him.
Just an absolute perfect Hollywood debut for Tony Leung. Magnificent performance I just super dig this film. They crafted a tragic love story, fused Ruch Hour and Crouching Tiger onto it, and sat Michelle Yeoh on top
Worse to me is how they WASTED Extremis. They rush, EVERY superhero's available stories, with a lot of it ending up on the cutting room floor. After Extremis, Tony didn't just blur the line between him and the suit, he removed it. He no longer was a man in a suit, he *WAS* the suit.
Honestly, this is a problem I've started to notice in Marvel, so I just reason it as some of these groups as counting having a guy as the janitor counts as "in" on some of these places lol
So the ten rings only had like 30 to 50 men to invade a small village who is there to protect this dimension from a world scale level threat? Those villagers who had extra "wind/chi" powers but never actually used it against the ten rings or the creatures. I really wanted to like this movie but cannot get past the holes in the writing. It was just average.
The actor who plays Shang Chi's father is Tony Leung. LEGENDARY Hong Kong actor. He is a beast of an actor. I also have to admit he might be one of the sexiest actors I've ever watched on screen. Just watch In The mood For Love and you'll get it. He has been the lead in a couple of Wong Kar-wai's movies who is just a brilliant fucking director.
I like the theory that Wanda is being manipulated by an interdimensional creature like the Dweller used Wenwu. Both of them heard loved ones cry out to them for help. Maybe hers is Shuma Gorath who is more or less said to be the villain in Doctor Strange 2
I understand this statement but her choice was deliberate and intentional. She may not have known the extent of the consequences but she there would be some.
It was a solid origin story for Shang chi but we can all agree, just like other incredible mcu movies the winter soldier, infinity war and black panther, this movie was about the villain. Tony Leung's Wenwu was the heart of this movie and it makes the movie more captivating :)
Tony Leung is one of the best actors of our time. He is capable of conveying more with just his eyes than lots of other actors with dialogue and expressive emotions. I know thats not the format for this chanel, but I really wish the guys reacted to some of Wong Kar-wai movies with Tony. Or maybe something like Hero, Red Cliff or Infernal Affairs, which are more "entertaining" movies, but still showcase Leung's enormous acting talents.
They should definitely check out Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, or Infernal Affairs… but then again, it’s really not their (admittedly more basic) tastes or at least not their usual brand. I think some of them would enjoy it though.
15:37 Best part about Meng Er Zhang, who plays Xialing, is that she had no prior martial arts experience at all before this film. She had no idea that she was auditioning for Shang Chi but definitely committed to the training for this movie. Her performance definitely made a lot of experts think she had actually been fighting for years. Side fun fact: She came in to the the filming of this movie single. When the movie wrapped production, she got married.
I'm pretty sure in One-Shot they didn't kill Trevor, but were there to break him out and in the end of it said something along the lines "He wants to meet you".
This really is a great movie. Setups to future films/spin offs, great cinematography and fight choreography. And the Trevor “cameo” (barely even a cameo, he’s a full side character) is so great. I was with Eric, just a “I can’t believe Trevor is not only in this movie, but he’s STILL in this movie,” in every scene he was in. The villain wasn’t super generic like early MCU villains, it’s just an all around great marvel movie.
I love the way Shang Chi moves. I can’t wait to see how he blends in with the other heroes. I’m also interested in how they specifically shoot his fight scenes in team up movies.
Whenever they react to Eternals, it would be a very interesting discussion and as someone who is a massive Eternals fans I am looking forward to that reaction however long it may take!!
@@Blackhawk211 with how long I've been watching their videos I could see Eric (he tries understanding films), Rick (he likes character-centric stories) and Aaron (a massive marvel fan) liking the film I am not so sure about Calvin though Although they all collectively enjoyed watching BW, but Eternals is undoubtedly better than BW so I hope they enjoy it too Time will tell..
At the final fight when Death Dealer was killed I was so disappointed. He didn't even have enough screen time. Then that soul sucking thing turned to Razerfist and I was like: "No. No. No. Don't dare to kill him off. DON'T DARE! NO!" I'm glad he survived. And I almost had a heart attack when I saw Trevor laying on the ground. Hey, what happened to him though? Did he stay in the village?
There was a deleted scene that took place before Katy shoots the Dweller in Darkness where Razorfist gives her inspiration by telling her she's the best shooter he's ever seen and he runs off and kills a bunch of the soul suckers before getting sucked as well.
BONUS : A deleted scene reveals that "Razor Fist" was at the dinner table too because he's none other than Shang-Chi and Xialing's adoptive brother Mattias!
The fights were so fluid and flowed from the attacker to the defender. I have never seen such continuous fights in any movie or series. Those alone are a good recommendation to watch the movie, but there was so much more. The story, the actors, the humor, all were so good. Yes, this is among the best of Marvel movies and it deserves everyone watching it. 🐱💻🐱👤
Glad y'all loved this movie as much as i did! I'm more of a casual fan of marvel movies but I've seen basically every one and, just like y'all, as soon as the movie finished i just sat there and realized "wow, that's my favorite marvel movie." I've never had that happen before - this movie is just SO good and i wish i had more people to talk about it with
