@@jojoanggono3229 Only during and after the move to a new home he started to have urinary problems, it started on the last day of the move. I love my British! I didn't know I needed one in my life until I got my mine last May. He'll be 1 year old this month. Since then I've brought in his half brother who is a Scottish Straight and a female British as well. They are all so entertaining. Very independent but they have their attention seeking moments and will purposely cry for me to go find them to love on them. Lol. ❤️
@Erdf3542 I hear Scottish are usually more dependent than British but not mine. My Scottish Straight is very shy and independent. Sometimes a loner really until the Britishes are sleeping then his personality comes out. When he is ready for affection and attention, he meows until you go to him to give him lots of love and affection and playtime. He always gives eye contact and makes air biscuits during these times. I sometimes wonder, though, if he is like this because he lives in his older half brother's shadow, the British. 🤔 all in all, they are all lovely and I wouldn't trade them for anything! ❤️
My BSHs were not interested in getting into mischief. They just wanted to cuddle in bed. When I wasn’t in bed, they would wait for me or come find me and herd me to the bed. I adopted them as middle aged/senior cats, though.
@@TheCatButler They had a great retired lady as their first person. I believe her life revolved around those cats. They had been so well-loved, socialized. and catered to…I could tell. I wish I could thank her! They were the most loving cats I ever had. They helped raise my kitten, and he became little they were (only a lot more active too, throughout his life). He just passed away last Fall and I miss him! But he found a kitten lost outside and raised her for me. My last link to my BSHs! You might think I’m crazy, but one night he was sick again (he struggled with kidney disease, his last 4 1/2 years), and I woke up in the night when I heard a cat jump from the dresser to my pillow. A few moments later, I heard it jump off the bed and pad out of the room. I immediately called my two cats, and realized they were snoring and sleeping on top of me. Then I remembered my blue BSH used to hang out on the dresser all evening, then jump to my pillow at bedtime every night. The next morning, we took him to the vet and they said he had entered the terminal phase. Normally, I would have broken down but I felt almost prepared for the news. I had never believed in ghost pets or whatever, but I heard and felt a cat! And that was Chessie’s area (both the dresser and the pillow). Her sister went before her. Her best friend she left behind (sick boy, Signal) would never sleep in her spot at the head of the bed, even after she was gone. Maybe they don’t really leave us. I hope not…I would really love to see them again! For now, I’ve got the 3 year old “kitten” raised by the cat raised by my BSH pair! 💙. And they did pass down the cuddling in bed, but no one did it like my two live Teddy 🧸😻 cats.
@@sciencenotstigma9534 this was such a beautiful story, thank you for telling it. It really moved me. They truly are wonderful cats! You were an angel to them as they to you!
My cat does that too! At 9:30 she starts following me around trying to get me to go to bed... And when I wake up in the morning she is waiting to jump in and cuddle
I adopted a wonderful British shorthair boy named Sweetie. His name certainly fits! He is the most gentle, sweet, loving angel. He also absolutely loves to play with his toys and is very tolerant of my other cats. He isn't a lap cat, but he does like to sit right near his people. Highly recommend this lovely breed❤❤❤
Have owned multiple Brits, they are wonderful companions and very affectionate. I have found they don't like being lap cats since they are so large and it is uncomfortable for them. Many of mine come to me when they want to be petted and sit by me. Very independent but still social. So glad we found out about this breed 😻
Zeus, our BSH 6 m.o boy came out of his pet carrier in 3 seconds when we first brought him home from breeder. And proceeded confidently to explore every corner of our 240 square meter home. We were awed! 😂 He then jump to check every counter top without once bumping into anything. I don't know if this is common trait with BSH. Zeus would let us pick him up and hold him for several minute before complaining, but the breeder told us Zeus father is totally different, does not like being picked up at all.
Great video, I have two British Shorthairs, a Blue and a Black both with huge, bright amber eyes. I have always had cats (for over 50 years) but never previously a pedigree breed. The two I have were rescue cats and have now lived in my home for two and a half years, both being around 5 and 4 years old respectively when we acquired them from a local cat rescue centre. The Blue (Luna, or 'comedy cat') is exactly as you describe but does enjoy sitting on my lap for fuss and attention. The Black (Lenny or 'crazy cat') is more active, very vocal and likes to play. Although he clearly enjoys being near to 'his human hosts' and will sit as close as possible to either me or my wife, he never sits on laps and as with his sister endures being picked up only under protest. However, both are very affectionate and love attention, they are also really friendly towards visitors including our daughter's Great Dane who totally respects that this is the cat's domaine and presents as being somewhat intimidated by them; very amusing to watch! I am totally 'converted' to British Shorthairs and recommend the breed to any prospective, or 'seasoned' cat 'owner'; I'm not sure you ever really 'own' a cat, they merely choose to stay with you if the environment is to their liking! Arguably, the only (slight) downside to this breed is the amount of fur they shed but they are truly beautiful cats in every respect.
Thank you for the info. This is my second cat experience, first ones all passed this last year ( my partner's cats they were all old) so we just got a British short hair. Her name is Merlin a beautiful 5 year old rescue. Her characteristics and proportions are the same (chubby face too) and has the green eyes and is "marble" colored. She unfortunately does not like being held, she likes belly rubs, likes to play and is a talker. She has super soft fur too, our last cats were soft but she is super soft. Compared to the other cats we had, she is quirky. I get concerned that she lays around a little too much but I am less worried about that now that I have watched this video. We will be playing more. Thank you again for more insight on this breed.
The one thing that surprised my about my British Blue is the flat face! And after some research, they can come in either flat faced, due to their Persian ancestory, or a more "normal" cat face!
My oldest is a British shorthair and I wouldn't trade him for nothing. I love him to pieces, and he knows it and gives me the love. An awesome breed of cat👍💜😁
Yeah I can agree on some things mentioned here. This breed is not good for everyone. I have had british shorthair for 4 years. She is very independent. Doesn't like to be picked up and never sits in my lap. She is very lazy and sleeps all the time. She is like a room mate not an companion. If you are considering this breed, remember that it's not very affectionate. I still love my cat, but sometimes it feels like she is not giving me much in return🤣
I've owned and loved 3 BSH and you're not far wrong. If you want a total cuddle monster that you can pick up then this is not the cat for you. They can be very affectionate but it's always on their terms and when they want it. Despite all this I still love them for their inherent sweetness and of course stunning looks.
@@memento_momori ohh got it, good luck with moving :) when i left that comment three days ago it had been hours before i got my british shorthair cat!! he’s so perfect i love him
We got a rescue in 2017 that looks and acts very much as described here as a British Shorthair. Our Sidney Clawsby is our lovey boy. He is big. about 22 lbs and if we didn't have another cat who plays with him and gets him to run around, he would definitely be a couch potato. Also, he loves to figure things out. I always say if he were human, he's be doing puzzles.
My auntie cat is a british short hair to, but she kinda shy and i try to gain her trust(she a female) and yes its purring on me, and since it was my auntie's cat, we need to leave and i was so sad but i can'' wait to go there again❤❤❤
Cuteness to the max! 🙂 I was soooo close to getting one! My favorite color is golden with green eyes. They look quite similar to the Scottish straight, which I was also close to adopting.
@@TheNutbrittle oh no haha, Teemo and Arya is plenty of work as it is. It would be more ragdolls, or abyssinian, or somali breed I think if I decide to get another cat, but would get two cats together like Teemo and Arya
@TheCatButler Haha...True. When you care for your pets, there's no such thing as low maintenance. Yet most people want pets that are cute and cuddly, but they don't want the extra effort and responsibility that goes with it.
@@TheNutbrittle Yeah said beautifully! I usually before I get a new cat make sure I have enough money for the best food, pet insurance, health care, and time before going with a new cat.
I thought you were taking an extended break, I have my notifications for you turned on! I decided to check today just in case, so I'm catching up today. I'm a bit partial to grey cats, not bias or anything!
Oh hey Angela I think TH-cam doesn’t do a good job updating people when someone uploads. I am pretty good with having a new video every two weeks on Saturday! Teemo and Arya got dental cleaning so that video will be out soon.
Hey Kevin congratulations on adopting a cat! It does take some time for your cat to warm up to you. It took my cat Arya about 4 weeks as well. Continue to give him love and eventually he will recognize and return the favor! :)
Thanks so much for the encouragement! He at least appears more relaxed here, though still will not let me get closer than 4' from him. But, good to know this is not a lost cause. I will continue being very patient with him.
Update after 8 weeks: It has taken a lot of patience, but in the 5th week my Shorthair quit hiding and starting hanging out with me. Now, after 8 weeks, I would say he is 75% rehomed. Still a bit skittish, but always wants petted and massaged, and daily thorough brushing. I don't dare try to pick him up yet, but that is probably 2-3 weeks away. Now, he rarely leaves my side. So, the wait has been worthwhile.
I am adopting a 13 year old also from a breeding cattery. It could take months fir your xat to settle, remember everything is new to them. Tv, hoover, visitors, doorbell etc. Try a calming spray, good luck hope it works out for you both 🐈⬛
I would love to see more videos like this on more cat breeds! I’ve noticed the a lot of people considering getting Ragdolls also consider breeds like Maine Coons, Scottish Folds, and Persians! I wonder if it’s because they typically have similar temperaments or if it’s something else
Does anyone know how are they with long traveling? Like 12hrs flight couple of times per year. I want to get this cat but i would have to take it with me while traveling.
I think it depends on the cat. I recently just came back from the cat show and a lot of British Short Hairs traveled well! Ask the breeder which she thinks out of the litter would travel well.
If I may share a story with you and your viewers. A very long time ago, before man walked the Earth, man and dog lived in another realm. A wormhole to Earth opened, and man stepped through. Just before the wormhole closed, a dog jumped through to be with his master. From this point on, man and dog were linked in history together. Dog became man's best friend. As time passed, man began to farm and live in houses. Cat lived in the wild and did not interact with man. After a short amount of time had passed, man and cat met, and through a mutually beneficial relationship, man let cat stay on the land and cat protected the food supply from rodents. It was not long before a loving bond formed between man and cat. Man brought cat into the home. Cat continued to protect the food supply. When man relaxed, cat would lay on man"s lap and cuddle. Cat became family. In the time of today, man, dog, and cat reside together. Cat may not be man's best friend, but cat is family. It is common to say, "This is my dog, and this is the family cat. The family cat...
Mine is also my first ever cat and is now 2 years old. He likes to follow me everywhere and stay with me if I do something but will not cuddle or sit on my lap as described in the video. He is not a house cat and does burn fat outside however. He has never knocked anything over and is very good boy even though he was mistreated badly as a little kitten by very young children in a household I rescued him from. It is a brown tabby which along with the silver tabby I find the most attractive variant (the silver tabby features prominently on a few cat food brands here in Germany) and in my opinion should have been included in your visual reel. Like your video says he dislikes getting picked up and also is a rather quiet cat (rarely communicates). He has the very peculiar habit of curling his tail like a pug and likes to get vigorous pats on his back way more than, petting, scratching or any other firm of sign of affection from me. This video represents the breed very well in my opinion and is a great primer for what you get when going for this breed.
My son and daughter-in-law just adopted a female British Shorthair after losing their beloved ginger. We are learning about this adorable breed. Thank you for this informative and entertaining video.
I got 2 british shorthairs for 400 pounds not dollars ive had fhem for 2 days but they keep on hiding but they have started to notice the surrounding areas and they are not eating any tups on how to get them to start eating
My cat, Trapp, acts exactly like Doriyaki😂. My kitty, Trapp, looks very similar to the shorthair breed of cats but I accidentally found Trapp on the side of a road at night. I just noticed that many of Trapp’s photos saved in My Photos Gallery on my iPhone, which is my first and only iPhone ever, and I see that possibly this iPhone might have an AI(?) feature bc all pics of my cat have a label under them that I never put there that notates the image of my cat looks like an “American Shortail.” That is how I found this video so I could learn about this breed. I have to agree that Trapp looks, acts, eats, weighs, and meets the same exact identifying factors as of beautiful Dorayaki, but my cat is not from a breeder nor a pedigreed bloodline…..just a regular alley cat kitten who happened to be found alone while it’s city street mother feral cat was away, or hiding nearby watching me as I approached her little baby kitten and she might’ve been too scared to approach the new situation. (I believe that maybe momma cat was moving her litter babies across the 4-lane boulevard and this might’ve been the last one, the one I heard crying out and alone😭. Anyway, about Dorayaki opening doors! I’d be very worried if Trapp learned how to open door atw, albeit, when the door is not atw shut he has patiently figured out by carefully taking his paws and claws and putting them either in the crack under the door OR the side edge of a door not atw closed and use little cat-sized “pulls” with his paws/claws until the door is open enough for him to squeeze his big round head, and then, his shoulders until he’s accomplished the mission to freedom. I love my cat, and, he is very spoiled but not rotten all of the time, lol. Trappkitty is the very first cat I’ve ever lived with and owned in all of my 56 years. By happenstance, I found him at approx 2 weeks old beside the curb 1 foot away from the 4 lane boulevard I was driving on. While stopped at a red light, I heard something like an injured tiny animal crying or wailing out for mama. After I pulled over 2 blocks away and backtracked in the darkness, I was surprised to have located him in a large tuft of grass that was beside an old wooden telephone pole. He sat there still, as quiet as a church mouse then, and just looked up at me, with 1 eye infected and runny. As I looked back at him, the only words that came out of my mouth were “Oh my God, what are u doing out here all by yourself?” And he just kept looking up at me with “those eyes👀” that immediately and magically just grab onto ur heart and entire being and that’s when u know that no matter what, this little baby will never ever worry or want for anything ever again for as long as he lives bc he just lucked out with the winning lottery ticket to be found by someone who’s been a PETA member +20 years and had no pets or “fur babies.” I wasn’t looking for a pet bc I’m disabled plus I’ve always been highly deathly allergic and sensitive specially to cats. But Trapp has never triggered any allergies to me, nor anyone else who lives or visits us. God works in mysterious ways, and Trapp is not only a blessing in my life but he has been, by example in many ways, that proves to me that God does exist bc many collective things I’ve experienced with my cat cannot be just pure irony. Thank you for reading as I just went off subject about beautiful shorthair Dorayaki into & over sharing (lol) about Trapp and my story, but it’s very happy God Bless*m ❤🥰🐱
Good day to you, Do you know of a remote control strobe light and maybe an audible becon on a pet collar? I have seen shocking dog collars, but that is not what I want. God forbid there is a fire or Ollie gets out. It would be nice to have a 2 button remote. 1 button activates a bright strobe, and the 2nd sounds a beep. To minimise the possibility of scaring Ollie, the beep would be able to be turned off. In a smoky room, a strobe and becon may assist rescue. I have looked at making one myself, but I do not have the skill set. Perhaps you know of where I can buy something like this? I watch you video of when your kitty jumped from your bike and I drop tears. Thank you so much.
British shorthair’s personality is so different from a ragdoll’s. My cats are polar opposites. The British is so hyper and crazy while the ragdoll is so laid back and chill. The British bullies my ragdoll all day long 😂

