Same here it’s fascinating!! We cruise a lot and see these super yachts all over the place! Would be cool if some of the employees have video of the inside! Especially now they have been sacked!
They never owned them in the first place. Call it what it is - theft or piracy by those nations. Those boats are not owned by the Russian government. They're owned by individuals that have no say in what Russia is doing. NATO has no stake in this. They are not at war with Russia. So it's theft. Do you want other nations to do that to say British citizens and their assets abroad? We don't like England so your expensive stuff is ours.
With all these megaboats hitting the market, prices may be ridiculously low. I hope the proceeds go to Ukrainian refugees and eventually to rebuilding Ukraine - and not swindled again.

Thanks for the update. I was discussing the terminology with my tourism students on Friday and the terms 'arrested' and 'seized' mean very different things in other languages. We decided that 'detained' or 'impounded' might be a better term, or even 'confiscated'.

Your sentiments at roughly 8:20 are extremely important to recognise and I support the fact you said this. Not quite, but not far off. More like the cost of a surprise weekly expense, like maybe a traffic ticket or minor car repair: a nuisance, but nothing to break a sweat over. What surprises me the most about this is the fact that all these oligarchs obviously got caught by surprise. These people are deeply involved in russian politics as pretty much everybody who was allowed to rise to (and stay) a billionaire the 90s and early 00s. All these people letting their yachts sit in EU ports also displays that even they did not anticipate Putin being serious about war.
Well that in itself likely confirms that they are not as close to power and Putin as people that create conspiracy theories like to think. Being corrupt and handling money over doesn’t mean you get regular phone calls for political advice. It’s likely Putin despises these people are much s as everyone else but uses or plays them.
Several likely possibilities. In invading Ukraine, Russia unwittingly kicked a hornets' nest and reignited the cold war - few if any political and economic elites seem to have foreseen the severity of the response, nor the fear and anger driving it. It also seems plausible that Putin didn't warn them - I see no reason to believe Putin is loyal to anybody but himself. Additionally the oligarchs are used to being above the law and probably thought they were untouchable.
If they didn't think he was serious about war then they were just being naïve. A LOT of us saw this coming just by *paying attention* to what Putin was saying and how the military was acting. Their constant intrusions into Ukrainian airspace and the military buildup along the border should've been a clear sign of aggression, but sadly many people (the idiot media in my country, for example.) were absolutely clueless to this. Hell, we saw this with the chicom's and their aggressive actions toward Hong Kong even *before* it actually kicked off (again, due to how they were acting before hand and intruding into their airspace) but like with Russia, the media just ignores it and thinks nothing will happen. We are now starting to see it with Taiwan as well, incursions into their air space and the threatening actions toward their fishing boats and transport ships (but of course, the media things nothing will happen, again, CLUELESS) When the common man knows more about what is happening in the world, than the so called "media" that is supposed to serve the people and keep them informed, that shows just how out of touch that media really is with reality.
Thanks for keeping a humane approach to this topic. It's really great to have a reliable source of information reporting what is happening in this area.
Thanks for the updates! It remains to be seen what the situation means for Blohm+Voss. The shipyard has been in a dire situation for the past years and is quite fragile economically. Not only do they have to deal with the "behemoth" now, Lürssen's recent plan was to focus entirely on yachts and navy ships. I guess, within the yachting segment, B+V has its market share with those ships that are too big for everyone else and might mostly be Russian-owned. I don't think that we will actually see a German navy buildup that could compensate for lasting trade restrictions.

