That was a tough one Cody. Glad that your GranDad touched your heart in the way that he did. It's ok to choke up when you think of him. It's a sign of serious respect. He had a great hand in making you who you are.

Seeing you pause and for a moment you were taken back in time to when you were a boy with your granddad was so powerful! I have felt that exact same feeling when I’ve held my grandfathers block planes or other woodworking tools. It truly is magical!

The last pause when you were talking about being transported back to the days you had with your grandfather made my eyes a bit misty, I wont lie. You won't have more days on earth with him, but the memories and ideals he instilled in you are carried on. These same values and ideas are passed on like a small carrot of wisdom in each of your videos. His memory and his legacy lives on through your actions and in the minds of all those who watch your content. Thank you for sharing your generational wisdom, it is greatly appreciated.

I've been a casual watcher of your videos for a good minute now and I've always found your dedication and fascination with U.S forestry equipment and it's history entertaining and a great way to learn some new things I'd never have learned otherwise.
But this video was something else. My dad died when I was 14, really before I could've appreciated and understood what a father meant to me, but I always remember his desire to teach me and show me the things he knew (specifically about electronics and how they worked). It's a big reason why I love technology/science and strive to learn anything and everything I can as I've grown older.
So just hearing you genuinely reminisce about the memories you had of your grandad teaching you what he knew, simply through a copper funnel with some felt in it, was incredibly touching.
I hope you keep up the amazing work.

For years my grandfather taught me little lessons just like the "copper funnel".
It helped fuel my connection with him then and even now, years after his passing. The smell of automobile paint and greased smudged rags still remind me of him.
RIP to all the men of our lives who built us drop by drop through our own "copper funnels"

My wife has a PhD. I work a professional job. My sons are incredibly intelligent. My grandfathers were tradesmen. They had many “PhDs” of practical knowledge. It isn’t enough to just be book smart. A man who is well rounded is both learned and handy.
I got emotional when you were honoring your grandad’s memory by teaching us something. That’s what I try to do for my sons.
    Thanks for sharing.

Sure brought a tear to my eye. I was a shadow to my great grandfather. He was a mill wright on an island in the pacific in the 50's. They build everything from scratch including custom machines.
When you paused looking at the funnel - i knew exactly how you felt. He taught me so much and I'm trying to recreate the tools and such I remember using.

My grandfather passed in 2019- he had many wonderful old “purpose-built” tools. Many of which were thievishly scavenged by my some family members before anyone could glance at them again. We used to play this game when I was younger where I’d pick something out in his mess of a garage and he’d tell me what it was for. Those are some of my favourite memories. The things aren’t the man, but they sure as hell reinforce his image.
I really enjoy your content. As a young man from Northern Ontario, it brings me hope to see men like you encouraging others to, well, be men. All the best to you and your kin.

Entitlement is so insane in those situations. I’ve had that happen with both of my grandmas which I was there for. It’s unfortunate but people do things when grieving. Morally speaking I wouldn’t do that and didn’t. I had to hold down the urge to hate them for the entitlement in them to want to grab stuff unjustly.

Great video, I got a fair amount of tools from my grandfather who was a union machinist and son of a blacksmith. He died when I was in high school before I really got into working on things. I go out of my way to use his files, hammers, and other hand tools whenever I’m working on something. Every time I stop in the middle of the project, get sentimental, and think how awesome it is to be using the same tool he used.

What a great way to keep his memory alive, by sharing with those who don't know... I've got a few things that my dad(step) & my grand dad had, including their lanterns (grampa passed in 64) & split bamboo fly rods & creels. Used them all, until I upgraded, still treasure them, just wish I would have had more time with them, but I did raise my son with their use & to honor what tools they were... Thanx !

I'm sitting at hospice right now with my father, he's 82, has lead a great life, and we've been doing alot of reminiscing. I'm not sure how to put this but I'm really glad you got something that gives you joy and good memories of your grand dad. I'm sad about losing dad, I'm really going to miss him, but I also take great comfort knowing that I'm going to have good memories and touchstones that I can share with my son and maybe some day my grandkids. Thing that we're his and my grand dad's and great grand dad's, telling them the stories and passing them on. Any way thanks for the video it made me feel better.

