I have a Veloster Turbo R Spec that I intended on flipping after replacing the bumper but ended up keeping as one of my daily cars after seeing how fun and easy it was to keep up. Makes me really want a newer N Line performance car but I don't buy things new, maybe I'll find a damaged one within reason and grab it. Stingers are pretty nice cars too, especially the GT and up trims. Shows how far Kia and Hyundai have come over the last 10 or so years.

I bought a totaled Sequoia from Copart in April and it had to have the airbag computer reset and pretensioner fixed. I sent the parts to safety restore and they got them back a week later and everything worked great.

You were warned. And he has no clue of body panel work. Or what it takes for any salvage rebuild. That car is worthless even rebuilt. Just cause u can rebuild old worthless wrecks doesn’t mean u can rebuild a late model. Rebuilds are on a tight budget to make any profit from these. Even if u manage to get it all fixed the value gonna be about 60% of what it should if it wasn’t a rebuilt title

After the module and air bags are replaced/reset. Keep that in mind if you replace every thing and still get a code. My air bags is great thoe super fast turn around.

That type of stuff on airbag and seatbelt is totally typical (as in taking a week turn around time)
Heck once upon a time, you would have to send off lots of stuff for programming. I remember having to remove my PCM and TCM for custom tune on my ‘06 Trailblazer SS. The Superchips flashpaq back then was pretty limited.
It always sucked having to wait for crap like that

In most cases, the airbag ECU will still work correctly (I.E. emit a firing pulse when crash conditions are detected) even if it's in post-deployment state and the malfunction indicator lamp is on. The main reason you don't want to just plug new airbags in is that there are recorded instances where the squib drivers have failed short-circuit after deployment and in this case just connecting a replacement airbag will result in it firing immediately. I'm not aware of any vendor that does this intentionally though.

Yeah, its not too bad, after the first one it gets easier, I've done like 10 vehicles with airbags deployed and seatbelts locked up. "My airbags" is also the place I've used for the past 3 years and only once i had an issue with a seatbelt that after being rebuilt it still didn't work. sent it back and they fixed it and all good. your airbags won't deploy if you plug the new ones without clearing the data, at least it didn't happen to me in two trucks i fixed when i first started and forgot to take the module out..you just won't be able to get your airbags to work and light will stay on.

I like working on newer car for the same reason (Also, thank the engineers for OBDII!). Side note: I so need to save up and get an impact driver like that!
Semi-related question. People (not mechanics) have said there is a "black box" that records the state of the car when a crash happens. I have never seen a box like that in the newer cars that I have (2011 Corolla, 2016 Volt) - are they just talking about the airbag controller or something else? If it's there, how would I find it and read it?

Don't get the seat belts rebuilt. The webbing will have been stressed by the pre-tensioners deploying, regardless of whether the belt was being worn at the time or not, which means that, if the car is involved in another collision, it may fail, which could be catastrophic for anyone in the car. Just replace them. Seat belt webbing is a one crash and replace item, just like harnesses in competition vehicles...
The joy with the air bag module being permanently written when the system deploys and the air bags themselves being coded to the vehicle's VIN is all pretty standard in more recent vehicles. Air bags are pretty highly-prized and -priced but they're useless to anyone unless they have dealer-level diagnostic equipment now, so it's another of the anti-theft systems built into modern vehicles. Back in the '90s it wasn't unusual for vehicles to be stolen specifically to take the air bags out of them to sell on, and a lot of vehicles got written off specifically because of that due to new air bags being so expensive...

JR, looks like a nasty burn on one of your arms. Hope nothing went too wrong there.

That's probably about as bad as being burned. Poison oak/ivy is nasty stuff.

Send the module and seat belt to Safety Restore. Goonzquad has been using them since they started rebuilding cars.

The price on ebay for Safety Restore is $10 cheaper than their website. It was $40 for the SRS module for my 2009 Honda Civic and $50 for each seatbelt. I paid $10 shipping. My passenger seat belt worked for about 1 month and then locked up, so I had to send it in also. I bet the Optima will need the passenger seat belt fixed also.

If I could work on the Kia with Watch JR Goes and 100 percent Jakes I would roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.

7:40 my 1988 Buick has like 40 bolts and screws holding just the center console in. The dash has about 50 more, and an entire dedicated wiring harness. New cars are WAY easier.

Does the airbag module have to be re-programmed whenever there is an airbag deployment?
