I've wanted a British Shorthair every since I saw Church, the cat in "Pet Semetary". I purchased my own Brit kitten 6yrs ago, from a private breeder, as a retirement gift to myself. Rocky is the perfect companion, quiet, independent, and loving. He does not like to be picked up, and carried around, but frequently gives me kisses, and makes "biscuits" on his own terms. He's very sociable. Rocky thinks everyone who comes to my house is there to visit him, and every package delivered belongs to him.
Wouldn't say so. My British short hair likes being picked up, hugging or laying on my lab since he was a kitten. I guess it depends on how you treat it.
@@funktastisch845 no, is he purebred? Lots of people say that they have "British Shorthair Blue " when you have the pedigree and the genetics test, than you know that your cat is purebred. Maybe yours is a exception...

Very accurate description! I have a gorgeous lilac queen. She's 3 years old and I have her for 6 months now. She's very easy going with kind nature. She doesn't like to be picked up but loves petting especially around face, ears and head, but touching thighs, belly or paws is a bed idea- she'll run away. She welcomes me when I get home and follows me around everywhere around the flat or balcony. When she's resting she likes to keep body contact with me,so there will be always paw or back touching me. She sleeps with me in bed, somewhere around my legs. She's not scared of guests and is relaxed around new people too. She's not interested in my food, likes only her dry food. I often have to throw away wet food if it's not particular texture, flavour or brand. Not very chatty cat as well, only from time to time. She loves watching cat entertainment on TV such as birds, bees or fishes. Easy to co-exist with my Molly.
Can tell mine in the same breed by reading this description! Almost identical traits. Etti sleeps in the same shoebox she adopted for her bed as a kitten 4 years ago. Box is always on the bed by the feet😂😂 Its very fun to read the posts and see your cat in so many of the descriptions
Our blue BSH hasn't got instructed in not liking to be picked up or sit on laps. He LOVES being carried around, and if he could he would prefer to be carried around all day. As for lap sitting, as soon we sit on the couch he's on our lap like velcro.
I have a nearly 6 yo British shorthair cat, he's absolutely adorable. A little aristocrat for sure, he's very gentle and never pushes obstacles out of his way, he simply walks around or jumps over them. He's often home alone while I'm working and I've never come home to a mess caused by him. He doesn't like being picked up, but he allows me to do so every once in a while, so I can cuddle him for half a minute or so and then he expects me to gently put him down and leave him alone again. He does like to stay close to me throughout the apartment though, always laying nearby and he's happy to get petted every now and then, even accepting kisses on the head, neck and belly. Very rarely he comes to directly seek my attention, but he plays quite a bit on his own. He's a great companion for people who want a fluffy roommate that's quite independent as well.
After 35 years of breeding Brits, I can say that the video is fairly true to form. During WW1 and WW2 there was an attraction to "blue" cats but most pedigreed cats, no matter what breed were desimated by the wars. The introduction of other cats on the UK isles built the breed back up. But also introduced other patterns and color varietites. The Brit is a "supervisor" and "manager" of the household. They know everything that's going on in their world. It is true they do not like to be held but they will sit by you near you and very in touch with what you are doing. Brits are a strong independent family companion.
I’ve got a pure grey British shorthair with bright orange eyes and it is super friendly and chubby and extremely welcoming and adapts very quickly to its surroundings and super friendly
Thanks for the information, and especially for your notes to avoid unethical breeders and scammers. There are so many wonderful cats at shelters that make the best companions and need our care! Jus over a year ago I rescued/adopted my first cat, and it's been a rewarding and challenging journey. We are growing to really love each other. I also notice is how much she listens and picks up on. And from your video I just learned that she is a British Short Hair! She fits your description almost to a T - other than she likes a short pick up cuddle every day, and she has some past trauma so we had to work together to stop her scratching when she got triggered. We did that mostly through talking, no punishment, just me saying ouch and explaining to her then it hurts, point to the scratch, saying gently but firmly "be gentle" then letting her be. That sounds crazy but it really worked! Just talking and letting her "process". I notice cats do listen, they just take a little time to process what we say, whereas dogs respond more quickly. Thanks again for this info, now I know the breed of my dear cat companion!