Awesome you found something to remind you of your grandfather, Cody. I was close with my grandpa too.
My grandpa was a career electrician. I remember him teaching me about AC current and his Klein lineman’s pliers and diagonals. When my grandpa passed, his possessions were also rummaged through to never be seen again.
About 6 months ago, I was at my aunt’s home and found an old oak box with my grandpa’s initials on it. I looked inside and I found the Klein pliers and diagonals. I was floored, to say the least. I told the memories of the tools to my aunt and my kids.
After several minutes of reminiscing, I placed the tools back in the box and put them away. Expecting to never see them again.
As we were leaving, my aunt brought the box and said she had never used them and never will.
After being lost for 20 years, I am the care taker of my grandpa’s Kleins. Every time I use them, I get a lump in my throat and think of my grandpa . Let me just say, they work as well as they did when I was a kid.
My grandpa used to tell me as long as people’s story keep being told they will live on forever. Keep telling your grandfather’s story, Cody.

Wonderful video! When my grandpa passed my parents allowed us all to take one thing from the house. They had sets of silverware and expensive antiques but I chose this old rusting, paint chipping off, wrought iron H that hung above my grandpa's shed. I just always remember that hanging there when he would fix up the old bikes for us to ride or get the lawn mower running for me to help mow, etc. I still remember the smell of that shed too. Now it hangs in our living room overlooking my kids as they grow up. I miss him

When my grandparents passed and all the greedy family members were fighting over the expensive things in the house.
I walked in , and right by them all into the backyard. Grabbed an old broken lamp that used to be in the living room, but had now been a garden decoration after breaking.
After I grabbed it, I didn't say anything just left. I haven't seen or heard from any of them since.
That's all I needed. The only thing important to me was finding something to treasure.

I recognize your Granddads experience of the old school wisdom from the depression and WW II era. Majority of the tools and mechanic fixes that I saw, my Grandfather and Granduncles use from those times was the combined experience of need from multiple mechanics and engineers continually trying to find ways to solve problems working in the field in mobile operations. Yes, those precious lessons and wisdom was a blessing to inherit, the oral history I wish I could’ve recorded long ago but didn’t have the means to. These oral history records you make in your Tube Broadcast are a wealth of knowledge that your great grandchildren will cherish and the visual recordings of your lives together are such a blessing the poor will never have to share other than the few still photographs of those times together. Please continue making the oral history for your family, they all will enjoy the treasures your making for them to relive when you get called home.

Though I grew up in the Midwest, I remember Coleman lanterns exactly like those from my Scouting days. I don't recall ever seeing a filter like that, though.
I understand your feelings about familiar objects from your childhood. There's a number of things my grandparents and my mother saved for me that also disappeared within a few days of their passing. I learned later a step-relative had given some of those items to her own relatives as gifts. My grandfather's arrowhead and lance head collection finally came to me unexpectedly 40 years later, and I do cherish my great-grandfather's powder horn which my grandfather had wisely passed on to me several years before his death.

This is a grand assumption but that seems like a Boomer-age person took the items, and a Gen X received one of them. They had a Millennial child that then took the tools to be used for the first time since going missing, and realized they are too high-quality to not have a story. Millennial asked Boomer the story, and they immediately sought a way to return them to you after sitting unused by Gen X for the entire time.

I could feel every emotion you went through in this video. I was a Boy Scout in the 80's and we had the same Colman lanterns. Just seeing it takes me back to camping with my dad. He was our Scoutmaster. He passed away, suddenly, 10 years ago. I never got to say goodbye. I'd love to be able to just have one more day with him. These things give such a visceral reaction. I knew exactly how you felt when you said you could remember it as if you were there. The sights, sounds, smells, and the way it feels in the hand are all things that produce powerful memories. I also know what it's like to have your own relatives ransack the grandparent's belongings prior to even having a chance to look at it after they die. I definitely shared some moments with you on this one brother. God bless.