One of the Top 5 MCU films for me. Gorgeous cinematography, great music, and the absolute best choreography in an MCU film yet. One of the best things about this film (and this is for every standout MCU film in my opinion) is Tony Leung as Wenwu. One of the things "standout" films have within in the MCU is a fantastically written villain. Yes, Wenwu is the "bad guy" but you understand why he does what he does. He's conflicted and he does genuinely love his family, but it is that love and ultimately need for vengeance that drives him to do the bad things he does. Then to cap things off, he has an excellent redeeming arc. Something that not a lot of films can pull off well, but this one does it in spades.
What was even cooler was that it started out as a fight, and became a courtship halfway through. Watching their movements and their facial expressions change, the respect growing between them, was beautiful. In the theatre, I leaned over to my friend sitting next to me and just whispered 'This isn't a fight - this is a mating dance'.
Wenwu is definitely the actual main character of this👀 He goes through the most character development and every single part of back story we get revolves around him. I love that they still called this movie Shang-Chi though, because in the end he gets the weapon that started all of this. But In the credits it doesn't say "Shang-Chi will return" but instead "the ten rings will return" which really shows that it's not about him. We don't even know if they mean the rings or the organization.
I think it implies the organization since the new Logo is shown with it. Shang-Chi returning was already implied to be returning in the mid-credits scene with Wong so both get their dedicated scene at the end
Definitely sets up some more good family drama, with the sister potentially being as ambiguous and complex as her father. Like, will she reform the Ten Rings organization, now that she's reconnected with her family, or will her ambitions to have her own empire make them just as bad as before?
Btw the Opening is 100% a nod to dynasty warriors because Tony Leung was in ''Red Cliff'' where he plays the character ''Zhou Yu'' from ''the romance of the three kingdoms''. I almost couldn't belive it when I saw it lol
one of my favourite things about the final fight was the difference between how Shang-Chi and his dad wield the rings. his dad uses them like weapons, whereas Shang-Chi used them more like support items
Know that I think of it, most of the movies from this phase were dealing about family drama, from Wanda to this to the Eternals has always been about family. Even Loki (to some extend) has found “family” in Silvie. Hope Marvel keeps experimenting and produced more things like Shang-Chi and Eternals! They’ve established the franchise enough and now it’s time to diversify the line up (and story)!
Oh damn. That's a great reference. "He's Iroh at Ba Sing Se" That makes it hit pretty hard. Except without the redemption arc of finding the white lotus Wen Wu just deteriorates.
I just watched _Shang-Chi_ yesterday on Disney+ during my Dad's birthday and on Disney+ Day. By far easily one of my favorite MCU films so far from its diverse cast (Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Leung, etc.), fight choreography, visuals and engaging storyline, that makes me look forward to what to expect in Phase 4 of the MCU. Awkwafina as Katy was by far my favorite character in the film, next to Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery (+ Morris) and If I had a celebrity friend that I would like to hang out with especially during Karaoke night, it's without a doubt Awkwafina. Lastly since Aaron mentioned _Raya and the Last Dragon,_ due to Awkwafina appearing in that film you should react to the film whenever you guys have the chance (regardless if the ONLY Disney content you react to are related to Marvel and Star Wars).
I really liked Trevor in Iron Man 3, which is a film I immensely enjoy. So I was really happy to see him pop up in this film. His inspiration for acting is probably my favorite joke in the Marvel movies. It's funny, sad, and genuinely inspirational.
12:45 flight attendant was in full auto customer service mode. Basically tell customer stuff, wait for customer order, no order in 5-10 secs then move onto the next part of customer service list you follow. Or aka “I hate my job, gonna shut my soul off and go full robot mode till shift ends.”
happy to hear the enthusiasm from eric about the action cinematography, definitely the best aspect of this film, to a point that I thought the big CG dragon fight at the end was underwhelming compared to it. also, didn't appreciate enough on my first viewing the difference of how shang-chi and his father used the rings in their fighting styles. I really like that touch.
I watched this in cinema, and then again yesterday when it came out on Disney+. It's such a beautiful film and went straight up to the top for me of MCU movies! Really enjoyed this reaction too.
The history of the ten rings is going to be interesting, that they were only noticed in Kamar-Taj when Shang-Chi used them and presumably activate the beacon. So for a thousand years their basic on position was enough to grant immortality to a human, without magic like The Ancient One.
A thing I randomly remembered, while watching this movie in the cinema, was that Trevor was in a tv pilot where his costar was an alcoholic monkey and when I was watching this I realized a) Trevor has a fascination with monkeys (and where it came from) and b) That's probably a big reason he took that job XD
The aunt is Michelle Yeoh, from crouching Tiger, hidden dragon, sword of destiny, the Mummy:tomb of the dragon emperor, gunpowder milkshake, Star Trek, and a long career in Asian cinema as well. An icon

