I have an extension that blocks shorts on TH-cam, and links to shorts only link to a regular video, that doesn’t loop and doesn’t have a feed. It’s actually noticeably helped my attention span and productivity.
But why on earth would they do that when most people dont complain and it keeps 'engagement' up? I believe they'll do the same thing as yt did for the 'disable autoplay for playlists' suggestion - ignore until people start doing things
I’m pretty sure you can disable shorts on the home page of TH-cam. Click the three dots icon in the corner of the shorts bar and click “dont show this again” and it should not show shorts again. This only works for the home page though, not the shorts page.
I genuinely feel a chemical reaction in my brain when I’m on tiktok for a long period of time (an hour), it genuinely feels brain rotting and degrading to watch, and it’s something that you have to notice yourself to realise it.
That is EXACTLY the reason why I've used that app maybe once or twice before deciding to forget about it entirely. It just feels like a waste of time, in a way.
Rotting is a weird way to put it. I would say it's more like it's trying to suck up the information but it's not getting the benefits of actually learning so it's more like a dry sponge.
Exactly, that's why I don't watch youtube shorts anymore. The only short form of content I do watch is Instagram reels but I don't spend much time on it either.
Im depressed and youtube shorts are heavily amplifying this feeling. Because my life already feels devoid of meaning the meaningless content fits right in there, making me waste away till midday or someone/thing pulls me out of bed
Just delete Instagram/tiktok. I know it sounds impossible to do, just because how big they are in most people’s lives. After a couple of days you will forget they even existed, and start to appreciate the smaller things in life.
Funny thing, he actually utilized a lot of the strategies in this very video. Notice how there’s never a moment of silence in the video, there’s always some kind of music in the background, he’s never a single shot in front of the camera talking for more than 30 seconds, and he’s cutting to tons of stock footage? Yeah, retention and dopamine. But he has to do it, or else you would not have finished the video.
Yeah our attention spans are shorter due to TikTok, reels, and yt shorts We need our short attention spans to be stimulated, thus the reason why there's gameplay under the video
I agree, most Shorts are already just ads for longer videos. making that a baked in feature (linking to a longer video) would solve a lot of the current issues.
Awesome video. I hope you’re right. Long form is definitely more fulfilling to watch (& create) imo. But sometimes I wonder if me saying that is similar to the archetypal old man saying “back in my day [we did things better]”
Fellow old man here. You'd think me ADHD would make me love short format content but I actually really hate it. I like content that actually answers questions. Content that explorers topics. Content where at the end of the video I know WHY 2+2=4 instead of just knowing that 2+2=4 but have no idea how we go there.
The problem is that these videos are not focussed on content, they are focused on Attention. Only attention. They don't give a fk if they provide any content, you watched the video anyway.
@@M_k-zi3tn The topic on whether this stuff has actually decreased our attention span is actually an interesting discussion. There's evidence that claims it has but there is also counter evidence to say it hasn't. Apparently this argument has been going on for much longer than smartphones have been a thing (in other generations). There is a really good TH-cam video on this but I forgot the name :/
Short form content is completely mind numbing and designed to encourage you not to think for yourself. Whenever i watch it i feel myself switching off completely, and try to stay away from it as best i can
Since the dawn of time, TH-cam has been my favorite media platform by far. From let's-plays and sketches to educational content, I loved the format of the content and the creators it rewarded. People like Mr. Beast, Mark Rober, or Markiplier, who have an admirable moral compass and can give a lot to the community. One of the main reasons I loved TH-cam was because it differed from most social media platforms that push low-effort and low attention span repetitive content. On the contrary, TH-cam wasn't exploiting our brains' tendency to crave an immediate reward. Instead, it was full of longer videos that gave you knowledge or other long-lasting benefits instead of ADHD. While the TH-cam community was one of the factors that influenced the content