For anyone wondering, the creator of this channel, Travis, tragically passed away on March 10th, 2024. This was my car that he created the video on. He was extremely talented and had big dreams to make his TH-cam channels into something significant. We miss him very much.
As a "Mopar" guy that was interested in the 60's early 70's cars.. I joined a Dodge sales team in 1985... Then in '87 I remember these being delivered to our dealer and shaking my head in lack of cubic inches and "trying" to be a muscle car.. But really it was me in denial of how the car world was changing.. Thought they were respectable for what they were.. Took many photos of them new off the truck.. So long ago now..
Oh Try, I never said I liked muscle cars. I'm fanatical about the 2.2/2.5 Trans4. I do get a kick out of how angry guys got when the Diamond Star connection became more well known. Heard one about a farmer that sold a Lebaron K I believe, with the Jet Astra. He didn't know it was Mitsu powered. When the buyers showed him the underhood tags, he blew a gasket and sold it extra cheap!
The most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a car, and I've owned a '70 Charger and a '69 Coronet. I've owned GLHS #0075 since 2009, with no interest to sell it. It's my forever car.
For those who claim that a GLHS is not a "true" Shelby, I suggest you read up on the GLHS production. They were bought by Shelby, shipped to his plant in CA, modified by his team, and sold through select dealerships exactly as he did with the early Mustangs. Not like todays Shelby Mustangs which are Shelby only by name and built by Ford. Except with just a dew exceptions.
too bad they didnt make it sure grip,an get the good german transmission etc..i had no. 663 shelby charger, most fun i ever had in that car,a tire smoker, but should have been sure grip,an a couple other things..do it right an dont half ass it........
I was an original owner of 87 GLHS 0815. I sold it in 1990 when I got an assignment to the United Kingdom. That was the car that I owned when my wife and I started dating. Ever since that time, I have wanted another 87 GLHS and I started getting serious about buying about two years ago. About two weeks after this video posted on here, I ended up buying the car featured in this video (564). This specific car was virtually unmolested, very little and minor rust, and all the Shelby bits were there (minus the Koni struts). This care really was in GREAT shape! Since bringing this car home, I have spent that past couple months taking care of a bunch of nit noid things to bring it as close as I can back to the way they came off the dealership floor. As long as I own this car, it will be just a cruiser and show car that I hope to show people just what 80's muscle was like. is coming full circle for me and my desire to own an 87 GLHS.

I bought one new In 1987 from Papas Dodge in New Britain, CT. From a 25 mph roll it was faster than my friends new 87 vette. I sold it in 1993 with about 80,000 miles on it. Had one turbo change and I actually broke the steering rack drifting around a corner wide open in 2nd gear. Saw one at Englishtown NJ get into the 12’s in the quarter. It had a 5th injector installed in the intake plenum, ran 18 pounds of boost and had slicks. It was a fun car in its day.
I've always wanted a CSX. I've only ever seen one for sale and the dude wanted an astronomical amount of cash for it and he wouldn't budge. I have an '86 TurboZ, 88 Shelby and Shadow ES 3.0. wanted one of these for my collection. Looking for a decent Omni GLHS that isn't molested by wanna-be mechanics.
@@yukonstriker1703 nice. Do they share the same motor as the Neon SRT-? I always wondered about them and I never drove one. I've driven a basically stock SRT4 Neon and it felt faster than it should be. I think they were rated around 240 horsepower but It felt closer to about 280ish. Maybe Dodge under-rated the horsepower figures on purpose?

I ordered a brand new 85 Shelby ( 1st yr with turbo) with no A/C and only a rear defogger as an additional option from the factory. I could outrun IROC Camaros and 5.0 mustangs from the same era with that little car. I wish I had upgraded to the GLH version in 87 but I ended up getting a family car next. That Shelby was a blast to drive back then!
The FWD Mopar sports coupes are revolutionary. It's common today to see a FWD sports car,but this was the first small compact Turbo inline 4. Plus it's got that boxy, 80s look that AE86 bois would like..
