- Our investigation reveals more than $1 billion raised by the Mormon church in Canada has been funnelled to the U.S. rather than going to charitable works in this country. We hear from former members in Canada and elsewhere who say concerns about how money is spent have led them to leave the church.

Once a religious entity claims tax exemption, there sh be 100% transparency, to dismiss any doubts and suspicion of fraud 🤷🏻♀️

The reason is... because the government is to busy with their own fraud.
You know when money becomes a requirement to obtain salvation, you might be in a Cult.
"Salvation only costs 10% of your gross income. Now that's a crazy deal!"
You know you might be too attached to money if it stops you from being more Christlike.
Never heard that salvation is attached to money, I think the LDS Church teaches that Salvation is available because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
@@raptman5425 so the idea of atonement and how it fits into our lives and can improve our capacity to act forthrightly is really beneficial when the person has internalized that idea for him or her self. Whatever mistakes we have made are already atoned, so there is no need to hang onto them or feel debilitating shame.
As an atheist, I can see the value in that lesson, and it largely parallels effective psychotherapy. But it doesn't have to be historically real, I don't need to pretend there's an afterlife, and I don't need to pay a lifetime tax in order to learn this.
It seems like the Mormon church is massively overcharging for pretty common wisdom that has underpinned Western ideals for 2000 years.

Um, when He made it in the first place?
Tell us more about your theory of a god approving land holdings. Puh-leeze.
It’s not the largest. And the church built the mall to revitalize downtown and it worked. If we are to be a worldwide church then we need to be able to fund that.

One of the big differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions is that it is a lay church. People volunteer thier time. Even the President of the church is not paid. He had a long career as a heart surgeon before joining the leadership. This allows for more money to be put into serving others. Things like the welfare system (ranches, orchards, processing plants), education (universities, online degrees, training & practicums) and of course humanitarian projects. The church gave over 1 billion to humanitarian aid in 2023 alone. The church covers overhead so 100% of donations go to the projects.

All Churches are meant to be tax exempt. There is a reason for this. If you tax a religious organization that violates the separation between Church and state and Churches will have every right to be involved (in every way) in politics. The wall of separation is tax exemption.
I'm 73 yrs old, north of the 49th parallel. After more than 58 yrs of lds church membership, leadership and general service. After a temple marriage at 18 yrs I had a family of 6 children and 25 special needs foster children (over 35 yrs). I was the main breadwinner, and after asking leadership (after the church published PROCLAMATION TO THE FAMILY) if I could stop working outside the home (separate from foster care), I was told NO, stating my husband was disabled (while he was collecting a WCB pension).
I have paid 10s of thousands in tithing.
I am inactive in the church currently. But as a former development officer (fundraiser, journalist, nonprofit manager) I came to know the lds church was demonstrating financial fraud, I stopped paying tithing a number of yrs ago. I now pay out my tithing now to soup kitchens, homeless programs, and school breakfast programs.

I can't stand Bednar and I wondered the same thing. I think he was talking to someone to his side so he was turned to face them. I think it was the lady who was asking him all the pres-scripted questions.
@@lloydmajeau3140 I think it is a corruption and leadership issue but not on the ward or stake level. All money is sent to SLC and redistributed back to the wards to use. The bare minimums are given to run each auxiliary program within the church. In many congregations, one person's tithing donations for the entire year is more than what is returned to that ward to be used for a year's worth of budget. Where does the rest of the ward member's tithing money go? Multiply that by 1000's of wards and you can see there is a problem at the top level not at the local level.
Wouldn’t you taking care of children in need be something the church should fund through tithing rather than make you pay on top of it..? Isn’t that the whole purpose of tithing in the first place..?
@@annengberg1748 Or using tithing from the ward to pay for meals that are brought in to sick and elderly... but that is just an extra we are asked to do and if you question it you are reminded you made covenants in the temple that you would do it.