My 12-year-old Brit was a stray that was left at the end of someone's driveway. She is vocal with a sweet little meow unless she is fighting with her tuxedo cat sister. Then she lets out a lion-like growl of discontent. Her chubby cheeks that remind one of a teddy bear are her best feature- so cute. Bedtime is her favorite time as she meows excitedly on the bed while I get ready. The two of us watch cat videos on the iPad as she snuggles by my side. She is a treasure.
Very accurate to my Brit. I was lucky to find him at a rescue. He came from Kuwait and was flown to the States. Now he is a happy kitty who will be happy to lick anyone’s hand if they pet him.
I have a lilac point, hes 10 now. He has such a funny character, always doing something to make us laugh. One difference to what you said is about personal space, my boy will sit on you and will get as close to your face as possible, even when I'm sitting up he will climb up to my chest so that we are face to face. My first cat was a British short hair. His name was sir Ashton Winston Churchill. Hot him from a shelter and he was my best friend in the world! He was 18 when he passed away. I actually want another. I love this breed. Only thing I disagree with is that ash was a big lap cat! He always came to sit in my lap. And he purred like a motorcycle lol
Have you done anything to ash come to the lap? I just got one (kitten) but she absolutely don't like to be picked up at the moment. Which is a shame because we had a Burmese one and she always come to us.
I have a BSH, She is lovable and likes to stay on me not on other people. But what you mentioned in the vid is spot on ..... Amazing Breed which goes well with my other two cats (Not BSH). She is soundless ... Just meows (Softly) when she is really hungry and we are giving her wet food
Such a good video. I must say cats have very different personalities. Mine has NEVER meowed and is okay being held for long periods of time. Thanks for all the information!
G'day. My British Shorthair male is 30 months old, from a recognised breeder. Contrary to breed characteristics, he loves being picked up and carried on shoulder, and will sit quietly on my lap for hours at a time. He tends to have seperation anxiety if I work away for more than 2 days , even in the company of my wife. 95% inside cat, but when outside will hunt and pounce on any moth, butterfly or moving item. He had never been outside before 18months old , and I think he believed that the Sky was going to fall on him, but with time and encouragement is semi comfortable in yard, as long as he has company. BEST CAT I HAVE EVER HAD, and reciprocates all the love he is given.
We purchased our boy from a breeder in Adelaide, who was an older lady. She had problems with council as she overstepped her cat numbers, and she was having health problems as well. She sold all her cats except the one or two for companions, and no longer breeds or sells.
Hey there, I been thinking about bying a Short hair cat from a breeder, I fell in love with their round cartoony face, and cuteness! This video is almost convincing me to get one 😍!
We have one too here in Rhodes-Greece…friends of us found her in the street 3 months old and they gave it to us!…I have 3 children and they love her!!!!…now we have her almost 2 years and she is our best member of our family!❤️❤️❤️
I have a British Shorthair called Cookie, she is a girl... she is in perfect condition, and you just helped me a lot and taught me about British Shorthair's health!😎
My Neptune hates cuddles, he just sits beside me and let me pet him, but when I try to hug him, he moves away lol.. He's very smart though.. took me only 2 days to train him to do high fives.. He's very quiet and only meows when he wants food, and only meows like twice lol
I absolutely adore these. We have a 6 year old british shorthair boy (a colorpoint with blue eyes, so cute) and he's amazing. He's actually very vocal and loves to cuddle - mostly with me and not so much with my fiancé tho. He doesn't like being picked up, but enjoys petting. He's mostly lazy but has bursts of energy and runs around the house here and there, or he plays with our other kitty. He can also be very jealous. We got a new kitten this year, a Maine Coon girl, and he's not verry happy when I pay attention to her instead of him. But in general they get along pretty well - we got her cuz we noticed he was quite lonely and sad when we weren't at home, so this way he has a companion :3
As I have first hand experience with this breed. I will say this is the most coolest cat breed ever. Extremely goofy and sometimes outlandishly stubborn. Mostly a couch potato. Every cat breed is different and has unique traits and personalities but BSH breed is really something truly unique. Once you own this breed of cat, some how every other breed feels like they are just ordinary cats in terms of personalities. This is the BEST cat to have around as they are super friendly with everything. They will even snuggle up to complete strangers.