Back in 1988 my buddy had one of these. We took it to Ocean City, Md for a weekend and I have such nostalgic memories in it. He had a tune/chip and couple Direct Connection Mopar upgrades and it gave IROC-Z and 5.0 Mustangs absolute fits…. it wasn’t faster…. but they weren’t either lol. Summer of ‘88 ❤
Thanks for this - I miss my 1985 Shelby Charger and some of the driving scenes brought me right back to the early 90s when I had it. I looked @ #764? back in the late 90s but it was shot! I still should have bought it.
Every dodge or chrysler made with a factory turbo is drop dead beautiful to me...I don't care if it's the Charger, the Omni, or even the Caravan, if it has a factory turbo, i love it and think it's beautiful. The GLHS cars are some of the baddest on the planet .
The speedo overlay went to 135 in the OMNI GLHS ! No shifter bushings on the '86 and '87 GLHS cars because they are rod linkage originally. The plastic ends on the linkage fatigue with age etc....it is nice to convert them over to heim joint so that the linkage cannot pop off. Nice video, these cars deserve all the attention they can get!
There are still pivot bushings in the rod linkage. Don't forget to remind people to weld the pivot pin solid to the bracket on the differential. They are press fit from the factory and they work loose over time.
@@watzonda2b I'm still so frustrated. With all the people I have talked to, I still don't know of any other GLHS that had the Shelby stickered speedo replaced under warranty. All I have is the lousy dealer sticker in the door jamb as proof.
My dad and i played with alot of these back in the 90's. We would but them with blown head gaskets for next nothing. Sometimes people would give them to us for free to get them out of thier yard. Thr first one we go running and running good, when we hit second gear my eyes blurred and i couldnt see anything untio we hit 4th. Great fun
It is a Shelby Charger GLHS. Not a Dodge, Shelby cars was listed as the manufacture. I bought one new in 1987 and just got rid of it 5 years ago. I brought that car to Germany when I was in the Army and drove it on the Autobahn. I could bury the speedometer and almost hit redline in 5th gear.
Unlike the 86 GLHS, you are correct - it does not say Dodge anywhere on the vehicle. So yes, you are right. Titling aside, it’s undeniably a souped up Dodge Charger lol this was my GLHS, #564. I now own #465.
I owned an 86 GLHS Omni and the Chargers were a tick slower but were (in my opinion) better looking. Great to see a nice piece of these as I'm still very fond of them and they were sleepers "back in the day" and were a riot as a daily driver car. I kept a diary of my ownership and would happy to share it. In the late 80's these cars were a match for about anything else from the era. These days a lot of cars run mid 14 quarter miles though.
That’s awesome! This one was my friends, but they are pretty fun cars even today! If I had more room and time I would def like to add one to the garage, but I already am out of room and have too many ideas for the junk I already own lol. And very true pretty much anything that isn’t an economy car or SUV runs 14s stock these days, heck even some suvs and economy cars run that stock lol.
i really miss my 86 Shelby Charger. mine was black and silver. a lot of people mistook it was a special edition fox body mustang. simply put it was a fun car. thank you for sharing your glhs.
