I’ve never commented on you not using a mask. I worked my entire career not using a mask. I smoked for over 45 years, worked with asbestos ( when we didn’t know the damage it could do) and worked with some really nasty chemicals, all without a mask. I’m 65 haven’t smoked in just over four years. Quit first time I tried. I used the patch but that’s another story. My lungs are darker than a tire and I’m sure that the smoking had plenty to do with that but they may not have been as bad had I wore a mask more often. I have trouble walking a flight of stairs now days , please use a mask, any mask is better than no mask. I felt fine right up til I was about 59/60 then it started. Get ahead of it Chad please. Jolene if your the one that reads these comments please encourage him to wear one. Thanks😷👍🇨🇦
20 years ago I was cutting. Plywood with no mask got a lung infection took two Months to go away, but for the last 20 years I cough every morning for a half an hour and anytime I eat just one time without a mask thanks

I couldn't agree more a very good friend who was a body and painter who owned a restoration shop. Every Sunday we would talk about what to do next with our business his wife said he's had stomach pain und wouldn't go to hospital RIP Dave Roberts he passed away 4 months later from lung infection cancer He was stubborn just like Bad Chad and sometimes other people don't know better end up being taught bad habits. I have pictures of me in my teens sandblasting and painting with a painters mask. We know so much now about how dangerous the dust and fumes are to us. Gotta mask up.
I really like the way you show how a “normal person” in his garage can do things without a bunch of high dollar machines and tools. Second. Epoxy primer seals bare metal moisture won’t get under it. That’s why it’s used. You can prime it with epoxy primer and do your filler on top of it. Nothing wrong with starting with high build it works too but epoxy just goes one step further.

You can't put fill on top of epoxy. It goes on the metal first then epoxy

I've been following the Bugatti build and everything in between since the first episode. I really appreciate how we have learned a little bit about how you have gotten to where you are now. Chad, we can see that your positive attitude and happiness hasn't always been part of your every day life. I enjoy hearing about your life lessons along the way and how you have overcome some of the shit that life throws at many of us. You've taught us how you've learned to create some really amazing builds with limited funds. I am truly thankful for that, and I think that alot of the community here following you would agree that you have shown us how anyone can do just the same without all the fancy expensive tooling and materials. You often find controversy in alot of the comments but the facts are in the quality finished product. As a fellow Canadian I am thankful that you have opened my eyes to alot of techniques that will straight up save me time and money, I'm inspired by you and this channel, keep the great content coming! And Jolene! It's so very obvious that Chad would not be the same person without you in the equation, you guys rock! I have 2 young boys who have also started to ask daddy to put "bat chat" on the TV, I am thankful they can watch something with me that I enjoy and also get to see a great example of another man being respectful with his partner, something that is hard too find in mainstream TV today. I agree on pumping the brakes, that's how I drive also. It keeps your brakes cooler.
You owe no one an explanation on how you do your job. You know what works for you. I do the same painting motorcycles, an have never had an issue. Thanks for another great video Chad & Jolene. There are a lot of people on here that love your style.
It also lets your passengers know you are planning on slowing down and they will be a much more comfortable passengers.
Sometimes my wife is coming up on a red light and is still accelerating when the light is not close to turning green. We buy lots of brakes.

I’ve watched tons of your videos. Getting ready to do my ghia in honor of my grandfather who collected cars and just passed. Thank you for this information. You’re helping families heal and honor loved ones.
ABS brakes are not installed for any kind of economy. They are to keep the wheels from locking up or skidding on slick surfaces and or panic stops. Brakes are most efficient at the moment just before lock up (skidding). ABS systems pump the brakes to keep them in that narrow power band of braking efficiency. ABS is never activated during normal driving conditions. They are activated by the wheel speed sensors & computer detecting millisecond differences in individual wheel speeds, outside of programmed parameters. Example: sensors detect rear wheels going 30mph and a front wheel is only going 5 mph (ABS calculates the front wheel(s) must be skidding or close to it). Additionally, if your front wheels are locked up, you can't steer.
This is why any description of ABS usage for economy and the comparison to automotive coatings is kind of a stretch. My comments are meant to be constructive. I enjoy your videos and respect your work ethic.