I really would love some tips when trying to figure out if a breeder is trying to scam you out or not. I want a British Shorthair because they fit me and my partner personality but I want to just be sure that Im looking out for the right things with a breeder
I recently adopted a stray British Blue kitten and these characteristics just match him perfectly. He really is calm and loves to sleep a lot 🤗. Very helpful video for me.
I just adopted two female 12 week old British shorthair(dad) X Ragdoll(mom) mix. It is only my second day with them and I could say that I truly adore them. One of them loves to be picked up and the other does not. One has short hair the other one is a little fluff ball but they are both oh so freaking gorgeous. They can be the calmest kittens around and then out of nowhere they get a case of the zoomies and start darting and roughhousing together. I named them Sasha and Porsche(a). Will come back with an update. Strongly recomend this mix and definitely get two from the same liter.
@@EEEBA1 To avoid any possibility of seperation anxiety and so they would have someone to play with when I step out of the house for a couple of hours plus I have the space and budgeted to do so.
my british shorthair is the opposite of lazy, she is 24/7 energy bundle, eating 250grams of food every day and still thin, opening my drawers, jumping on the kitchen etc :D she is a tiger black color
my cat does have a strange thing with not pushing doors open in his way. he doesn't meow but chirps. he is so well behaved. he does love other kitties, he's like papa cat to our younger ones. he's loves cuddles and wants to be on my lap most of the time. 😸
I have been lucky enough to have had/have two British shorthair and two Maine coon cats (all males.) The pic at 5:50 shows two young versions of both. The Maine coon is a lot larger and very vocal. If I could pick it would be a 50/50 split, they both have great temperaments, the Brit has a cute pretty boy look with perfect fur while the Maine coon has a more rugged manly appearance as far as cats go. I have owned/own two of each because they are both great breeds.
i have a british blue and another british shorthair (creme/beige stripe ) sleeping on my lap rn . my british blue loves all foods and even went in the fridge once . my other one is playful and kind . he will never ever bite or harm you , he will only lick and he alsoloves drinking water out of the tap
I have 3 cats and all of them are British shorthairs One of them is grey/blue colored fur and with golden eyes she has well manners and when she bite you she doesn't hold you long just one bite and she goes away One of them was abused by his father but when he got to our house and after 4-6 months he now has beautiful white colored fur and ocean eyes One of them is Coffee colored fur and golden eyes and she is the most disobedient, she literally bites toes and won't get off but she is very fun to play with
Love the ones that have more Persian genes with the small, set far apart ears. It's super cute when a British cat behaves like a "puppy" and plays fetch. I was pleasantly surprised when my British Silver brought a toy mouse back to me to toss for him again. I highly recommend getting them into the habit of playing with toys early on and staying active, especially after neutering, which is when they tend to become more "lazy" and gain weight. My male British silver loves his toy mice and can keep himself engaged for hours just kicking those around. I also find that he loves hairball toys that I create from hair brushed off from himself (lol), and he loves these more than his toy mice (a little narcissist there loving his own scent!). The British is definitely my favorite breed and the kittens are just so adorable with their oversized heads and perpetual smile.
So. True. He keeps going for his hair balls hahahaha and he also loves his little mouse toys but they disappear after a few hours as they get stuck under furniture and I find them months later
I love my girl, but turning her hair brushing into toys …… ewwwwwwww…🤢 There’s toys, you know ! Lol seriously though whatever floats your (his) boat ….
Sheds a lot, calm, quite, plus by itself, ours is a one person cat, loves my wife, hates me, doesn’t like being picked up or hugged but will sit next to the wife on the couch, greets her at the door, will follow her from room to room, and will sleep on her side of the bed only, also loves a high perched cat tree.
We have golden tabby british shorthair from a rescue organisation. She is a nice little thing and gets along with our two terriers, the gecko and the old savage tomcat(alley+siamese). He is a free ranger at will, whilst she is an only indoor cat. She has no tail and is much too tusting to people to go outside.
My British shorthair kitten is an angel. She doesn’t cry too much and she has very adorable eyes. She is active and playful and is already adjusting with everyone in the family.