I own two Shelby chargers and a Shelby z 87 Daytona turbo2 5-speed. If anybody's looking to build these cars stock any of the turbo ones with the old carburetor block off plate to the left of the oil filter would be considered a turbo one. Glhs turbo twos were actually intercooled turbo ones. the 1989 common block does not have the block off plate to the left of the oil filter and is a stronger engine block with forge crank and rods from the 1989 and up turbo II. 500 horsepower is easy to maintain with the 89 common block 2.2. another note is in 1987 they came out with the 555 transmission 5-speed swapping the 555 into the turbo 2 glhs charger without raising power would increase torque from 175 to 200 lb feet just from a transmission change that also includes changing the half shafts over which are the same as the automatic and you'll want to change the hub bearings too. My 87 Shelby z Daytona had a built turbo two with 89 common block full port and polish head stock valves super 60 camshaft and rockers with new lifters and springs the stock turbo was a t3 Garrett and had tec redo the turbo to a t3 t4 hybrid with 60 trim blades and a 360 thrust bearing plate since ball bearings weren't available at the time. with 442 lb injectors running at 100 PSI at the fuel rail and 30,000 off the head and 30,000 off the block with a compression ratio of 9 to 1 a center Force clutch and 555 transmission the car ran 12.6 at 116 mph. And it did this and it's normal red exterior stock trim with t-tops and original clamshell wheels with 225 50 15 directional gatorbacks. Bush level was only initially set at 15 but would smack 18 lb and settle at 15 16 lb with a manual controller and a Shelby performance tuned computer and map from the factory. Made for a fun daily driver until I raced a supercharged Firehawk on my freeway leaving a toll plaza I popped a vacuum line while accelerating and the boost went to 21 lb ran lean pop the head gasket under acceleration but I did smoke the Firehawk. He was so pissed he wanted to know what was underneath the hood and accused me of having a twin turbo v6 and I told him no it's a four-cylinder so I pulled over and let him look underneath the hood and being the wise ass that I am I said count the wires just don't include the coil wire 😆. This is long before the high horsepower turbo cars really came to the scene. In stock form the Bosch fuel injection system is extremely dependable these cars get 27 mi to the gallon in stock form with a 5-speed and without a lead foot they were great economic fun cars to drive and the whole point is not to over rev the engine on turbo one cars but you have full throttle in the power band when the turbo kicks in revenue engine is of no benefit. The engine needs to be under load for boost to really come in hard so revving the engine is pointless. But Bill properly they are fun cars to drive and if you really like torque take a turbo one 2.5 l turbo integrate the intercooler with the stock ECU and run it on a 555 transmission and you'll have about 100 lb feet of torque more on 12 lb of boost. it's all in the tuning and what the car is going to be built for the automatic 2.5 turbos did well with the intercooler and about three to five PSI more for a fun daily driver. I've had two Shelby chargers a glh Omni and two Shelby z daytonas one stock automatic and the one I built which was a turbo two car. Those days are long gone but remember when doing timing belts on these cars there is a tool with a counterweight on it that gets the timing belt just right so you don't get that timing belt wine and the car will sound fantastic. also remember using 89 turbo equipment it upgrades the timing belt to round tooth instead of the original square tooth which is also better for timing belt wear and dependability. Great cars from Chrysler and it deserve a lot more credit than they got and just so you know the two fastest cars you can buy that ran a standing quarter mile of 14.7 was the Shelby charger glhs and the Grand national GNX yes I said GNX. At the standard Grand national but the GNX also has a standing quarter mile of 14.7. Shelby chargers just have the ability to stop and turn and handle versus the rear wheel drive counterparts but they're all American and all these cars are awesome including the mustangs Camaros trans ams Grand Nationals but I'm sorry I will have to leave out the Monte Carlo has even the super sport was nothing but a super slug and you can spank them in stock form with a non-turbo Dodge Charger. Sorry to 305 just doesn't make enough torque to move that fat ass. But Buick 3.8 turbo is a magnificent engine and also put in the 89 anniversary trans am to the 0 to 60 in 4 seconds beating the Corvette that year and that's why that car with the turbo was canceled. Don't forget the stock 224 horsepower twin cam IROC RT Daytona.... For two variations of the twin cam 2.2 turbo the Dodge built one with 224 horsepower and the Maserati head 224 horsepower. but these old l platforms would have benefited from four-wheel disc brakes all wheel drive and more turbo power and the chassis is capable of a fabricator putting in an all-wheel drive turbo system and computer system from even an evolution car or the all-wheel drive system from a minivan it is possible to make an absolute mean machine of an l-body platform with some time. It's a fuel pump block-off plate, and all it means is that it's a non common block. 1987 and 1988 TII engines both have the block-off plate. Please try not to confuse the non-TD people more than they already are.
Cool video! I had an 83 (non turbo) but always wanted a GLHS (Goes Like Hell Shelby). I remember they would run a bit harder than a 5.0 Mustang GT in the day.

I bought #236 spring of 1996 for $5000. It had 52,000 miles and was mint. I added better audio system and upgraded cat back exhaust. I owned 2 cars at time and barely drove the Shelby. I made good memories for the 1 year I owned it. I sold it 1997. I miss that little car.

