I have a severe pain disorder and my dog knows when I'm not feeling well. When I have a bad day, she won't leave me alone. She won't even go outside (she loves going outside!) or eat until she knows I'm okay. One time, I was in the hospital for about a week and she sat by my bedroom door every single day. My mother had to force her to eat and go outside. My mom gave her one of my shirts and she sat on it the entire time. When she had to go downstairs to eat she brought it with her. It was so sad. :(

I have this African goose that I've lived with since I was in sixth grade. When my dad first got him he came with a female and they were always together. Also the geese would always chase me when I was near them! But a year or two ago the female goose died and the male would always stare at his reflection from the pond. My dad said he did that because he thought that he was looking at the female through the reflection. And whenever I walked really close to him, he wouldn't even try to chase or bite me. So my dad felt bad and got a female and now he doesn't stare at his reflection and attacks me every time he has a chance! So I guess I do think other animals can feel depression. Sorry this was kinda long, I just wanted to share!

A lot of birds are territorial so it unwise to get close to them and if I'm not mistaken geese mate for life or that could be flamingos... anyway to say it doesn't feel depression is wrong since it obviously felt alone when the first female died.

After my mom died, my dog wouldn't eat and just layed around for weeks. Koko had been my mom's companion 24/7 every single day for the six years my mom couldn't leave the house. We were really worried but she finally seemed to get better. Still always seemed to be sad and lethargic for the rest of her life.

I had a dog who suffered from bi-polar and OCD. When she was depressed, I would frequently offer her her favorite foods, including bacon, bananas, & filet mignon, but she would completely ignore them. She would also ignore such scrumptious treats when she got obsessed with a particular toy - in fact, when she got obsessed with a toy, she basically wouldn't eat anything until she got the toy or I relocated the toy out of her scent range.
For anyone else with a dog like this, first get the toy out of the dog's sight, then put the toy in a plastic bag, and finally put the bagged toy into the freezer. My pup would hunt for it for about a day, then mope for another day, and then she'd be back to her normal self.
I never figured out a way to help her with the depression, so her sister and I just loved on her as much as she'd let us, and she would come out of it days or weeks later. At least she would nibble a little bit when she was depressed, but she almost always lost some weight during her depression.

When my friend's grandfather died her dog Laila stopped eating. Laila would usually stay with him in the afternoons when the rest of the family was out at work or school and he took great care of her and talked to her a lot. She must have really missed him. She wouldn't eat or play for weeks and even after that she never seemed to eat with as much pleasure as she did back when he was alive. Which was really weird especially when you take into account that most dogs will keep eating for as long as you feed them.

When my family went on vacation for the first time, we left our dog with my grandparents. He was in so much distress that he starved himself for days. We had to talk to him over the phone just so he could hear our voices, which really helped a lot. My guess is that he thought we abandoned him or something like that. It broke my heart :(

I saw a mother orangutan and her baby (about 5, 6 years old) a the zoo. I visited a week later in which, unfortunately, within that time, the baby had died. There was an unmistakable difference in the female orangutan's demeanor. She was lying at the back of the cage, not moving at all, and a blanket was over her head. There was no doubt in my mind that she was depressed over her loss. :(

As a canine behaviorist who specializes in fear, aggression, and OCD in dogs... I can say that dogs can and do, in fact, get depressed. Lack of interest, loss of appetite, and lethargy are a few signs of depression in dogs. These symptoms usually occur after a significant loss or major change. Such as the loss of a loved one, moving from home to home, or even abuse/neglect. Dogs have feelings just as we do, ours are just more complex.

Of course animals get depressed. I find it odd that people even doubt this fact. Animals have the ability to love, feel joy and feel pain and they value their lives the way we do... I think it is horrible that people feel the need to TEST THESE FACTS on animals.... to figure this out... it isn't rocket science. Animals are sentient. Just like we are.

I know it may seem cruel that we have to test the fact that they have emotions but since they can't talk or express clearly what they feel like it's possible for humans to misunderstand their behaviour. I think that animals do have similar feelings to humans but I wouldn't understand how to interpret all animal's behaviour, even if it looks like human's behaviour, it may mean something else. Testing makes it clearer so that we can better help them in cases of depression for example.

