    A very overlooked watch is the Citizen CA7020-07A (Chandler) is usually $190-$200 its a beautiful watch that punches way above its weight. Definitely worth checking out.
    Also under the $2000 price point at about $1600 is the Hamilton Intra-Matic - H3841671. A beautiful watch that should be in every collection.

    Hey everyone! Like I mentioned, chronographs are more expensive than many less complicated watches. That said, I wanted to stretch the price point to $2,500 to have a more complete list. I have a couple exciting updates coming soon so stay tuned!!

    I'm a big fan of the Stowa Chrono 1938. With an in-house Stowa movement its about $2200, and absolutely beautiful. Plus a huge choice of straps, two case finish choices, date or no-date...

      I hear ya man... personally, I don’t think chronographs are worth it for that reason. They tend to be much more expensive and are more expensive to service.

      @tectons8371 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Indeed! When you pay so much money you need something good! I am really considering though to buy one junghans max bill but it’s big deal for me,it suck how the inflation in some countries make it easier to invest money on expensive stuff

      Try the Timex 40mm chronograph or Pagani PD-2720k or PD-1644... which has decent specs and has a similar look to the Junghans with a mecha quartz movement - the 1644 has the Rolex Daytona look and also decent specs.

    I would have considered the Graf Zeppelin time pieces. Not only they are beautiful, but there's also very affordable quartz (Swiss movement, I believe) versions for certain models.

    • @HGX1

      meh, quartz is quartz, unless it's HAQ like on the Bulova moonwatch. Oh and mechaquartz should be the standard on all quartz chrono's, I have a timex weekender that isn't and I want to rip out my eyes watching the chrono run. It's best if there's no tick tock second hand too, you already have the chrono seconds hand if you need to time something,

  • @Kidnova928

    I hope you see this one! I'm just getting into watches and I cant afford the good majority of the watches on this channel. The first one around $230 is actually towards the high end of my budget.. for now. I have 3 watches in my collection that are clearly novice. I have my late grandfathers US Polo Assn quartz watch he got from my grandmother on their 50th anniversary. It was the last watch he wore and she gave it to me when he passed. For my 21st birthday my biological dad sent me an invicta pro diver chronograph. Which is a big deal because he has been in and out of my life and there was a time where id be lucky to even get a phone call. And i just recently ordered a vincero chronograph. Before discovering the watch TH-cam community of course i had to get a fashion watch.
    Your content is great and i love how passionate you are! I will be sure to check out some seiko and orient watches thanks to you! Hopefully i find a good chronograph!

    Teddy, nice review, as always. The Hamilton pilot watch is the "Crosswind," not the "X Wing." The rotating bezel is a wind drift calculator, surely the least useful watch complication ever, but a heart warmer for old pilots like me.

      I just picked up a Timex Expedition 16700 analog-digital for my bash around watch I’ll use when flying (it happens to have all the functions that I needed for work) It’s brass underneath it’s black exterior, I plan on bead blasting the black to show it’s brass casing. Hopefully it’ll show some patina as it ages.

    I recently saw some Timex Waterbury chronographs that I think are just beautiful.

    • @pchris6662
      @pchris6662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. For whatever reason Timex/Casio never get any love or respect. I know they are for us "common people" but considering that a Timex delivers a chrono that measures to 1/20th of a second and with indiglo you can read the dial in the dark, so it's delivering more features than all the others, one would think it could at least be mentioned by the watch community. Not to say the beauty and craftsmanship of the pure manuals isn't a lovely thing to behold (and hold), but respect should be a two way street.

    • @lordkayx
      @lordkayx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw the twerp did heart this XD. I just bought a Timex Fairfield. And they are the great because you can see them in the dark. Its amazing that lume paint is more expensive than indiglo tech. or may like diamonds , watches cost dollars to make and they jack up the price literally 10000% (or more).

    One watch that I think is really underrated or even completely unknown is the Citizen CA700-04H. I bought this watch off Amazon for around $230 CAD and it's probably one of my favourites. The eco drive movement means I almost never have to reset the watch if I don't wear it for a few days and it's dressier than say a dive watch, but still have a sporty aesthetic to it.

  • @dylvasey
    @dylvasey 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. My top three are:
    3. Strela - Not a brand I know anything about, but my god that watch is making me feel like a five year old at Christmas.
    2. Longines - Classically beautiful.
    1. Junghans - One of my favorite ever watch designs.
    I recently tried to buy the Junghans but just couldn't get one at the price I wanted to pay. I nearly went for a Sinn (more so because I've never actually seen one in the flesh and sooner or later I have to see what all the fuss is about). In the end I purchased an Omega Speedy Reduced. It's a nice watch but not really exclusive enough on the wrist if you know what I mean (not wanting to belittle it). I did get it for a great price, so as soon as it comes back from my watch guy it will be moved on. The trials and tribulations of a watch lover!

    No clue why Casio isn't given much love on watch channels. Sure it's Quartz, but I'm pretty sure my Casio Edifice Chronograph (which looks leagues better than the ones near the bottom of this list) and is built really, really solidly would blow these watches out of the water. Sure, it's Quartz, but so are some of the watches mentioned in the video. Well built, looks gorgeous, is damn reliable - and it's freaking 150$ (where I live)! Chrono+Day+Date.
    EF 558D-2AV, for anyone who's interested. I've seen and worn a Seiko 5 in person, which costs twice as much and is considered "budget", and the atrocious bracelet, the general lack of weight - boy does it feel low quality in comparison. Sure it's automatic, but in terms of material quality, no competition.
    Edifice really really needs more love. Owning this kindled my love for watches, and is pushing me to someday dream about an ALS or a PP.

