THE FIAT 500 IS DEAD, Long Live The FIAT 500 *Motul Fluid Change*

  • Life support for a car that needs it, my Fiat 500 Abarth has been a ton of fun. I bought it sight unseen, flew to Tennessee to pick it up, drove up and down the Tail of the Dragon in it, then drove it a handful of times once it was back in KS. In that handful of times I've done a ton of work to it and today is no different. We're doing a complete fluid change to Motul, and talking about Fiat cancelling the 500 in the US. It won't be long until they pull the plug entirely. I sold mine, now we can say goodbye to Fiat. Thanks to ‪@100PercentJake‬!

    When you pour oil, the handle goes down. It pours smoother and doesn’t “glug.” That’s why it’s shaped like that. 😉

    Theres a trick to getting to the oil filter. You have to put the long extension through a gap in the hood, put the socket on the extension AFTER you put it through the whole and then you have perfect access

    ABOUT THE SPECIAL SOCKET FOR THE DRAIN PLUG
    Just take a cheap 12mm hex bit socket and use a vice to pop out the hex bit from the socket. There's a hole in the socket where you can hammer out the bit with a punch. After that, just use a 10mm wrench on the part of the bit that was inside the socket to break the drain plug followed by a ratchet wrench to remove it much faster.
    Once you're done draining the fluid and reinstalling the drain plug, hammer the hex bit back into the socket and reuse it on the fill plug.
    Learned that last night with the help of an experienced mechanic!

    For people making fun of the check engine light, JR said it's p0420... Of couse it has that, because the car has a DECAT pipe. That has nothing to do with it being a Fiat. Any car will throw a code if you remove the catalytic converter. The code can be deleted in a tune, but he hasn't done that.

  • @ShinyRedGrapple
    @ShinyRedGrapple 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey JR, I wanted to vent to a car guy.
    I have been inspired by you everyday to get up and into the garage during quarantine to work on my car.
    I hit a major road block today, because after I spent literally thousands of dollars on getting it running great and interior, (should have done interior last, but whatever) the paint shop that specifically told me that would "LOVE" to work on my car, now told me that they don't want to do my car because they suspect it has too much rust. (california car, garaged for years). They wouldn't even want to sand blast it first, because it sounds like they don't want to do my car at all. All the other paint shops I called so far keep pushing me away, because it's a 1970 car. I really don't have the facilities or time now that i'm back to work to do the body work correctly myself, and my budget is only $6k. I will try to figure this out, but my dream of driving my girl in it to a car show in August are out the window...
    Anyways keep up the good work and your positivity always keeps me hopeful

    • @JustinLaNoue
      @JustinLaNoue 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What kind of car? Sounds like you may need to save a little longer and seek out a classic shop somewhere around you. I know most regular body/paint shops don't work on cars that old because they'd rather pop out 5-10 year old cars quickly. But, I guarantee you will spend more than $6k on a 1970s paint job if you want it really well done including fully stripping the old paint off and potential small rust repair. Good luck though I hope it turns out awesome!

    • @ShinyRedGrapple
      @ShinyRedGrapple 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @JustinLaNoue
      @JustinLaNoue 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vince34 Well definitely try to find a custom/classic shop in your area and see what they say. Quoting on older cars is very hard but obtaining a solid ball park and finding someone who you can talk to about it would be the best way to start. Here in Oklahoma, for instance, there are a few great classic car restorers and builders around you just have to search their shops out.

    • @AlvinBrinson
      @AlvinBrinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to classic cars. Lots of shops refuse to work on anything that's not "new". They will also refuse if it looks like you're a car guy, if your car has any mods, or is not a common car. Basically the majority of shops are out there to maximize profit per hour of labor and anything that even resembles "project" or any work they don't do in an assembly line way they will flat turn down. You may not think so, seeing them have custom cars, etc, in the bay and driveway, etc. But if you pay attention those cars stay a long time. They usually belong to employees, to the owner, or their friends. Not regular customers.

  • @AlvinBrinson
    @AlvinBrinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My opinion is that the multiair filter change is not needed as normal maintenance. I have heard of some being clogged but it usually happens if you've had oil contamination to begin with. With proper maintenance they should never be clogged. I run the Broken Fiat Club on facebook and I see people recommending the multiair filter all the time, and honestly I don't support changing that unless you're having issues with oil codes from the multiair.

    • @WatchJRGo
      @WatchJRGo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This EXACTLY. If you have a reason to change it (oiling issues, a CEL related to multiair, metal present) go for it. If not it’s just a waste of your time, the filter will be perfect. 🍻

    It's a shame that Fiat is leaving the US, but most of the cars shared platforms with jeeps anyway.
    I was one of the few people to buy a 500 Turbo instead of the Abarth in 2013. It's a fun little car, but I'm getting rid of mine because I need to go on long trips for work frequently. The uncomfortable seats and small gas tank make it terrible for that.

