Thanks so much Davie! This fly and your pupa like this one are both beautiful. I am 4 of 5 flies into completing a series of caddis patterns making up the life cycle of the caddis in Instagram and tied both of these (pupa and emerger/dry). I've watched this video so many times and finally got to tying one. While there are a few steps, I kept pausing to get the steps and proportions correct and I'm very pleased with the results. I appreciate all you bring to the tying community... so very inspiring! - thanks again and all the best - Freddy

One of the top five Caddis pattern of his TH-cam channel. I tied some Caddis like this and was very pleasant fly.
You see those eyes on a fly you love and you figure things out - I'm surprised there is no burned scorching or anything on those eyes and they are still yellow. I make those eyes for immature damsel flies and my krill fly. So great - and your emerger is probably going to be a great pattern. Thanks for the video and good morning to you. Never thought to try and float this fly , looking forward to giving it a try, brilliant as usual cheers Davie.
I find in alpine lakes, letting it soak a little and just roll casting it out so its barely under the surface they hammer it, I usually put some glue under body or uv glue, I actually stopped using this caddis because it felt like I was cheating, I wasn't progressing because it was too easy. They will hammer on this fly all day long and it will get beat up. When I first started I would tie one of these on for a weekend trip and never take it off until it was just to beat up. Doing a nymph dropper with this is and using it as a strike indicator works well too. Great video!

I used the original McPhail Caddis as the fly to show how poor my fly tying was drunk vs sober. Wish I could share the comparison pic on this the drunk one really does look drunk especially the eyes.

My attempt didn't look nearly as good as yours Davie 😅, I had a hard job using the Deer Hair so I went to CDC and it did make it a little easier.

What a marvelously designed fly with some nice surprises in its construction. When looking at the thumbnail of a group of the flies, it looked like a fly with a vinyl rib on a yellow, dubbed body & spread wing created by tying in two clumps of deer hair. Wrong. After watching the video, it’s apparent that what looks like a body of yellow yarn with vinyl ribbing is actually a yellow ribbing over vinyl, & it has wings spread by the vinyl, thus simplifying the wing construction & improving the silhouette. I do wonder about the yellow eyes. All of the adult, emerging and aquatic forms of caddis that I’ve observed or seen photos of have black or dark brown eyes. Are the yellow eyes intended to serve as a form of hot spot?

I would certainly recommend the eyes on the original McPhail Pupa as well as on this pattern as they do work as a form of hot spot though you could easily colour the eyes with a brown marker as I have done this on other patterns...I am glad you liked the design of the fly..Happy New Year..

Hi Davie thanks for all the great videos I learn a lot from you but can I ask why do you use different hooks for your dry flies I mainly use the kamasan B170 on most of your flies so do I have to change my hooks for the rest of your dry flies or can I just continue to use the kamasan B170 thanks

I just have a pile of hooks that I have bought for customers over the years like the ones I used in this video..I do use Kamasan and the B170 is certainly a great dry fly hook. I also like the B160 which I would recommend for this fly due to the wind gape and I use it on many emergers and dry flies..I'm glad you liked the fly and that you enjoy the videos..Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year..

Hi Davie I'm having trouble with this one and hope you can help. I've got the white yarn and I've tried dying it Flo-yellow, then tried bright yellow but it doesn't want to take to the yarn. Im using the Veniard dyes and basically followed your dying video am I doing something wrong? Do you use yarn that comes already dyed yellow or do you dye it yourself? If so how?

Another beautiful tie sir. One question? Since iv been learning from you for awile now,thank you,but can you riddle me this...how do you not forget to take the wax off your finger??so far ive found it on my leg and back in the morning usally. Ive just dug a piece out of my pocket and im pretty sure there might be one or two peices stuck on the grand kid lol.

I have found pieces of wax in places that no one could imagine. One of the worst places is finding what's left after it has dissolved at the bottom of my cup of tea after drinking it and thinking there's something wrong with the milk..🤮not nice so after nearly 40 years of practise I am still doing it🤣

Instead of using the yellow yarn for the body just use your thread or a fine floss as you will find this a bit easier though you will need to add a few more turns, let me know how you get on..
