  • Title: "1997 Mustang Cobra: Convertible Top Replacement on a 1994-2004 Mustang | DIY Guide"
    Description:
    In this comprehensive DIY video, we're taking on the challenge of replacing the convertible top on a classic 1997 Mustang Cobra! This is the same basic procedure for a 1994-2004 Ford Mustang. Whether your convertible top is worn out, leaking, or simply in need of a refresh, we've got you covered. Follow along as we walk you through each step of the process, from removing the old top to installing a brand-new one.
    ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is intended for educational purposes only. Working on your car can be dangerous if you're not experienced, so proceed with caution. Always consult your vehicle's repair manual and consider seeking professional assistance if you're unsure of any step.
    In this video, we'll cover:
    Tools and materials needed
    Removing the old convertible top
    Preparing the new convertible top
    Installation tips and techniques
    Testing functionality
    We used a Key Auto Top for this car. I have used both the Key Auto Top and the Robbins brand convertible top for the few I replaced. Both are a good solution. I did notice on the Key Auto Top they had a chalk line on the bottom of the top and window panel where the Robbins top did not. This is to let the installer know to line the top edge of the rear tack strips up with that chalk line. The chalk line is not necessary but does make things a little easier. On the other hand the Robbins top had center marks on the top to make installation of the main top simpler so both have their advantages. I am not affiliated with either company and this is just my observation.

    Excellent video by the way. Im lookjng to do an 03 cobra top assembly swap on my 94 but if the top isnt in good enough condition your video has inspired me to justbdo a new top myself

      They aren’t too bad to do. Just time consuming like everything else. This is my 3rd top I’ve done. One fox body and two SN95’s. The SN95 body is way easier. Going to do a 67 next.

    I have a 1995 5.0 GT Convertible and I bought a new top and I’m thinking of replacing it myself but I need to watch a few more videos like this one.

      Thanks! It wasn't too bad to do. Just takes a fair amount patience. This is the third one I've done. 2nd SN95 and 1 fox body. I think the SN95 car is easier. Going to do a 1967 next. We'll see how that goes.

    Amazing video. Not much on top replacements! I had mine done for 1600 from a shop. Love the way it came but I skimped on a new headliner. So stupid question: Can the headliner be replaced with the new top in tact?

    • @carguytroy
      @carguytroy  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Really good question. On ours the front part of the headliner and the top glued and stapled to the header bow. On ours the headliner and top had to be done at the same time. The headliner went in first then the convertible top.

    Nice video. First one I’ve found replacing the headliner also. Did you replace the well liner also? If so I missed how it attaches besides along the back. I’ll be replacing everything when I do mine also. Have had the parts for 3 years and yet to try it myself.

      Thanks! We did not replace the well liner. Ours was still in great shape. I purchased a new one just in case it got damaged while installing the top, but our install went pretty smooth.

    I had a shop replace my top a year ago and since the install ive noticed at highway speeds the top “bubbles” is this normal ?

    • @carguytroy
      @carguytroy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure what you mean by "bubbles" really. Like it fills with air like a parachute? Ours stays flat against the top bows while driving with the top up. The few I've done have all stayed flat against the top bows.

    What kindvof stapler did you use and what size staples?

    • @carguytroy
      @carguytroy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Used an Arrow air stapler that used T50 stainless steel staples. Staples were 5/16" T50 stainless steel. Have to use stainless steel staples. Regular staples will rust, stainless steel will not.

    • @theghostsofmyaddiction4471
      @theghostsofmyaddiction4471 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      5/16 everywhere? I rewatched video where you said 3/8 in back?

    • @carguytroy
      @carguytroy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theghostsofmyaddiction4471 you’re right. 3/8 in the rear tack strip that goes across the back that bolts to the rear of the car and 5/16 in the top bows. Those rear bars are thicker and can take a little longer staple. Plus there’s spots where the material overlaps and you need a longer staple anyway. I actually bought a few different sizes all the way up to 1/2 inch but only ended up using a few sizes. The tack strip in the front header bow is pretty thin. I did use a few 1/4” staples there and a few longer ones where the material overlapped on the corners. I had to kind of play with staple length to get it right. Definitely not an exact science. I’ve done a couple of these and they were both trial and error to get it right. The SN95 seemed easier to me than the fox body I did. But the fox body was the first one I ever messed with.