Agree, such a well crafted villain. Honestly the story arcs for all the characters in this movie are great and shows a level of writing that's not typically thought out in marvel movies.
Only because it’s played by Tony Leung. An actor too good for the MCU

The actress who played Shang's mother, Fala Chen
, was kinda crushing hard on him and her husband even made fun of her on twitter saying that "gosh i wished someone looked at me the same way my wife looked at Tony Leung"
Yeah her facial expressions were off a little you could tell she focused on action more than acting lol 🤣 plus she married the fight designer lol so you know she was distracted

The relationship reminded me alittle bit of gendo and shinji from Evangelion...
Personally thought the third act was very weak in comparison to the beginning and mid points but Wenwu definitely sells this movie for me. Kinda weird that I ended up being more invested in Wenwu's character than I do of the character the movie is named after though

When Wenwu called the village elder "young man" it was actually a mistranslation of the saying "I have eaten more salt than you've eaten rice," meaning essentially the same thing, but a million times cooler
As a person who has eaten rice almost every single day of his life i say that that is awesome

Same actress and same character credited in that movie and in Shang Chi. ;)

That's why you never stick your chopsticks in a bowl of rice when not eating. It looks like the incense.
Shrines dedicated to ancestors are also a huge part of taoism
I like to think of the home shrines as 'spiritual wi-fi repeaters'

His intention with his work and how he worked with a purpose? He knows.
my favorite part was when Shang went to Katy's house. Especially when he took off his shoes before entering the house and the question of "when are you getting married?". I'm Asian and 19 but my grandpa has asked me that question 3 times now.

Rick is quite unpredictable!!
It’s cool too because her humour doesn’t undercut the tone of the scenes. When it’s serious, she’s not spit firing jokes.

