My Dad was a landing craft driver on his way to Japan when the war ended. My Uncle was first occupation forces in Japan. Another Uncle was a cook in the navy on a destroyer and his job when at GQ was to man an anti aircraft gun and pass the ammunition up to the loader because he had "good hands. My neighors' Dad was a combat engineer and went across Europe setting up Pattons'c command posts. Another kid's Dad was a navigator on B 24s and his plane took many hits on several missions. I grew up in Hamilton Ontario. My Father took me to all the airshows at Mt. Hope airport. It's now called John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is there. I always had an interest in aviation and especially the war birds. I remember when I was about 12 years old, I was playing right field in a baseball game when I noticed a Chinook helicopter carrying the fuselage of that mighty beast off in the distant sky on the way to the museum to be restored. I missed a fly ball because of that but it didn't matter. My eyes were fixed on history. They did a fine job bringing this beautiful Lancaster back to life and I love the fact that it's still flying frequently even today.

    We sit and watch these beautiful aircraft pass overhead with pride Whilst the men during the war would have dreaded climbing into them. Every time they fly above me I can’t help but think of the men that where inside these magnificent aircraft during those horrible years and what they must of thought and felt. The fear must of been unbearable. I wear my Poppy every year for those men. They are our Heroes!

    I have watched this wonderful video several times over the years, it never gets old.
    I will always regret I wasn't there to see it. The moments when the aircraft paused while taxiing and turned towards the perimeter fence to salute the onlookers was amazing. It brought me out in goosebumps and, if I'm honest, also brought a lump to my throat. Such a shame the wind drowned out most of the engine sounds - 12 Merlins are a special kind of orchestra!
    Yes, I do have a connection with Lancasters. My father served in Bomber Command from 1943 (when he was 19!), as an air gunner in these amazing aircraft. He passed away last October.

    I research Canadians Missing In Action (MIA). One of them was RCAF Flying Officer John MILLAR, a Lancaster pilot, from Edmonton, Alberta attached to 44 Royal Air Force Squadron. He piloted his Lancaster on several missions over Germany, Italy and France, and in February 1943, while leading his Squadron Lancasters on a night bombing raid on the German Naval UBoat base at Lorient, after dropping their bomb load on the huge concrete submarine pens, his Lancaster was damaged by anti-aircraft fire and was seen turning west out over the Atlantic. He and his entire crew (of RCAF and RAF ) and Lancaster were never seen again. No trace of his crew nor their Lancaster has ever been seen since.
    Surviving members of his squadron reported that Lancaster as "Failing To Return" (FTR) to their airbase at RAF Waddington. The entire crew were then reported to their Next Of Kin (NOK) as being Missing In Action, believed killed.
    Of special note, my research has uncovered the fate of his older brother Royal Canadian Engineer (RCE) Lieutenant William MILLAR. He was the officer in charge of a party of RCE "sappers" assigned demolition duties in the port of Dieppe during the fateful Dieppe Raid in August of 1942. He was captured on Red Beach in Dieppe and with other Canadian Prisoners of War, force marched away from Dieppe under heavy guard. While on a POW train from France to an Officers POW camp at Eichstadt, Germany, he and other Canadian POWs lept from the train and went on the run in Nazi occupied France until recaptured some five days later. Shipped again by train to Eichstadt, he and other Canadian Dieppe POWs escaped from a prison castle where they had been ordered held to be handcuffed daily under Hitlers personal orders. He went on the run to Austria where he was again recaptured nine days later. He was returned to the Officers POW camp at Eichstadt where his RCE engineering tunnelling training was put to use to contribute to an escape tunnel. Over 35 POWs escaped and he was again on the run until recaptured some seven days later.
    Designated as a "persistent escaper" he was re-assigned to the Germans special high security castle prison at Colditz, joining those already imprisoned there. On arrival he researched previous successful escape routes and in February of 1944, he managed a successful individual escape by hiding under a German truck which was then ordered out of the prison during an air raid. He was reported as escaped through secret POW communications with the British secret service agency responsible for Escape and Evasion (MI9), but no official record was heard of him by German military High Command nor the International Red Cross. Detailed research in the MI9 declassified wartime files and those of captured Gestapo records now reveal that once he had again successfully escaped POW custody from Colditz, he had been secretly redesignated as "a political enemy of the Third Reich" under a German secret POW order titled: "Kugel Erlass" (Bullet Decree) revealed from captured German Secret Service records in 1945. That order removed the POW protected status under the Geneva Convention governing the status and treatment Prisoners of War.
    That secret order was applied to Lieutenant MILLAR who had been recaptured in occupied Czechoslovakia by agents of the Gestapo.....the order specified that all recaptured escaped Allied Prisoners of War were to be removed from any German military custody on their recapture and immediately turned over to the Gestapo, escorted under guard to the Austrian Nazi Concentration camp at Mauthausen and executed on arrival by the camp SS staff, their bodies to be cremated and ashes scattered, their fate at the camp then reported as "having been shot while attempting to escape"......that act being a designated war crime, camp SS guards who were captured during the US Army liberation of the camp,we're all charged for war crimes against allied prisoners of war.....many were then convicted and hung. Until captured German and released MI9 records were found, RCE Lieutenant William MILLAR had joined his younger brother, John, an RCAF Lancaster pilot, as having been listed as "Missing In Action" believed killed. They are now.....remembered.