Absolutely right :-) I have 2 brothers, 6 months old now and they love to do everything together :-) True brothers in crime ;-) One is lilac and the other one blue :-)
I actually thought I bought a Scottish fold cause my cats ears were folded when they were young but as they grew, the ears started straightening up and I realized he was a British fold.
We got our baby shortly after we got a puppy, they have grown up together (both are three now) and they are best of friends, love to play and when the cat has enough she just goes to a different part of the house for her quiet time. Such amazing little cats.
My sister’s dream cat is the blue British shorthair. She calls them baby blue. Consequently, we drove to Darlington today to bring home a new kitten. We will name him Aiko. He is absolutely adorable, has the most tender eyes and is so intelligent. I cried yesterday and today, because we are still healing our wounded hearts. Later, we will get the Siberians to keep him company.
My British Shorthair mix (his daddy was a holy Birman) is insanely clingy and vocal. If I leave the room, he follows, he yodels and chips more than any other cat over had (except for the oriental Shorthair we got from st. Petersburg Russia, he never shut up lol)
I’ve just been adopted by a 5yrs British Blue queen. Have always had cats but NEVER one like this ! All the info in the video is right, and most importantly the not wanting to be picked up issue. She loves fuss, to the extent of happily let me pet her tummy, but she doesn’t like being picked up. Next week she has to go to the vet to be spayed, and I’m concerned about how this is going to go. She hasnt seen the carrier yet, and has never been to our vet. I’m worried about picking her up and upsetting her. Opinions ? Advice ? xxx
Put a blanket she likes in the carrier and some treats, let her walk in and out, make her relax in it a bit and give her time to rub her scent on it and "claim" the item. When traveling you can put a blanket over the carrier and make it dark so the cat doesn't freak out. A little complaining is normal but that's what you can do to prepare the trip.
@@mdw913 that’s great advice, thanks ! As she has only just moved in, she hasn’t had cause to see the carrier as yet, it’s in the spare room. I will get it out today, and get her used to it. Thankyou ! Xxx

I have a BSH, She is lovable and likes to stay on me not on other people. But what you mentioned in the vid is spot on ..... Amazing Breed which goes well with my other two cats (Not BSH). She is soundless ... Just meows (Softly) when she is really hungry and we are giving her wet food
Thanks for sharing
I have a british shorthair and can confirm that all the information (specialy on characteristics) was correct 100%
Do you happen to have breeders info? I have been searching for this type of cat & I'm afraid I will be scammed.
We purchased our boy from a breeder in Adelaide, who was an older lady. She had problems with council as she overstepped her cat numbers, and she was having health problems as well. She sold all her cats except the one or two for companions, and no longer breeds or sells.
Thank You for the information. I'm getting a baby BSH in 2 days. We are so excited!
Great for you :). And glad you found this helpful. Let me know how it goes with the baby :)
Hey there,
I been thinking about bying a Short hair cat from a breeder, I fell in love with their round cartoony face, and cuteness! This video is almost convincing me to get one 😍!
I have a British shorthair
He actually gets along great with my two cats I adopted from a shelter! They love each other and sleep all together!
These are beautiful cats
My Neptune hates cuddles, he just sits beside me and let me pet him, but when I try to hug him, he moves away lol.. He's very smart though.. took me only 2 days to train him to do high fives.. He's very quiet and only meows when he wants food, and only meows like twice lol
So sweet! They usually don't like being held, so he fits the standard 😂
I love their chonky bodies... So adorable
My british shorthair goes crazy when he is in the dark😭 he jumps at me and atracks me randomly but is also very loving
So true! Super unique cats
I like to adopt a british short hair in vancouver canada
I think BSHs do have double hair coats. My Burmese didn’t.but my BSHs fur was like my other cats’, just very soft.
Simply the best cat breed by far.
That's great. Can you tell me why two from the same liter is a better choice? Thank you.
Black Panther
@@ranapratap4650 lol true
my cat does have a strange thing with not pushing doors open in his way. he doesn't meow but chirps. he is so well behaved. he does love other kitties, he's like papa cat to our younger ones. he's loves cuddles and wants to be on my lap most of the time.
