Mixing and applying EPOXY primer/sealer on the 1985 Fiero GT

  • Today we're mixing and applying epoxy primer/sealer on the 1985 Fiero GT. Epoxy primer/sealer should be used anytime there is mixed surfaces (primer, paint, metal). It's the perfect product as a final sealer before you paint. Since the Fiero has different surfaces, we need to seal it with epoxy before we paint it ✅

Been a automotive painter for a while, and only painted a whole vehicle twice, a couple of decades ago. Watching you mix, the smells fill my head. Compliments on your economics. Why do those mixing cup cost a small fortune? Stripping down an 80 Pace Car because all those decal checked. Thanks for the refresher course.

age doesn't mean anything , you could be here for another 20-30 years now is the best time to get a project and work on it over a few years . maybe teach the kids/ grandkids about stuff if you have any. if not then get some old buddies over and have a beer with them and have fun messing about with the car/ truck. life should never be a bore

@@SamFBM i’m 74 and am working on mu last custom; all done by me. The idle mind thought up another one and I went to the Junior College offering to bankroll the new idea. They agreed and now I spend hours a week supervising work on “my” “last” car. Hmmm, I wonder what a full tilt boogie off road 4WD Subue topless AMC Pacer would look like?

I have always promotes disassembly for painting a color change so that all the channels and jambs are consistent. For color flash paints I reassemble for the final color and coats for best uniform flash across the length and width of the car. Then arduously polish the cambs and channels.

Hi thank you for th video. Very informative. I bought a 1973 Opel gt with it spray painted with rhino truck liner. I'm very slowly taking off all of it with a grinder but I thought rustoleum would keep it from rusting while continuing to remove the rest of the liner. It didn't so I'll need to get off all the rust and use normal primer then strip it all off again after all the liner is off so I could properly epoxy primer the car. I wish there is another way but atleast you showed me a way to primer and paint without sanding. Thank you.

Good call on the epoxy. Exactly what I would do. Will cut it with 1200 grit before I paint to take off any nibs. And you're right about the epoxy piece rusting before the primed piece. Keep it going. Stevo J

Nice work Brad! And especially J on the camera! Wonder if you could include some comments on the spray gun tip size you are using ! The pattern on this job looks wide! I have had some issues with G2 primer as it is very thick and the spray pattern is pretty narrow! Had me scratching my head but watchin you get her done helped! You do great work and the fact that you share your work has got to be a Maratime thing! Thx !

I believe those guns are 1.3. Spray at a higher pressure and widen the fan to reduce orange peel. If needed lower the amount of material. For use as a sealer most manufacturers suggest reducing the sealer before spraying.

A great help watching this video. Question... I sprayed Nason 2k epoxy primer on a tank and it came out looking like a raptor paint job. Very grainy.
I tried different guns , different gun pressures and all came out the same. Only difference to your mixing was I added thinners at recommended quantity. Any suggestions ?

I like the video. It's a shame you weren't able to show the Epoxy V 2K Urethane Primer. In ships/boats/offshore rigs Etc. Epoxy primers are used as barrier coats because they block moisture due to their molecular structure. Rust needs Oxygen and Moisture. Are automotive epoxies somehow different?

Usually, you want to use the same size tip for sealer as you do for base coat. You want it as flat as possible. Also, don't use the in gun strainer. Use quality strainers as you fill the cup.

Wet on wet bonds like the dickens. Nason doesn't have as much pigment in it which is why it is a must for an even color base PRIOR to any color.
I have shot the same color in NASON and in CHROMA PREMIER and the coverage with one coat is WAY better with Chroma Premier.