@@timsgta yeah, it was all I could afford at the time, raised the boost to 18lbs and a full 2 1/2 exhaust, my race record vs the GTs and Chevy was impressive when I could keep the head gasket on it
Quarter mile times are spot on. They averaged around 15 seconds flat, with skilled drivers flirting with high 14s, which was plenty respectable in the mid ‘80s 😉
Nice video. I owned an '85 Dodge Shelby Charger Turbo. Had tons of fun with it. The turbo lag was crazy - you'd step on it and about 1-2 seconds later the car would take off like a rocket and pull to one side given the torque steer issue. You'd hang on for dear life giggling all the while. Test drove one of these ('87?) GLHS models too.

Back in 85 I test drove a Omni GLH. The sales man was super cool. We pulled up to a light beside an IROC Z. He yelled at the kid " You wanna race that POS"!! The guy got pissed and said "I'll eat that mommy mobile for breakfast "!!! The light changed and I was across the intersection before he even took off!!! I don't know who was more shocked. The kid in the IROC or me!!!! Good times good times!!! Didn't buy it cause being 17 years old at the time insurance payments would've killed me!!! Plus, I didn't have the money for it either 😕
@@MrCliner96 Obviously the guy didn't know how to drive his car......I had a 1990 IROC-Z and was spankin those cars including rustangs all day long. I currently own a 1996 Camaro Z28 SS Has over 330hp and 350 ft lbs of torque...... Completely stock other than Long tube headers.
This was such an interesting era for Dodge/Chrysler ... Back in the late 90's and very early 2000's, I had an '87 Shadow ES and an '88 LeBaron GTS convertible, both 2.2 Turbo with 5 speed. For the day, they were very fun and enjoyable. With some work, you could get some pretty decent power out of those engines as well.
I bought an 85 Shelby charger, and actually ended up finding a GLHS engine in an old rampage for sale. The rampage is now sitting in my driveway as me and my dad get ready to start the process of eventually swapping the engine in. It even came with the # plaque, number 402. Cannot wait to be able to fix mine up and drive it!
I learned how to drive stick in an 84 blue and silver Shelby charger, the car belongs to a friend of mine in high school and we had a lot of fun with that car... numerous Music Festival trips in the early 90s with that car
Dodge has always been about the power and torque . SRT is the new age powerhouse for mopar . This nostalgia of the GLH brings me to the SRT-4 . Such a capable and potent performer .
Great 👍video and car ! You sure don't see these often. These 80s cars I am sure will gain popularity down the road. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and I remember these Chargers well .
Having had a 69' Charger R/T and a great lover of 60's cars, back in the 80's when they put the Charger name on this car I sort of balked, but now with time have really come to like them and appreciate them for what they had considering the era they were in. I think the actual GLHS cars are actually appreciating alot more in value now than what you had mentioned.
I owned an 87 GLHS model from 93-96. So much fun to drive. Unfortunately the drive shaft splines kept blowing and I could not find a NEW replacement at the time. All the small plastic vac lines were such a pain. Ended up blowing the head gaskets 3 times and had to shave the heads down twice. Thankfully a friend of mine owned a big wrecking yard. Whenever my PCV valve got cloggy the lag would set in, but then BLAST OFF !! Funnest car I ever owned though. 🚀🚀🚀
I bought a Garnet Red '87 Dodge Shelby Charger in '94.... car was pristine, although it was only 7 years old at the time. Absolutely loved the car, such a fun thing to toss around and it only asked for a head gasket once. 😉
I owned a blue with silver stripes 1984 Shelby Charger. It wasn't turbo, but it was still fast for the time. 110 hp with 135 tq. I had the 5 speed and would outrun lots of cars back then. I remember racing a Delorean, yes a Dolorean! and blowing its doors off. I miss it so much!
My friend had an 85' , maroon and silver, Shelby back in '92 (yep, I'm GenX). Compared to most other vehicles around back then, it seemed like a missile. Funny, he did blow the head gasket...in 1995.
