I made my own eGPU for Laptop - Basic guide!

  • In this video I made my own external GPU for laptops ( but working in some desktops as well ). The case construction is very basic and very simple made from corner aluminum, mostly used on walls, door floors, kitchens and many other places. The GPU is connected trough EXP GDC. The EXP GDC is available in few different versions, Mini PCI-E, M.2, NGFF and PCI Express. The M.2 version is different and allow using newer GPUs but not with all laptops. Also before getting EXP GD do some research because not all laptops or computers are supported and not all GPUs are supported as well.

    Actually, that case you used, was MUCH better than what I expected. I expected 3d printed plastic and rattling, but a aluminium case? Dope AF.

      Thank you bro :D aluminium is lite but strong, actually this simple, bad looking case will hold 10-12 kg mass with no problem. plastic case isn't really safe because some gpus and psu's are heavy

    This is probably the most comprehensive video I've found on building a DIY eGPU. I'm looking to build one myself (awesome case you made, btw) but for a small form factor desktop instead of a laptop. Currently, I'm not able to put a full-size GPU in the case because there really isn't enough room for good one (i'm stuck with stuff that isn't much better than the intel 650 integrated stuff). The kit you put together though, would that be the same parts I'd need to connect to a HP lubin motherboard? From what I seen it has a pcle slot, just not enough room to fit a big card.

I still own a fully functional 2006 Macbook Pro with the Core Duo T2500 processor and ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 2GB or RAM and SSD already installed. The GPU started causing glitches on the screen and the computer starts running really hot after a while. The latest OS supported is 32-bit OSX 10.6.8, internet experience is just terrible since it doesn't support newer version of Chrome and it doesn't stream videos properly. I was thinking to rework the motherboard with the newest Socket M cpu available (Core 2 Duo T7600), do you think this is a possible mod? Can I get an eGPU setup like the one in this video to work with this model through Expresscard? It would be amazing to repurpose such old tech and make it work again like a charm. Cheers and keep up with the good work!

    I'm working on a similar project for a Dell Optiplex 9030 AIO. Instead of using an external frame and power supply. I'm utilizing the internal power supply from the two internal sata power ports which originally are intended for a HDD and Optical drive.
    There's an unconventional B+M key NGF PCIE (NVME) socket which I intend to use to connect the PCIEx16 GPU. So far everything is ready bar one component. The B+M key adapter.
    I've got 2 types comming. one will convert the B+M to MiniPCIE, and the other B+M to M key NVME M.2. I've got the PCI connectors for either.
    Hopefully one or both of these will work connecting to PCIEx16 adapters (powered via the sata line).
    The last parts arrive in the next week. If it works, I'll be testing a variety of cards.
    The default graphics for the Dell 9030 AIO is the Intel HD Graphics 4600 2GB.
    I'll start with a Quadro M2000 (4gb) (Passive - No external power)
    A Radeon Pro 7100 (8gb)
    And then a 1080ti (11gb)
    If all this works I'll prob post some vids on my channel showing the part and benchmark comparisons.
    These Dell 9030 AIOs are really good value for money if you can find them at a good price.
    I picked up 4 touchscreen i5 models without stands 8gb RAM for around 50 quid each, though two had minor chips in the corners, the touchscreens are fine.
    Replaced the DVD drive with a Blu ray I had lying about, and installed sata SSDs.
    If all goes well, I plan to integrate a decent fitting GPU into the chassis with some minor modding, and if possible run the GPUS, without having to sacrifice the optical drive.
    16gb Ram upgrade cost 20 quid.
    Next step would be to test with external power supply for powered cards.

      solidpotatosalad you need the newer Mac mini with 4th gen haswell processors, you need thunderbolt 2, or the performance of the graphics card is limited

    • @NITHUNSELVAA
      @NITHUNSELVAA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cat and Andrew do you have the thunderbolt 2 or thunderbolt 3 MacBook? I have a late 2013 rmbp 13" that I use for video editing, I can only find thunderbolt 3 enclosures, and even they are too expensive!

    • @ragilmalik
      @ragilmalik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nithun Selvaa if you're connecting through thunderbolt port, the processor is not a big deal.
      if you're using pci-e slot, now that makes sense, because your gpu performance will be based on the lane bandwidth given by the cpu.

    • @ComputersAndTechAndAndrew

      right.. thanks bro ;)

    • @mattslams-windows7918
      @mattslams-windows7918 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also depends on whether your laptop has enough "system bandwidth" to handle both sending data/instructions to AND from the eGPU. Having a powerful graphics card is good and all unless it needs to send and receive info at a rate higher than what ur laptop was designed to handle.

    • @mattslams-windows7918
      @mattslams-windows7918 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In essence, if ur laptop is the bottleneck in the entire eGPU/laptop system and NOT the external dock itself or anything like that, and u find that an external monitor helps to get rid of said bottleneck, then u should get an external monitor

    • @Michael-oz8uk

Im back here to say, this was the most thorough video made. thank you for your patience. Ill be making a similar case once I get a chance, maybe include some plexi glass or honey comb style aluminum if i find some somewhere on the internets or around town. maybe even a simple wire mesh would work . i have a higher gauge aluminum angle left over from projects. will be interesting once I start.

I have a laptop(gigabyte sabre 17) which has broken GPU. (when turn the laptop on, I have nothing on the screen and it is confirm that the GPU is burn out) so thinking if this would works? Thanks in advanced...

    Its really only good as the cable speed going to the laptop. To use the full potential of the egpu you really need Thunderbolt 3.

  • @JohnnyMotel99

    I found TB PCie card in the UK for about £70. But I don't suppose the TB port is bi-directional. It does show that TB licensing is probably not that expensive.
    I think the problem with TB, at the moment, is Intel requires a licensing fee and I am sure they will want to know exactly how the TB chips are used. So if a small company wanted to create all the parts for DIY eGPU, Intel would say no.
    I guess eventually the price could come down.