Aww if the British short hair was more clingy and active it would be the perfect cat for me, especially considering that my m loves them more than other cats breeds😭
I adopted a stray that I am convinced is mostly british short hair. She looks like it and she has that personality. I love my little Teddy dearly. She is a real couch potato and prefers just lying on the bed with me. But she does not want to be picked up and lying on me as opposed to right beside me is a rare treat. It took many years to gain her trust. She is very well-behaved except having ran away once in the middle of a forest. She did come home voluntarily after a couple of weeks...
Thing is, I have a summer house in the middle of a forest. When I took her there the first time she just instantly left, despite my attempts at cat-proofing. And she didn't go very far, I saw her around, laying in the shadows behind the house or on a big rock by the outhouse in the evening. She was so close but she was really afraid of hands for a very long time so I knew I had no chance of catching her. I put out food for her but she didn't eat. I rigged a trap that I borrowed from a friend with chicken every day but she didn't care for it. Then one evening just as I was starting to accept that I would have to leave her there and go home, I found her inside the house. After I had closed the doors for the evening. So I just picked her up and went home.
well, mine is now 17 pounds =.= im working her hard on a diet but i think she's getting fatter rather than... that low activity, bruh... i suspect that's it. cause i have already restricted her food a lot. i have round door knobs in my house though, sucks to be her. but she is really intelligent, but rather than saying she's intelligent, i would say my cat, as korean says, have good 눈치