I still carry my Father's last fishing license for good luck, but every time I see it in the tackle box, it brings a pause, sometimes a slight sniffle or a tear, but always good memories and a chuckle of the thousands of fishing and camping trips and the stories that accompany them we had together before his death in 1993. That is AWESOME! the kit is really cool, and I at 65 years old, did not know that oiled felt would stop water. but the best part of this video, is you remembering your grand dad. my dad passed decades before my kids were born. so they will never have that. but honestly, I was nearly grandparent age when my son and daughter were born. so they get dad, and grand dad all rolled up in one. I sincerely hope you can stumble across more things like that. and remember grand dad with such fondness.

    Powerful; I teared up.
My grandpa nominally had a dairy, but he really did construction grading. He had a small Chevy dumptruck and a Case tractor.
I was way east almost to Apache Junction saw a truck for sale. I bought it. It's a flat bed, but the '69 GMC C5500 evoked grandpa's rig. It smells like it, growls like it, the gears grind with manly authority. This truck is a workin' man's rig.
Took me an hour and a half to get it an hour home because the things so damn slow but I could feel Grandpa grinning with me.

We had those exact lanterns and funnels in my family.
I donated them to a local Boy Scout troop when my Dad passed away.
I converted to propane lanterns and stoves myself.
But I get the appeal of the “old school” white gas setup. It’s classic and bombproof.

My grandmother recently passed. I'm the eldest grandchild by a fair bit. She was always very supportive of my hobbies and passion through post secondary studies as an engineer. I'm currently hand making her an urn. My hobby has always been woodworking. Lately building has been a challenge. I'm constantly transported back in time with memories as you just were sharing your story. These memories are sacred and whatever connects us to them should be cherished. Makes us who we are.

My mom became a widow 3 days after my eighth birthday and was we were taught to do a lot of things with her and then for her because "she had three boys". So, kitchen and lawn chores were in our future. Now, years after she's been gone, I can visit and feel her as I rake the yard and pull the weeds by hand. Enjoy cooking and cleaning up for others, too. Great stuff for sure!

It's the same for me with Railroad items, my Dad worked for Missouri Pacific and we had all kinds of RR items at our house growing up, when they would upgrade things the RR just junked the old stuff or threw it away and my Dad hated to see perfectly good things being trashed so he would save it.

These "objects" are literally time machines. They take us back to some of our happiest times. I remember my dads old zippo from his time in the royal marines with its fairbairn sykes dagger on it with 45 commando below it. With its faded red enamel paint, it facinated me growing up with all its dents and scuffs, wish i had it even though im not a smoker. They are moments in time that we can recapture if just for a moment.

Through making this video and sharing your memories, you brought back floods of memories I have with my Grandfather, he was my hero. Just like you, that brought a tear to my eye also. I love and miss him daily, but I know he’s there guiding me on the right path and I swear I can hear him scolding me when I do something dumb and bone-headed. So thank you for reminding me of those memories.

I exactly know, how Cody feels when looking at the copper funnel.
It's like I feel when I see a Swiss Army knife with black handle scales.
My granddad was a stonemason, he made artificial stones for steps or windowsills. Pouring coloured concrete, sawing and wetgrinding the plates and blocks until the stones had the shine of marble or any other desired stone.
This was done in times, when natural stone was too expensive.
Every evening after he closed his shop he sat on a bench at a table before his house and had his dinner, bread, homemade sausage, maybe some tomatoes, cucumber or radish. He always had a bottle of beer with it, and he always used his old Swiss Army knife with the black handle scales to eat his meal.
I remember this in a way as if I'd stand right besides him, I also see his old car in the driveway before his house.

Isn't it amazing how such little things like a funnel mean so much to us? I've got some old things from my grandfathers and even some replacements that were just like what I had with them and those things mean the world to me. Oddly enough, one of those was a small ball-peen hammer. It was exactly like the one my granddad let me use in his shop while he was working.

I have similar memories with my dad, and similar reactions. We had the canvas tent with the same coleman white gas lantern, kept in a wooden box he made, complete with the funnel. What is it about that memory of pouring in the fuel? It was such a focused event. Also had the coleman 2-burner white gas stove, as well. Breakfast would be eggs and fish, if we caught any yesterday, and canned peaches or that canned fruit cocktail.
I tragically lost my dad just last month.