I've watched your other videos as you keep tabs on these super yachts. As the Western world becomes more and more upset with the plight of Ukraine and its people, I'm glad you took a moment to mention the Russian people and how many of them don't want war, too. The majority of people in most countries simply want to go back to our daily lives. Thanks for your informative videos on some of the big pieces of wealth belonging to oligarchs with ties to Putin.
I'd argue that a majority have no clue since they live in an info vacuum and propaganda mediascape. Maybe a majority of those who do know what is happening want the war to stop, but there's also a near or actual majority of Russians who still back Putin. It's they who must be shocked into understanding they have enabled a mad dictator and remove him.
It would be interesting if a list was completed of these vessels as to their worth, who owns them, from what country, their worth, how they accumulated that worth and over what time. Also included Philip Green.
Why would that be interesting? Persecuting people/seizing yachts without due process are signs of a tyrannical government. It is exactly how Chinese people are treated by their government. Good question! :-) However, remember that when you seize something it doesn't mean that you have to destroy it. The British are famous for seizing the ships of combatants during world wars and then renaming the ship and taking it over as their own, with their own Royal Navy crew. So I suppose they could just fire everyone and put in their own players and managers. Oh wait, those already are largely British...
Seizing property without due process is a slippery slope we should not go down. You could have your property seized anytime with out due process or any reason what so ever.
They seize assets in the USA if you are a suspected drug dealer, so why not? I do admit it's a slippery slope for honest people. I would not mind a 'worldwide' "UN" law that says: "due process for any asset forfeiture EXCEPT for Russian citizens, who automatically will have all their assets seized until they prove their assets were not stolen in the early 1990s" (which is impossible to prove).
So far only if you profit from the stealing from your fellow countrymen, and show support for an egomaniacal mass murderer. Other than that you should be okay...
Could you please explain HOW the sanctions effect these boats. How are they able to detain them and confiscate them because of sanctions against Russia.
The same way a country seizes or taxes anything, they have authority over the people and property within their country, they pass laws that say what they are allowed to do or not do, and they have enforcers with guns and jail cells to back up what they say. So the relevant countries have decided that the property of a list of certain people or certain companies are now under control of the state, and anyone who disagrees can pick up a weapon and fight them off, make a run for it, or let them take it and argue that what happened was not legal in a court at a later date. Seeing as these are civilian vessels crewed by unarmed professional staff unwilling to lose their lives or their freedom they comply with the friendly armed men who come to the boat and say 'please leave, this is ours now because this piece of paper says so.'
The sanctions apply not just to Russia but also to specific Russian companies and individuals. Any assets owned by sanctioned companies and individuals can be seized by participating governments.
As a sailor who is sitting on my boat listening to you and also a hundred ton sea captain, you did an exceptional report. Good detail and covered my questions from every angle. Work on my fellow captain, great job. Captain John Wilson.

It’s the risk you take when you serve the people involved in historic money laundering and theft from the Russian people. It all goes back decades and everyone turns a blind eye. Pretending it’s different, maybe. Pretending they are special, maybe. Pretending the business they are in isn’t corrupted in some way, maybe.
Is Russia somehow special in this regard? I love how everyone is shitting on Russia like our governments are all better than them somehow. I don't support war or aggression of any type, Russia is not the only culprit in that realm.
I’d say it’s astonishing how “the world” which is a coalition of Globalists can get away with acting like fascist dictators and confiscate private property because they believe the country acted wrong. Imagine if the same was done to the US for invading Afghanistan or Iraq or any other country they invaded in recent years.
@@freedomfreedom6544 I imagine the US might have made better decisions if the world held our oligarchs responsible for the government they puppet arounds actions.

You're right. Wealthy people don't buy these expensive toys, super cars, yachts, homes. They get a low interest loan and use their money to invest and essentially the toy is cheaper to own than if they paid cash. When one of these assets is seized, it's probably the bank that's losing out.

Doesn't matter, imagine being a billionaire but you're barred from all the best shops, no point being a billionaire.
Yes, I think you’re correct. Putin moving his yacht two weeks ago obviously had this planned.
We are now starting to see it with Taiwan as well, incursions into their air space and the threatening actions toward their fishing boats and transport ships (but of course, the media things nothing will happen, again, CLUELESS)
When the common man knows more about what is happening in the world, than the so called "media" that is supposed to serve the people and keep them informed, that shows just how out of touch that media really is with reality.

I met a woman who use to work as crew on Dilbar. She only said great thing about Alisher Usmanov. Or are we only going to apply sanctions when they don't impact us?
Good question! :-)
However, remember that when you seize something it doesn't mean that you have to destroy it. The British are famous for seizing the ships of combatants during world wars and then renaming the ship and taking it over as their own, with their own Royal Navy crew. So I suppose they could just fire everyone and put in their own players and managers. Oh wait, those already are largely British...

All the assets of those oligarchs are frozen, this includes their yachts.
The sanctions apply not just to Russia but also to specific Russian companies and individuals. Any assets owned by sanctioned companies and individuals can be seized by participating governments.

Imagine if the same was done to the US for invading Afghanistan or Iraq or any other country they invaded in recent years.
@@freedomfreedom6544 I imagine the US might have made better decisions if the world held our oligarchs responsible for the government they puppet arounds actions.
That's always been the case? Why are people surprised that it hasn't changed. For millenia it was kings and emperors, later was royal families, dictators and industrial billionaires. The power is always at the hands of a select few. That will also probably never change. It's just how humans are. It's unfortunate, but it just is.
GREAT STUFF YOU ARE PRESENTING
I remember when you tubers predicted a war with Ukraine because Putin moved his yacht out of Germany before work upgrading it was completed. It seemed like a bit of a stretch to me at the time. In hind sight it seems like inspired sleuthing!
Thanks for all of your hard work!
It’s time for the bully’s of the world, and their cronies, to learn the hard lessons when supporting behavior outside the norms of humanity. Sucks for the folks that run these vessels. God bless Ukraine !
Your puny god can piss off, whichever one of the thousands you choose to believe in. They either don’t care, aren’t powerful or don’t exist. How can a just god sit and watch so much unfairness in the world.

