  • With the roar of four huge V-12 engines, the Lancaster bomber at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum readies for another flight. On the side of the Second World War era aircraft is the Victoria Cross emblem, honouring a Manitoba airman who was killed on a mission over France.

I was privileged to see this magnificent aircraft when she visited the UK a few years ago and toured with her sister . To see both flying together was just magical. On approach the crowd at the airfield went silent then a spontaneous round of applause went through the audience. Hopefully soon a third lanc named just Jane will take to the sky's .

Thinking of my dad as always on Remembrance Day. He flew as a mid-upper gunner on Lancasters out of Ludford Magna UK with 101 Squadron A Flight. 32 missions flown between March to September 1944. He was in the air on the evenings of 4-5 & 6-7 June 1944. I visited the village in 2015 to see the area he flew out of & visit the pub that served as his mess. During his tour half his Squadron was shot down. It was my good fortune that he survived. Also thinking of x2 Uncles who served as well. One Infantry & one navy. Lest We Forget.

Years back i worked one summer at Sharples Garden Centre, just down the road from Hamilton Airport where the Lancaster is kept. I had the privilege of seeing the Lanky fly over us at least 4 times every weekend as people paid to take a flight or as she flew to a near-by airshow. I never got tired of it. Seeing her every time is such a privilege. Even now when I hear those unmistakable engines I run out to get a glimpse of her. God bless all the men that have served our Country and those that gave their lives for us❤🌹❤.(.hmm sad to see there is still no poppy emoji)

I have seen this magnificent war bird in person. The sound of its engines is amazing. I can only imagine what it sounded like when dozens upon dozens would take off for a mission…

My dad was a Lancaster mechanic on lone to the RAF, joined when he was 17, honorable discharge in early 46. Says he went in young because that’s where the action was.

I met several veterans over the years and several of them said they grew up on farms in Ontario so they signed up to see something more interesting of the world for a change. What I also heard more than once, including from a Pole who also was from a farm (In Poland) and served as a tail gunner in the RAF, "It was the most exciting time of my life; and I never want to to it again."

Thanks to all who have helped preserve this magnificent tribute to the efforts and sacrifices of bomber command . My father once rode in this vary aircraft . He was an instrument tech on Lancs during the war . He loved these aircraft and the aircrews he tried to protect by doing his job servicing the great planes . Ontario Canada .

grandpa had 3 of the 4 blades cut bent all to hell. his tail gunner asked if we are going to drop it in the drink. he said no were going home, while he was flying at 300 feet. they then landed it and shortly after the 6 of them took a picture with the almost destroyed plane. the hull looked like swiss cheese, their were so many bullet holes. in jan 1945 he came in contact with the first jets of the war, but he was fortunate he had a great tail gunner, and managed to shoot it down. after the war he trained people how to fly. in 1950 he got a letter from Washington DC USA, even tho hes a canadian. they wanted him to fly for the US in the Korean war. the US was looking for well experienced pilots with excellent war time records.

The organization and people who restored and maintain this Lancaster have done something extraordinary for the memory of aircrews that served. I am not illiterate about WWII in the air, but it was only when I visited the inside of this Lancaster that I realized the extraordinary extent of courage that it took to fly in these airplanes in war time. Moving around a Lancaster parked on the ground is not that easy and you can only imagine with terror what it would have been like trying to escape a damaged, possibly flaming Lancaster wearing the bulky clothing and a parachute. A prospect that every crew must have pondered and yet they kept on going up there.

I live not far from RAF Coningsby, and was present when she touched down, in typical English weather. I saw her in the flesh, and when she left bound for Canada. It was very emotional to see Hurricanes, Spitfires and our own Lancaster, give her the send off she deserved. Sadly I don't think Canada gets the recognition that she deserves, for coming to our aid, when she did.

In memory of the uncle I'm named after but never knew. Another Winnipeg boy trained as a bomber navigator down the road at the Commonwealth Air Training facility. In February, 1943, he and 6 other freshly minted aircrew, Canadian and Australian, were being flown to their first posting in a Dakota, and it simply crashed near Stratford on Avon, England. They are all buried in the military section of the Stratford Cemetery.

I agree and certainly hope it will fly over CFB Borden this coming summer! I’m extremely fortunate as I live on the flight path to Hamilton airport so it flies pretty much directly over my house when it is either outbound or inbound. It’s not a quiet airplane. Still gives me chills when I think of all the Lancasters and other planes involved in Operation Market Garden. If you haven’t read the book A Bridge Too Far, I highly recommend it, and imagine the sheer volume that would have been produced by hundreds of planes of this size departing England in a very short time span. Hope you get to see the Lanc!

While attending the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the St. Catharines, Ont. Cenotaph, The Lanc did a fly-by. Two low circuits, and off to the Niagara Falls and other Niagara Peninsula ceremonies. Always good to see and hear that big old bird! A poignant reminder of the true cost of freedom.

It was a wonderful aircraft and at its best when crewed by Canadians. Cramped, uncomfortable seats and cold, Canadians, Poles and Brits, together with brave men from other nations flew this plane against flak and enemy nightfighters. We remember Canada!

My father left his war trade without permission to join the RAF as an air gunner. He was hauled into court and the judge gave the 18 year old two weeks to join up or face charges. Fortunately there was an 18 month waiting list so he joined the army. While in training depot he saw the Parachute Regiment and joined them. He fought with 9 Para in 3 Brigade alongside 1st CDN Airborne. His original unit was 156 Para so he volunteered for Market Garden. Two days before the operation he broke a leg on a training jump. Ten of his company returned from Arnhem. He spent the rest of the war back with 9 Para. My mother says the influence of the Canadians in 1st Airborne lead us the Canada. someone must of been watching out for him considering Bomber Command had 50% losses and the paratroopers at Arnhem were a “bridge to far”.

Remembering WW2 RCAF Warrant Officer Edward Spannier, DFC (of Wynyard and later Regina Sask), who was a bombardier in a Lanc over Europe on many missions. Ed died at home at 80yrs in 2000. He was a grandfather, father, husband, brother and son, and he was my friend. In 1989 This Lanc flew coast to coast, landing in Regina, and Ed was there. The Lanc was was running late, and he heard it coming before any of us. It was the first time he seen a Lanc since 1945. Rest easy Ed, you've done your duty.

At around approx 0.16 there are two flags fluttering on the Lancaster. One Australian [it seems] and the other of course Canadian.
Both Australian and Canadian air crews often served together along with the RAF personnel on aircraft.

Not often does a spectator get to see those beautiful Merlin engines ...but years ago while living in Hamilton I flew out of there & had to visit the museum (of course).
The museum was empty & the Lancaster was roped off ...there was a work platform under one exposed engine & I just had to climb up & touch it ...smell that W100 oil ...lol. I got caught & was ordered down ...but I knew by the security guard's grin ...he understood.
