Brilliant. So frustrating this isn’t a feature on TH-cam yet as they really put shorts on every search on desktop where the content just makes no sense.
I agree with "I'm getting dumber each time I watch shorts"... ... I'm not into short video (I hate tiktok and any similar platform idea)... ... once TH-cam implemented them I found myself one day spiraling in a couple of hours of random shorts, before noticing the time passed: it's a form of contect that release spray of interest, but actually "turn off" the active brain. As a former addicted to a lot of things, I immediately understood why are so catchy, but also so dangerous, and disabled them forever. A longer video has to prove some value to catch me in its entirety, or I simply skip... in 30sec the brain cannot process if it is really good or bad... it is the same format once used for advertising: 30 second to grab attention but not question the actual content.
Bro same I've never had tiktok installed but when TH-cam shorts appeared I started watching it and since it's consuming my morning time like crazy, every morning starts with at least one hour watching this dumb videos making me absolutely numb. Yea this should be, but i am 99% sure that they intentionally put them on the same page, and also in SIGHT when youre opening youtube. From a business optimization perspective this makes sence, since shorts are clickbaity and addictive so it makes people watch more videos

That would be fine. I don't like seeing them on the home page. I don't like the format, at least not for youtube, and tiny videos generally aren't worth my click. The way TikTok does it is different, it just plays one after another, and you can't even search for anything, or so I've heard. You are actually getting a long experience built from lots of random content. That just doesn't work for youtube.
What is terrifying is that this video was the first recommendation by the algorithm! And the fact that I've never searched for this topic but only had it in mind is even more terrifying!
The algorithm is pretty good at showing you videos you want to see, but there's some statistical bias as well. If you didn't care about blocking shorts, then you more likely wouldn't have clicked on the video. So it's natural to see a lot of people here that would like to block shorts. It's also pretty natural to think about getting rid of shorts since when you pull up the youtube app half the phone screen is a tiktok ad and the other half is youtube shorts.
A few months ago I started deleting all of my social media. Now, the only one that I use is TH-cam. I honestly think it's pretty good, I only watch videos of my interest. Until "shorts"started to show up. Now this is huuuuuge help to get back on track. Thank you!
social media at its core is trash. it is superficial, promotes herd mentality ("more likes = better"). and people who say one platform is worse than the other (tiktok blabla) has no clue. they all LITERALLY do the SAME thing, ultimately they're all trash.

The best shorts are exactly like TikTok. The worst shorts are made by kids or scammers. The TH-cam algorithm for shorts can't seem to figure out what is what, while TikTok has it down. I think the ratio of what I personally find to be good content on TikTok is close to 4 in 5, while TH-cam is closer to 1 in 10.