An absolutely huge yacht like Dilbar is ridiculous: Thinking one has so many friends or (even important colleagues) to fill it up is an utter fantasy. I mean, fill a yacht with people but don't call them friends, they certainly are not. Also, can you address what those who seize these super yachts will do with them? What is their future? To auction? For example, who the hell wants Dilbar?! You said it best: BEHEMOTH.
House refugees in it. I think it's appropriate.
@@lickalittle Brilliant!
As another commenter pointed out, wealthy people buy toys, homes, etc on loan. They earn more interest on investments than the loan interest.
So, basically the bank holding the note wants someone to want Dilbar.
Few understand that in purchasing these wealthy toys these billionaires are creating jobs, industry and commerce. Stop taking your ill-advised social equalisation pills and accept the fact that some individuals are worth more money than others and usually share their wealth without pomp and ceremony for the betterment of people in real need.
@@waynedrummond6583 - The problem with your argument is that it completely ignores the other half of the coin where much of their wealth was earned by stepping on and keeping down of the people you suggest are worth less.
The Rolling Stones should hold a concert on them at different ports of call, and raise money for Ukraine. They can hire the crew. Opening tune "you can't always get what you want!" 😁
The vast majority of people reading your comment probably don't even know what the Rolling Stones are. But thats a funny and good idea.
@@hawkdsl basically everyone knows who they are bud... they're a household name
Don’t know anything about how these super yachts are paid, but I’m guessing that even billionaires prefer to have loans with deductibles on their yachts. Alas, they “own” the boats in conjunction with banks or finance corporations. Would be interesting to learn more about this.
You're right. Wealthy people don't buy these expensive toys, super cars, yachts, homes.
They get a low interest loan and use their money to invest and essentially the toy is cheaper to own than if they paid cash.
When one of these assets is seized, it's probably the bank that's losing out.
This is why the sanctions are worded as they are to include rented or "controlled" by....
thank you for reminding us that the crews are impacted
Not that it matters but this probably the best I’ve seen your hair look. Just saying. Keep up the great work. I am not a boater, hell I’m not even into boating at all but something about you and your channel is magnetizing. So I just keep watching. Straight, married dude here btw.
I think your doing a really great job. Excellent work. I hope these guys never see these yachts.
These yachts should be sold and the proceeds given to the victims of Mr. Putin's aggression.
Zelinski endangers his citizens by excepting foreign missiles
My heart goes out to all the sizable crews out there who are getting canned all at once, but "Nord" is one of my favorite yachts in the world; & I'm very happy she's still sailing & that she still has a full crew! "Nord" is GORGEOUS!
Limited sympathy as they would have known the scumbags they were working for....
I believe my sympathy lies with the families of slaughtered Ukrainians.🇺🇦💪🇺🇸
@@tomriley5790 Scumbags? Hmmm you are totally ignorant. Do you think anyone that is that rich has got there by being nice? That goes for the scumbags in the UK, Germany, USA etc etc. You also need to be wary of who you insult before checking out what these "scumbags" own in your country? Have a look at the scumbags in your own country before you insult people.
@@yellowduck8061 Haha, your name YELLOW says it all. You are suckered up and believing what the western media are saying. You are being used and manipulated and too dorf to realise. Russia has been un-Russian in this war and has been clinical in its attacks. When you arm a civilian population, they are no longer civilians but combatants.
Thank you for the interesting information. I worked for a man that had many millions invested in the Americas Cup. He and Ted Turner were very good friends. They were both Master Yachtsman. I remember the large yachts that came in from around the world in the summer of 1983 when we lost The Americas Cup after keeping the Cup for 123 years. After viewing it in the New York Yacht Club in New York City it look like it needed to come out for some fresh air and see the light of day.
I was a guest on board several of those magnificent yachts that traveled from Europe, England and from down in the islands. The crew was always amazed that I wanted to see the Engine Room. When my husband and I were in the Navy he was an Lieutenant. He graduated from the U.S.Naval Academy and he was the Main Propulsion Assistant on board a Destroyer. This is where I learned to appreciate what makes them go.
On those magnificent yachts in Newport Harbor those Engine Rooms were so spotless you could eat off of the floor. I remember the Engine Room containing two rows of enormous Cummings Engines that powered the magnificent vessel across the oceans 🌊 of the world 🌎. I miss that life. I loved the peacefulness of sailing most of all.
Excellent reporting! Much more thorough then the average news services.
Good info, just feel sorry for the crew. They are just doing their job and should all be paid in full.
Tell'em to sue Putin for their lost wages. I certain the Russian courts will look favorably on THAT.
The food in these super yachts should be distributed to food banks, homeless people as they shouldn't go to waste
The wealth of every billionaire and multi millionaire should be distributed to food banks because they should not be allowed to exist until food banks do not.
@@Nine-Signs Yup that will help sweet FA. So you want a world of poor? I would rather sterilise the poor. I am tired of supporting the poor that breed like rabbits but cannot feed themselves. They cause their own poverty
My office designs private aircraft and yachts; the largest private aircraft is Prince Al Waleed’s Boeing 747-400 followed by the late Sheldon Adelson’s Airbus A340-500 (which we designed).
Big fan of your designs
Thank you 🙏🏽
Great channel bro. Came across your videos and now I’m hooked. Great content, great narrative, great info.
I know here in the USA contractors on land can file mechanic liens against a property for non-payment of contracted terms. How does this work (or not) on the water?
Same! It would be much more satisfying to just visit the yachts in question and sink them.
Considering the ridiculous size of these yachts I thought some one could leapfrog the size game and convert the ocean liner SS United States to a yacht ! Almost 1000' long and the fastest ocean crossing passenger liner. During it's early testing I saw a photo of it going 20 knots,
not impressed---------- it was in reverse!
I'm new to the channel and to super yachts. I read with interest the history of the SS United States. I do hope she is to be restored with the flag of the USA flying proudly again.
It's amazing that is still floating! It is powered with surplus aircraft carrier engines. Was designed to be converted to a troop carrier in times of need with minimal downtime for the conversion. Hope it survives.
I was a Cold War courier in Russia. Five Russian agents have been killed in Ukraine in the last two weeks. I was in the Union (Soviet Union) for almost 18 years. I suffered no harm from the Russian or Ukrainian people because the good decent people and nobody Wanted the Cold War to get Hot, so there was no real animosity. It is very different because of what Putin is doing. It wasn't the agents who died; it wasn't the Ukrainians who killed them that was a fight for survival. It was the fact that Putin is the Hitler of the 21st century, or at least he Is trying to be. The Russians nor the Ukrainians are to blame for this, and no one should Be angry with either of them.
Thank you for your great video content. My oldest son is a Merchant Marine (unlimited tonnage Chief Mate) so I'm keenly interested in what transpires in your industry. Keep up the great work, stay safe and healthy.
I love stories of Russian Oligarchs luxury super yachts being seized... Great videos..
Really too bad for the crews. Hopefully this will end soon.
I hope you're right but I am guessing Putin just bought himself another Afghanistan.
@@waynedrummond6583 I think you are right. My worry is how many Ukrainians have to be murdered until he figures this out.
There is better reporting from you than from the ‘legacy’ media sources (CNN, BBC, CBC, MSNBC etc.). Thanks for the videos.
I'm not sure why private citizens are being sanctioned. Kind of like the truckers in Canada having their trucks confiscated.
It'll be interesting to see how this works out...
Some manufacturers in the US, with the incorrect political opinions, get de-banked.
aka.... I am blind to the immorality of people.
There... fixed it for you.
This is a very slippery slope with these yacht grabs. If all you have to be is a citizen of a country who's government goes to war, for them to strip you of your property. Means that eventually it could happen to anyone who have nothing to do with what their government is involved in. This is a major power grab, and unless they are directly involved, should not be allowed to happen.
Absolutely! They start with unlawful acts against some bad guys (or would be bad guys anyway), then as the precedent is set they are free to follow up with anyone's property without much consent. Canadian Truckers's bank accounts come to mind immediately.

