Funny you felt the dc similarities….cause Jack Kirby created both the Eternals AND the New Gods from DC. As it stands, it appears that the New Gods are more popular amongst comic book readers (partly because there are more comics about them).

Plus I do think it strongly helps, at least speaking as a kid of the 90s/2000s, the Bruce Timm DC universe clearly explains and sets up who they are and why Darkseid is their enemy. It wasn’t Superman defeats Darkseid and the New Gods come out of nowhere.

I swear every comment I see says “I must be one of the few who loved it” haha.. I honestly feel like I’m in the few who agrees with the critics.
The concepts were interesting, but the pacing was a total mess. Every other scene they seemed to add some new random subplot, and none of the payoffs felt like they had any weight since there was hardly any build.
    Spoiler:
One example, what even was the point of the lead deviant? He gained a higher intelligence, had the ability to absorb the eternals powers, then just died. We already knew the celestials were ruthless, so he didn’t really add anything. There was already too much going on with so many characters, it would’ve been better to just not include it.

This needed to be a tv series. Amazing Characters, great concepts, a twist that I legitimately didn't see coming... But some of the WORST pacing I've seen in a movie. Really shitty execution all around tbh. Also remember how Kingo just leaves for the climax, essentially betraying everyone, then comes back in the epilogue like everything is good? Fuck that guy

Couldn't agree more. I saw Arishem and was like, WOAH, another possible big-bad to throw into the mix of possible big-bads. So far Phase 4 is very much a Phase 1 Redux, in that everything so far is really just trying redefine the MCU as we've come to know it, which in-and-of-itself is not a bad thing, but I just wish that Marvel Studios would maybe swing for the fences a little more. Who know, maybe once Phase 4 is done, and Phase 5 starts, they'll be able to go even further with some of these interesting ideas, instead of falling back on formula too much.

    • @rebekahrhodes9512
      @rebekahrhodes9512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It has to do with the mythological character Kingo is based on, kingu who is like a general / right hand man to tiamut, and in mythology kingu flees during the battle in which tiamut dies. All of their names are inspired by mythological figures and those figures stories greatly shape the plot and the character decisions of the movie.

just saw it today on disney plus, and i had heard some not so great things about it and even heard it was the MCUs first flop, but i actually enjoyed it for what it was. it did feel very much like a justice league movie, despite the very similar characters, it had a more mature tone, and even does the whole gods wanting to be human thing too. the characters feel very human, except for the superman guy. i think things would of worked better if eternals was a series instead of a movie, i would of liked these characters fleshed out more. the whole deviant antagonist was kinda wasted, it was interesting that it kept evolving, but then wonder woman just kills it in the very end and thats the end of that story. i would have loved to see that story fleshed out more. overall 7/10 for me.

I was more interested upon seeing the delivery of those great lines from the books by people in dark rooms about the human condition. My "hot take" on the comics Eternals is that the Ancient Astronauts/Aliens sci-fantasy stuff is a fun premise for a visually inventive comic book or movie, but trying to stuff it into the Marvel universe and superhero motifs in general (e.g the ancient demigod superhumans all run around in lycra/pleather jumpsuits, have secret civilian identities etc.) isn't necessarily the best idea. I'm curious to see how the movie executes that - if it feels like a sci-fantasy movie that happens to take place in the MCU (like Thor: Ragnarok) or a different kind of concept stuffed into a Marvel superhero mould.

They should have been recruited into the Avengers by now.
I also felt like the head Deviant didn't add a whole lot after he killed Gilgamesh. Like, the antagonist role switched from deviants to Icaris and made the deviant's presence a little superfluous. If he'd switched sides and started fighting with the others against Icaris, that would have been way more interesting.
And the conflict felt so unsatisfying. I mean, either way they're condemning at least a planet's worth of people, earth or potential earths. Finding a way that saved everyone would have been much more satisfying.
The powers were cool though. I especially loved Phestis, even though I didn't completely understand. Sersi reminded me so much of FMA, it made my little Ed-loving heart happy.