Hahah your BSH sound like chill loving cats :)
I have a 5 month old pedigree and he's not only adorable but completely nuts, and has a HUGE personality.❤❤❤❤
Awww thanks for sharing! Love them as well
.these cats are great! very clever cats.
@@rhyta5042 yes, I agree. Very lovable, but not big on being held long. Too chubby😁. But I just love mine to pieces.
Mine used to sit on my lap but never my wife’s.
omg she is so adorable!!! 🥺
Zeus is one confident fellow!
Have two of them a lilac male and a blue female. No regrets awesome cats.
yes! :D
The Gray Cat is undeniably the best cat out there!
Roger thanks for such a detailed experience of owning British short hair cat! Luna and Lenny sound amazing!
Most well written text I have seen in a comment section, kudos.
This is so helpful! So cute!
Glad the video was helpful! And sorry about your loss
Another fantastic video . I love all of your videos
Thank you!
The one thing that surprised my about my British Blue is the flat face! And after some research, they can come in either flat faced, due to their Persian ancestory, or a more "normal" cat face!
haha that is surprising !
My oldest is a British shorthair and I wouldn't trade him for nothing. I love him to pieces, and he knows it and gives me the love. An awesome breed of cat👍💜😁
Yes!
Our British longhair lays on me often. It’s cute. I am surprised how energetic & playful he is but he is still under a year old.
oh yeah they still a young teenager!
Well said!
I've owned and loved 3 BSH and you're not far wrong. If you want a total cuddle monster that you can pick up then this is not the cat for you. They can be very affectionate but it's always on their terms and when they want it.
Despite all this I still love them for their inherent sweetness and of course stunning looks.
I really needed this video. Thank you
Glad the video was enjoyable!
Thank you for this video! I’m thinking of getting another cat, so this video was helpful since I was thinking of getting a British shorthair