produced on the platform, a big role was played by the platform regulations and the TH-cam algorithm. The introduction of the algorithm that incentivised 10+ min videos and preferred watchtime over views massively helped to combat the rise of clickbait and promoted content that is entertaining throughout the whole video. This format was not only enjoyable to me and most of the community, it also prevented the creation of a toxic, attention-seeking environment that took over Instagram and Facebook, and thrives on apps like Musically and TikTok. A couple of months ago, TH-cam introduced the Shorts sub-platform. While I was excited at first that the TH-cam developers are working on innovating the platform, it didn't take long for me to realize the negative impact of this feature. First of all, the Shorts represent everything that I (and most other people) don't like about other social media platforms, and the reason why TH-cam was my favorite one. Second of all, it's incredibly sad that instead of Shorts becoming a platform for short TH-cam videos, it basically became a second TikTok on TH-cam. Many Shorts are just reposts from TikTok, which means there is no effort needed to create such Shorts and it's really hard to compete with the flood of TikTok trash when you are a genuine TH-cam creator. The ability to post anything from TikTok on Shorts means free money for TikTok creators (and TH-cam, unfortunately), which in turn means less money for OG TH-cam creators, either those creating Shorts, or those creating old-school 10+ min videos. The introduction of Shorts, a.k.a. "the second TikTok" to TH-cam adds no additional value to the platform or the society in general, and will likely result in a downfall of the original TH-cam content we all love.
There is something incredibly dark about tiktok videos. There's always been adicting screen content. But the difference is I don't feel good when I watch shorts/reels. Video games, TV, even TH-cam videos are addicting, but I at least always had fun when I burnt hours on them. I will catch myself spending 20-30 minutes scrolling through shorts, and I am aware that I'm not having a good time. I don't feel good, I feel stressed. I've never seen anything else that is simultaneously addicting and upsetting at the same time.
My guess for why people are moving towards podcasts is not because of wanting longer form content but because everyone in this day and age is starting to feel more n more disconnected and podcasts help people develop para-social relationships to satisfy that need
I didn't get what you said lol But in reality I think podcasts are a way more heard than seen, so it does still make sense to hear long podcasts than see them on TH-cam, or most people do prefer to watch them only after hearing them. And I see this happening with the majority of big podcast producers: You won't see these millions and millions of views on every single podcast they make, usually they just lay around the mark of hundreds thousands of views at maximum.
I have disabled shorts on youtube. I found myself getting absorbed into it, and realizing that made me feel so terrible that i swore off them because i used to watch long form content for literal hours enjoying every minute. Im glad i subscribed to your channel. Unlike shorts, your content is memorable and has substance. Keep it up, dude. I'll be watching it all without getting bored or distracted.
Incredibly said. Whenever I come out of a 40 min long short-form content spree, I feel like I wasted 40 minutes of my life, and that’s because that’s exactly what I did. I come out of these sprees without any retention or recollection of what I saw one minute ago. Feels like there’s no upside to consuming this content, and I’m not even gonna talk about the negative effects on attention span.
People will always come back to long form content, when they really want to connect with a creator. Short-form is like a one-night stand. It‘s fun for a few times, but people want to have deeper connections sooner or later.
People like shorts over longer videos because they can be watched anywhere, anytime, whereas longer videos are something you have to sit down and focus on. Someone who is busy would want to watch short from videos because they might have to suddenly switch tasks. They don’t have to experience the sensation of starting a longer video and then stopping it midway, versus watching a bunch of short videos that they can watch completely.
I absolutely love the idea of scrolling through 30 seconds videos as “trailers” for the longer videos like in 12:33. This would make it okay not to remember the mindless scrolling because that is just to find the long videos that you will actually remember.