I have 3 cats and all of them are British shorthairs
One of them is grey/blue colored fur and with golden eyes she has well manners and when she bite you she doesn't hold you long just one bite and she goes away
One of them was abused by his father but when he got to our house and after 4-6 months he now has beautiful white colored fur and ocean eyes
One of them is Coffee colored fur and golden eyes and she is the most disobedient, she literally bites toes and won't get off but she is very fun to play with
Love the ones that have more Persian genes with the small, set far apart ears.
I love my girl, but turning her hair brushing into toys …… ewwwwwwww…🤢
There’s toys, you know !
Lol seriously though whatever floats your (his) boat ….
I love this breed, they have the cutest faces😊
Our British short hair loves to be picked up and held.
fr
Do they shed
@@emilie9216 no, only in the summer/spring when the sun is out
@@emilie9216 They do, but it's not bad if you comb or brush them regularly.
Lucky you ,most of them hated being pickled up and held:-/ thats what putting me off getting one ,i would love having lap cat.
My British blue is purrrfect....so chilled out.... loving but loves its space.....she walks like a model.....
Ill be getting mine soon. Cutest cat ever
My blue british short hair boy is just 6 months and loves being picked up 🤣
We just bought one the other day from a breeder and she’s such a sweetheart! Our family luvs her 🧡
Hello Brian, I’m looking for a reputable Brit breeder. Could you possibly share your breeders information with me?
My BSH's love to jump in the fridge, but otherwise this was completely on point. Thank you for the video :)
Thanks for watching!
They look like awesome cats bottom line you take care of them they take care of you I would love to get a black shorthair kitten in the future.
“The video of the British Shorthair cat is so adorable, with its soft fur and cute expressions that I can’t take my eyes off it!”
My favorite is the Golden fur coat and silver British shorthair Cat.
My Brit loves being picked up and held and sitting on me and he’s ALWAYS on my counters
What you have informed is 99% true, my cat 8mo character perfectly match your description. Thank you for sharing.
My British Short Hair loves to jump into the kitchen table and at times, will jump into the fridge. They are adorable.
💯 accurate
Just got 2 boy Brits and they r gorgeous!!!
Very good contents. It's nice to say that natural or super premium foods as well as environmental enrichment will increase your cat's life.
So many gorgeous cats great facts. I sent off for Genetic testing for my cat.
Great!
Wow! This is good!! 😊 I sure hope my British Shorthair would be this sweet! ❤️❤️😍 Keep up this great work. 👍😂
You’re right my cat is a British Shorthair.
My British shorthair kitten is an angel. She doesn’t cry too much and she has very adorable eyes. She is active and playful and is already adjusting with everyone in the family.
My British short haired is a brown and white spotty pattern and always pushes against me, also my cat has no problem with me picking her up
Idk about other British short hairs but mine is so cute and calm, she loves to eat and is a lazy pattato totally recommend getting one
I'm seriously thinking about getting one
I have two of em! 🥰 also this is super accurate my cats hate to be picked up 😂
I have a white British short hair cat he is the best, in addition to being gorgeous he is well behaved and quite
I just found your channel and am wondering how I could not have found it earlier! Really like the content keep it up(:
Thankyou ! Xxx
Mine lovessss getting picked up and will walk around your feet until you hold him
So sweet
I am going to get a British shorthair in a few hours
I have a kitten called emma , shes a mix of scottish fold and British shorthair shes 5 months old her mom is a British shorthair whom died giving birth 😭 the father is simba who is a scottish fold , pray for neyla hope you rest in piece baby girl 💖😭
sorry for your loss :(
A Chartreux, American Shorthair, and a British Shorthair, plus 2 rescues get along most of the time. My BSH gets along with all of them
I'm flying from SoFlo to pick up a Lilac BSH in NYC tomorrow and I'm watching this because I'm so excited that I can't sleep
I also have a British Shorthair. She's the best cat i ever had. She's going to be 15 and she's still very playful and energetic. She's the love of my life. We have a routine, when i go to bed, she comes and sits with me in bed until i fall asleep. She loves to be petted. I wish I could get another one but I don't think she'll like it. I love her to pieces. Loved your video so much. They are such beautiful cats. ❤
My british shorthair loved to be picked up, held, cuddled and loved to sit on laps. She liked to be held like a baby as well.
i just adopted a 4 yr old male shorthair, thankyou for the information
