Harsh, strident in places, very- the tuning of the first violin- but great verve and esprit, and in gentler moments some lovely synergy, deserved by so audacious, bold and accomplished a piece of lovely melody, contrast in pace, phrase, tone and mood.

See where the mic is set up? See where the performers you reference as being louder are? Duh? It's called imaging. Sound quality is very good for TH-cam imo.

Ok, I have read a lot of negativity about the sound. I do agree the sound is off. I tend to believe it's the recording and not the musicians. I will add that this is the only TH-cam recording of this that I have listened to. I have always listened to it via vinyl record on a quality record player in a small room. In those conditions; this song is completely euphoric. I don't think that if didn't have that as my mental template, that I would enjoy this song so much. We are listening to a recording that is then transmitted through a personal computer. Many things are lost and distorted.. If you wish to have a quality experience, go listen to this performed live or at least listen to it on a vinyl record played on a quality record player. Having said that...this piece is magnificent, the structure, communication amongst the instruments and spirit. And, check out the vigor of that cellist on the far right! Excellent!

Just heard it live two days ago in Seattle's grand symphony hall. The sound quality was perfect.
10:06 Nerdy question - last high note of 1st mvt, 1st Violin: I've heard this done with a super-high Eb as here, and also as written lower octave. I prefer this version, what about other people??

It seems that there are as many faults with this performance than positives. Let's balance a few things. The bad things: the venue appears to not favor string instruments. The mic's were placed right where the 1st violin & 2nd cello would dominate. And the overall sound quality was what could be called "harsh." The positives: Unless the listener knew the music and could really nit-pick, the performance was stellar. Having heard at least 3 other ensembles perform this work, I would still give this an A or A-. My only gripe was I could barely hear the violas.

First Violin part could use SOME refinement, pitches became very weary towards the end and sound very "hollow". Can't hear the 2nd Violin very, Cello part however was very distinct and exact and approached the piece the the right style.

First rule of performance, if an article of some sort falls (here, some sheet music), pick it up immediately or the audience will be distracted and focus on that dropped article for the whole performance. 😬
Cellist is too loud at the end of the first movement, otherwise very good.

Endpin got camourflaged by his shoes and socks. A floating cello.
So every composer made an excuse to not use the double bass? That's just sad.
This is very pitchy that or the recording equipment isn't very good. I agree the first violin sounds very hollow and I feel like I can't hear the 2nd part which is just as important as the first. Very slow tempo and lacked energy...
deliusism1 good anaylysis--doesn't sound balanced--first violin dominates--which is counter to rules of chamber music. still, to be able to hear this in any form is a treat.
Joseph Lloyd The tempo is fine for the most part except in a few places (like around the beginning of the 1St mvmt., there's a section before the melody is played a second time by the 1St violin that drastically drops in tempo. And the last con fuoco section played had stops that were too long) and the 2ND mvmt... The players seemed to look like they were having fun... at least some of them.
Overall, it shows their own musicality and perspective on the music.
Whoa... after listening to such a great piece played beautifully... then the second cello starts the last movement like THAT???!!! Unreal... Could he just not jump in as every other cellist in the world in the history of this piece has done with the same note value and speed?? Did he think he was being artistic by playing the first two 16ths so slowly?? Fail, whatever his reasoning... really bad idea. Enjoyed the rest of his playing but that I won't get over. Yeah, I know, just 2 notes... but it's THE LAST MVT OF A GREAT PIECE! Shameful, really.