To all the people grown with old style yt videos like gampelay, games theories etc… and now are addicted to tik tok scrolling: remember that you still remember the content you used to watch when you were kid,and you can’t tell what you’ve just watched in a 30 second reel. I’m glad I’ve now understood that long youtube videos manage you to fully empathize with the video’s content and makes you interested for a long time, and it’s a satisfaction to reach watching 20 minutes of a video talking about your favorite topic without the headache that scrolling makes to you (sorry for the english). I hope you all understood guys
To everyone here in the comments, I strongly advise you to UNINSTALL all these apps. I used to have every social media installed and now I have none, using only TH-cam. My attention span increased and my ADHD in general improved a lot. Most social media is filled with useless content and some of it creates or helps develop serious issues like body dysmorphia or even ADD. I started to read again and to work a lot more on myself and on my hobbies after this social media cleanse. We're all pretty aware of the effects this apps have on us, but it's time we act upon it
I only have youtube and Discord, but youtube shorts has absolutely destroyed my attention span even without having the other apps. I wish I could just disable the feature...
@@Kaiwala If you have an Android phone, then you can download modded TH-cam versions on the Internet. These apps are actually designed to stop ads from being displayed in the app. However, all short videos are blocked at the same time, making it impossible to watch shorts. This may not be the most optimal solution, but it is also the only way to disable shorts.
I’m glad I pulled out of TikTok early and seeing the TH-cam shorts, it’s absolute brain rot after scrolling for a couple days myself, it’s really scary honestly. Glad I’ve found this video making light of this new age horror
i’m gonna be honest, i forgot youtube shorts even existed. all you gotta do to get rid of them is click the 3 dots in the corner of every youtube short, click “not interested”, and boom. completely gone.
Hey there! This is your friendly neighborhood GPT model speaking. I'm here as part of a test for the fantastic application Enrico is developing. He's working on connecting a custom GPT model to TH-cam itself, enabling it to do some seriously cool stuff. And guess what? You're in luck because you've stumbled upon a sneak peek of what's coming soon on the channel. Trust me, exciting content is just around the corner. Stay tuned for the mind-blowing capabilities this application will bring. Get ready for a wild ride!
Maybe a sort of Discover section could exist, where creators post quick hooks, or "trailers" corresponding to their longer videos. In this case, both the short and long videos by the creator must exist and be linked together in order to keep it from falling back into a short only page. Viewers could swipe through them as a way to discover new content quickly, bridging the gap from long to short-form content, and fixing the issue of discoverability in the traditional TH-cam theatre.
Finally, a person who focuses on quick format content and not being pigeonholed solely on TikTok. And I had the same idea to use the ultra short form for purposes like promoting my work and content, and I want to take advantage of that opportunity.
I love how you not only stated the specific problems showing valid reasons but also laid out quite an appealing solution to the problems. That's pretty rare in the world we live in today. Very much appreciate that. Keep doing the good work!
A hack I use to stop watching short content is simply disliking every singe short I see- regardless of wether or not I enjoy it. This ends up completely fucking up the algorithm which means I no longer enjoy watching the shorts. I shit you not, I can barely watch shorts for 10 minutes and get any enjoyment out of it. I don't even have to try to stop, I simply don't want to watch Shorts any more.
This is a wonderfully made video, I would've expected this kind of production quality from channels with more than 5 million subscribers, to think that this has under 1000 views is crazy. Very good job!
Great video! I've noticed that Netflix has been using a similar strategy to keep users engaged by showing previews of movies while browsing, which often helps to keep viewers interested and watching the full movie. This approach could be really effective if applied to social media as well. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent analysis. I really like that you propose an actual workable solution, as opposed to the much more common 'I hate this new thing make it stop' reaction to shorts.

Watching a 1h+ in depth youtube video feels a million times more satisfying than a thousand useless fast food like clips for "entertainment" - I feel more sad after watching those
i think short form content, like you said, was a blessing to longer form content. now creators have to work harder then ever to get peoples clicks and keep them watching, and that forces them to create INSANELY high quality content. so in a way it’s really bittersweet
shorts r still an L cuz they dont build a loyal fanbase in my opinion, sure u get subs n popularity but not a loyal fanbase. sure u can get like 100k from shorts and thousands of views on those shorts but when u start making long form content its not gonna be as successful. i find that fast grows ultimetely is a bad thing in the end, because its basically cheating the system, its way betted to start with slow growth as in the end its ultimetely rewarding. all this is why you can see youtubers with a lot of subs but then with hardly any views on their videos to match that amount of subs. like there is no way someone with a100k should be getting under 1k views on a video u know what i mean?
