Somehow, in my mind, I thought the ROG was $1500. Which made me think the LG might be around $1k. Which made me fantasize about maybe selling my 3 monitor setup and buying it. But my dreams were utterly shattered by the $2k price tag. Should have known better.
@@kleinbottled79 Anything above 60hz with Ultrawide tends to get expensive fast. I was considering going to a Twin-Curved setup with dual LG 29WK500-P just to cheap out and still get "Good Enough" for a modern Gaming setup that also does productivity tasks.

Terms like expensive/cheap are relative. You could maybe only get a couple monitor stands for the price of this monitor if you chose a different brand.

Man, I was thinkg about getting the LG 38GL950G since the first time I've heard about it in January on the CES. But now seeing it reach price points of over 2k EUR AND having to upgrade to a RTX 2080 or better a 2080 TI at least is putting me off. I've always been an avid gamer that was using high end hardware but the price point we've reached in recent years are ridiculous and not sustainable.
1080ti will run the both of these (The Asus and the LG) np's at all.

No matter what, that dimming zone trace left behind the mouse would drive me nuts! And that is only with HDR, and I dont really care for HDR. So LG is cheaper and has IPS panel and better resolution with 144-165 hz display... Win for me!
You don't care for HDR because you haven't experienced it, I'm guessing. Good HDR is truly amazing for immersion and picture quality. But overall yeah, some things are more important, some are less important. Compromises suck.
They are both 1440p, asus has higher refresh rate at 200hz with hdr1000. For 500 dollars more that is worth it for me.

I would turn off FALD for desktop use and turn it back on for gaming. Its less noticeable there.
@@rubbers3 I've seen HDR, and it's really nice, but there is no WAY I'd be able to deal with that bloom. It's absolutely brutal. I'm quite fine just using a regular IPS panel. I'll be on board once these oddities are fixed though.

I kinda cheated as my phone does wqhd and hdr. I would have picked the LG for tge clarity and accuracy of color response, the other monitor would have just been a mild annoyance especially at 2500 bucks.
Same here, I have a pair of Sceptre 24in 1080p 60hz panels, with HDMI 1.4a, DVI-D, VGA, and 3.5mm audio inputs, and other than the tinny speakers I don't use anyways, they work just fine for me, for the $99 each of them cost me with free shipping from Newegg.
U know.... Most 60hz old monitor can be overclocked to at least 75hz... freesync can be turned on non freesync monitor using software. I did mine to 83hz and freesync up to that range

Yes, there will always be products for people who have more money than sense.
But nobody I know of thought that the apple stand was legitimately worth the money, while Linus is not even questioning that these monitors are worth every penny for those who can afford them.

The HDR on the LG are not really that amazing most people turn it off.

This is the reason you don't break the bank for an upgrade, you can live for decades with 60Hzs and be perfectly happy but as soon as you go high refresh you cannot go back, then maintaining the gaming habit suddenly becomes a lot more expensive.

The best time to upgrade will be a year or more out when the new G-sync module make it into some other panels. The first gen tech in the Asus isn't worth the premium atm, once prices drop about a grand then is the best time to get onboard with HDR for PC.
Late 2020, when DP 2.0 comes out is the time to upgrade. Then we can have 4K 144hz HDR with 4:4:4 sub sampling.
Happy with my x35, I haven't noticed much ghosting at all.

my nvidia control panel forces "limited" colors when i switch to the Ycbcr 444 setting as opposed to RGB
so if i use RGB (not sRGB) is that better than the ycbcr 444 because the "output dynamic range" says "full" on "RGB" but "Limited" on Ycbcr 444

what is situational, HDR-only induced halo compared to full-fledged, constant screen bleed on 99% of the IPS panels out there (including these ones).

Linus don't make the error to try HDR on a 8bit settings, that is why you lose details in the highlights and shadows.

If you can get insurance on it... Fan is a popular piece that tends to either start making noise or go out all together.

You can tell he doesn't do a ton of gaming at home, because otherwise he'd keep the cats the HELL away from the computers.
Though I definitely winced when he/she scrambled down the front of the expensive monitor. I'm guessing the anti-glare coating is not quite cat claw proof.

32:9 is the same as 2 16:9's so you basicly Lose the amazing Features of 21:9's or ultrawides in General.
Using a di gle Programm on a 32:9 is totally wasted horizontal space cause vertically it can't keep up.
For example Image Photoshop or anything.
Take an A4 paper turned by 90°.
With 21:9 now you can see the whole paper and you got your Studio Tools on the left and right side.
With 32:9 you basicly waste some centimetres at each side of the paper and you also have to Look way more to the left or right to see your studiopanels.
Honestly 32:9's are totally dumb imho.
There is some usage for it but damn.. Given the price they make very little sense.
Neraly nothing i'd wanna use 32:9 for that wouldn't be possible with 2 16:9's.
Even for videoediting it doesn't make such a huge difference

Still rocking the AW3418DW Alienware ultrawide here. 120 hz 34 in 3440 x 1440 ips. Got for $500 brand new off craigslist. Love it. I'd probably go with the 38 inch LG. Not that big on hdr yet

Reminds me of when I got my first LCD monitor back in the day. My CRT died and needed a new one. I got a 17" lcd with 2ms response time and that was fast at the time.. a year later, I saw 1080p monitors with 2ms response times for same price...

LG for life! I Own a 24gm79g-b - gsync works like a charm on that 144hz. Plus a LG 34wk95u-Wc for EYE candy. Like in MMOs. No problems with any LG monitor I owned. And btw a Nice Shadow Beerus.

Ill stick with my Nixeus 144Hz 24" monitor with Freesync. Very happy with it and these new ones don't offer enough to make me think about getting a new one.
