i just got me a vengence 20 and i must say im vey impressed with the quality and how its built to last also my first run produced some fantastic product that was smooth and impressive it was so worth the money spent , All my friends are gracious too LOL

Ive made alotta likk'r pots in my Time . From 30 gallon 304 stainless steel barrel pots all the way to 500 gallon pots in my past . Best pot ive ever had the pleasure of assissing on was a steamer still where the steam recirculates its self . 300 gallon boiler and two 100 gallon pots incased into another stainless tank that the steam flows around and heats the two mash pots runs to the thumper then rt to the Condencer .. that was many many years ago .no scorch no burn .
I like how your still design has the cone nice and even with the pot. I see other companies that have the copper go over the pot which seems like a waste and looks odd. Plus i think it acts as a heat sink and takes up more room. This one looks better.
I just started watching this and decided to go to the comments to hopefully get some info on some possible earlier editions ( I need something from beginning to end with a little bit of why you’re doing something one way or another. As an example, this being the first video I’ve ever watched about building a still and I’m obviously starting in the middle. But for example, why are you reducing down, and from what ID to what ID) I’m new at still building but I’m a retired Skilled Tradesmen (experimental metal model maker) so I do know how to solder and I just wanted to say some of your critics are right about how to properly solder. I don’t think they were trying to be assholes, you obviously know what you are doing but nobody’s beyond a little constructive criticism!!!

this wasnt the video i set out to watch.... a half hour later im still here,,, nice video... is this what ive heard called the cook "pot " It looks like the piece you start turning liquid into vapor or (gas ) If so,, is the thumper next ??? Im actually digging this video. i remember my Grandfather w these peices in the barn.. i think his was about 3-4 ft dia. 5 ft tall maybe little taller than 55gal drum nice job..!! enjoyed the video !!
I was watching various builds on copper pot stills. I love how yours looks where the cone fits on the top of the pot as opposed to hanging over. I noticed alot of the builder put the pot upside down in a bucket and then wrap the cone around leaving a couple of inches overhang which in the long run wastes copper i imagine. Is there an advantage to building them either way? or is it just for looks. thanks, tom
For another example, your seam would be much cleaner if you had heated from under the seam and applied your solder from the top. Just try it you’ll appreciate the tip.
Its inspiring, it makes me want to get the 20 gallon kit with a thumper. Just love the look of the copper stills. Im a glass blower , but machinist/welder by trade. I bet I can do one up super pretty.
How do you clean that thing is there a bigger opening on the side where you get your arm in there and clean any buildup on the side of the Copper Still.
Try a little wire wool to clean pipes and fittings before fluxing ,helps solder flow lots and using damp towels on hot joints can fracture solder join .👍
hmm your cape fitting is done differently from how those guys on the moonshiners show do it where it snap fits and locks,,but my question is can the bottom of the pot simply be soldered or does it need to be brazed in order to be able to take the heat of a propane burner? i see them soldering it on the show but that makes no sense since the same heat is applied there when in use may weaken the join and the solder will fall apart

16-18 gauge (.064"-.043") C12200 (Phosphorus Deoxidised) copper sheet. Same material your water pipes are made of these days. Don't use 110. As cheap as it may be it also contains lead.

Why wouldn't you tessellate the bottom of the cone then push the cone up through the cylinder? I know absolutely nothing about still making, but I know geometry, and I know if you need 100% coverage then that's the dummy proof way to save having to eyeball, tweak, eyeball, tweak, eyeball, tweak. Just over pull the entire thing and ram it up and through. If it's too hard to pass tessellate the bottom a cm or so up and repeat. Guaranteed near water tight seal before you even soLder. Yes, there's an L in soLder.
I'm not trying to be insulting in any way but you are soldering wrong. Heat draws solder. You should put the heat on the opposite side of the pipe and the solder will gravitate toward the heat.
Depends on your goal. Certain situations like building up a gap over an existing bond requires a different approach. We've went thru nearly 5K rolls of solder since forming our business. Safe to say I think we have at least a little experience working with it. We always welcome suggestions however and gladly accept your comment.
Why stop there... We offer tig welded seams for additional strength for those who want it. A course in manufacturing would educate on how to produce hand crafted items on a large scale. Appreciate the advice though

You put an awful lot of flux on there and a massive amount of solder. Also, instead of working on that nice copper plate,I would use some bricks to lay the parts on. Well, just my two cents.. Otherwise, a nice tutorial that should be easy to follow for a beginner.
We don't perform production on sheet copper, that's just for the video :) Interesting you mention too much solder, we've had customers being inquisitive of not using enough. Seems everyone has an interesting take on our production. We build and ship volume to hundreds a month, I feel we've got a winning method down, but always open to improvement.

Never solder a lap joint. Weak. Reverse bend hammer and solder.. If not at least rivet. A water tight rivet is 9x the diameter of the rivet to centers with backing plates.

guys, these folk have something to show me but I can tell you what they know of booze I can help you with , with metal. That paint brush for the flux get rid of it. Get an acid swab. The no scrub before flux, Scrub. Your joints will be cleaner, smaller and you will save a million on solder.

You have to do a cleaning run using water and vinegar.

on the cone part, wouldn’t you just need to fill the seam with solder? and not waste the solder on the edges and etc, it’s so much solder

It’s gotta handle a lot of pressure and if it leaks your burning your shed down , it may not look pretty but I’d run it