    My Dad was the bomb aimer in a Lanc 1943-45. Based at an airfield near Spilsby, Lincs. (RAF Fursby?). He beat the 50% odds of never coming back and returned to Canada, to his job in a bank and his wife and toddler son (me). This video makes me think of what he and his fellow RCAF and RAF airmen faced in those days. They were called, and they did their duty. Impossible for us these days to fully appreciate their valor. Thanks for this video which gives me an inkling of what he did.

    My farther was a wireless operator in Lancasters during the war with 166 squadron based in Kirmington. Sadly no longer with us he died in 1984 from Altzeimers said to be caused flying such high altitudes in his life. Towards the end of his life I took him to Hendon and for a brief time I had got my old dad back as he sat and stared at the Lanc or "Charlie" as he called it. I recently sold his logbook, goggles, hemet and flying missions to a collector in Canada as Hendon didn't want them because they had too many! His DFM remains with my sister. To most senior British citizens these events bring back the life we used to live in where we had values on living not lusting, where people not persessions were important. Thank you to all others who dedicate themselves to keeping memories alive and to remind us all how fortunate we are.

Over 200,000 commonwealth airmen learned their trades in the air over Western Canada. If you arrive on the right day in the summer, you’ll be there when the Lancaster comes out of the hanger and fires up it’s four merlins.

    Thanks for putting this up. What magnificent, graceful aircraft they are and flying across the Atlantic with 70+ year old engines is pretty courageous considering what could go wrong. I wonder, do they magnaflux every square inch of them? They must have accumulated some fair stresses in the main spars not to mention the chance of an engine dropping a valve or having a conrod fail!

    I live not far from Coningsby in Lincolnshire Bomber Country had the pleasure of seeing these two old lady's a few times. Pity the Lanc at East Kirkby was not airworthy, Now that would have been a sight 3 Lancaster's together.

      @soaringtractor The Irish immigrant is back after a year away, why is that ST?, been in jail, your boyfriend not letting you near the computer. Glad to see on your post, even though you didn't realise it, is the fact you have acknowledged that the Merlin is by RR and packard produced them under licence. Most UK historians acknowledge that packard produced Merlins as the UK factories were being bombed regularly and output was being affected. I suppose next you'll tell me the Mustang was an American design and fitted with a shit engine, the Allison. Even though the designers were developing the aircraft from UK specs. And what a shit plane it was until they fitted the Merlin engine to it. Likewise the P-40, a beautiful aircraft, limited in its capability, then they brought the N model out and it changed dramatically, why, because they put a Merlin in it. Your hatred of the British is childish, you must seriously get out more, being in the basement obviously doesn't agree with you. Such is life.

      @silvergtotwinturbo9984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't let soaringfracture read that you haven't labelled them as packard Merlins. Even though they were Rolls Royce designs and the British desperately needed them, but as the factories were constantly bombed the Brits needed them built by a factory well away from the war zone. They hawked the engine around all the engine manufacturers in the States and no-one wanted to touch them as they were too complicated. It took a lot of convincing to packard who eventually agreed to make them UNDER LICENCE. So they were still Merlin engines, built under licence from Rolls Royce.
