Now spilling a Cola on the mobo is something to freak out a little bit about; immediate power down, disassemble, rinse with generous amounts of filtered water, and the drying process.
Water is still a problem. Although it can dry, and can't short circuit the board if there's no power.... the water still will leave behind moisture under chips and initiate slow corrosion of the board, which could take weeks or months, and will still cause issues down the line. You'd still want to rinse with alcohol.

And not only were we mounting the coolers right on the die, the cool kids were actually polishing the die with sandpaper first to get maximum surface contact.

I once spilled a glass of water down the top vents of my tower, while it was running. The mobo and videocard were soaked... Nothing broke. I think keeping dry is more precautionary and safe, than water being certain death.
It's what we just did 15 years ago. Without the "user safety cap", everyone had to be careful. So clearly something to do at home. The voided warranty might be an issue though.
I just watched the video today where they lapped the CPU die by 0.2mm and got 5 degrees. Now I want to see them bare die liquid cool that chip like they did in this video, with a good board and great radiator, and see how far they can overclock it :D

I've been overclocking since forever - my daily driver is a 2500k that's been at 5ghz for 6 years at 1.48v. I have never had to exercise a warranty replacement - though I did snap a board in half in the 386sx days.

in germany the law is written in a way that the company would have to prove that the damage was caused by the customer(like for example through those liquid damage detection stickers) but breaking a warranty void seal is of course not prove that the customer broke it.

Without special placeholder on retension mechanism, the cpu wouldn't get enough tension&lose contact with pads. And only oil surrounding the dies will be heated at first, and won't get optimized result in a long run. It'd be like submerging a shower head spraying hot water in a tub filled with lukewarm water.

Capacitors still have power and the salts in water stay behind after it dries leaving conductive layer.

I've been overclocking since forever - my daily driver is a 2500k that's been at 5ghz for 6 years at 1.48v.
I have never had to exercise a warranty replacement - though I did snap a board in half in the 386sx days.

You realize that "5Ghz" is a wireless frequency range and not a CPU I/O speed frequency range, they are two very different things, also routers have been operating on the 5Ghz spectrum band for years and CPUs have gone far past 5Ghz before, just check this place valid.x86.fr/records.html

Well, a certain person very protective of big corporations and such will probably make sure this comes to nothing in the US.
However, I'm pretty sure removing the IHS will continue to void your warranty.
in germany the law is written in a way that the company would have to prove that the damage was caused by the customer(like for example through those liquid damage detection stickers) but breaking a warranty void seal is of course not prove that the customer broke it.

Out of curiousity, why didn't you attach the fittings to block off the bench when you just had the 2 tubes in your hand. You could have avoided water on board issue if you just attached to block then mounted it on the CPU. I do contracting work if you need anymore advice ;)
