    In case someone from 2024 with windows 11 is looking. Picked this up used and it works. Had to reinstall the drivers with the dock connected. Using Lenovo p14s 10th gen intel. Used the last 2018 drivers that were available.

    Yknow this channel really reminds me of those cool early to mid-2000's tech shows. Just the intro, the voice, presentation. Wish this was still more prevalent. Rather, I wish that those tech shows were still around on TV.

    I think the next innovative thing would be monitors with graphics card slot. That's the most common use case we have as of now. GPU and Monitor always stay at home and laptop travels. Why not combine GPU with monitor and eliminate the dock altogether? The monitor can have all the connectors which the dock would have.
    I'm not saying that docks should be discontinued, but integrated monitor is a good idea for most people.

    • @sebsus
      @sebsus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sounds like a good idea. Should be the next thing. Until then you could mount the dock on the screen.

    • @nexoduszerox2650
      @nexoduszerox2650 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a cool solution, BUT that could potentially ruin Nvidia and AMD's free-sync and G-sync product line up as there would be no need to include such features with a direct GPU inbuilt in a monitor like such.

    • @navidds
      @navidds 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, one reason I can think of would be monitors needing replacements at a much slower rate than gpus. I wouldnt want to replace my display just to have a gpu upgrade.

    The lack of a passthrough Thunderbolt 3 port is probably in consideration of bandwidth issues. Same with the USB2 port. Running a GPU over TB3 eats a lot of the port's bandwidth, and trying to use another high bandwidth device at the same time would harm GPU performance.

    Oh my god this .... is amazing. This product will allow me to create the unicorn of a computer I've wanted for years. Tablet based with good pen pressure, all battery, exceptional screen, portable but able to handle high level GPU tasks like GPU based rendering and gaming. So the Eve V plus this dock = unicorn for artists.

    I think you bring up a great point about the gpu and cpu being independently cooled. I have a i7 8550 w/1050 gpu and the 1050 is significantly thermal throttling when gaming longer than 30 min. It’s made even worse since i have an ultrabook with one fan that’s responsible for cooling both components. This is forcing me to play at lower than 1080p resolutions even with a decent gpu. An egpu setup is really valuable in the thermal aspect because a giant dgpu doesn’t mean much if the cooling isn’t suffient. Also, it’s MUCH easier to control thermal throttling of the cpu on games than the gpu if only 1 fan is provided, just another advantage of an egpu!

    • @Ross6041
      @Ross6041 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dont think this is a threat to desktops, it makes more sense to slot in a GPU. Gaming laptops possibly, if you want a lighter quad core laptop to plug in to this. But the latest generation of thinner gaming laptops, weighing less than 2KG e.g MSI GS65 could make a gaming laptop more attractive, than this unit with its lower powered GPU and power brick. The other issue is that they only confirm compatibility with Lenovo laptops, with non lenovo at your own risk.

    Quick update! My Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Graphics dock is working like a champ! I highly recommend you download nVidia Experience to update the GPU. Also be warned this will not work for all setups...I can confirm that it does work the on 8th gen Intel NUCs. HOWEVER setting up TB3 is an absoulte nightmare and caused many restarts, many re-installs, many firmware and driver updates...after about an hour or so of pulling my hair out I finally got it working and let me tell you it handles like a champ! THe cool thing about the INTEL NUC motherboards is that via XMP enabling you can share your systems RAM with your GPU's RAM....with 32gb setups its handling 2k at 55-65fps.

  • @DancefightTillDawn
    @DancefightTillDawn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's possible to override the laptop manufacturer's custom graphics drivers and manually push through the more recent drivers directly from the graphics card vendor. I tried this method on my Lenovo X1 Yoga Pro Gen 2 and successfully overrode the Lenovo customized Intel HD Graphics driver: steamcommunity[dot] com/app/233250/discussions/2/558749190911446231 . Now I can just update via Intel's graphics drivers directly, and haven't noticed any issues. However, as the link above recommends, you should probably have a rollback plan (i.e. making a restore point prior to the update), in case it doesn't work on your particular configuration.

    • @SweBeach2023
      @SweBeach2023 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The difference between the Ti- and non-Ti-card is not that great. Yes, it's certainly measurable but for day-to-day use the difference is negligible. Anyone needing more power than a 1050 offer can always be looking at other options, for example the Razor Core or similar enclosure offering the option to use any kind of graphics card. Yes, Lenovo could have added a 1050 Ti. And I'm 100 percent certain someone would have said in a comment "Would be nice if it had the 1060 instead of just the 1050 Ti".

    • @g.e.o.r.g.e...
      @g.e.o.r.g.e... 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They’d have to use an M model of the card if they intended on pushing it beyond a 1050ti and keeping the same form factor. There’s no way in hell you could power a desktop 1070 AND quickcharge a laptop with a power brick like that.

      all of the Intel iGPUs are creap, so any external GPU will give you an significant uplift in performance, I would recommend using a "proper" eGPU enclosure though, since you won't be able to upgrade neither the GPU drivers nor the GPU itself in that Lenovo TB Dock
