It's by far more shit and certainly not reliable enough for a daily driver! It's too impractical, too small and it looks.... well, it looks like a fucking dull Renault! Hail Porsche!
For me, I just don't think you can put a price on weight reduction. Just a small tweak to the Alpine (if you were so inclined) and the difference would be dramatic. The Porsche is really heavy, considering it's a two-seat sports car! and makes you feel a little more isolated from the action. Put a 6 pot in the A110 and you'll have an absolute RIOT of a car.
to be honest, if the Alpine had the option of a manual gearbox, i'd choose it even over the Cayman GT4, as it just looks spectacular and sounds great (for a 4cyl engine) and it looks like it's a lot of fun to drive (particularly "normal" twisty roads). it would easily be my "attainable dream car", and i say that as a huge Alfa Romeo and Porsche fanboy but all things considered, the lack of a manual in such a drivers car is absolutely inexcusable, and for a little more money than a Premiere Edition, i'd rather have a last gen flat6 Cayman S (or with a bit of luck and searching even a GT4), or a 997.GTS, as they're better cars in every single way except maintenance and fuel cost. or, hell, even a Lotus Exige, which is just as light and nimble, but it has a delightful V6 engine (sounds MUCH better), is much more powerful and has A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, like a driver focused car is supposed to it's absolutely insane there's no third pedal option in there (and please, spare me the "dsg is lighter" PR bullshit. it's not) they completely missed the point and the boat by aiming for Cayman sales, just like Alfa with the 4C. next to nobody who buys base Caymans because they're great drivers cars, most people buy them because of the badge and the perceived luxury, that's why they're mostly sold in auto form (unlike the bigger GT4 brother, which is even more of a driver's car...). the Alpine, like the 4C before it, can't compete with it in those segments, not even close. they should've aimed to be upmarket, midengined Miatas, 5-10k cheaper base prices and a manual option and both would've sold like hotcakes
Sounded like one of them was brainwashed and biased towards German cars and could not explain convincingly why chose Cayman over Alpine. I thought Alpine Rocked!!!
Don't worry, it is happen to me with some brands (Apple, Dyson etc...) Nothing wrong with enjoying a car for subjective reasons. I love the De Lorean, and it is a shitty car and barely drivable.

@@stevenrix7277 Here in Europe is quite easy you just have to download the alpine app from the Google play store and then choose a dealership and configure yur car
Amazing that a maker of front wheel drive shopping trolleys can emerge from a forty year slumber and challenge the everyday/trackday crown of the Cockster.
Personally I love both cars. Porsche made a great choice using the 4 cyl engine because it gives the car more power at low speed. the base 718 Cayman is faster than the old Cayman S, better running costs. It has a worse sound but the engine is more usable at low speeds and in the end the 718 is a greater car than the previous in every aspect but the sound. Besides if Porsche survives it's thanks to downsizing and électrification. The Alpine is great. Super light, relatively cheap, fast, comfortable and with low running costs. The steering and the gearshift are not on Porsche level but the car is so light that it makes UP for it. Should Alpine give the car a différentiel autobloquant, more power and a sportier setup it could beat the base Cayman on a track and maybe reach the Cayman S. The thing is: Cayman will go on and it will get better at every génération because it's a Porsche. Will the future of the Alpine be as bright ? It depends on how successful it will be.
Sadly heel and toe will never be a problem in the Alpine...to me they got this lack of manual option completely wrong (albeit I know their marketing did the sums and this was the result either right or wrong...) which is a shame because chassis wise, technically the Alpine has got the Porsche licked albeit there is a price to pay in terms of boot's space. And this is not even talking about the weight...a field where Porsche slipped off the tracks for a while now. Maybe it is the price to pay for a better build but in my opinion it is just the price that their chosen luxury route has taken them into, completely detracting from what a sports car should weight and the fact that some Lotus Exige versions are nudging 1200Kg nowadays (who would thought!!! Heresy...) just shows how well did Alpine get this right. A really difficult choice in between a base PDK Cayman and an Alpine but whoever chooses the latter will have chosen the purer car. Me? The manual box available on the Cayman would make it a no-brainer and besides Alpine (like Lotus) has been too optimistic with its prices...first they need to re-build the brand, get some reputation and credit and then they can claim it back. But starting pair on prices with a brand as well established as Porsche's is difficult to stomach. And to match Porsche's network is another completely different task albeit my experience with them has got plenty of bad examples, unfortunately, to the point I would have trouble to recommend a OPC if someone was going to ask me...Lotus could have a much higher share of this market if it was not for their price optimism as well and countless versions of the same car. One last thing: it is a well known fact Alu is very difficult to repair once the damage on the chassis is past a certain point so something to bear in mind re the Alpine. PS to the reviewers: according to my experience pedal brake feel is variable (across their cars and range) and most OPC techs (they are not mechanics any more are they?...) get this wrong (in my case at least). However if you insist with them that you don't want any break pedal dead travel feel, at least some if not all techs, will do this for you. It is something I got tired from having to ask (when I should not) but if I ask likely I will get it
The A110 is the perfect addition in a enthusiast's two car garage. Fun/gallon wise it is hart to beat. I am an old petrolhead and own the A110GT since two months. Over the last 30 years I had a number of second (fun) cars, including five 911, one Boxster GTS, one Ferrari California T and for pure driving fun on public roads I prefer this French interpretation of a true sports car. Every Cayman and 911 owner should go and test drive one. For a single car garage the Cayman or base 911 would be the better choice simply because of trunk size.
