I saw the death row interview with Douglas Feldman on Death Row interviews, but I need to check out the rest of the series. also it was different than any interview style doc. It had a real dark feeling to it with the mother and the complete change in Douglas throughout his life.
      theres so many other great series I failed to mention. The 5th Estate is also one that stands out as a unique investigative journalism show, and its been around since the 50s I believe.

Together they are the perfect "match". Without the one, they are both useless. In other words, their best WAS their "togetherness". It's actually quite beautiful. And the Sherman's were a beautiful couple.

      1. I think you need help with your math 2. I think you believe billionairs should give everything they make back, while not at all seeing the fact THEIR companies employ thousands and generates millions for investors. etc.
      You have trouble seeing how the big gears in an economy really run. But yea... the poor man is generous with his $10.... if only we had a billion poor men and 1 greedy billionair.. ah, life would be so much better off, right??
      clueless.

      @@kilmoturtles1 Well said and thank you for saying all that. That's why I had to say what I did and I almost deleted it, but when I saw yours I realized, I don't need to delete my comment. Why would anyone degrade a dead man's generosity just because he was rich? In the world of generosity, I am no better than anyone and no one is better than I. Someone could be far more generous and it have NOTHING to do with money. When people are generous, we don't count it like that. We don't think twice about it, and we don't require recognition either.

    • @freudianslippers6567
      @freudianslippers6567 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      "Why would anyone degrade a dead man's generosity just because he was rich?" No, it's because it's disingenuous. His "charity" was tax deductible; too many billionaires only use "charitable" donations as a way to launder their money to overseas tax havens, anyway.
      "man creates a business that employs thousands of works" Who cares? What is the quality of employment, what is the job security, what are the wages? I could go out an pay vulnerable people $2.00 an hour to pick fruit, would that make me a wonderful person?
      "but the poor man that gives $10 is contributing more" In comparison to wealth, yes. Jeff Bezos - who has $146bn to his name has pledged $2bn to tackling homelessness and improving education... He's also decided he doesn't want to pay his workers living wages, and he's cut 2000 workers health benefits; and because of his "charity" he can not only write it off, he can receive tax breaks - added note; only 12% of philanthropy goes into human services. Nice little system these creeps have, aye?
      A poor man giving $10 when he only has $50, is a fuckload better than a rich man who "gives" $2b when he has $146b and when he can claim it back; and because of the pittance these billionaires crumb out (that contributes NOTHING to longevity of social issues) they have means to legally avoid tax... Philanthropy, then, is a means of making the uber rich look generous, while they save far more money through exploiting loopholes and using tax havens.
      "As the rich get richer, they are spending less on charity, while the poor give a higher percentage of their income to good causes - the world’s eight richest people have as much wealth as the poorest half of humanity" If that doesn't concern you, you might be a good little shill.
      Context is everything, bootlickers. ;)

      The cousins were adopted. It wasn't like they were on the streets, or even in foster care. Barry was a young man then, busy with his business. Lots of extended families aren't super close. That doesn't make them bad people. And not many twenty-somethings are interested in kids, unless they have their own.

      Louis Winter was Mrs. Sherman's younger brother. When her husband died, Louis graciously mentored her son, Barry. Louis and his wife Beverly did not think they were going to be able to have children of their own. Once Barry enrolled in University of Toronto in 1958, Louis and Beverly adopted their first child. Two years later, Beverly conceived a child, and two more the next two years. Empire was the largest Canadian pharmacy and even had the United States military as a client when Beverly was diagnosed with leukemia. Louis died suddenly of a heart attack in 1965 at age 41! His wife passed away from leukemia 17 days later, and Barry immediately attempted to purchase the company. The trustees declined his offer. The kids were placed in an abusive adoptive home. When Barry completed grad school in 1967, he made another offer for his uncle's company, this time including a provision for a fifteen year royalty on four patents for each of the children, which he never paid, and a 5% stake with a position in the company upon reaching the age of majority for each of them. He sold the company in 1972 before that ownership clause could take effect, and the children were never told about it, or the royalties that he screwed them out of. They actually had to sue the trustees many years later to see the documents and find out the truth of what happened.

    • @wanderliscious
      @wanderliscious 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      He foisted off four young orphaned children on strangers and ignored them for 16 years. Never sent a birthday or Christmas present? Never sent a card with some spending money? That's not normal behaviour. He wasn't a nice person.

    Kerry has been so steeped in hate and pain from his relationship with Barry, he can't tell the difference between fact and fiction. His sense of betrayal is huge.
    A point; the boys got bad legal advice. They should have sued Barry for 20% of the selling price of their father's company, NOT 20% of the "new" company. They were legally entitled to 20% of their Dad's company, NOT Barry's company.