Do you know the huge positive impact you are doing with this video? This is blessing. These companies push anything into our throat to make money. I would love to see a video showing how to block shorts in the smartphone app
The way I did it was by clicking the little “…” icon on the shorts video (while the short is still on the homepage, not actually playing) and just selecting “not interested” for all of them until there are no more, close and re-open the tab/app and there ya go
i find in the browser when shorts on youtube show up, you click on the 3 dots and close shorts and it stops showing them for 30days, it also doesnt show shorts on the youtube app (but they do show below a video you have been watching). thats how i notice if i need to click the vutton again as i will see shorts on the app. but i watch a lot of youtube on my pc which is why i can disable them often. but really we are at a point in tech that we should be able to choose and set up how we want to watch in the first place, currently i am getting annoyed by the amount of videos that are similar to content i watch but i dont want to watch them so half the options to pick from are random crap i click not interested too and it replaces it with something similar. same as well for when i have unsubscribed from a channel, it keeps showing their videos even though i have lost interest for the channel and i dont want to give that channel a "dont recommend" but i am fed up having to say not interested so often to videos.
One thing I have to say: There are some old videos that have been converted to shorts (mostly old memes) automatically by youtube. If you search for them they wont show up. Some times you have to disable the block to finde the videos. I also have a feeling that since shorts have been added its harder to finde stuff through the search on youtube.
That is exactly what i noticed. When you search for something, you otice some related videos, and then a blast of unrelated shorts, which is hella frustrating
This is great! One of the reasons I discontinued TH-cam Premium was the inability to turn off Shorts. I don't want to pay for a product that offers insultingly little control over it and attempts to manipulate me. I also would love the ability to sort my subscription feed. For instance, I'd like to have separate feeds for politics, engineering, music, or tech. There are times when I go months without wanting to see a single political video. Similarly, there are moments when a specific channel posts an excessive amount of content on a topic I'm currently not interested in. If sorting subscriptions was a TH-cam Premium feature, I'd gladly pay for it. Then again that kinda feels like extortion. Maybe similar to this script we could build our own user interface for youtube that simply ports the videos over into a layout that respects the user.
Omg sorting subscription feeds would be great, I do indie game Dev and music production as a hobby and I have to scroll through regular entertainment channels to find the tutorial channels and it's a pain.
I created separate google account to have different yt accounts as well, one for usual entertaining stuff, and another one for my target languages and learning stuff (different subscriptions, playlists etc), so that my feed would be also kind of curated! But i don't have yt premium for either of them so i don't sure if it's helpful
yt shorts just make me lose brain cells and give me an anxiety boost every time i watch them it’s just like the reccomended i get gives me very catastrophic videos and makes me nervous and anxious, and i want to live a calm and peaceful life without thinking about that the worst is going to happen. so ya thanks very much
Click on "not interested" in all of the shorts you have on your feed then refresh and they'll disappear you'll no longer find them even after closing up the app
It's worse than just not caring, they know people want it and actively work against it because they want people addicted to it. The option to hide shorts existed (albeit they only let you hide it for 30 days, not permanently) but even that was too much control, so they removed it.
2 main things I dont like about YT shorts. 1. The makers still try to put in all their standard stuff. So now in a 1 minute vid theres the bait, the intro, the promo, the call to action, the outro, something silly, and THEN somewhere towards but not quite at the end is 1 moment of actual content. Instead of having those same things in a 5, 10, 15 minute or longer video that gives me much more content relative to the filler. 2. The try to keep me from having standard controls. So no fwding to the relavent content, no I have to sit through the whole thing to get to that 1 moment. There is an extension to view shorts in the regular player that fixes this bit. So its not as important as the 1st point. Thanks c.t. for making this vid!
There's a way to view shorts as normal youtube videos, with all the controls. You just need to put the video URL code in the format of a normal video. I don't know if there's an extension for that.
On top of that, shorts have been a buggy mess since they were added. They constantly switch to the next video without me swiping. TH-cam shorts on paper seemed great, short form content to watch whilst waiting in line or sat on the toilet but in the end you just get clips from the long form vods and you struggle to watch one to completion before it tries to force another video down your throat.
I searched on TH-cam today and I had to scroll past MULTIPLE bars of shorts that were IRRELEVANT to my search. Thank you for helping me eliminate that problem so efficiently.
TH-cam enhancer allows you to block shorts on the website also, but I could not find anything for the youtube mobile app. Just delete the app, and download it only when you need it to search for something
I don't usually comment a lot, but I want to show my appreciation for this video! I subconsciously watch TH-cam Shorts when it appears on my feed and it makes me waste hours and hours lying on my bed and consuming so much content. This helps a ton, thank you so much :)
I'm a student pilot and I've wasted too much time on this instead of studying. I've tried everything but failed. Thanks to you, your code has removed the Shorts button, so I won't waste any more time while I'm using TH-cam. All the love from Syria
I might need to do this honestly. Shorts are addictive as hell and it's something I always realize but still fall in the trap. Especially when I go to look at my phone before bed. There's an hour gone everyday.
This is incredible. I love watching youtube videos while I work, listening to video essays, learning about new things, but shorts allways seem yo distract me and waste my time, making me feel hollow inside afterwards. Now, if thete was a way to block them on the mobile app too, I'd be in paradise.
Definitely appreciated, it used to have a toggle on mobile which is my main weakness. I like checking them out once in a while because there's some informative and fun ones but it's so easy to accidentally be in it and get eye grabbed on something