Thank you for everything
Thanks, i'm getting two of those now.
Good choice!
Cuteness to the max! 🙂 I was soooo close to getting one! My favorite color is golden with green eyes. They look quite similar to the Scottish straight, which I was also close to adopting.
Yeah they are indeed a cute breed!
@@TheCatButler Will you be getting one? 🙂
I love British Shorthairs, they have always been one of my favorite cat breeds.
2:50 sooo cute 😻
Our family has 4 BSH cats. Personalities are wonderful. So much fun. Not a lap cat, but make up for this in intelligence and will play with you.
What a great cat !
11. Shed is an understatement. Feline version of a Samoyed :-)
If I had one and saw it opening the door, I would literally cry.😭💖✨ #Cuteness
I just adopted a mature British SH being retired from a breeder, and two weeks later he still will not let me touch him. Hopefully, he warms up soon.
Try a calming spray, good luck hope it works out for you both 🐈⬛
omg I am getting one today and I can't believe how similar personality and lifestyle we have 😂
I would love to see more videos like this on more cat breeds! I’ve noticed the a lot of people considering getting Ragdolls also consider breeds like Maine Coons, Scottish Folds, and Persians! I wonder if it’s because they typically have similar temperaments or if it’s something else
Yeah I plan to!
Must be served tea time

