Looks as if it will do the damage Davie, another braw wee beastie. Just finished off half a dozen brigadiers this morning. Filling a box of Capt John Kennedy flies for South Uist trip. Clan Chief next then Green French partridge.🤞.Thanks for the tips. 👍👏🎣
First I have seen the use of CDL for the horns/top wing of a caddis. Especially appreciate the simplicity of the fly. Greetings from Kimberley in the East Kootenays of BC!
I am sure it will work fantastically well, in spain a similar model without CDC and with the genuine "gallo de león" feathers is quite traditional and efficient.
It's hard to procure good CDL down-under in NZ but I will certainly replicate this one if only in a slightly different colour. Thanks so much for your inspiration.
I've only got the dark speckled cdl but I've got some matching CDC so it'll be a different colour but definitely will attract a trout or 2, fantastic pattern Mr Mcphail!!! ATB Chris.
Davie, My name is Kevin Baumgarten and I am an avid fly fisherman living in Nashville, TN. Thanks to you, I am now also an avid fly tier too! Your videos gave my tying game the refinement I needed to take it to the next level. The tips and strategies you teach not only apply to the small dry flys but also to tying large musky and striper flys too. Other than just saying thanks, I was hoping to be able to send you a couple pictures of a bwo pattern of yours I scaled up to fish the Michigan Hex hatch. The pattern is the most successful fly I have ever fished and my buddies all agree! Do you have an email address I can send the pics to??? Thank you for your time and for being the best teacher on the web!!!
Hi Kevin, I would love to see your fly but I can't put my email address on a public page though if you have an instagram or a Facebook page you can PM me with the photos...It's great to hear that my videos have helped you in your fishing and fly tying and thank you for the kind words.. All the very best Davie
Hi Stephen, I bought the ones I have online and at fly tying shows, I have attached a link to some I found on Ebay for you to see..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=whiting+coq+de+leon+saddle&_sacat=0
Hi Terry, I have attached a link to some saddles as these are the ones I like to buy.www.slideinn.com/product/whiting-coq-de-leon-rooster-saddle/ All the very best Davie..
Can I please ask a question Davie. What would be the best pattern for tying fish imitations seen alot but recently seen a fly called the game changer just wandered if you heard or seen 1
Hi Stewart, There's many styles and patterns out there that do a great job at representing a small fish and the game changer is one of them..I've never tyed one before as you do need a lot of bits to tye one and as far as I believe it's around £10 though I could be wrong... All the very best Davie..
Nice one Davie. I’m off to the bench right now to make another mess! Is there any practical use on any fly at all for the waste “fluff” at the bottom of feathers that gets ripped off and discarded? Could it be put in a grinder and be made into dubbing for example. Cheers
Hi David, It's amazing sometimes what you can do with the waste of the materials we use even the fluff at the bottom of the feathers..If it's long enough you can wind it up like a herl but if you can't then you can dub it just like I did and trim it back as it will give you a lovely body..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie
It's funny I own several Coq capes. Nothing fancy, I have a dark and a light, but then I found one in lavender!! Be still my beating heart! (Not too still). I own two or three bunches of Spanish Coq feathers and I dole these out so carefully! I don't like killing chickens as I have said, but honestly I know I'm not helping much. I'm just using mine cautiously but really I'm maybe saving a chicken every two years. It ain't much is it? Do you feel the horns are necessary?
Fantastic looking caddis pattern. I love these cdc flies. What do you do to keep this fly floating after it has been sunk or caught a few fish? Cheers Davie
Hi J P, I use a floatant on them first and then after each fish I wash and dry them with amadou patch though a powered dry float will also keep them up..I will also change them as well after time as it's best to do this as the fly will last longer it you allow them to dry completely...I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie..

Very nice Davie. CDL is getting very hard to get your hands on and very expensive.
Smashing video I only started last year and have found your instruction the best and be easiest to follow M
I like it Davie, of course you can experiment with different colours of cdc.

Love the style, lightweight and quite durable I'd guess.

Caddis have a reverse taper, why do you tie Caddis with a “Mayfly” taper?