    No need to get angry, but please, take a read on that @watchjrgo.
    Do you remember how much is important filter and o-ring for the VTEC Engines? Maybe you have to change it once or twice into the lifetime of the car, but the MultiAir is quite... Different than VTEC or VVTI from Toyota.
    It hardly relies on oil specs for intake valve lifting and timing, so using the correct oil, make it lasts what it's meant by the manufacturer and keeping it clean it will dramatically change the behavior from top engine performance from lacking of torque and drive/power.
    Don't forget to tell the ECU "hey buddy, new oil" and... Remember that if there's not enough oil into the engine, the car may *refuse to start* for avoiding intake valves or piston head damaging.

    What was the selling price and the mileage?
    And how much did you spend on replacement parts? 😁
    BTW, I recently bought a 2015 Abarth, stock and fully loaded, new 17 inch Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires, 43,000 miles (69,000 km) for $8,800 USD ($11,950 CAD). Only had minor fender benders at both ends 14 months apart which caused the previous owner's insurance to shoot way up! 😁 The dealer that sold it to me did a decent job of prepping it up. It does have surface rust around the wheel assembly components, but that's what happens when you daily drive just about anything in Canada. I might have to replace the ambient air temperature sensor, but I can do that with less than $10 worth of parts instead of replacing the right mirror assembly (the stock sensor is a piece of crap). Will install a Neu-F torsion bar for more stability.

    I thought brake fluid is changed not because it looks dirty or anything like that, it's actually changed regularly every about 2 years because it absorbs moisture and loses effectiveness and can cause corrosion in the brake system. So even if 2 year old brake fluid looks clean and clear, it must be changed.

      They did it to themselves...it's sad. Decent products this time with the 124 and 500 and actually reliable Multiair engines. Awful dealers and over-pricing. I was hoping Alfa would pick up the 124 and make it a touch nicer, but no.

      As a former owner of a'74 Fiat 128 wagon, '77 131 2dr, '81 Brava 2dr, '81&'82 Strada, and now for 29 years a '75 124 Sport Coupe I can definitely agree Fiat dropped the ball on the American market. Quality, reliability, and longevity mostly absent. As a high school student the library had a large book of all the worlds cars produced up to 1968. In the Fiat section were small rear engine cars highly tuned by Abarth at factory with 147 hp and a top speed of 147mph. That same book also showed a Ford Galaxie 500 with a 7 liter motor doing, guess what, the same top speed of 147mph! So with most Italian cars it's always been about the motor. Also something most people aren't aware of is that most of older Fiats rusted because of low(at the time)quality Soviet steel used in production. The 124 I still have I baby a lot and keep as dry as possible. Fortunately it was rust proofed when new by previous owner. Has small rust spots, small rust through behind RF tire otherwise very solid, shift and clutch still very good, twin cam revs to 7000 easily, still a blast to drive. Timing belts, brakes, etc I do myself. And definitely put solid state ignition on older cars. they run so much better. Peace.

    I always hated the way they designed those engines. It was quite a pain in the ass to replace the damn alternator to the point where I had to dig a trench in my backyard just so I could work underneath it! You have to pretty much take off the front suspension just to get it to fall out nicely too. Smh!

    I hope Mopar never back out of the european market. Oh, besides Jeep there is no "official" Mopar in europe. Thankfully there are a few dealers who sell Dodges and Rams and all that lovely cars in Germany and thankfully I'm employed by one of them. I just worked on a 500 Abarth as well, I think it was the worst car I ever worked on. But it was a pleasure to drive...

    You can buy a new fiat 500 for as little as 70 dollars a month on 0% finance here in the UK. They sell like hot wheels here. My daughter loves hers I cant stand those new 500. i want to rebuild a proper old 500. They are really cool.

      if gas cost as much as you pay for petrol, they would have sold well here also. it was down to $1 a gallon in some states. doing the math in my head that is about 40p a liter

    Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the u.s. spec 500's made by Zastava in Serbia? Zastava also manufactured yugos (Also a fiat design) so technically, Fiat 500's are Yugos.

    • @AlvinBrinson
      @AlvinBrinson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the US spec 500s were made at the FCA plant in Toluca, Mexico.
      The 500L was made in Serbia.
      The 500X I think was Italy.
      But the L and X are crossovers, not the same as a 500 at all.
      And for those saying the 500X is a rebadged Jeep? Couldn't be more wrong. It was a purely Fiat design, and the Jeep Renegade is more a rebadged Fiat. Fiat has a history of making small capable 4x4s long before they bought Jeep.

    • @philmakris8507
      @philmakris8507 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that the Renegade is a rebadged fiat, I wasn't suggesting it was a jeep design.

    Pick up one of these Abarth used,they are fun and peppy.
    Abarth might have their own designs.....although electrics......it’s the future! Too bad.