Both very special and different cars. Strange comparison, in my view, though. I think no potential Porsche buyer would consider the Alpine, and possibly it is the same for the Alpine potentials. I looked at the Cayman and definitely prefer the manual transmission base model with only two options..... colour and cruise control
Haha All the Porsche, Cayman haters on here probably have never even driven a Porsche of any kind I love Alpine, I had an Alpine GTA for 7 years but I now drive a Cayman S, one with a 6 cylinder engine though! And it is easily the best, driver focused car I have ever owned, it makes me smile every time I drive it, it is bloody awesome 👍
I've driven several Porsches and I still say Alpine over Cayman despite never having driven any Alpine. Understanding design and engineering all I need is to look at the Alpine's body shell, suspension deisgn and the scale of it all. I might call the Alpine the only true sports car sold today. Yeah there existed the Alfa 4C but typically where the Italians fail with cars, the French succeed as we can see once again from the new Alpine.
@@varmastiko2908 I'm not going to knock the little Alpine because I do like it and would love a go in one, all I was saying is the amount of Porsche haters out there, which mainly comes from people that have never driven one and especially not driven one for a long time to truly understand just how good they are, build quality, reliability, little depreciation and fantastic sporty drive, especially with the Cayman range, old or new
I feel the guy in checkered shirt was more coherent. The other guy said the Cayman to be more involving in the conclusions, while at some point during the review he said something along the lines of the Cayman not caring about what you do, about giving the driver the feeling of always being the weak link, while the Alpine according to him always encouraged him, always gave him a sense of accomplishment as a driver, yet he thinks the Cayman is more involving... Make up your mind, mate. I think unconsciously he liked the Alpine more, but was for some reason biased for the Porsche (German fan boy? Who knows?)

Alpine for people who want to have fun with a sport car and enjoy the art of cornering fun in all conditions. The Porsche is more suited to people who like to drive on freeways or wide roads, and who want to show off their social status.
Great video! How about a 981 Cayman vs the Alpine? Does the 6 banger make the older car still compete? Also, where in Wales was this? The hills in the back look familiar in the end shot.
Much appreciated - glad you enjoyed it! Really good point, that. We suspect the six-cylinder Cayman would be more than a match for the Alpine if you’re not keen on the engine sound of the current model. It was filmed just outside of Crickhowell in South Wales.
The Porche Cayman is made for US highways, German autobahns and racetracks, while the Alpine is made for European winding roads, the Mountain and historically rallies. We are not dealing with the same category, and it shows in profile when they are side by side like at the end of the video..
The Alpine just grabs your heart strings and now you can get a Litchfield Stage 1 or 2 retrospectively fitted, it even out drives the Porsche Cayman too 🚙🇫🇷💙👍🏻
not even close, the Alpine is the real deal, especially considering it's considerably longer/more significant history. A road Porsche is a 911 and alway will be, except their SUV's these days, which bring home the $$ and sales volume.

I want to like the Alpine, but they make it hard for you. Only 250hp when the same engine in the Megane RS is 275. And the wiper stalk and radio control stalk look exactly the same as the 2003 Clio I used to own.
Do you think the Alpine needs to do zero to sixty in less than 4.5 secs? I don't. Hence no need for more power (the Megane does need it with the huge body it's hauling; hence it has more power). And what's wrong with the Clio wiper stalks? Parts sharing is a good thing - for reliability, for upkeep costs and for future parts availability.
do you know that Michelin had to degrade the performance of the tires of the alpine, because there was too much grip, so the combination chassis / undercarriage / tires are perfect ... in France 1 year of waiting, 60 000 €. .. how much the Porsche??