Our society is different. Even without religion or politics mixed into it, we do not hug and kiss for public display. It is nothing even related to homophobia. We respect other people’s private space and public sensibilities and it may also be perhaps, a mix of cultural beliefs and practices. Overwhelming affections that may have sexual intimacy variety are best done in private, and the best to display it is only with your partner in a room where nobody needs to witness it. It's never been a secret that tithing money is used to supplement university education at BYU. I, as a Canadian, obtained my bachelor's from one of the smaller campuses and was often reminded that my low tuition was only due to the sacrifice and tithes of others. Remove tax exempt status from ALL churches/cults. Edit: Leaving this cult was the smartest/best thing I've ever done for myself. No regrets here!
We need a true separation between church and state. Tax-exempt status should not be given to any church (cult) that advocates and teaches doctrines that have no basis in fact or reality. We should defund all of these institutions by making them pay the same taxes as any other corporation. This is important at this point in time because we are facing a mass extinction event that is, in large part, the result of doctrines that define human beings as a privileged species that is above all other species and which is destined to rule, and dominate all other life forms. This view forms the basis of our culture and it is the product of predatory religious practices that are destroying the ecology upon which all of us depend.
No, that would not be just nor right!
Yes, remove the tax exemption from the church as in this video!
You ought not paint all church denominations with the same brush!
Remember, the accountant said he experienced the transparency in the other churches’ denominations accounting!? But not in the Mormon Church!
My experience has been the complete budget transparency and much of the money went to the humanitarian causes!
Many small churches barely have enough money to pay their basic bills!

I would have liked to seen some unbiased tax attorneys explaining the rationale behind the church's activities based on Canada's current tax laws. It may be that the church is following Canada's laws, regardless of whether the interviewees approve or not. This news report makes plenty of allegations of corruption, but where are the indictments from the Canadian or US governments? It's been two years since the "whistleblower guy" did his expose in the US, but I have read about no Federal lawsuits, no indictments, no IRS anything. Or what about the Canada Revenue Agency?
Also, I read that "the Mormon Church has been accused of engaging in significant tax evasion in Australia", but accused by WHOM? As far as I can tell, the accusations come from journalists, but NOT the Australian government.
Thank you for pointing that out.

Point#8 30:35 There is no church in the world that forces its members to give tithing or else. You give money became you want to, you go to church because you want to, you help people in the street became you want to. To this man and anyone who donates money and want a tax write off on your taxes, then you are not really doing the donation for the right reason. The widow's mite in the Bible. I don't think that she said, hey! want a tax write off document for my donation. Or when Judas betrayed Jesus, she said what a false of a church I want my money back. If anyone is going to do an act of charity towards another, do it became it's in your heart without thinking first on writing it off on your taxes. This man is bitter.
Hopefully people wake up and stop the donations to the cash cow
Call it whatever derogatory disparaging name you want. The donations will never end because it is a commandment and God guides his church to preach to every kindred, nation and tongue. He is the one that provides the donations through the generous faith giving of his obedient children. God blesses his true church. Only the haters will continue to hate and one day that will stop.

I am a partially disabled 70+ year old senior in the USA. I recently joined the LDS church. But to my astonishment, when I started asking questions from my better than usual Bible background and quoting scripture in support, I have been badmouthed and gossiped about from multiple male and female leaders in my “ward”. I’ve not been to church for over a year, and have texted the missionaries that “I feel so unwelcome due to repeated negative criticisms and false allegations against me, that I don’t want to step foot inside the church!” I’ve heard not another word from any of them.
I am heartbroken and stunned at what appears to be a pattern of prohibitions against women speaking up or questioning ANYTHING, especially those who are widowed or unmarried!
And prior to excommunication, there seems to be an accepted practice of a communication blackout and cruel shunning!
When I consider the stories about Jesus’ behavior and patience and words found in the Bible, I just feel like crying for “time and eternity” at the rampant mistreatment of those “others”, at the hands of these who claim to be the “restored” disciples of Jesus Christ!
Not sure what this has to do with the video.

From 1986 to 2019, I served in five bishoprics and two stake presidencies in Saskatchewan. Like any congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one of our key responsibilities was to care for those in need. We were not perfect, but I was impressed with the leaders' and members' effectiveness. We used a structured and principled approach to: 1) serve and minister to individuals, families, and communities (including those who are not of our faith), 2) share our personal and Church resources with those in need, and 3) help others become self-reliant through education, employment, and managing their personal finances. We did our best to fulfill this complex, sensitive, and nuanced work and the Lord blessed us to help many people.