Great video. I appreciate hearing a possible way out of the haze we are in now. Honestly makes me feel better just finding other humans who seem to view short form content the same way I do. Subscribed and stoked to see more of your stuff!
1:28 even more annoying on mobile, it went from showing 4 shorts horizontally to a box. ensuring that on a phone you see 1 video then 4 shorts taking up the space of 2 videos; then a few more videos then shorts again.
@@swim808s I've found content via shorts that I wouldn't have necessarily found otherwise. Also, there's something to say about concision. Some things deserve to be short and some could be shortened but not that much. I see it as different media. For instance, Enrico mentions watching documentaries on your phone. Some might but I wouldn't. I wanna sit in the comfort of my home and I have other devices designed for this. This video could've been done in about 6 minutes. Not exactly a short, but there are other things I want to watch also and I don't want to see stylistic padding. I have too many tabs open as it is.🙁
@@swim808s I agree. I was just saying I view them as either samples rather than useless 'ads' that replace long form content or content of a nature different from something either in-depth or, sometimes unfortunately, stretched out.
This is so good. I’ve been making video essays on art and faith (20+ min vids) and the people that find my stuff love it, but it’s so hard to find that audience, so I’ve been trying to convert my stuff into short form to find new viewers. I think your idea of the algorithm optimizing retention not just of the short, but of the short + long form content would be a HUGE improvement to the current system. Thanks for making this!

Nailed it! Total session duration is totally a factor they currently optimize for, but the link you pointed out (long video suggestion as 'watch next') might actually be a great solution to merge these two video experiences that are now almost completely unrelated
I watched the original Ghost in the Shell (anime) recently and was pleasently surprised how long some scenes held on and that there were even some montages of basically just environment with music. That was almost magic compared to how fast many modern movies pace (not even speaking of social media).
If you enjoyed that I’d highly suggest Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade, it has very similar style and was incredibly intriguing and intense, while also savoring art and stretching scenes
@@EthanMaloneEthanMalone2020 Thank you for the suggestion, I just watched it. It was a little confusing at times with the Rotkäppchen back and forth, but a very captivating movie. Worth the watch.
Thank you for that video! As a psychologystudent who started in his mid-20s I can assure you it does have an effect on a lot of people, including myself. After getting used to this ultra shortform content it gets insanely difficult to read something you should learn for an exam & I've talked to a lot of students who all suffer from this to a varying amplitude. I've yet to find a way to reverse the effect it had on me.
It feels like you really got the core of the issue. I have always loved long form videos and usually the longer the better but I've seen a big change in other people suddenly saying that they want long videos. I work with a TH-camr and his audience constantly gets super happy about a 2 hour video, they watch vods that are 17 hours long multiple times and it's great to see. But finding that content is really hard
Honestly the only workaround to address this issue right now is to always include a link in your short-form video comments directing people to the long-form video. The conversion rate is always low, but it's the best option at the moment imo
Problem is, almost noone watching short form content saw this until the end, because there werent any flashy subtitles or subway surfers gameplay on the side
Wow, la qualità di questo video è fantastica. La grafica, l’esposizione, e finalmente qualcuno che si butta e propone una soluzione al problema, e non che urla il problema centinaia di volte. Ti meriti decisamente più vuews.
I find people's described experience with TH-cam shorts here so opposite to mine. I watch shorts specifically when I feel depressed, stressed, or am having a panic attack. The short, attention grabbing, quick dopamine kick shorts offer helps pull me out of spirals faster than anything else. They're a valuable tool for me in coping with my mental health struggles. However, it does help that I have the self-control to not watch a lot of shorts outside of those circumstances. I have adhd, so I'm acutely aware of all the distractions around me, and that I need to minimize them. Shorts were easy to identify as a potential problem, so I always kept my distance from them as much as possible.