In reality, every Porsche on average gets 10K of customisations, and Porsche's menu for that in colours, materials, quality and choice does not exist anywhere else, even if you only look at the paint options, and then you have the resale value of a Porsche, so if you really had to make this decision in real life and not as a drooling comment on a TH-cam video, then this isn't even a contest and the Porsche wins hands down.
You can resale Alpine much more than base price... no comparaison for this point Alpine win. In japan 1200 people apply to get a first edition Alpine.. only 25 avalaible....In France 2 years delay to get one... I let you imagine the price you can sell it if you have one.
And what do the ones cost that anyone can buy, the ones we are obviously talking about here? Btw, a regular Boxster/Cayman can already cost tens of thousands more than a Limited Alpine, if you make the right choices when ticking the boxes for your order...
Sports cars are meant to be driven, not sold. And when the time does come to sell it, you will still remember you paid 25k less for it in the first place...
Who says Porsches are not being driven? It is absolutely a drivers car and that is what people do. You cannot compare storing away a limited edition GTx car with daily drivers like the Cayman or any 'regular' 911... And when it comes to sell it, right :) No, then you would not remember that you paid 25K more in the first place, because that would not be what would have happened in the first place. What would have happened is this: Alpine costs 48K Pounds (250 hp) Cayman (300 hp) 43K (manual) or 45K (PDK). So you can throw in another 5K in options (or 7K in case of the manual) and would arrive at the same price as the Alpine - pretending that it would cost 25K more is ridiculous ;) So they are very close in price, depending on your hunger for options, of course, and going from there, the Porsche will have a better resale price... And btw, it should be obvious what to do for all those people who bemoan the lack of a manual transmission here... *wink-wink* the Cayman has one... just sayin' ;) It happens to be an excellent manual, too.

Jeff Kodiac i like the fact that not everyone drives a porsche or bmw. But ill still have a porsche or bmw hahahaha
The Alpine is by far more fun. Still after 2.500km driving it you come out of the great seats with a smile.
It's by far more shit and certainly not reliable enough for a daily driver! It's too impractical, too small and it looks.... well, it looks like a fucking dull Renault!
Hail Porsche!
I am German.... you fucking idiot! Lol!
For me, I just don't think you can put a price on weight reduction. Just a small tweak to the Alpine (if you were so inclined) and the difference would be dramatic. The Porsche is really heavy, considering it's a two-seat sports car! and makes you feel a little more isolated from the action. Put a 6 pot in the A110 and you'll have an absolute RIOT of a car.
throw in the weight of a convertible if so
Brain - Porsche, heart - Alpine
ILIJA1993 yes and regarding sport cars heart is more important 😊
to be honest, if the Alpine had the option of a manual gearbox, i'd choose it even over the Cayman GT4, as it just looks spectacular and sounds great (for a 4cyl engine) and it looks like it's a lot of fun to drive (particularly "normal" twisty roads). it would easily be my "attainable dream car", and i say that as a huge Alfa Romeo and Porsche fanboy
but all things considered, the lack of a manual in such a drivers car is absolutely inexcusable, and for a little more money than a Premiere Edition, i'd rather have a last gen flat6 Cayman S (or with a bit of luck and searching even a GT4), or a 997.GTS, as they're better cars in every single way except maintenance and fuel cost. or, hell, even a Lotus Exige, which is just as light and nimble, but it has a delightful V6 engine (sounds MUCH better), is much more powerful and has A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, like a driver focused car is supposed to
it's absolutely insane there's no third pedal option in there (and please, spare me the "dsg is lighter" PR bullshit. it's not)
they completely missed the point and the boat by aiming for Cayman sales, just like Alfa with the 4C. next to nobody who buys base Caymans because they're great drivers cars, most people buy them because of the badge and the perceived luxury, that's why they're mostly sold in auto form (unlike the bigger GT4 brother, which is even more of a driver's car...). the Alpine, like the 4C before it, can't compete with it in those segments, not even close. they should've aimed to be upmarket, midengined Miatas, 5-10k cheaper base prices and a manual option and both would've sold like hotcakes
The Alpine AS 110 will have manual gear box, with 50 kilos less than the Premiere Edition and with a 320HP engine.
@@Ken_Marinaris Loupé ! :-)
Alpine vs Lotus?
Now that sounds like a fun day out...
The Alpine makes always a big smile to appear on the test driver's face 😊
Sounded like one of them was brainwashed and biased towards German cars and could not explain convincingly why chose Cayman over Alpine. I thought Alpine Rocked!!!
Agreed, he couldn't like it. Because of the branding effect of the Porsche. It is a cognitive biais, same effect with Apple products.

Rubbish!

Don't worry, it is happen to me with some brands (Apple, Dyson etc...) Nothing wrong with enjoying a car for subjective reasons. I love the De Lorean, and it is a shitty car and barely drivable.