ABS was created for economic reasons.. The big business of Insurance..
@@k.taylor262 Surely the "BB of I " is a beneficiary of ABS tech, but so are people in general.
ABS dramatically decreases stopping distances on slick surfaces and panic stops. I think Chad's original context of ABS saving money on brake pads is uninformed however.
@@k.taylor262 I'm a licensed aircraft tech/ A&P ,ABS is one of the subjects I had to learn about, over decade before cars had them and was tested on by the FAA before Listening; I agree with Mr.Trucks explanation and I would like to add a bit to it. ABS was developed during WWII for military aircraft, and the systems they used were literally 100 times bigger and heavier than our current technology and their cost were way out of the automotive buyers budget then, it took over 75 years for ABS to be implemented on modern vehicles, it took time for our micro-chip technology to make it possible and cost effective. The system has no bearing or coloration to the subject matter/epoxies Chad was trying to explain.
Chad is a great talent in the subject of body repairs and body-mods, but from this video and others I've noticed that when it comes to the drive-train and powerplants/ like we call them in the aviation i.e. engines on vehicle/cars from the past and today Chad has a lot to learn.
My insurance company gives me a discount off my premium for having ABS, I think that's a plus, a great economic reason for my pocket and not the insurance company given me the discounted rate.
Stick to body work and teaching us how to repair that portion of automobiles, leave the " Powerplant" issues to Jim and Doug, they got it covered to an extend/ LOL

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I’ve been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out the whole epoxy polyester deal. I’m not a paint guy but I am in the middle of prepping my old Camaro that I’ve had for 40 years because I can’t afford to have someone else to do it so this helped me out. For me it is nice to see you just fabricate as you do. I learn from you a bit on my build and relate what i can. I do this for a hobby and you make some of these steps look super easy. Well that was the strangest explanation of why we use epoxy. Its applied over clean or sandblasted metal How he did it will stick no doubt .however i believe its about longevity. So PEROXIDE will rust steel quickly. 1st ingredient in the liquid hardener and the filler hardener is PEROXIDE. Thats why rust will form under filler. Epoxy is a great barrier
There's no place for chemistry in a body shop. It's obvious the paint manufacturers have no idea what they're doing. I bet you're one of those guys who actually uses the mixing ratio marks on the side of the cups instead of just splashing an eyeballs worth of hardener in there. Pretty soon you'll be telling us to follow the recommended flash and re-coat times too.
The Peroxide is reacting with compounds in the feather fill primer. Mixed properly, there’s no excess peroxide lying there on the metal once the hardener does its job.
I agree with you. These people that make this product know more about their product than we do. This is not a race when you SKIP PROCESSES when they say to do this this way .You need to follow directions. There is no need in raising your voice just because you think your right and every one else is wrong. Your pissed because someone called you out. This will be the last time I watch your show or videos. Thank you, have a nice day. And learn to read. Also next time you sand a car you might want to wear a mask so you might live longer. People look up to you. Be an example.
Want to put in my 2 cents on this and see if anyone agrees. Product liability is a deep subject. Most product descriptions and product warranties are worded so that in the event of a so called product failure the manufacturer always has a way to get away from being held liable because of misuse. Been there, done it. It's never their fault. You have to use products that you are familiar with and know what methods work. To each his own..
@@JohnBrown-rx8ix Yes I agree. I was just saying that they developed their product, so therefore they know what it will do under different processes. So why not go ahead and epoxy prime before primer/sealer. So I take it that he will not seal either. Ronnie.

I am up in the air here. I went to auto body school in the 90s. I was told epoxy primer over bare metal then primer surfacer over the epoxy. Was also told epoxy primer over the dent/repair then the bondo then epoxy over the bondo. Epoxy seals out moisture.
Chad, you explained it well. There are different ways to do it and you share the way you do it with all of us which I comend. I think others have a good way too because there are different epoxy paints which folks are talking about. Epoxy is a moisture seal like your fiberglass filler does for you.

I wanna say thank you for this one video! I've been waiting for it. I have been doing my own body work and paint on my own projects and was told I had to apoxy prime mine due to being in bare metal. I sanded mine 40-80 grit as well. I too now will go to primer with confidence watching this one channel!

You are kinda explaining what I told my daughter last month. The whole world has assisted in laziness ie. Self braking cars GPS assistance dtm dtam primers high build epoxy etc. Glad I'm not the only one who sees this. The polyester products adhere primarily by mechanical adhesion (sanding scratches, texture or 'tooth'). Self-etching primers, epoxy etc. rely on chemical and mechanical adhesion.
Polyester sticks like crazy (actually in that sense is similar to epoxy), the issue is not staying on the surface, it does a brilliant job at that level. The issue is rust protection and possible cracking under the sun if upper solvents pass to the polyester. That's why people like to make an epoxy sandwich with polyester inside.
@@pedromiguelareias I agree Pedro. My comment was mainly that the polyester does not rely on a chemical bond as do some others. Sticking is only sticking until it isn't, for what ever reason.
@@pedromiguelareias Excellent explanation guy! And after being hands on in "The Arts" over 30 years, and doing it BOTH ways off n on through the years? IF I am to do "an actual restoration of a classic car" for someone else, I recommend sealing the metal up fairly quickly after having your surface stripped "OR ready", Plus, ANY of my personal rides WILL BE/HAVE been done done the same way cuz yeah...Polyester HAS NO water resistance! Leave that car OUT (JUST in Feather Fill EVEN with proper metal prep) that HE is doing, in that Canadian weather for 3 months to a year AND THEN, look at it, Lol. The WHOLE darn "caaarr" (in Canadian accent 😁 lol ) WILL HAVE ta be stripped. Chad is a good guy in all, but obviously HAS NOT been in the actual "coatings application and etc." on a DAILY basis nor for a living....Seal that stuff up
@@pedromiguelareias I have a truck that’s been primed with featherfill and been sitting in the sun since may of this year and theirs no epoxy underneath of it, just minor bodywork and bare metal. No signs of cracking.