Hello I will be getting a cat soon!
And it will be a ragdoll too! We are

I think they r adorable!!
Thanks for sharing your experience! yeah I may have missed a few color variants
My son and daughter-in-law just adopted a female British Shorthair after losing their beloved ginger. We are learning about this adorable breed. Thank you for this informative and entertaining video.
Congrats to your son and daughter in law on getting a British Shorthair! The breed is absolutely lovely haha

I got 2 british shorthairs for 400 pounds not dollars ive had fhem for 2 days but they keep on hiding but they have started to notice the surrounding areas and they are not eating any tups on how to get them to start eating
even my street cat opens door :P Also jumps on door bell every morning for food
Thank you for reading as I just went off subject about beautiful shorthair Dorayaki into & over sharing (lol) about Trapp and my story, but it’s very happy
God Bless*m
❤🥰🐱
BSH cats are so cute!
Good day to you,
Do you know of a remote control strobe light and maybe an audible becon on a pet collar?
Hey unfortunately not. I use a GPS Tracker: prf.hn/l/PJoPwQP
But otherwise sorry didn't look into this

We have found our Scottish Straight can easily open doors. She's quite clever.
British shorthair’s personality is so different from a ragdoll’s. My cats are polar opposites. The British is so hyper and crazy while the ragdoll is so laid back and chill. The British bullies my ragdoll all day long 😂

That is an awesome name! Love it!
This breed is perfect for me. How often do they need to eat though?
I adopted a stray that I am convinced is mostly british short hair. She looks like it and she has that personality. I love my little Teddy dearly. She is a real couch potato and prefers just lying on the bed with me. But she does not want to be picked up and lying on me as opposed to right beside me is a rare treat. It took many years to gain her trust. She is very well-behaved except having ran away once in the middle of a forest. She did come home voluntarily after a couple of weeks...
oh my god how did your cat come home?
@@CainXVIII wonder if it was the hunter instinct awakaned in your cat. A peculiar incident I would say, not something we expect to hear from a BSH.

These are not Shorthair British but Chartreux. British rarely come with grey fur and orange eyes.
Hey so this cat is a British Short Hair, I saw the official registration papers from the Cat Association. I am also familiar with the Chartreux breed, they do look quite similar tho.
I love their looks but $2000 for a fat lazy cat? Pound purry.
Indeed, where I live, a pedigree BSH starts from $1500, up to $4000 for exotic colour and pattern.