This is very easy to customize as well. I don't want the Shorts shelf on the main page, shorts in descriptions or the shorts link on the left bar but I do still want the Shorts tab on a channel's profile so if I do actually want to see the shorts from a specific channel, I can still easily seek them out without having to deal with them elsewhere on the site. Comment out a few lines and bam, it's good to go. Great job.
I do programming, and sometimes a guide maker had only published a guide for let's say culling but only in shorts format, I still want to see the shorts tab on his profile page but not at my home page or in the side suggestions. Also codes are long and are case sensitive, very often, the guide already moves on to something else, eyeing letter per letter is not as simple as it sounds. On Shorts you can't scrub / seek the timeline, you also cannot slow down like 0.25x speed.

What I want when I visit a creator's page is the MOST RECENT VIDEO that they have published. Why show me old stuff?
I've got nothing specifically against TH-cam videos which happen to be of quite short duration - sometimes you don't need 8 mins to convey the content - but TH-cam Shorts as a format can go jump in a lake (toned down to comply with community-friendly guidelines).

Aside from getting dumber watching shorts, doesn't anyone else feel like really sore after spending too much time on shorts? like all your energy is depleted? One day at school a teacher was talking about that, and i was already at the time in this process of self improvement so i agreed a lot with her, but one thing that she said really struck with me. It was something like "After you finish your work or a difficult task you just want to lay on the couch and rest for a little while, but you bring your phone with you and start scrolling on tik tok. Then time passes and you get up again but you still feel sore, like you haven't rested at all." That felt so relatable, like really, you can't spend too much time in there because your brain kind of goes off and you're just spending time and energy on something completely unproductive. Just wanted to get that out, sorry for my bad grammar, english isn't my first language.
dude ikrrrr, few days ago i also felt kinda similar thing, like when im "resting" and scrolling thru shorts, it js makes me even more tired, but after some stuffs like studying or cleaning my room, which obv takes energy, i still, comparatively, feel less tired and exhausted. i hope u get what i mean, ignore my bad english :P

I never watched shorts because my interests are usually covered in the 5-10 minute videos. It wasn't until YT started cramming them in my feed that it became difficult to get rid of them. THANK YOU!
I think me continually having the auto-play off on TH-cam saves me from the worst of shorts. Except that shorts without autoplay still loop and repeat, which like most Chrises will attest to, also seems to remove IQ points every time it loops. I really wish TH-cam, other than adding a default pause/no-repeat control, that they would let creators use it as a teaser for their own content. Since MOST shorts are sub-clips of larger videos, this would achieve YT's desire to have us watch more content, and engage... and provide a springboard for creators to interest and attract more viewers, and subscribers. e.g. "Hey, this short from Gale Banks comparing a turbo to a supercharger was pretty neat, ... oh... there's no link to jump into the video they clipped this short from." "... guess I should just watch the next video about twerking cats that are also ninjas..." So, since they can't make nice things, and instead want mindless doom scrolling fit for the short-term attention span of a caffeine addled gnat: DEFINITELY applying this. Thank you Chris for pointing this one out.
I can't blame guide makers use shorts for the algorithm, but the problem is you can't scrub / seek the timeline when on shorts format. I do programming and paracord knots and I have to wait for the shorts to play from the very beginning every time.
@@MangaGamified You can seek through shorts on mobile, but you can't on desktop for some reason. There's a progress bar at the bottom of the video, but you can't click on it to scrub through the video.
I use a YT shorts block extension, and it allows me to see the shorts. But the moment I click on it, the short gets forced into a long format video, which prevents me from scrolling endlessly and also stops the video from looping.
@@No-Clipper.21rd Can you please share the extension? shorts are dangerous on cooking guides cause you have to wait for the short to repeat everytime. Like they toss many ingredients in a short span of time not to mention they are in grams.