    Enjoy watching this site. Almost skipped this page because it led off with a quartz chronograph. Skipped through and saw that the rest were mechanical. Just a suggestion, but my read is that many watchophiles are basically allergic to even the mention of quartz. Perhaps segment an affordable chronograph feature, or 2-3 hand even, into one for mechanical movements and one for quartz

    Maybe some B&M chronos, especially in the range you’re describing. I just purchased a new B&M Capeland and I love it, one of the oldest Swiss companies that have solidified a great brand name, I don’t see why they’re not spoken of more. Couldn't help but notice that copy of The Fountainhead and what I'm pretty sure is also Atlas Shrugged to it's left on your bookshelf. I just started my watch collection with the Hamilton Khaki Day Date Pilot, the "Interstellar" watch. If you've seen the film you know Time plays an important role. Fortis Cosmonauts Chronograph ($1500 - $1600): It may be a bit of a busy chronograph, but it's a tool watch. Standard issue to the Russian Cosmonauts, and is probably on the wrists of some of those guys/gals on the ISS right now - so that's kinda cool. I have one and it's an absolute beast!

    In my humble opinion, automatics and quartz watches should not be compared together. Peaches and tomatoes are both fruit, but they are so different. Do a video on automatic chronographs and then do another video on quartz chronographs watches later. ( If Archie Luxury was dead, he would be rolling over in his grave! ) You are still the man, Teddy!
    My favorite chronograph, if anyone is interested, is the ZENO-WATCH BASEL Gentleman Automatic Chronograph Valjoux 7753 Black Ref. 6662-7753 in rose gold.

    the picture of the Seagull 1963 you put there is in fact a picture of a replica. The original Seagull 1963 reissue is limited to 5500 pieces and costs over $500.

    Hey Teddy, great video. You mentioned you can find the Junghans Max Bill for cheaper than the listed retail price. Would you be able to shed more light on where I could find it? I’m in Australia and it’s really difficult to import the watch here without paying an exorbitant price. Any suggestions?

    You should have a look at geckota watches. ETA, Seiko or Myota movements at a price point interesting for your peer group of viewers. They also make high quality straps.

  • @lenvanerstrom8980

    What are some of the straps you have on your watches, particularly the Junghans and the Dan Henry? I'm interested in good after market straps and who the best makers are.

    Probably the most affordable chronograph would be the Timex Weekeender chrono which could be had for under $100.

    For the value, I can't go past the Tissot PRC200. It does 1/10ths of a second - how many of these do that? I'm looking at the dials and not seeing a 10th of a second indicator unless some of the "60" marked dials do that role...

    I agree with most of your choices but in the case of Sinn I prefer the Pilot 356 which is very similar to the 103 but in a size of 38.5 mm, which for someone with thin wrists, like me, is much better.
    Although it does not have the Cal. 7750 of Valjoux if it has a Sellita SW500 that its a clone of the 7750 and that, according to what I read, it has the same performance. Another difference is that it is waterproof only up to 100 meters, but if you do not plan to dive with it, it does not seem like a problem.

    Since you lean towards vintage style pieces I suggest you take a look at Zodiac.... specifically the Sea Dragon chronograph for this segment. It is powered by a Valjoux 7750, has a domed sapphire crystal with AR on a cushion shaped case with a nicely finished movement that can be seen through a sapphire display back. I would very interested to hear you opinion of it. As always, a great video.

    Basically the watch that really helped propel my watch love is a Tissot quickster (grey w/ bracelet) that I still wear all the time. I've moved onto automatic/mechanical pieces but I'm pretty sure it can be had grey market for $350 or less and it's a Swiss quartz w sapphire and 100M water resistance (and a bracelet w solid end links). Nothing special but will always be important to me

    Watch prices surely have climbed up. 5 years ago I paid $2400 for a '69 pre-Moon Speedmaster with Dot over 90 bezel and original bracelet on eBay.
    Now a Speedmaster Reduced is $2000-2300 holy crap.

    Hello Teddy , maybe for a next video you should include the brand Edox. I like some of their models specially from the collection Les Bemonts.

    I always liked the look of Tag Huer Carerra watches but for me they are too expensive and quartz is a more practical proposition as I won't wear it all the time and when I do a mechanical would be stopped and need setting. I have just found Certina watches and bought the DS2 Flyback with steel bracelate at just over £600. I think it looks similar to the Tag Carerra and is claimed to be accurate to 10 seconds in a year

    Hi Teddy, My favorites out of the watches you listed are the Max Bill (of course) and the Sinn. Something you might include in the Part 2 video is an explanation why chronographs are more expensive and a reminder that servicing them is also more costly. I am not saying the added cost isn't worth it, but it is something to consider when buying a chronograph.

    Nice, Strela doesn't get mentioned much, but I like them. Plus, I originally grew interested in them because, while the Omega Speedmaster is a moonwatch, the significantly more affordable Strela Cosmos was the first spacewatch, so as my collection grow I can potentially have representatives of both sides of the Space Race, lol
    Only issue I'm running into is finding a place that's familiar with the Russian movement to service it without having to ship it all the way to Germany.

    Steal of the year: William L 1985 chronograph. List price about $200 but available for much less at the usual online establishments. Great vintage looks. Great build quality. 40mm, decent lume on hands and markers, plus 5 ATM water resistance.
    There are several models. The version I bought has a running seconds subdial at 3 o'clock, a center mounted elapsed seconds hand and a 60 minute elapsed subdial at 9 o'clock, plus a date window between 4 and 5 o'clock.
    I bought one for the heck of it and I get more compliments on it than many of my expensive watches. People want to know where I got the "nice old watch".

    Alsosmll note, the SI on the Damasko refers to it's silicone escapement, and is hence a much pricier proposition than the regular 7750