I’ve seen a few Marvel movies but I wouldn’t say I’m a Marvel person, if that makes sense. I never read the comics, even when I was a kid, so I know basically zip about the lore of the characters going in to these movies.
I thought “Eternals” was okay but just okay. One practical criticism I have of the film is that it’s shot so dark. Sometimes, I could hardly see what was going on. I turned up the brightness on my phone and it still wasn’t any better, so it wasn’t my device. I hate when movies make you squint at everything like that.
I respect the opinion of the poster above who said this would have been better as a series. I agree. I got the sense of some of the Eternals’ characters and others of them were just there and really didn’t have any character development at all. I know the same amount about as I did at the start of the film - namely, bupkis.
On a personal note, I don’t appreciate that the only family unit they showed had two men and I certainly don’t appreciate seeing two men kissing. There was just no need for that. Yes, we all know gay couples exist. But, unless you’re in certain parts of New York City or San Francisco, let’s not act like you can’t turn the corner with running into them. Statistically, they’re not that large a portion of the population, so they don’t need to be in every single modern movie. That’s not representation; that’s pushing an agenda. I know adults see these movies but a whole bunch of kids watch them, too. Let their parents teach them what they want to teach them about human interactions and don’t try to insert that kind of thing as normative in an action movie.
I do give the movie credit for the fact that there were no real villains in this and no easy answers. I suppose you could say the lead Deviant was the villain but, really, he was just as much a victim of circumstances as the rest of them.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say “there are good people on both sides” but I think both Sersi and Ikaris had valid perspectives. Either path would lead to the death of someone so someone else could live and survive. These are deep questions and they don’t have easy answers. I wish the director had had the characters sit with those questions a little longer in favor of more Deviant punching.

I love how people are walking away with two different experiences with this film. Some are saying it’s the worst, others like me, the best (of Phase 4 specifically).
But that’s not what gets me the most,

I just finished the movie…my thoughts in a nutshell is this.
The story beats are good, the characters on paper are good, the deep lore sounds interesting…. BUT this movie was rushed and that was honestly the biggest weakness.
In one movie Marvel tried to
    - Introduce several characters that are meant to effect all of history
    - Introduce celestials, beings much older than even the stones
    - tries to be emotional despite how little we knew about the characters
    I honestly think this would’ve been great if it was split in two, part one being an intro to the celestials, how they’ve effected history, and having the main conflict being fighting deviants;
and the second part being all the deaths, the emotion and the current story that was told (minus all the excess flashbacks, cause they’d be part of the first movie).
This way we could’ve built actual attachment to the characters; for the more emotional and philosophical story the externals was trying to tell.

I haven't seen the movie yet or anything so maybe they changed it up a bit but from what I know they are not older than the infinity stones. The stones are from before the big bang and initial creation of the universe which formed them into crystals, they are like primordial forces of the universe prior. The celestials came along way after them and are only responsible for being the first form of existence in the universe so to say they are older than the stones is to say they are older than the big bang. Technically Galactus is older than them also because he comes from the universe before this one(this universe was born from one before it)

We reached a point where we no longer have the superhero genre, it already became the "MCU genre". I mean mostly all epics are subjected to “the hero’s journey” plot. Theres no real way to change the formula. Name a superhero movie that doesn’t do this. You see it as an MCU genre only bc they’re dominating their genre, not bc they’re following some exclusive formula. People get tired of things that are overly saturated and that’s perfectly fine. If it were DC churning out this many films, you’d say it’s the “DC genre”. The irony there is that the comics tend to be more mature in the handling of their characters and stories compared to the MCU. Like the Shang-Chi comics don’t even have big fights with monsters like the movie did, they’re basically “James Bond meets Bruce Lee” kind of stories that focus more on grounded and realistic fights. So if anything, the issue is that they’re not enough like the comics that they’re based on.

well going off the trailers it looks like Robb stark from game of thrones discovering he used to be a god or super hero and now he has to relearn how to fight to protect the earth while teaming up with a bunch of other gods . but the impression ironically his character isn't mentioned at all in this review.

It used to be The Eternals. So you weren't wrong. The title dropping the 'The' was a headline during the time there was no other movie news.

Makkari is easily the best speedster I’ve ever seen in a movie or tv show, the slow mo scenes are overdone now so seeing someone run in real time and having big impact with their hits was so good to see, it’s a shame she’s probably the character we are the least likely to get more of.
The deviant plot was a bit shit though, guy didn’t even have a name and wanted the same thing as the eternals in the end but Angelina Jolie ended the plot in about 2 seconds

Which struck me as kinda weird because he could heal himself before he morphed into final form. So y didn’t he just heal himself after being diced by Athena??