Dude, this video was recommended on my home page, and it feels like a total blessing! TH-cam shorts always made me waste hours upon hours when I could have actually watched a much more fulfilling, "Normal length" video. Thank you very much Chris, you got yourself another subscriber!
I really wish there were an option to do this on mobile without having to use some sort of proxy. Mobile is definitely where most of my time gets wasted on Shorts. I know I should just "choose" not to watch them, but all it takes is one mistake to lose hours. With Shorts being so short, it requires such little commitment that my mind doesn't have a good enough "feeling" to resist it, and then that continues on for each Short (plus that natural physical instinct to swipe to the next Short). I don't think this sort of content should be illegal, but I do think it should be mandatory to have settings to disable it as this is highly exploitable content. Anyway, thank you for a solution for PC/browser.

Guys I figured out the trick for how to get rid of them on your phone. You have to select not interested on the shorts that first pop up on your home page. Do that continuously whenever you see them on your home page and eventually the algorithm will stop recommending them to you. Also, because the YT algorithm recommends videos based on your watch history, delete any recent shorts you’ve watched from your watch history, even ones that your friends show you. This will take care of the issue entirely. You will need will power to not watch shorts under videos you watch, the only way to avoid them is to not watch them (again willpower). I’ve now gone 3 weeks without watching shorts and it’s helped so much. I’m so happy I discovered this. It’s an amazing feeling to open up YT and not see them. I wish you all the best!
I actually started doing this hoping it would help me but I still get shorts every other time I open the app. Refreshing the home page will sometimes show them and sometimes won’t but when they do if I hide them again it’ll usually go away for a good while. I just wish we didn’t have to do all of these shenanigans
I saw a video on how to do this a few months back and it works. Once in a blue moon they show up again but then I just keep selecting not interested on all of them and they are gone.
The problem is that youtube converts short videos automatically into "shorts". I uploaded a video of 94 seconds and now it appears as a "short". Well, it actually is short but the format would be widescreen.

Sir, I needed this. It’s my weekend and last night I was scrolling through shorts and by the time I sent to bed I had noticed I was on there for SIX hours!
My trick so far has been, that I didn't allow myself to scroll through shorts. So I just got exposed to shorts by subscribed channels and the few that you actually see in the homepage. By now it has become a reflex to just tap back when a short is over. This has saved me so many hours of my life so far but now I might actually disable them. Don't know yet, bc it would be nice to still see the ones uploaded by channels I follow in the subscription section without having to check every channel manually.
I really need to thank you for this! These days, it's so easy to get distracted. I can delete the apps from my phone, but I need my laptop to work and I can't just delete something like TH-cam, but this makes it way less distracting! This will save me hours!
Another good way to block them but still be able to watch some shorts is disabling youtube history activity. I dont know how old your son is, but my 16 year old cousin also has a shitty attention span, while gaming or doing something he will just pull his phone out, open youtube and watch a short, and keep scrolling, after some time he just closes youtube so when he opens youtube it opens the shorts, so he will just keep scrolling. Told him he should stop doing this multiple times but its "not too bad" in his eyes
Start helping them, have them read a book or read it with them. Do something that challenges their attention span vs degrading it like shorts/TikTok.
Take away the internet entirely, give him a nonfiction book.

What we're you addicted to that you could indetify the similarites ?

I used to be totally against the short form video's, but in the past year or so I kept watching more and more. I can no longer browse youtube without being tempted to click on a short and then just feeling empty afterwards.
I am hoping to take a step back and to distance myself a bit from short form video's. And I think that this is a great way to do it. Thank you!
I think TH-cam should have a tab for shorts and tab for normal videos to keep things separate. Some people want shorts and some don’t. There should be an option to remove them with needing to do this but there isn’t. I’m thankful for this developer
Yea this should be, but i am 99% sure that they intentionally put them on the same page, and also in SIGHT when youre opening youtube. From a business optimization perspective this makes sence, since shorts are clickbaity and addictive so it makes people watch more videos

Yes not Just separate but Fully different app altogether
That would be fine. I don't like seeing them on the home page. I don't like the format, at least not for youtube, and tiny videos generally aren't worth my click. The way TikTok does it is different, it just plays one after another, and you can't even search for anything, or so I've heard. You are actually getting a long experience built from lots of random content. That just doesn't work for youtube.
what sucks is there already is a tab, but they put them in the main feed too! like leave us alone!!!
What is terrifying is that this video was the first recommendation by the algorithm!
And the fact that I've never searched for this topic but only had it in mind is even more terrifying!
Same!!!!! I was sincerely creeped out when this video appeared because I had thought about it this morning and forgot to actually search for it
it's actually quite understandable if you learn or just understand how videos algorithm work
The algorithm is pretty good at showing you videos you want to see, but there's some statistical bias as well.