When I saw his sould got taken, in my mind "aah... MCU's Boba Fett"
Cool design, not enough screen time.
Watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The wuxia fights in that film will blow your mind. Michelle Yeoh was one of the leads.
@@jckung3914 I have watched it a long time ago a few times. It is one of my favorites too. 😀
I’m genuinely proud of Eric for holding in that accented “I don’t want trouble” for a good 15 seconds
I love when he was kicking the wood as a kid Erik said “rock lee” 😂
I want a full short of Shang-Chi, Katie, and Wong singing Hotel California.
“It’s like a fight and dance.”
Yes.. when fighting is this good that’s exactly how you should feel
Facts!
@@janmikaldouglas2767 beautiful.. wow.. just beautiful
@@BenjiClips614 yeah I thought so too
It was "love at first fight". ;D And honestly, it was kind of hot, lol.
Wenwu is definitely the actual main character of this👀
He goes through the most character development and every single part of back story we get revolves around him. I love that they still called this movie Shang-Chi though, because in the end he gets the weapon that started all of this.
But In the credits it doesn't say "Shang-Chi will return" but instead "the ten rings will return" which really shows that it's not about him. We don't even know if they mean the rings or the organization.
Shang Chi sequel has been green lit. It will go into production in 2023.
One of my favorite movies. I do Tai Chi and couldn’t be happier with the representation
I was vaccinated when this hit theatres here so I figured fuck it, I'll take the plunge. Really glad I did. This movie kicks ass.
The bass of the song playing in the bus fight scene was insane in the cinema
Wow, Calvin calling out all of the things he wanted to see in the movie and then them happening was so cool!
I literally just finished shangi chi to watch you guys react to it
This movie was so surprising, It's in my Top 5 comic book movies, PERIOD!
one of my favourite things about the final fight was the difference between how Shang-Chi and his dad wield the rings. his dad uses them like weapons, whereas Shang-Chi used them more like support items
His dad uses them as an extension of his arm while Shang chi uses them as an extension of his king fu
I'm so down with Wong being the new marvel ambassador
I would really recommend the Marvels: Assembled BTS for Shang-Chi because it gave me such an appreciation for the effort that went into the film.
happy to hear the enthusiasm from eric about the action cinematography, definitely the best aspect of this film, to a point that I thought the big CG dragon fight at the end was underwhelming compared to it.
also, didn't appreciate enough on my first viewing the difference of how shang-chi and his father used the rings in their fighting styles. I really like that touch.
This by FAR is one my favorite MCU movies… top 3 at most.. SO GOOD
I watched this in cinema, and then again yesterday when it came out on Disney+. It's such a beautiful film and went straight up to the top for me of MCU movies! Really enjoyed this reaction too.
This is literally the movie that made me sign for the stream cause I was just like Calvin, I left the cinema wanting to see it again so bad
The way I geeked out when I saw the nine-tailed fox...it's the first time I've seen one in CGI. Gorgeously done
I’m surprised to hear Rick to say it might be his favorite MCU film
The music in this movie is so beautiful
"Where do I know this actress from?!?" That's legend Michelle freakin' Yeoh!
This movie was so beautiful, the score, action, characters
I did not have super high hopes for this movie. but damm it blew my mind. They did everything right and was so freaking cool.
I watched this reaction a couple of times. The joy on your faces gives me life!
The aunt is Michelle Yeoh, from crouching Tiger, hidden dragon, sword of destiny, the Mummy:tomb of the dragon emperor, gunpowder milkshake, Star Trek, and a long career in Asian cinema as well. An icon
Didn't know anything about this film and just walked into a cinema. Was pleasantly surprised. Good humor and action.
This is definitely up there as one of my favourite movies in the MCU, loved all the fight scenes, choice of music and the dialogue
Damn these guys have some serious patience some certain TH-camrs can learn 🤣🤣
Zemo dancing and Wong singing... Things I didn't know I wanted but Marvel delivered
Tony Leung, the father was so damn good acting-wise. And yes, by far the best on screen action since Winter Soldier for sure.
Simu Liu “SEE-moo LEE-ew” is a very popular actor in Canada from "Kim's Convenience". Tony Leung is a legend who they say is "The man who acts with his eyes"
This movie is SOOO good! Seeing it in theaters was a whole other experience as well.
LOL the reference to The Room reaction at 6:10, doing a waterfall at the Golden Gate
Still one of my favorite reactions. It's just so damn funny.
@@cctomcat321 same 😂😂 I must’ve watched it 100 times last year
@@stinkykyle96 it's one of those few honest to God "cures depression" videos. Not literally, of course, but if I'm feeling like I need a laugh, it's definitely a go-to since that reaction gets me cry-laughing because it's so damn good and funny.
okay i know shang chi is a really serious and cool movie but i couldnt help it but notice when the guy say "SHES RIDING IT" like seriously am i the only one who noticed that. i couldnt stop laughing
Tony Leung is a freaking Legend... A badass character actor... I am sure the other actors in this movie except Michelle Yeoh, learnt a lot from him ...
