Prog is my favorite genre. It’s awesome. Yes, Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Renaissance, Camel, etc.

You made an EXCELLENT observation about prog rock catching on due to home hi-fi influences. Classical listeners and jazz listeners who had the disposable income already were into this, so it's no surprise to me that rock music with classical and jazz influences would join the party.

I first started listening to Prog Rock when I was about fourteen. Bands like Jethro Tull, ELP, and King Crimson come into mind as being the first. I still liked pop music and rock n' roll, but this was special. A new and different way to see life and all its wonderful and mysterious ways that changed my consciousness. It lit a fire throughout me that will never change. Soon after I discovered Pink Floyd, Yes, and then finally Genesis - I was a goner! I was hooked! The two albums I listened to the most was Foxtrot and then Selling England by the Pound. So much so that I often drove my car to the foot of the Tucson Mountains (just behind where we lived), put the external speakers on the roof and laid myself out on the hood to take in the beauty and to dream. Keep up the reviews. I was amazed that I was not only agreeing with you, but at times knew which bands and what albums were next.

Just discovered your channel. My intro to prog came from my older brothers love of The Moody Blues and Procal Harum, and my sisters love of The Beatles White album and her purchase of Fragile. I heard "Roundabout", but the track that did me in was "Heart of the Sunrise". From there I found Tubular Bells and my album collection began to grow. At 16 years (1972) while most of my friends were saving for their first car, I saved $600 for my first component stereo. Late snowy winter evenings with Tales from Topographic Oceans (through my much beloved Koss headphones) were magical! Of course I discovered King Crimson, Tull, Genesis, Geenslade, and Tangerine Dream (starting with Phaedra).. The list is, as they say endless! So thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane!

I totally agree with your analysis of prog music. These musicians were serious musicians that were masters of their instruments and the complexity of the music takes a listener that is more bent toward classical music than straight up rock & roll. This music touches your soul and your spirit! I’ve seen Genesis, Yes, ELP, Kansas, in the 70s and Steve Hackett lately. Otherworldly experiences.

Still Life sets the bar for prog...The title track, La Rossa, Childlike Faith in Childhoods end has the most profound lyrics in the genre...But VDGG is to Prog what Sabbath is to metal...Godbluff, H to He, Pawn Hearts, et al. are all unsurpassed in the prog sound; overall...Every great prog band has their master works :)..I love that you have Lizard behind you...I of course subtract Yes or Genesis, they're basically in their own genre... The Lamb is the single greatest album ever produced by a musical group...I've spent decades absorbing every nuance of it...It's beauty from the opening of the Lamb to "It" moves me and I have to hear the entire album whenever I play it...:)

Regarding ELP being "showy": This was the one and only keyboard-driven band. A keyboard is generally stationary. Keith Emerson talked about how he envied the guitarists for being mobile on stage, so he made it happen. Obviously, Palmer was showy, but he too was stuck in one place. You mention Lake didn't do much guitar work, and I don't agree with that. It wasn't a guitar band, but he played his lush acoustic ballads to slow things down in addition to searing lead work on epics like Tarkus and KE9. Lake was stationary and even sat on a stool at times for solo work when they played live, much like Fripp and Hackett. I take it you think Collins is the ultimate prog drummer, but I have to point out that Carl Palmer was recording songs like Tank when he was 20 years old. Buddy Rich praised him as a standout rock drummer, and he was influential to numerous prog drummers, by their own admission. You say they were good. Not your favorites, OK. But good? They were good? They could have played anything any other prog band did, but no other prog band could have duplicated what they did. The best keyboardist (let's hear your 10-minute-long improvisations and your jazz and blues and honky tonk and ragtime, Rick Wakeman); the most versatile, sexy, masculine voice; lightening fast bass and drums; orchestral percussion (gongs, timpani, tubular bells, wood blocks); and some of the most gorgeous acoustic pieces in music history. They were all virtuosos. Unmatched.

@@davidatkinson-Music-and-More I don't know what it means to be too virtuoso. They're easy to admire and very easy to love for me. You are right to first define what Prog Rock is before proceeding as many people seem to use a very loose definition, especially Americans. Classical influences and arrangements being the most important and pervasive. However, it is also true to say that Prog Rock often borrows from other musical genres including Jazz, Folk, and R&B, but perhaps more notably Mysticism.

yes, there's lots of interesting proto prog (1967-1969) which usually gets lost in the shuffle, some of it is more genuinely progressive and exploratory than nominal prog acts. I'd also include Egg, The Pretty Things, The Nice and Procul Harum in this category

In addition to classical, modern jazz was also very influential in progressive rock (in fact, one could argue that in America, the prog bands were groups such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report). I know Camel has been mentioned; glad to see them get recognition. If anyone is interested I can recommend so great Canadian prog groups.

I think the Prog masters never became the drugs and crazy partiers like metal and pop bands is because they were well aware they'd never be able to perform their own complex, difficult arrangements if their heads weren't in the game. And in the 70s, the prog bands were very competitive. And the audiences couldnt really be fooled. Most kids today can easily play pop and rock songs. But pulling off prog takes great talent. Prog demands real sharp cognitive abilities. You really can't get away with constant partying and play your intense long solos. And it's a good thing they didn't because the great musicians that are still around are still playing at high levels. Jon Anderson can still sing as good as he did at 25!

The first time I heard Genesis was one afternoon in the first week of January, 1974. KOME FM's Dana Jang, in introducing the song "The Musical Box," seemingly for the first time, proclaimed up front about Genesis that "this band is going to revolutionize rock." I guess the band did have an influence on many subsequently successful bands and artists, and it seems that every now and then one of them comes out and says so.
Somewhat fascinating is Tony Banks' remark not long ago that "we were always under the radar," and I'd say I sensed something similar even during their commercial peak.

I used to like (maybe 'tolerate' is the better word) Rush but as I've grown older I've come to dislike them with a passion. Geddy Lee's voice grates on my ears to as great a degree as that of the intolerable Billy Corgan. In addition to that, the music of Rush simply does not speak to my soul. On the other hand, I like the music of King Crimson, early Yes, Gentle Giant, Gong, National Health, et al as much or more than I ever have.

I'm not sure if it was just me that never heard the term progressive or if it hadn't been "officially" named back then. When was the term "progressive or prog" first used? Let's get to the most elemental aspects here. Music is an artform that expresses or communicates to the human soul/mind/heart. It addresses human emotions, memories, feelings and attitudes. It reflects hopes, desires, aspirations and/or vices. It stimulates and/or depresses with a lot of variation and nuance in between. Whatever is "in" the human being is communicated through music. Early "rock and roll", in general, communicated something fairly basic and straight forward. It basically communicated simple, less complex feelings, emotions and ideas. Portions of the youth generation (often more educated) of the 60's looked for more nuanced vehicles to communicate their feelings and ideas. Those who were trained in or otherwise exposed to musical forms which communicated more complex emotions and ideas (classical and jazz mainly) ventured to integrate those musical languages into the musical forms which were more a product of their generation. The musical product (Prog) was often more complex, varied and nuanced...like what they were and sought to express.