I feel like youtube shorts was only created to oppose tiktok or something like this. I also find very little to no value in watching shorts.

One thing I have to say: There are some old videos that have been converted to shorts (mostly old memes) automatically by youtube. If you search for them they wont show up. Some times you have to disable the block to finde the videos. I also have a feeling that since shorts have been added its harder to finde stuff through the search on youtube.
Lately the TH-cam search is very crappy. On the phone, only maybe the first 10 results are related to the search term
@@joseislanio8910 omg yea thats so annoying, on my pc its not even 10. its 5 or so, then "recommended" stuff, then 5 again, recommended and so on

That is exactly what i noticed. When you search for something, you otice some related videos, and then a blast of unrelated shorts, which is hella frustrating
And when TH-cam shows you the unrelated video/short results, it consists of random drama videos, inappropriate or messed up things
Might be worth checking the PocketTube extension
Omg sorting subscription feeds would be great, I do indie game Dev and music production as a hobby and I have to scroll through regular entertainment channels to find the tutorial channels and it's a pain.
I agree so hard I’m currently paying for premium and I think it’s completely bullshit I can’t disable shorts on my feed
I created separate google account to have different yt accounts as well, one for usual entertaining stuff, and another one for my target languages and learning stuff (different subscriptions, playlists etc), so that my feed would be also kind of curated!

@@_anon thanks for the explanation
I did the same a while back haha
At least they should have it as a Premium feature to disable Shorts, since it's just an ad funnel anyway.
Thanks c.t. for making this vid!
what I don't like about them is that you can't watch them at a faster speed 😬
There's a way to view shorts as normal youtube videos, with all the controls. You just need to put the video URL code in the format of a normal video. I don't know if there's an extension for that.
@@MrTomyCJ there is and I use it but the problem is that I watch most of the vids on the app 😬

Then time passes and you get up again but you still feel sore, like you haven't rested at all."

I never watched shorts because my interests are usually covered in the 5-10 minute videos. It wasn't until YT started cramming them in my feed that it became difficult to get rid of them.
THANK YOU!
The shorts always distract me from searching other videos, and I have been finding ways to remove them. Thank you so much for the tip!
Tiktok and shorts gave me overthinking that lead to my anxiety and depression.
It's kind of ironic how the best videos on this fucking platform are tutorials on how to block parts of it.
Since MOST shorts are sub-clips of larger videos, this would achieve YT's desire to have us watch more content, and engage... and provide a springboard for creators to interest and attract more viewers, and subscribers.
e.g.
"Hey, this short from Gale Banks comparing a turbo to a supercharger was pretty neat, ... oh... there's no link to jump into the video they clipped this short from."
"... guess I should just watch the next video about twerking cats that are also ninjas..."
So, since they can't make nice things, and instead want mindless doom scrolling fit for the short-term attention span of a caffeine addled gnat:
DEFINITELY applying this.
TH-cam added a feature where you can link to long form videos in a short. pretty useful
@@No-Clipper.21rd Can you please share the extension? shorts are dangerous on cooking guides cause you have to wait for the short to repeat everytime. Like they toss many ingredients in a short span of time not to mention they are in grams.
Thanks a lot for this. Is there a mobile version of this?
yes please!
I'm interested too
Revanced is a much better version of TH-cam without ads, Allows you to disable Shorts and bring back some small elements from old app UI.
@@enkephalin.where do you block it in revanced? searched for a button to turn off shorts, but didn't find one
edit: found it, thanks for the reminder
ps: get yourself revanced too guys. it is phenomenal!
Just use the I'm not interested button for a long time and they will disappear on their own, I also recommend deleting from the history and when you click one by accident delete it instantly.

