There's this stuff called Dexpan Expansive Demolition Grout. You can drill a hole in the rock and put the stuff in. 24 hours later it should have expanded and broken the rock up for you. I have never used it but read about it. Also, you might invest in a demolition hammer. They make smaller electric ones. I'm looking at getting one myself.
One cannot do either here legally. Hand tools only, unless you own the claim and have necessary permits. Dexpan works well, but you wouldn't want to set it up in a place where rocks will fall on someone else when you are not there.

The great thing for the hobbyist is that, most mines aren't abandoned because there's no gold, silver, etc. left there. It's just that it's not "commercially viable". Again, for the hobbyist, this means *nothing,* because we don't have the overhead of a large operation! 😁
I was pleased with the results. Usually, I am not sure what to do with small pieces other than stack them up for melting. Now, I will rethink that approach as I really like the look of them after a short tumble.

There are a few processes available and better people to explain can be found with a google search. Some of the contaminates will be removed by heat and others by refining with chemicals. I plan on having some fun doing some melts, but will send the majority of the rock one day to a commercial refinery.

Nice I did t no that old cleaner could be used in the burnish stage. I new dish soap but not the borax. I think I am going to attempt to build a lap plate for polishing the cuts of larger pieces. But I might put the old cowboys and Indian figures instead of hockey cards;-)
Great video, thank for sharing. When you find silver I broken rock you can always tell by feel.run your finger over the rock and there will be a catch. Like little barbs grabbing you skin.
And now the rest of the story: I left my hammer/chisel in the truck, assuming I would use Beau's, but then we separated when the climb was too much for Daisy. I thought I would be detecting loose rock and didn't expect to find veins to extract. You can only carry so many tools or when rocks are found, there is no room and too much weight. I now have a reason to go back.

My great grandfather went west for gold. I don't think he did very well, but a creek was named for him. I tried to get a claim on it (unsuccessfully)

The white is calcite. In this area, the best silver formed on the outside of the calcite against the existing bedrock.

Some things will burn off but to do it properly you really need to do a multistep process using chemicals and heat

It's a pinpointer. They are very sensitive and work in all metal mode. I bought this one from Garrett. For obvious reasons, it is called "the carrot"

It depends. There are restricted areas for historical reasons, native lands, some parks, private property, mineral claims, etc.

What is the rock surrounding the cobalt veins, limestone? Sorry, not familiar with this area's geology.
Within most of the veins is calcite or dolomite.

The old timers mostly followed calcite veins which led them to silver where it transitioned into the local host rock.

I usually use irory soap flakes, but the borax works pretty good

Interesting coincidence. My ancestors are from Ontario, Canada. I just found your video via my interest in rock hounding stimulated by Nate at Quest for Details. I have never seen a silver mine or nuggets and what you found is gorgeous! I live far from my roots now, in San Diego, CA. Although I have always liked to wander around outside my interest in rocks is new. I just subscribed to your channel and I’m sure I will like it. Thank you for mining and sharing your adventures!

Ya it's funny seen your videos on the Montrose dump sight ten years back when we lived in Niagara now we live in cobalt area watch your silver hunts even know ty kids go to school together and ride the trails with him lol small world.

@@krystalmorrow2606 I just got back from a week boating and ATVing near North Bay. I think we called it moose hunting, but it was mostly playing with the gas powered toys. LOL Keep well. I will post another Cobalt video now.