The Russian guy who refers to his country's invasion of Ukraine as "geopolitical tensions" is clearly a huge jerk and deserves to lose his $29 billion.
15 years in Russian prison is the alternative if he even mentions the word Ukraine to the press
No. It means he doesn’t want to get involved. America still calling Vietnam a ‘police action’? That’s a direct comparison.
Given he can end up in prison as Russia is not free - he is being diplomatic by stating the obvious for all but you; he didn’t start the war.
How? Saying anything else would be getting involved...And, he still wont have his boat. P.S. Guess who is going to PAY that $29 MILLION? Driven past a gas pump in the last couple days...? That's right: WE will pay for that boat in the form of increased fuel prices.

What is your guess regarding the impact these mass dismissals of qualified seafarers will have on crew salaries in general?
It's a global industry, I doubt it will have much effect.
Same as for the dismissals of the qualified pilots and mechanics in aviation, all these workers in the automotive, chemical, agricultural and all other industries that going to suffer after loosing such a huge market. It might be the end of the global economy and trading as we know it.

Sinead McNamara was a dodgy death on a yacht. - McNamara had been working aboard the six-story, $140 million Mayan Queen IV since May and was said to be working her last shift when she died, The Daily Mail reported
Robert Maxwell…. Depending who you believe, murder, heart attack or suicide.
You think we are going to hear about them?
Maxwell... supposedly killed while drunkenly relieving himself off of the stern of the Lady Ghislaine.... named after.... you guessed it.