We had two cats who were brother and sister. When the brother died in a sudden illness the sister reacted to it. I'm not saying she was depressed, because we can't know, but she did a bunch of things she hadn't done before.
She withdrew from contact a lot more than she had (usually (and nowadays, several years later) she likes to lie in rooms where there are people but not necessarily interact with them more than that), leaving rooms when someone entered it, curling up somewhere for an entire day (which wasn't common for her).
She stopped eating properly, in fact it took her a couple of months to get back to her normal eating levels. We took her to the vet to see if she was okay on that note, but her eating habits wasn't because of an health issue and didn't cause health issues since she started eating again after a while.
She would lie on her brother's grave. Often alone, purring despite no one being there to cuddle with her or anything.
She didn't go out as much or walk as far as she did.
She didn't catch a bird for three years following her brother's death (she used to catch several birds every summer)
She doesn't do that anymore. After a couple of years she got back to her old self again, and is now completely happy and healthy.

I once worked at an animal rescue centre and saw a little dachshund abandoned by its owner after 8 years being with them. The first few hours after being left by its owner she would sit in the corner near the gate & would growl at anyone who comes near her as if rejecting all interactions. I think in some part of her brain she is still processing reality that she was abandoned by her humans, then one of the volunteers moved her to her own pen so that she could have some "space" from the other dogs. She continued to be depressed, stopped eating for 1-2 days and would lay on her cot continuously throughout the day. If anyone comes inside her pen and tries to pet her, she would still growl. Eventually it took her about a week or so to get used to the idea that she was no longer wanted and her owner was not going to come back again for her. It was really an eye opener for me and realize that dog can feel a deep sadness just like humans do, only difference is they are not as vocal as us.

my sister went away for a long time on a trip to other countries and my dog went of his food for a couple of days, he also spent a long time by the door, waiting for her to come back and a long time sleeping on her bed, we including him were overjoyed when she came back Though the waiting by the door was a bit depressive to watch when we knew she wouldn't be coming back for a while.
He exhibited a similar behaviour when my parents went away on holiday, part of his routine was to go up to their bed with them and stay there for a bit then he'd be put to bed and even when they left for a couple of weeks every day he still went to their bed and lied down there for a while without any prompting, he even did it sometimes without us knowing and we'd find him in the dark as no one had turned the lights on, on their bed, just looking sad. We do wonder if he thought something bad had happened to them however of course he was overjoyed when they came back.

  • @Seiena

From my personal experience, yes animals suffer depression same way we do. When I was little we had two cats, and a Golden retriever. Both Rags (Ragdoll) and Golden were older animals. Golden was afraid of cats, and Rags loved her. She would lay all over her, curl up between her paws. It was really the only time you heard Rags purr. When Golden passed away. For months Rags would wander the house aimlessly yowling for Golden. The cat had never even meowed before. But the loss of Golden made this cat literally wander the house crying. Before Golden died, Rags would merely wriggle free and or run away when she saw me coming (She wasn't big on getting affection from me, She was mom's cat.) After Golden passed on though, Rags would claw or bite me if I tried to pet her. She was much less intolerant of everything, even the other cat, whom she had no issue with before became a target of her anger. She also spent all her time laying under the coffee-table between two of the legs.
And I'd hazard a guess to think that while she didn't like being given affection for me, she did actually harbor some form of affection because when I'd wake up in the middle of the night (I had bad nightmares, not night terrors, but bad nightmares) there would be two cats curled up watching me and an old Golden retriever positioned exactly center in the room where she could watch the windows and the door, and get to either quickly (I dunno if it was on purpose or she just liked that spot. Either way, once Golden passed only one cat was there when I'd wake up.

