For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.

So if I use a 50mm lens I should get a 1/8 Pro mist filter?

A "feature" of digital photography is that everything is sharp and ultra-defined in a paradise for pixel-peepers. Yet there is an appealing and desirable ascetic in the imperfection of film photography and to myself, Pro-Mist filters is a way of putting that back into digital photography.

Really interesting Kyle - thank you. I’d been wondering about how to address what I have come to see as increasingly uncomfortable sharpness in modern lenses and this is a good option.
But above all the two films are beautiful. Especially the one about Bruce. I grew up through the back half of the Cold War and the fear was real. With the madness in the world today I completely understand his take on life. His final words really hit home; ‘I’ve come to discover that I dare not change one thing.’ Wow. Wish I had Bruce’s clarity and mindfulness. Watched it twice, straight through. Very powerful work.

Since one of my nowadays very old DSLR renders more film-esque, i hope to enhance that feeling a bit more with an 1/8 black mist filter, without overdoing it.

I have a vintage Spiratone Mist Maker filter. I wonder which strength of Pro Mist filter it would be comparable with. I also have one where the center is clear. Back in the day I used them occasionally with a Nikkor 1.4 50mm lens. If I could adapt it to use with a Fujifilm x100s that would be great.

Never even knew what a mist filter was but now I’m going to have to get one. I love the character that it adds.🤘

Is it like the old FOG filters? It looks like one of the mild fog filters...

How i should meter the light if I’m using the pro Mist 1/4? Like usually + 1 stopp or do I need more stops?

Hey! did you used the 1/8 for film on the Pentax? If you did, how was it?

I've been softening my images in NIK. I'll give these a try! Have you tried the 1/2 and 1? The warm version also looks intriguing.

The 1/4 is the strongest I've used. ATM, it's the heaviest I'd go.

I couldn't justify the price of the tiffen filter so I found that Hoya also makes a black mist filter for about 1/3, I'm looking forward to trying it out, I think it'll work well with my night photography.

Love this. I have the 1/2 and 1/4 black mist and moonlit knights in the winter, at least in the uk, offer huge potential. Are you now permanently back in Canada btw?

Not permanently. Just waiting on my visa to be approved. Should be back in the near future.

Could the Dehaze slider in Lightroom get you similar result without using Pro mist filter ?

I was looking to get a similar effect but I think both of these are way too strong. What if you breath on your uv filter before a shot?

    Good stuff like always, Kyle.
Would running a Pro-mist Black be much different than going a little negative on the Dehaze slider do you think?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, IMO it isn't something that can be re-created in post as it's affecting the way the light is hitting the glass.

@@KyleMcDougall Gotcha. It's such a commitment to baking that glow in. But...that's how we all did it in the old days, just went for it or duped it then applied the effect.
      Thanks!

Hi Kyle, what is the absorption factor of 1/4 and 1/8 filters when using an external light meter? How much does it need to be added? I can't find this information on the Tiffen web-site. Thank you, Giulio