I really enjoy seeing you guys going on hunts/picks as well as the Bugatti build.
I'd be happy to get a top coat to look that good. Seriously, I have learned so much from Chad and wish I had found him before I restored my classic. We do not all have the luxury of a spray booth and amazing equipment- or the skill to go with it. We also want to do the work ourselves because we get a kick out of it, even if we can't hit perfection. I've picked up loads of tips for next time. Keep it up Chad and Jolene- brilliant stuff.

Well, that was a strange explanation. Featherfill is sort of an epoxy, because it is mixed with a hardner. What it does not do is seal out moisture, and that is what kills the paint adhesion. It would work ok I am sure for several years, if it was done in a dry shop. But epoxy is designed to be a solid moisture barrier, so no water can get to the metal at all, and why it is used on bare metal. Anyway, it will be good for years, most likely. Sanding and polishing the metal really has nothing to do with the chemistry of paint, that is the mechanical bond. Most of his stuff is good, shows good technique and so forth, but the education as to the real reasons why is sorely missing.
I used to see shop pile on the feather fill on a rusty sand blasted floor and wet sand it for hours. It would build and fill and make the metal look new. even add a little strength but sadly the stuff was like a sponge and water would go right thru it. A couple years later the rust was back and huge sheets of the stuff would pop off. There was another product I think amax or something that was water proof but it sanded like rock.
The explanation is ridiculous. The guy has no idea what he is talking about. It’s sad that he thinks he knows but has no idea.

@@wreckum56 You don't polish the metal to make the epoxy stick to it. You just clean it! I saw several spots with scratches in that epoxy.
And - this was not a demonstration. It's just a lot of talking.

Wow! Awesome advice! I’ve been following for awhile now since I picked up my 1965 caddy convertible, and haven’t started yet because it’s a huge project and have no idea where to start. Now when you said start with the easiest thing first...I was actually saving the body for last! Which right now it’s the easiest compared to the frame, floors, motor...I fucken thank you for this! Because it would be sitting there for awhile before starting since I was getting discouraged! And I LOVE THIS CAR! Love you guys!!! 🤘🏻

We used feather fill to cover fiberglass Corvettes 30 years ago and still use it today
Fiberglass cars are a different animal glass is always moving feather fill is basically fiberglass it self it uses Mekp to harden it
Two like kind materials go together better
Butt!!! If you leave it to thick it doesn’t have glass strands to reinforce it it will crack
You have to remove 90 % of it for it to last
With the advent of urethane products they are so much better
Why would you risk several hundred hours of work and use a crap product
Yeah urethane cost more but it lasts and has uv properties that polyester doesn’t
And it’s half the work of sanding concrete 😂

Used to paint cars with my dad in our garage. Never understood why we couldn’t just use the fastest thing for the job, until seeing how nice the finished product turned out. Watching brought back good memories.
My dad was a shade tree mechanic and he always told me " Do the easy things first " He bought and sold hundreds of cars in his prime from the early 40's- around 2000 , always classics ,a few street rods . He bought cars cheap made them safe and roadworthy and maybe a set of mags and tires and he seemed to always double his money..He was Charlie Stackhouse. Owner of "STACKS garage in the early 60s. What you talk about on this vid is what I did for 30 plus years . Many high end restorations ... 300 SL Mercs. , Porsche's , even a rare Facil Vega. Polish and block the bare metal before you ever apply primer or paint.if you want a perfect job (or at least as close as you can get to one)! Make no mistake, You are one of the BEST as far as I'm concerned.

Just keep doing what you are doing. I've learned a few things from your unique style and thought process! I've been able to modify and apply the advice you give to some of my own jobs. I work like a dog in the oilfield two weeks on, then come home and work like a dog to build a dream on my two weeks off. Ultimately I'm just a guy who did a favor for a guy, now I'm very busy. ABS stands for anti-lock braking system (ABS). It pulses the brakes to keep the them from locking up and causing the car to skid during a panic stop. It has nothing to do with reducing brake lining wear.
Yea im not sure what he's going about abs and epoxy lol.. Epoxy is a tuff material and it's designed to seal the body of the vehicle from the elements