Can't find the ALpine in the US :S And it's a limited production otherwise i would buy one (I also own a Cayman S). Bon sinon les Francais savent encore faire des voitures xD
Only the premier edition is limited. You can buy a110 pure or a110 legend between 50k and 55k but I don't know if they sell them in the USA.
No they don't SIGH.
@@stevenrix7277 Well the car has been in production for like 5 months so maybe next year it will be available
It might be next to impossible to get one. In the 70s they were producing the Alpine A310 and only 10000 models were produced with different variations.
@@stevenrix7277 Here in Europe is quite easy you just have to download the alpine app from the Google play store and then choose a dealership and configure yur car
Amazing that a maker of front wheel drive shopping trolleys can emerge from a forty year slumber and challenge the everyday/trackday crown of the Cockster.
mf ghost episode 4
It is something I got tired from having to ask (when I should not) but if I ask likely I will get it
Porsche is for the yuppies, and Alpine for the gentlemen drivers!!😀
Can we all agree the alpine is our winner anyway.
For everyday use - The one you’d buy is the Porsche but of course the better CAR is the Alpine
For a single car garage the Cayman or base 911 would be the better choice simply because of trunk size.
fcking love small channels, it feels like they're always watching what you do on their channel. Great review guys and great cars you got there. (:
Glad you enjoyed it, plenty more to come in the next few months!
" ... but this is largely the same ... " and then goes on to list where the GTS is NOT the same.
From what i see i think Alpine is beautiful to drive it
Both very special and different cars. Strange comparison, in my view, though. I think no potential Porsche buyer would consider the Alpine, and possibly it is the same for the Alpine potentials. I looked at the Cayman and definitely prefer the manual transmission base model with only two options..... colour and cruise control
Great items thanks lads
Cheers Robert, glad you enjoyed.
Gts has the same 265/235 as the S and base.. as did the 981’s. The track is 12mm wider each side in order to get the engine in.
Haha
All the Porsche, Cayman haters on here probably have never even driven a Porsche of any kind
I love Alpine, I had an Alpine GTA for 7 years but I now drive a Cayman S, one with a 6 cylinder engine though!
@@varmastiko2908 I'm not going to knock the little Alpine because I do like it and would love a go in one, all I was saying is the amount of Porsche haters out there, which mainly comes from people that have never driven one and especially not driven one for a long time to truly understand just how good they are, build quality, reliability, little depreciation and fantastic sporty drive, especially with the Cayman range, old or new
Quality of content deserves way more subs!
Much appreciated, we’re getting there!
Who knows?)
I think it's a shame the Alpine isn't a tad more practical and isn't available as a manual.
Alpine all the way. I have zero interest in a 4-pot Porsche (I know that the Alpine is the same but that's by ground up design and way lighter)
The alpine just looks way sexier
Alpine Is much better than this annoying Porsche.
And you compare A110 with GTS cayman 370HP... you’have to compare it to standard cayman.
Renault makes fun sports car, simple one in a sense and cheaper, but really fun and lightweight.
Agreed, it’s a brilliant sports car 👍
I have a 2007 Cayman S and that will do me nicely, thank you 😁
I wonder how much the Alpine will keep its value after 2-3 years? P.S. At least one of you pronounced Porsche correctly!
18 month waiting list if you order an Alpine today. The ones I've seen for sale on the second hand market are above the sticker price, so I think resale value on short term is OK.
As usual with Alpine the value will increase over time, it's already the case.
I wished they would import it to the US.
Alpine for people who want to have fun with a sport car and enjoy the art of cornering fun in all conditions. The Porsche is more suited to people who like to drive on freeways or wide roads, and who want to show off their social status.
Alpine the best 👍🇫🇷💪
Great video! How about a 981 Cayman vs the Alpine? Does the 6 banger make the older car still compete?
Also, where in Wales was this? The hills in the back look familiar in the end shot.
Much appreciated - glad you enjoyed it! Really good point, that. We suspect the six-cylinder Cayman would be more than a match for the Alpine if you’re not keen on the engine sound of the current model.
It was filmed just outside of Crickhowell in South Wales.
A110 > Cayman
You didn't put their on road prices.
Porsche 718 Cayman starts from £42,897, while the GTS starts from £59,866. Alpine A110 starts from £46,905. All UK prices.
The Porche Cayman is made for US highways, German autobahns and racetracks, while the Alpine is made for European winding roads, the Mountain and historically rallies. We are not dealing with the same category, and it shows in profile when they are side by side like at the end of the video..