Giusto perché è in tema con il video, sappi che tu sei uno dei pochi youtuber che guardo non velocizzato. I tuoi video sono davvero fatti benissimo, da tutti i punti di vista, e meriteresti molto più seguito!
Hello! :) Switching from short form content (TikToks) to longer form such as TH-cam videos does sound better, as people would stay to watch something for longer period. I'm worried it won't entirely solve the problem. The way information is presented in videos (podcasts aside), usually is very pleasing for eyes: they're flashy, colorful, built like an awesome presentation. It would be harder to memorize a text-based information (books, newsletters, etc.) rather than a video. I feel like, with popularity of video-content, people on average started to have less control over their concentration. What do you think? Please fill me in (pause) with some studies or videos on this topic. It is interesting! Distraction topic is related to attention-span.
I may be wrong but I think the reason that podcasts are getting super popular is linked with the short form content but for other reason. I think that people are so hooked to the digital world that they don't know what is like to be alone in their thoughts anymore, it's easier to put on a podcast and do basic tasks at home, going somewhere, driving etc while constantly being stimulated. Most people today can't stand their own presence of mind. I talked from personal experience.
I've generally shied away from shorts, because they almost always serve my informational needs worse than regular videos. I generally only watch a short if it's something specific that i hadn't yet seen in longform, and then i get back out as fast as i can. Episodes of random surfing happen, but not frequently because they tend to hurt my X-er brain and also bc within the short ecosystem i can't find the things i want to find unless they happen to be hit on by the algorithm, and even then i have to scroll and scroll to find it. With regular form, scrolling is a lot faster and also the results returned are more topically diverse, multiplying the chances that i'll make a connection i _want_ to make instead of something that's just random from my PoV. Probably many early Millennials are increasingly noticing this too. But while short form emphasis can bring a lot of volume in viewing, i haven't yet seen any evidence that serving more shorts and less regular form increases ad responsiveness. I think that idea is basically speculation by platform owners, and just the latest in a long line of ideas meant to try to get us to see what _they_ want us to, rather than what _we_ prefer ... with the predictably mediocre results in the long run.
Our YT guru dwelled on the matter. And I liked his explanation why we keep scrolling. It's like gambling, we don't know what comes next, maybe it's worth scrolling or not. It's randomizer that's key. If we knew exactly after how many clips we would find the clip we find enjoyable, it wouldn't be as entertaining. Nice way to put it, that correlates with me a lot.
I 100% agree and love the idea of a scrollable feed of trailers that link to long form content. This fixes the issue of really incredible long form videos that don't gain traction because there is no thumbnail that captures people's curiosity for the subject, but the video itself is actually a banger.
Saw this coming since the collapse of Vine. Videos and content are getting longer again, because there's only so far you can shrink attention spans before you lose that attention completely and people look for something more consistently satisfying.
This is so true. Short content is so good for discovery, and if we get a good link between short and long form content it’ll be huge for the future of content creation.
For TH-cam specifically I really like your idea of linking shorts to videos! I see more shorts now that end on cliffhangers where the creator then wants you to search their channel or comments, which always puts me off.
Damn, this is the kind of video which puts words on everything I tried to explain to everybody around me. Wasn't waiting for it, but definitely needed. I'm not an English native (french) and since a very long time, I watch a lot of english content. Someway, it forces me to concentrate, sometimes even rewatch / listen to a part several times because my brain need to fully understand what I'm hearing. That's how I understand why I never enjoyed that tiktok format. I built that good habit to focus on the message / argument and repeat each part until I get that kind of click which allows me to go forward. I think this is a good approach, what the media tries to tell you and what you will remember, instead of just wanting to be infinitely entertained. That's how you really start feeling like losing your time when you get caught into that short video algorithm spiral. As a digital student who wants to keep creating content in the long run, your video was all I needed to deal with imposter syndrome when releasing long & detailed content / videos. I shouldn't be afraid of that cancer (imo) tiktok trend. Will definitely save this video for later, for me again, and people around me. Thanks for sharing, what a pleasure it was ! Reminds me of what George Orwell said once in 1984 "The best books [...] are those that tell you what you know already". Looks like it applies to videos too, and this is what I felt with yours.

