  • We diagnose the Yamaha Big Bear for no Spark and the Starter will not work.
    We will take a look at this four wheeler and it's electrical problem. This ATV has several problems and this time we will look at the wiring and do some diagnostic work.

    I am a Gold certified Yamaha technician. I curiously watch people’s diagnostic videos for amusement. When you plugged in the peak voltage adapter I knew you knew a thing or two. Great video! Subscribed and liked.

      Seems that if one were to do this sort of thing professionally, they'd just buy a multimeter with a good peak voltage feature. On the other hand, one could probably make an adapter like that for free with some electronic scraps.

      Then maybe you can help me out on my 01 big bear 400 4x4 ive took a test light everything has power but when i flip the key on my nuetral light doesnt come on headlights wont come on wont do nothing with the start button everything has power no blown fuses just stumped on it

    Good job considering the mass of wires and vac hoses . I hope you can do a video on all the vents and vacuum lines .Ever since I
    Messed up the placement of my lines my bear won't start,

    Wiring is crazy. I have a KE 175 that when you turn left or right blinker it blinks slow and dim and the break light flashes to. What do you think I need to look at and I’ve replaced the blinker relay.

      That sounds like a ground problem.

    I've got a 2003 yamaha big bear 400 4x4 it lost all electrical power while riding on blacktop. It's got 12.80volts going into the white relay on a R/B but not on any of the other wires going into it. No power on the R/B where it plugs into the kill switch on the handlebar. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have always had trouble understanding atv wiring and ignition systems Taking it to a shop is not an option I simply don't have the money. I do have any part I might need except the cdi. Thank you.

    Is there a constant voltage to the ECM and is it 5vdc to operate and does it have a memory draw down capacitor, reason I ask is I have a 2002 big bear 350 that ran up till the starter clutch finally gave up and I parked it , didn’t get around to replacing for a few years now and I’m having same problems or symptoms and not having the shop manual to tel me how the ECM is configured? Maybe I’m way off thinking they would be like automotive control modules and premature on when the started using this on atvs

      This is a pretty simple system. It is a capacitor discharge type of system with a few more controls built into it. It is not battery powered for the actual spark at all. Only the controlling functions are battery powered. You are probably over thinking it. Thank you for watching.

    I got a 2000 big bear. Installed a new switch. The off position is the on and you can pull the key out. The on position is the off? No cut wires.

    Which wire was the coil wire you checked the continuity on in the plug?

    Great video mine will pull start and the neutral light will come on when running put it in gear start to go and it start sputtering and die it will not electric start and the green light will not come on at all can figure out what is wrong with it

    does this make any sense? i have a 2003 grizzly 350 yamaha it was running ok when i turned on the 4 wheel drive it started running terrible like it was not getting fuel and shut off and will not start...

      I also have a 1989 350 BB. New coil, CDI, Stator. Hit the starter button and it sparks 1 time, shut key off try again same thing. It has 2 triggers and 2 raised bosses on flywheel spaced about 3 inches apart. Im guessing while cranking it uses retarded trigger and when you let go of button it uses advanced trigger. It has 3 relays, do you have testing info on relays.

    great video,thanks, I have a 94 timberwolf that has no spark, i think its the cdi bad also, i bought one on amazon for $15.00 not sure if its good or bad,still no spark....im going to try and test the plug to the cdi.....I hate to spend the $175 for a good brand cdi if thats not the problem, a friend helped test the stator and pick up coil, they seem to be good....

      It wasn't the problem , it ended up being the stator, I got one for $85 on Amazon , runs great now

    Would that CDI cause the machine to break up while on the gas in neutral and while riding it

    I got a Yamaha 250 no spark , I check pickup coil gad 450ons in red and white nothing on the other wires you think it's bad

    My 400 big bear is in time getting really good fire to the plug new carb good compression not sucking air what could be my problem back fire's sometimes but no start

      There's a Carter key on the flywheel if it broke will have fuel spark but still won't start hapend to me 2 times you need to make sure cam gear and indicator on jug line up while engine is at tdc a single tooth off you will have back fire and no start

    I have the exact same problem as this video....Was riding Big Bear 400 normally, and it suddenly stalled (no sputtering, just cut out suddenly).
    I put it in neutral, green light is lit, but won't crank. I can jump the solenoid and it cranks, but it wont start. And it wont start with the pull start either (which I know is good since ive used it recently).
    Did you ever fix the quad in your video, and did the CDI box fix the no crank problem, or was that another issue entirely?
    These CDI boxes are WAY more expensive than the big bear 350 or any of the contemporary Yamaha quads, and no one even seems to have new ones, they're all used.

      That is what I ran into. I think the used CDI ran about $250.00 at the time on Ebay. Check your stator first to see if the pick up coil or crank position sensor is still good before tossing a CDI at it.

    help have 1988 big bear was running great then it suddenly stopped . now when i crank the engine it sparks one time . 20 seconds or so later i crank the motor sparks 1 time please help

    Where is the main fuse located?

      The main fuse is on the side of the starter relay. Follow the positive battery cable and it will lead you to the starter relay. Thank you for watching.

      There is some for the Kodiak but not sure there is for the Big Bear. They are different. I ordered one of the super cheap ones for the Kodiak and it plugs in but does not function. Thank you for watching.

      I have a 400 big bear had the starter seal leak and get oil in the starter this In turn (creating lots of resistance) messed up lost of things I got lots of replacement parts start switch starter starter solenoid CDI all cheep ones off Amazon they barley brake $100 all together
      I only used the starter and cdi what I found was a bw wire that attaches from cdi to starter solenoid didn’t have proper 12v so I jumped it off ignition fuse 10a that fixed it I tryed the old cdi after I got it started and it didn’t fire the coil … the two wires that fire the starter solenoid messed me up in my diagnosis they both have 12v but there is a inline diode that switches one wire to ground when you push the start button ( I have no wiring diagram for this ) it also is not the same wiring as the one you are working on as the cdi is different looking and there is no interrupt relay for the starter button . So I would say that I didn’t fix what is broken but it dose work now ..The Blue with white striped wire ( that I jumped )should supply power from the CDI maybe one day I’ll try to get a wiring diagram for it