Love the alpine
The Alpine just grabs your heart strings and now you can get a Litchfield Stage 1 or 2 retrospectively fitted, it even out drives the Porsche Cayman too
🚙🇫🇷💙👍🏻
No mention of mpg? If we are talking daily drivers...
not even close, the Alpine is the real deal, especially considering it's considerably longer/more significant history. A road Porsche is a 911 and alway will be, except their SUV's these days, which bring home the $$ and sales volume.
The porsche😍🥂
I think you forget materials and build quality, as that would be the biggest difference between two cars
sounds like the caymans for the more talented driver because it can do more..yes would have been nice to get the lower spec'd cayman. Thanks for the vid guys.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Be sure to subscribe for more reviews, twin tests and motoring advice!
The A110 is a fantastic drift car in GT7. :D
Porsche is by far the better car in every way, nothing beats a cayman
The letters "GTS" are missing from the video title.
Anybody else watch GT4 (Blancpain/ FFSA) just to see "Little Mac"(A110) punching above his weight?
Guys, come on! When you are comparing two things, one is better not best! Basic schoolboy grammar.
I looked at both....wanted a manual and prefer NA......bought a 981 GTS......that flat 6 makes it better than either of these, for me
I wouldn’t listen to anyone who leans on cars like you guys do
James Dennison is Casey Stoners doppelgänger ! 😄
Which is BETTER?
Anyone, both or none. It depends what do you want in a car, your preferences, use, bill.........
do you know that Michelin had to degrade the performance of the tires of the alpine, because there was too much grip, so the combination chassis / undercarriage / tires are perfect ... in France 1 year of waiting, 60 000 €. ..
how much the Porsche??
A110 looks like a cross between Audi and an Aston Martin.
They are both sports cars. So race them with the equaly horse powered engines. The Alpine is a true sports car. Much ligther than the Cayman. I would like to see them both competing in Top Gear. That would be fun.
I have a 987.2 Cayman 2.9 - I would certainly chose the Alpine over the 718 - In addition to my current car. And I think it does sound better than the 718.
good luck getting your hands on an Alpine
Nice video, but please consistently pronounce Porsche properly
please

We can't buy an Alpine here in Canada. I'll continue to enjoy my GT4.
If it was my money, I'd have the Cayman. If it was someone else's money, I'd take the Alpine.
we need more competition to Porsche!
Running costs should be better with the Renault I guess
Jolly Good Show Chaps no seriously
That Cayman sounds like a Toyota GT86. Let it sink in for a while. A Porsche that sounds like an economy Toyota.
“Junk of Renault?” You really are jerks of england
I wouldn't take it too personally (assuming you are French). If Rover were still around, and British owned, and made a similar car, you'd get a similar remark. Porsche are just seen as a more prestigious brand.
Alpines a good car, the 718 is a great car.
Hey Parkers the new Audi A8 is better than an s class because in s class you will find a cheap bits of plastic in it's lower parts but in the Audi there is nothing cheaper in it and it's drive is also better than an s class of you people will try the A8 and an s class on highways in city I. Motorways and in all the A8 has dominated the s class and yeah in terms of interiors s class is slightly above than A8 in terms of design but the Audi's design is also very impressive it's very high tech it's virtual cockpit is brilliant in class and well yeah both cars are nice for me Audi, Mercedes, BMW I think you people should do again the review of both cars and what do you people like s class a8 or 7 series plzzzzz telllll meeee
Didnt know Steve Coogan did car reviews
The things you learn on TH-cam, eh?!
LOL ... 718gts (0 To 60) is 3.8
In reality, every Porsche on average gets 10K of customisations, and Porsche's menu for that in colours, materials, quality and choice does not exist anywhere else, even if you only look at the paint options, and then you have the resale value of a Porsche, so if you really had to make this decision in real life and not as a drooling comment on a TH-cam video, then this isn't even a contest and the Porsche wins hands down.
the resale value of the Premiere edition of the Alpine is sky high...
What would have happened is this:
Alpine costs 48K Pounds (250 hp)
Cayman (300 hp) 43K (manual) or 45K (PDK).
So you can throw in another 5K in options (or 7K in case of the manual) and would arrive at the same price as the Alpine - pretending that it would cost 25K more is ridiculous ;)
So they are very close in price, depending on your hunger for options, of course, and going from there, the Porsche will have a better resale price...
And btw, it should be obvious what to do for all those people who bemoan the lack of a manual transmission here... *wink-wink* the Cayman has one... just sayin' ;) It happens to be an excellent manual, too.
The price difference though.
I drove both cars, and bought...... the 718
Simply because it's a better car
He forgot the tie?
no way is the gearbox comparable please.