      Of course it is sad to lose parents. Barry also lost his father as a child. Honey was a child of Holocaust survivors. Barry bought his uncle's small company, started over with Apotex and worked all these years to build it into what it is. Also, for many years Barry gave all the Winter boys millions of dollars to build homes, businesses. They had more opportunities than most people in this world and what have they done with them. Kerry is 50 years old and needs to take responsibility for his bad choices.

      Winter was eleven years old when Empire was sold, he couldn't possibly have been given any stake in the company or any share in the proceeds from the sale and he knows it. He has had a rough life no doubt and with the drug addiction and failed businesses his self esteem must be at rock bottom but to blame all of his problems on Sherman is self defeating. Even the judge who threw out his case basically said he was deluded.

      Joshua Riley I agree. We now know the bodies were staged to mimic a sculpture set in the home which is a mocking gesture but I also think it’s a little “too cute” (sorry, I don’t mean that to sound insensitive). I too feel it was a professional hit made to look personal. The motive may have included a personal vendetta to some extent, but this was business IMO.
      I remember someone saying (was it actually LE or just something spun by the media?) that the likely killers were long out of the country very quickly after the murders. I’ve always assumed LE’s working theory was it was a hired hit and their focus is on business rivals vs family.
      I can’t imagine they’ll ever crack it though, unfortunately. Just imagine the layers of coverup and hush money in Big Pharma, the family’s $10M reward money could be chump change in comparison.
      I don’t know if these are decent people or monsters but it doesn’t matter. Every murder victim deserves justice, their families deserve answers and closure.

That is why it says by the grace of God. It is a free gift. This seems a bit below the usual standard of 5th Estate mini-docs. Maybe this aired sooner after the crime than other episodes? There seemed to be a whole other side to the story with the family that seems overlooked. Can anyone corroborate Kerry's claim that Barry hated her? Are the other cousins cleared as suspects--are they clean from drug use? What about the next of kin--that's always the starting point for police. Did they clear the son? What's in the will... ? So many unanswered questions--I'm hoping for an update as the investigation continues.

      I'm not even going to watch it. Right from the start the narrator uses a cheesy tabloid style voice. Then I realize the voice is Bob McKeown. He's generally been a good journalist and I used to never miss a Fifth Estate but this production sounds and looks like tabloid fodder. I am listening to a March 2023 podcast by CBC which interviews all kinds of associates in a non-intrusive way. It runs for hours. Kerry Winter is a real number in that podcast too.

    There' something off about Kerry. When he talks about planning to kill Barry's wife, it's way too dramatic. He seems to be using that story as a ploy. It also seems he is looking to the right while speaking there, which indicates he is possibly trying to recall a prepared speech rather than a memory.
    The motives are there. He is a recovering drug addict with deep emotional trauma from his childhood, and is now under the pressure of owing 8 million to a man when he originally thought he would be the grand recipient.
    Also: wearing a shirt that says "never saw it coming" during a lie detector test...subliminal, much? And you could tell he did lots of research on lie detectors before..

I can't find that comment now. TH-cam is wonky of late. It's one thing to think the guy ought to be considered a suspect, and another thing entirely to proclaim him guilty because he knowingly spun a yarn while undergoing a lie detector test, which, you have to admit, does seem odd. If he had been unaware of facts, then the test wouldn't have detected deception. Maybe he IS innocent, but his behaviour certainly deserves scrutiny. Calling people idiots just makes you look like one yourself.

    • @Lionforaday
      @Lionforaday 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Apparently guilty people have a tendency to provide "to much information," and to say things like, "In fact..." or "Actually..." as though they're trying to be candid with you, and share information they don't need to. I guess we'll wait to see how it plays out, but I agree with you - he seems guilty, and had more motive than anyone else. I've no doubt the couple had other enemies, but you have to *really* hate someone to actually kill them.

      He had a lot of reasons to wish Barry dead. But so did so many others. The fact he’s being so candid and talking about means I don’t think he did do it. • @canadianroot
      @canadianroot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it doesn't add up, but maybe that's a guilty man's approach to it, thinking, "If I just admit that I hated the guy, the cops will think there's no way I did it, because it would be foolish to expose oneself like that". I have no idea whether he did it or not. I've never met him. His interviews are pretty bizarre, though. He comes off like a narcissist, and a less than average actor. I hope they solve the case quickly.

    • @Lionforaday
      @Lionforaday 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought exactly the same thing. I thought, if I were guilty, what would I do? I certainly wouldn't act guilty - slinking around, avoiding the press, pulling the shades down, so to speak. I'd think, that's what guilty people do? Then, I'd do the opposite. But if I was really smart (and this guy's not), it would occur to me that other people might figure this strategy out. You nailed it - the guy's a narcissist, and thinks he's the "smartest guy in the room."

      Sure, if you're borrowing from a bank. We're talking about a guy who lent $8 million to someone with no collateral. Getting back to the point, trying to hire a hitman doesn't require any more "closeness" than lending $8million to someone with no collateral, and in my opinion would require considerably less.