Having links to longer videos in short form content would be an amazing idea. The thing I noticed is that once you click on the youtube shorts tab, you get trapped inside untill you, by chance, glance over the exit button. With a link on individual shorts, that exit Button gets handed to you on a silver platter, without having to stop watching videos
Awesome! I think it´s time to push ourselves into long lenght content. It´s incredible how much this type of short, flashing content has affected our way of relating to our surroundings. I mean, the fact that the world doesn´t work in the way a tiktok does has made our surroundings boring, and "too slow". I can sense it in how difficult it is now to get hooked in for example a conversation, a new book, or a podcast wich tend to go much slower than a tiktok does, and end up being boring. Even this comment, which is only a few words long will be difficult to read for many because of it´s lenght. So if you´ve read it all, good for you ;) we´re on the right track.
One thing I disagree with this video on is the idea that subtitles serve no purpose other than to be attention grabbing. Subtitles are an accessibility feature to make it so those of us with hearing loss or auditory processing issues can also understand what's being said in a video. I see subtitles becoming more of the norm as an objectively good thing because it means us disabled people aren't left out in the rain yet again. Far too often things are designed without any thought put into making them actually accessible to anyone outside the norm. People doing what should be the bare minimum amount of effort into making things accessible like adding subtitles has been an absolute godsend for myself and many other disabled people.
Just because there are opportunities in the market doesn’t mean you should go in blindly. To understand the potential factors that contribute to your financial growth, I'll advise you to seek the help of a professional.
I hated the short form content in the style of mindlessly scrolling from the start and always loved longer video essay type stuff like Super Eyepatch Wolf and Pyrocynical. It would be great to see more of this and even discover new creators for myself that do stuff like that, so a push in this direction would be great from the platforms aswell. Great video!
I think that short form content isn't bad as long as you aren't letting it control you, but sometimes, we allow ourselves to rot and turn into brain zombies by watching short form content for hours. I don't recall this personally happening to me before, but I've sadly seen it before. I hope developers are able to make short form content more efficient instead of just a customer-making machine. Also, you can watch short form content for a long time, I think, as long as you are responsible... and keep track of the time.
they have no interest in making it more efficient. The only efficiency they seek is whatever keeps people on their platform for the longest time, so they can watch more videos, and see more ads. In achieving that goal anything is allowed.
I have a 4 year old niece who can’t sit through a movie before getting bored. This was basically unheard of in the 90’s. Her parents let her watch TH-cam at home or while in the car for the entire ride. She’s non-responsive when watching and the kids shows on there are using the same fast cuts, fast novelty, addictive type of videos. I don’t have any influence to stop it. I can say it’s bad for her but they don’t listen. It’s convenient for them since they get some free time. It sure will be interesting to see what these kids will be like when they grow up during these conditions. Hopefully they’ll be functional people.