Man, I have no word to thank you, I am student who is addicted to shorts. You saved my life. Love you from India.
Dude, this video was recommended on my home page, and it feels like a total blessing! TH-cam shorts always made me waste hours upon hours when I could have actually watched a much more fulfilling, "Normal length" video. Thank you very much Chris, you got yourself another subscriber!
why did someone else comment this exact same thing word for word
Go to where they are then press the three dots and then hit not interested
Same, it almost ruined my carrier
Is there a possibilty to do same on a phone ?
This is the main question. Disabling it on desktop is useless
@@Not_SatoruGojoSame, got an answr ?
Not through the app sadly.
@@Not_SatoruGojo What an idiotic thing to say. A lot of people don't use YT on their phones. Shorts are only a nuisance on PC for them.
If you have Android, TH-cam revanced
Shorts can be so depressing and bring up old memories or sad content & when your depressed & suicidal you just dont wanna see be reminded of why you don't wanna wake up ever again.
For those on android, this is an option in ReVanced
Please elaborate
@@nishant_bhardwajTH-cam Revanced Manager is an open source apk modder and repacker. You can modify the official youtube app, among many things get rid of ads, video banners covering the video, get rid of shorts and many other settings and customizations.
It's open source and it simply modifies the original apk you obtained yourself.

If I had willpower I wouldn't need to block shorts would I.
Thanks for the lack of help 😂
I actually started doing this hoping it would help me but I still get shorts every other time I open the app. Refreshing the home page will sometimes show them and sometimes won’t but when they do if I hide them again it’ll usually go away for a good while. I just wish we didn’t have to do all of these shenanigans
I saw a video on how to do this a few months back and it works. Once in a blue moon they show up again but then I just keep selecting not interested on all of them and they are gone.
This does not work. The "Not Interested" button is a placebo. They didn't even program it to do anything.
@@OverlandOne Exactly💯
OMG thank you for this. I can't stand shorts. Worked like a charm and so simple.
The problem is that youtube converts short videos automatically into "shorts". I uploaded a video of 94 seconds and now it appears as a "short". Well, it actually is short but the format would be widescreen.
Is there any similar project for the mobile app?🙏
Just use the I'm not interested button for a long time and they will disappear on their own, I also recommend deleting from the history and when you click one by accident delete it instantly.

Awesome vid! Also, I love the synchronised hand gesture with the guy in the thumbnail at 0:17
Lol you are good at noticing things
Thank you so f much. I hate shorts. I just HATE them. You saved my mental health and nervous system.
Just want to say anyone who has decided to change their life by wanting to block TH-cam shorts I am proud of you👊👊
Thank you for this! I have so many 20+ min videos saved to watch later and would rather watch those than Shorts!
Some Shorts are funny/interesting but for the most part completely useless and not good for our attention spans and memory retention!
God bless those able to break free from that addicting scrolling habit!
Thank you so much for this good info! I was eager to see this tutorial.
TH-cam should have implemented the option to disable Shorts ever since they first released them.
Ohhhh wow I usually log on my subscription page and there are always 20-30 shorts, and it blinks 5-6 times to load shorts, now it is loading faster and no blinking.
Thank you soooooo much
Thanks for the tutorial. Is there anyway to apply this on mobile as well?
Sir, I needed this. It’s my weekend and last night I was scrolling through shorts and by the time I sent to bed I had noticed I was on there for SIX hours!
HOLY :o
Sounds like you have no self control 😂😂 no one is forcing you to keep watching
These are the types of videos that I really like, it's short, informative and easy to do yourself!
Dare I say you like shorts?
@@Kermit2kA joker are you?
The best is that it can be watched both horizontal and vertical in full screen👍
Most Shorts are just 1/3 in vertical
short, but not a Short. I like it.
A welcome irony.

It completely disables home and shorts tabs because youtube no longer recommends anything if you don't let them harvest your data, it won't let you mindless scroll through shorts, and also you are improving your privacy.
But I have subscriptions, so when they do shorts, they still appear 😡
@@JanSzafranski If you dont want to see any shorts just do what Chris does in the video. This is to prevent mindless scrolling while still being able to see shorts
