  • Completed in 2018, the Boys’ Hostel Block at the St. Andrews Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram, was proposed as a linear built mass in the existing master plan of the campus, which posed challenges to create socially active and environmentally sustainable spaces. Subsequently, the Girls’ Hostel takes cues from the adjacent Boys’ Hostel Block and is articulated in brick and fair-faced concrete, with exposed structural members abutting the structure along all sides. The hostels’ design empowers students with freedom of movement within an environment that prioritizes thermal comfort and functionality, to become an exemplar of zero energy design.
    Founding Director and Principal of Zero Energy Design Lab, Sachin Rastogi, narrates the process of designing and detailing the projects, as they blend traditional and modern knowledge to regulate internal temperatures.

    A very well structured presentation. Glad to see the architect go beyond the typical ‘this is how we responded to the client brief’ and discuss the technicalities of planning, structural and material constraints and solutions.

    One of the best design i have seen conceptually till date on this channel. Kudos to the architect who took the limitations of the site and available construction materials as a challenge and produced this thoughtful design. Not only the building is environment friendly but is also exiting as a livable space. I would also like to mention here that very few architects in india are currently using advance software like Grasshopper and Ecotect analysis in their design process so full points to the design team on that front.

    Very nicely explained the design. I liked the building, in its row form and rugged. It was giving soothing effect in evening with lights and studying in open spaces. Feeling a like in vacation. Greenery surrounding the building also gives a good effect on it.

    Kudos to the architect to pull this off especially on a shoe string budget. One can see a lil bit of Pompidou center, a bit of Maxxi museum, dose of Loui Kahn and of course the mandatory forced parametricism. Climactic response is well considered al though master planning could have been way better and help in mitigating the climactic responses, construction is sub par, would not last for an institutional building of this scale not sure what the management was thinking.

    Obviate the need for air conditioning but i can see windows ACs all over, than what purpose this building served, 🤔

    • @ramanujamm1421
      @ramanujamm1421 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess those are desert coolers and not window ACs... Evaporative cooling which is economical and predominantly used in Hot & dry climate zones like North India...

    • @tmohitm02
      @tmohitm02 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ramanujamm1421 i live in rajasthan itself sir, and they are air conditioners.

    • @KiranKartheep
      @KiranKartheep 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not like they can obviate ACs fully. Whatever we do, the climatic change has been so bad that ACs are must. Atleast they can use ACs less time by this way. Obviate the need for air conditioning is just a exagerated claim.

    • @KiranKartheep
      @KiranKartheep 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dont agree with you but i get you. I love the imperfections of an unfinished building. The bare bricks, steel, concrete. Its like accepting ones imperrfection as the unique beauty in them rather than trying to hide them. But not all can feel that way, thats how we are unique and imperfect as this building.