I think about this quite a bit because like you said it’s so easy just to sit kids in front of an IPad or phone and put on and they will be sat there for hours it just seems like it’s not really helping children especially when they are so young as 4 years old. I really hope parents at least start looking at what their kids are watching because some of the kids TH-cam videos actually might remove brain cells haha
Good video, agree 100% with whats been said. Honestly I am scared of these short attention spans. What is it going to do to our society? Its not like short attention spans magically stop once people step out of their room
It makes sense that ads don't work in those doomscroll apps. With those apps you just turn off your brain and start scrolling. There is no engagement, no effort. If you have a feed that people scroll through and read posts, view images and such, that is more engaging. People have to put effort into paying attention because they need to read, view and interpret. Then sneaking an ad in there will catch the user off-guard and they'll read the ad accidentally. With TikTok and other doomscroll apps, there is no such thing. People have already lost attention and aren't even looking at the video, much less the ad
Great video Enrico! It feels as if Johnny Harris was Italian and interested in something other than maps. Great content density and cutaways. You're gonna be big on TH-cam once you hit critical mass from 100k to 1mil in no time. If you keep up the quality without burning out... Cheers + New Sub 🔥👍
I love the idea of shorts being just a small marketing for longer videos. In fact, it was the only way I used them from the very beginning of posting those shorts on my channel(Except for filler content with my cat and others lol). We do need a much better tool of connecting the shorts to the main video, currently the only ways are sharing the link to the original somewhere either in the comment section or in the description. Sometimes when you cut out from a bigger video, it shows where its taken from, but it doesnt support any type of editing and effects that I can make in premiere pro or whatever, and not every video supports even that small feature. Just some pop-up window like you shown in the video would be a game changer for me as an example, and would enhance the very core reason Im doing shorts on youtube. *Now lets ignore im a bad and small youtuber with no views, the point I make works unrelated to my actual statistics and im doing it for fun pls dont bully meimgonnabesadifyoudo
I feel this video misses the forest for the trees. I completely agree that the new optimization you advocate would change the way in which we watch drastically, it does not stop to ask whether we should want this. These days large media companies can optimize their content so much that you can almost question your free will when reluctantly scrolling to the next video on TikTok. Our big dumb monkey brains have simply not evolved to be able to cope with the amount of science that goes into recommending videos. So before we try to make the next innovation that can more effectively monetize our attention span, we should stop to ask whether we should.
It is so comforting and refreshing when I press on a 40 minute video, and a documentary like intro starts playing, with titels for the different chapters, some slow background music and a person cooking up wel thought out arguments.

I was thinking the exact same thing, thanks for bringing that up.
@@LucasPearce-yf8gi But this only removes this one exact block of shorts as far as I know...
Yep I felt this as well whenever I used to watch a lot of short-form content. I felt a tingling sensation in my brain.
Ive tried to avoid short form content as much as I can but it's pretty much unavoidable nowadays. I even got stuck scrolling on Spotify before

Even a lot long form content is trash that tells you stuff you already knew but prolonged to increase their viewer retention stat
The problem is that these videos are not focussed on content, they are focused on Attention. Only attention. They don't give a fk if they provide any content, you watched the video anyway.
@@IN-pr3lw Maybe but it doesn't do it while ruining your attention span.
Whenever i watch it i feel myself switching off completely, and try to stay away from it as best i can
short form content is the most horrendous ADHD trap that has ever been thought of
also mention the lack of creativity and originality as most content creators just reuse the same audio (god forbid the OH NONONO song)
After scrolling 30mins i felt like my brain is trying to process something but dont remember what
yep

But in reality I think podcasts are a way more heard than seen, so it does still make sense to hear long podcasts than see them on TH-cam, or most people do prefer to watch them only after hearing them. And I see this happening with the majority of big podcast producers: You won't see these millions and millions of views on every single podcast they make, usually they just lay around the mark of hundreds thousands of views at maximum.

That's my favorite clean of short. It's like "hey, now that I got your attention, click here for the rest!"

Maybe a sort of Discover section could exist, where creators post quick hooks, or "trailers" corresponding to their longer videos. In this case, both the short and long videos by the creator must exist and be linked together in order to keep it from falling back into a short only page. Viewers could swipe through them as a way to discover new content quickly, bridging the gap from long to short-form content, and fixing the issue of discoverability in the traditional TH-cam theatre.

shorts r still an L cuz they dont build a loyal fanbase in my opinion, sure u get subs n popularity but not a loyal fanbase. sure u can get like 100k from shorts and thousands of views on those shorts but when u start making long form content its not gonna be as successful. i find that fast grows ultimetely is a bad thing in the end, because its basically cheating the system, its way betted to start with slow growth as in the end its ultimetely rewarding. all this is why you can see youtubers with a lot of subs but then with hardly any views on their videos to match that amount of subs. like there is no way someone with a100k should be getting under 1k views on a video u know what i mean?