I have been watching you guys for about half a year and really love your videos and how well they are scientifically presented. Both of your chanells are great and I find it awesome that one of them presents cool scientific facts and the other one complements it by provoking a discussion on the further development of theories on scientific matters, which only further proves how awesome is is that we are constantly learning and developing as a species.
About this particullar topic I absolutely think that animals can suffer depression and I tink that the condiotions in which the animals are placed play a huge role in this. For example neurotic behaviour are observed with many animals kept in captivity such as elephants in circuses whales in sea world tend to live uch shorter lives and with the elephants the theory is that it is due to a number of factors: for example being dominated (like in the case with the monkeys that you showed) places them lower in te hierarchy and leads to depression, or the fact that appart from the strict routines they go through the elephants are normally locked up and not allowed to perform much physical activities could also lead to a decreased release of dopamine and depression.

  • @veer49

I think animals can get depressed too, but I don't think they have the intelligence to recognize their own emotions. which probably makes the animal even more anxious and confused.

Most humans don't always understand their emotions, specially when they are caused by a chemical imbalance rather than a traumatic event. If humans don't always understand their emotions, I doubt animals will.
I never said humans are smart...

    • @GayFrankenstein
      @GayFrankenstein 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** Saying that they 'don't have the intelligence to recognise their emotions' implies that that level of intelligence is present somewhere.
But I can see what you're saying with being unaware of WHERE their emotions are coming from, but to say 'recognise' also means to know what the emotion is, and many people who don't know where their strange outburst of emotion is coming from can still recognise what the emotions are. What you said, in simple terms is, 'The animals don't know what they are feeling', this is what you conveyed with your use of words.
Also the last sentence, "which probably makes the animal even more anxious and confused." is also implying that humans are more intelligent than dogs in that respect, as it can come across as meaning that humans aren't getting anxious and confused. You are saying this simply by mentioning it, and making it an important point.

    • @veer49
      @veer49 8 ปีที่แล้ว

You're reading way too much in to it. I never said most of the things you say I am
implying. English isn't my first language.
all I meant was that emotions and their origins are complicated things that I think most animals (just like humans) don't easily understand.
And feeling things without knowing what you are feeling or why is scary (to anyone including 'animals').
Your initial response seemed somewhat overaggressive to me.

    • @GayFrankenstein
      @GayFrankenstein 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

***** English is a very hard language to use, it is my mother-tongue, but I am still learning it, as it has a lot of strange rules and such. And yes, you might not have said some of the things that I said you said, but in some ways you can imply things, or they can be read differently.
I did react too aggressively initially, because I always hate it when people say (or imply) that animals are not as smart as humans, for some reason it really annoys me. I guess I read your comment the wrong way, my apologies.

My dog went blind in both eyes and was unable to hold his bowels shortly after vets told us he was for sure blind, we then took him to the vet days later and they said he was depressed because he was unable to see and play with other dogs. The vet suggested we put Lucky (our dog) down and with much consideration we decided that was best for him. ( love your guys channel )

Once a stray dog adopted my family. At first she befriended my stepdad's dog, Suusi. They would run up and down the fence together and eventually we saw the dog we would affectionately call Shadow on Suusi's side of the fence. And at first, we would see her jump right back out as soon as she noticed us. She was a straight hair collie mix with a black and white coat that I always thought looked like a cape on her back. She was a lupine, sleek, stealthy creature of the night. She wouldn't let anyone near her for the longest time. Eventually she warmed up to my mother, Bonnie. My mom would give each of our dogs a bone and then throw one to Shadow. Then she would place Shadow's bone on the bottom step of our long back porch wooden stairs. Mom would sit at the top and only then would Shadow slink around, nab the bone and dart off to gnaw on it around the rest of the pups doing the same. The bone moved further and further up the stairs step by step until Shadow one day took the bone gently from Bonnie's fingers. Next thing we knew Shadow was cautiously creeping around our back porch and into our house following the other dogs! Just a stray dog tryin' to blend in. She didn't enjoy the trip to the vet's office and having to wear her new collar, but she didn't really resist. She must have just been thankful to have found a warm welcoming home and some food in a bowl. It was very hard for us men in the family to earn her trust. We think she was abused by a man. So one day Suusi jumped the fence and got hit by a car. The driver stopped and tried to save her at the vet's. My stepfather buried her in the backyard and rolled a great big rock over for the marker. She was a remarkable dog too, as evident by what we witnessed afterward. When my mom gave the dogs their bone, Shadow took hers deep into our backyard by the heavy stone and we watched her dig a hole in the loose dirt. Shadow dropped the uneaten treat into the grave and covered it back up. She came back us for another bone, which she then slowly ate.

