    14:52 #33 blocking like that and getting it done because he was a QB in college.

    • @PureMagma
      @PureMagma ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "...Trey Lance is not used to it." is a critical point being made right there. The QB with the least confidence gets to stand behind the backup O-line and *#33 is at work* standing out because he's on the job instead of just 'playing a game.'

    Always a good idea to trade a boatload of picks for a four year+ project

    • @TheGeorgeD13
      @TheGeorgeD13 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @ch-yq5yn Absolutely and that's not hypocritical. You don't make that kind of trade unless you think he can start right away. That kind of trade should never be done on a project. Ever. Especially for a team that was contending. You can't afford to waste contending years with those picks on guys that can't contribute right away. If he came out rocking, then it was a great decision. For them to immediately have him sit made it an all-time horrible decision.
      It'd still be a great move if he sat for a year and then they didn't hesitate to put him in as the starter the next year like the Chiefs did with Mahomes. But they didn't do that either. Shannahan was never enthusiastic about him to begin with and reportedly wanted someone else. That's an organizational failure to have a GM and a HC not in sync about a big draft pick, especially what they gave up for that draft pick.

      The chances of that are quite low. I think a lot of people would still say it was a very risky gamble to make even if it worked out immediately. @ch-yq5yn

      @@TheGeorgeD13 The plan was to sit him for a year and start the next. He was handed the keys in 2022, not only underperformed but got injured in week 2. His backups backup came in and balled out, earning the the job of starting QB. Its unfortunate that the big move ended up being a waste, but there was no time to plug in a young QB and cross fingers in hopes that he improves. I doubt Shanahan and Lynch were looking at someone else, because the only other options were Fields and Jones and we all can guess how that would've turned out.

    lance first drive - 2/3, 22 yards int
    lance last 3 drives - 10/15, 151 yards, td
    first drive ended with an interception on the screen but the last 3 drives resulted in a field goal, touchdown, field goal scores
    again it was against 3rd stringers for the most part but at least lance is gaining some confidence
    but we're also seeing lance actually continuing to start off slow but playing a lot better as he gets more playing time and into a rhythm on offense ... which was the case in the first preseason game vs las vegas too
    lance first 3 drives: 2/4, 9 yards
    lance last 3 drives: 8/11, 103 yards, td
    which makes sense since he hadn't taken a snap or seen live action in a "real game" since week 2 of the 2022 season when he suffered that ankle injury ... so around 11 months
    i mean if you look at lance's preseason combined stats thru the first two games it's not the doom and gloom many think it is
    22/33, 285 yards, 2 td/1 int, 101.2 QB rating
    jury is still out on lance as a whole but for those who think he's a bust or giving up on him are just in a rush to judge his career when he's barely gotten any consistent playing time on the field thru his first two seasons
    even with that purdy likely will begin the 2023 season as the starting QB for the 49ers but it's way too early to come to a conclusion of lance's career and future until he actually gets playing time ... whether that's with the 49ers or with another NFL team
    as a lance supporter i'm still hoping it's with the 49ers but not sure shanahan is onboard at this point as he's really bought into purdy and has had his eye on darnold since the 2018 NFL draft probably before they traded for jimmy g midway thru 2017 and even liked him darnold enough still to even think about trading for him in early 2021 before they moved up in march to #3 where they ultimately draft lance in april, and then signed him on day 1 in free agency earlier this year

      I'll only add one thing. The stipulation of it being against the 3rd string really should stop. He is throwing to 3rd stringers and having 3rd stringers block for him. They weren't doing him any favors early on so let's not act like he did this with the starters against the 3rd string Broncos.

      The bummer is that Trey still put some really terrible film up there in his first few minutes. I don't think he can afford much more of that. When Trey missed that wide open route (@13:35) the broadcast panned over to Kyle and he was just shaking his head in a sort of livid disbelief. Not a good sign. By the time he led the drive to win the game, he was playing against the Broncos' 3rd string defense. So I don't know if it was enough.