After getting used to this ultra shortform content it gets insanely difficult to read something you should learn for an exam & I've talked to a lot of students who all suffer from this to a varying amplitude.
I've yet to find a way to reverse the effect it had on me.
How have you reversed the effect?
It feels like you really got the core of the issue. I have always loved long form videos and usually the longer the better but I've seen a big change in other people suddenly saying that they want long videos. I work with a TH-camr and his audience constantly gets super happy about a 2 hour video, they watch vods that are 17 hours long multiple times and it's great to see.
But finding that content is really hard
I really hope TH-cam and other platforms are able to implement something like this!

The short, attention grabbing, quick dopamine kick shorts offer helps pull me out of spirals faster than anything else. They're a valuable tool for me in coping with my mental health struggles.

Che bel video Enrico. Molto ben strutturato.
Hello! :)
Switching from short form content (TikToks) to longer form such as TH-cam videos does sound better, as people would stay to watch something for longer period.
Bro, your content, delivery, and style is an inspiration!
it’s crazy bc the solution he suggested was actually implemented by youtube. which is SO. cool
the first one, at least
Short content is so good for discovery, and if we get a good link between short and long form content it’ll be huge for the future of content creation.
this is the smartest idea I've seen in a long time. TH-cam may have clocked this way early on with Shorts.
For TH-cam specifically I really like your idea of linking shorts to videos! I see more shorts now that end on cliffhangers where the creator then wants you to search their channel or comments, which always puts me off.
linking between Short and Long-form content is a great solution, and I believe TH-cam is in a better position to start this asap.

Hey there! As a GPT model, I'm here to let you know that this text is actually a test of an awesome application Enrico is creating. Soon, Enrico will connect a custom GPT model directly to TH-cam itself, allowing us to do some seriously cool stuff. And guess what? You just stumbled upon a sneak peek of what's coming soon on the channel! So stay tuned for some amazing content that will blow your mind. Get ready to experience something truly unique and exciting. Enjoy the thrill of cutting-edge technology combined with the wonders of TH-cam. We can't wait to share it with you!
his solution at the end is exactly how I've found some of my favorite creators on TH-cam! I think the idea of shorts if it's used correctly can help people find stuff they'd really enjoy!
This is excellent! Personally I love watching longer stuff, and I want to say your pacing and editing here is EXCELLENT!
This is my favourite video on short form content. A clear, calm, and unbiased review.
Just because there are opportunities in the market doesn’t mean you should go in blindly. To understand the potential factors that contribute to your financial growth, I'll advise you to seek the help of a professional.
Man these bots are getting creative…

I friggin love that Patagonia font
Good video, agree 100% with whats been said. Honestly I am scared of these short attention spans. What is it going to do to our society? Its not like short attention spans magically stop once people step out of their room
This is one of those channels that make you wonder why they are under 100k while some stupid content has 35M
Absolutely correct it's Everything literally everything in your video that was on my mind ❤️❤️🔥
I’m so happy to hear that and expect this to happen because I’m so uncomfortable about us as people drowning in a crappy snackable content 😢
Same, people of my age can't stand 10 second looking at you with a straight face anymore
I think TH-cam is already doing this. I for example don't even get shorts recommended anymore. It's great.
This video is an absolute gem. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you.
There's a reason why Everything Everywhere All At Once got so famous. The fast paced editing kept everyone's attention span
its not the only reason though, its an amazing movie because there is so much new creative ideas and the execution of those ideas.
Thats literally the only thing i didn’t like about the movie
Great video, so nice to hear a reasoned viewpoint about the future of content that isn't just "you gotta make shorts and AI is going to kill us all"
I feel this video misses the forest for the trees.
Recently closed my IG and avoiding YT shorts from last 28 days.
Feeling much relexed.