All animals can feel depression. I lost one of my cats, when he was still young, and my other kitty which he had taken care of like a father figure, she went looking for him everywhere. She also avoided all the places he slept, for quite a while. Our dog was quiet for a couple days, when he's usually a talker. He saw my cat when he died, and he just sort of knew. He gave my cat a kind of goodbye, and sat by the box until the men came and took my cat that passed, away.
Even though I was sad, I had to stay happy, or I would make the separation loss worse, and that could have lead to my animals becoming more depressed. Lucky enough they are doing fine now.

I spent a year as a vet tech and saw tons of evidence to the wide range of dog emotions. Working with hospitalized, sick and or injured dogs leaves no doubt in my mind that they can experience depression. I saw tons of cases were the animal whose owner visited more often or who were held more or given play therapy had much better mortality rates than the more isolated ones. You can see it in their faces, eating habits, body language and even blood work. Dogs undoubtedly have the emotional range to experience depression.

I can tell you now that my dog (a Maltese/Toy Poodle mix) gets separation anxiety when my mom leaves. My mother went into the city for 4 days while she had knee surgery done, and Zoey almost went on a hunger strike! She wouldn't eat her normal food at all, I had to feed her lunch meat (I know it's not good for them) to get her stomach to stop growling so loud I could hear it from across the room.
Also Ruby is so cute! ^_^

Depression's signature trait is unhappiness, often caused and notable by a lack of dopamine, serotonin,... If an animal uses these or similair chemicals in the brain like we do, they too could lack them and are able to experience a certain form of depression (intensity may possibly differ between species and individuals). A lot of living beings have these chemicals, because it plays an important role in 'reward learning', which is very useful for survival.

I really wish we taught animal care in public schools (second grade?). Everyone should grow up with a basic respect for dogs, cats, and farm animals. Teach children that animals have emotions, needs, and natural instincts and that hurting them is wrong. Our whole world would be better if children grew up that way.

Anyone who has been to dog shelters knows that dogs can get sad and depressed. Especially if they are abandoned by their family owners. There are enough stories about dogs who literally died from sadness after being thrown in the shelter. This happens after their very "considerate" family comes to "visit" them to see that they are OK, and the dog is so happy because it thinks that it is going back home - only to be left alone in the cage once again. Heart-break such as this actually kills dogs.

When my one cat died (old age), my other cat started moving slower and I could see his ribs and hip bones sticking out. His health deteriorated exponentially for almost a year. He uses a specific meow to call for his brother, and he meowed like that several times before he too died. So yes, I do believe animals get depressed.

I've always wondered how dogs know that death even happens, I mean, they aren't born with an innate knowledge that they will die, and they don't have anyone (or any dog) to "tell" them. I've heard they can "smell" death, but how do they know it is final? It is strange though seeing how sad they get after a loved one dies, even if they weren't there at the time of death or didn't see them after they died.

A while ago I left for a week and my dog stayed with my family. He is usually very playful and he constantly runs around and jumps all over the furniture, but when I left him my family constantly said he just moped around the house and didn't do much; and was much less interested in food, and wasn't playful at all. Pretty sure they took him on MORE walks then I would in a week, and he had a lot more people and even other dogs to play with. So, yes, I think dogs can get depressed/feel sad.

From my experience of owning and being around dogs since I was born, I have noticed that dogs do show their fair share of what seem to be human emotions and personalities. One of my dogs, Lola seems to display a lot of anxiety and her sister Sasha seems to get post partum depression after having puppies. Whether or not I'm projecting my own emotion on to them is up for debate but until I see proof, I'll choose to believe my German Shepards can empathize when I'm stressed and thus try to "hug" me and that my pit-bull died not only of old age but also of a broken heart from having lost his place as an alpha in the pack.

The dad was a little over it after a few weeks but the mom was depressed after two months!but on the puppy first b day we asked the owner if he can have a little family reunion. And they were all so happy together and now we do it every year and now they are never depressed (only when I'm gone for 2days or something)😄