Not out of hate but out of the fact that Kyle is clearly in win now mode with big contracts coming up he wont be able to give Trey those crucial snaps whereas Sam Darnold and to an extent Brock Purdy are proven to be capable. For the benefit of his development and his career Trey should go somewhere else where they’ll focus on developing his instincts. That is why Jack Colletto is obviously being trained up as his replacement. Don't be surprised to see him make the 53 as a special teams player and locking him up so someone else doesn't scoop him. The analysis is on point. While it is encouraging to see the slight improvements towards the end of the game, nevertheless he is still far from ready to play. That tells me he didn't learn a thing when he was the scout team QB in year 1. As for last year, he was unlucky because he broke his ankle. The issue now is we have Darnold in the picture, if he can't beat out Darnold as No.2, that means he won't get any reps as the 3rd stringer QB. I still say the overarching problem is drafting this green a QB when the organization is already ready to win. This is not Lance's fault, this is on Shanahan and Lynch. Even the decision of starting him last year was also a mistake because I am 100% certain he would have been pulled the moment he started losing more games, just imagine if we think he isn't ready now, he surely wasn't ready a year ago if not even worse. I don't know what the answer is, he will have to ball out next week to have half a chance in beating Darnold, failing that I guess he will have to wait for his chances should there be injuries, but no one wants that.

    Decent analysis compared to the other emotional rants from the amateur analyst that have never studied the position. I'd just make a couple of points. 1) How does his improvement on good throws compare to last year regular season games. Has he taken a step back. Possibly. 2) It's natural for a young player to take a step back when they haven't played competitive ball for 11 months. Don't care how much film you get, without reps in game situations, it's hard to improve. So the fact he settled down and got into a bit of a grove is similar to what we saw when he played in last year's games. Not much progress, but understandable giving that he wasn't cleared to play until summer.
    3) The number one factor in how an NFL quarterback performs.... You guessed it, it's experience / age. It's all about being in the league and getting the reps to catch up to it. There are few P. Mahones, and lots of John Elway's and Eli Manning's. Most, including Brady got better with age, despite diminishing physical skills. I'd make no concrete assessments of Lance in the first two games after coming off an injury and now stuck playing with a group of unknown 2nd and 3rd stringers.
    What we'd like to see going forward is he settles in earlier, rather than requiring two series to do so. He makes fewer mistakes as he gets reps. And of course he gets a little better protection as well. Getting reps is good, but if your protection breaks down every other play, when you're still struggling with some basics, it can be detrimental to your improvement. Many in such situations start picking up bad habits. The fact Lance, with his running ability shows he can break the pressure and still keep some poise is a huge postive in my opinion. A big improvement from what we saw in his rookie season when it was duck the rush and take off. You knew it was just a matter of time before he'd get injured because he was taking a beating trying to do too much and taking off and taking hits as well.
    Unfortunately for Trey, he's set up to sit and not get reps after next week. That will mean his progress is slowed. For Trey, the situation took a turn for the worse, because of Brock showed he is one of the few rookie QB's who can come in and do it from the get go. Trey is so needy of reps and he's just not going to get them with the Niners at this point as they are focused on a SuperBowl and he needs a season or two of game time playing to be able to lead a team to the playoffs, much less the SB. Donaldson is more prepared and capable at this point that is obvious, he's got 5 years and 50 games under his belt. This advantage would be even more obvious when lining up against the best defenses in the NFL.

    10:02. The play call actually should have forced the LB to follow the RB, which he did not do. Lance should never assume that the LB is going to do what he is actually supposed to do, so either way you look at it it was a bad play by Lance. Still.. you're wrong about the LBs responsibility.. there is no reason there should have been 2 LBs in the same area.. so clearly the LBs job was to follow the back. Had Lance not made an assumption, and if LAnce was seeing the whole field like he should be.. then he would have seen the LB not covering the back and could have swung it out to the back