Wow...well he had a good run with the head gasket. I ended up blowing 3 in 2 years. Had to shave the aluminum heads down twice. It did actually get abit quicker after the second shave. I also had an 89 Mustang GT back then. 4 motors and 3 trannys later...🤣🤣🤣. Loved racing in both cars though. Cayuga every Saturday night. Usually won, except when old uncle Jimmy and his 87 Grand National twin turbo showed up. The old moth baller usually beat me good. 🤣🤣🤣
I owned a blue and silver 1984 Shelby Charger, non turbo, but high output 2.2 l. 4cyl. (110 bhp). First year it was available in Canada. They originally came as 83 1/2 models in the USA. They only sold a little over 500 84's in Canada that year. Though I did wish I waited for the turbo in 85. I still loved my Shelby Charger. It was quick for its era. It handled well on smooth roads. Like most Chrycos of the 80's they were not the most rigid of bodies. So a stiff suspension on a flexy body on rough roads was a bit jiggly. The Dodge Shelby Charger was the first car sold in the USA with factory 50 series tires. In 84 they were p195/50 HR-15 inch. In 85 and later they were p205/50VR-15 inch. I wound up putting a pretty nice Alpine car audio system in my Charger. I did wish mine had A/C. because stock ventilation was weak on mine. Still a good looking car today the Shelby Charger is and was a way cool looking car in the 80's.😎👍
Nice walkthrough. I had a used 83 (carb without a turbo) I got in 89. That first year they just did a little tuning (I think it got 95HP instead of 80HP or something like that) but more on the wheels, ground effects, seats, paint, etc. It looked really cool - mine was blue with silver. With the back seats down the hatch/trunk area was pretty sizable. My sibling bought a new 85 (red with silver FI Turbo) and that was a fun car - felt fast for the time, but you could feel the turbo lag. A guy at work had bough the last year one (like in the video) and it was really nice. Note that the price for these cars went up dramatically each year as they added more and more to them from a performance standpoint. Although they were slower then the V8 Camaro Z28/Mustang GT, they were, in my opinion, more flashy due to the two tone paint job and, as you stated, limited production. Yes there were many Chargers, but these stood out as a separate car, even from the other Mopar Turbos like the Daytona/Laser. You got all the looks.
Back in the late 80's I ran with a group of bad nerds that owned GLH and GLHS Omnis and Chargers - back then you could really give C4 owners an absolute fit on most any road that wasn't a straight line. If you could shift into second gear on a left hand turn (say turning left at a stop light) then you either had your shifter bushings changed out or you were living clean - that and vapor locking carbs were an issue with a lot of these cars...
Might be able to grab the Shelby number through the VIN. If it matters to you, you could have one of the guys in the Shelby Dodge Auto Club help you out.
I have a 1990 Daytona ES with the V6, Ive owned it for 23 years, its a great car but my dream is turbo daytona or any other Mopar from the 80s. They are so fun!
I had a 86 Shelby I bought new. It's wasn't the glh but only difference was intercooler and leather wrapped steering wheel. Very fun car to drive. I did wrap the speedometer as you said.
Wow! What an insane story this car has. Greg bought 564 from me in November of 2020. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss this car, but it gives me comfort knowing it’s in great hands and has gotten much more love than I could have ever given what it truly deserves.
@@bryanbrittenham4409 Thanks Bryan, not sure about the love and attention part, but I am trying my best to preserve what I believe to be a great example of what an 80s muscle car was. Not to mention as you know, I owned 0815 brand new and that was the car I owned when I started dating my now wife and also the car we owned when we got married. Sadly 0815 was totaled, so this car has sentimental value to me.
I own 86 GLHS #117 and 87 GLHS #306, as well as some GLH Omnis and these have to be some of the best all around fun cars! They are harder and harder to find parts.for,.but the 2.2 liter engine platform, which is what was offered in both years of these cars, not the 2.5, is a very solid engine. The basic stuff for maintenance is getting harder to find, but still available.with some searching. Its too bad that Dodge didn't enjoy the aftermarket following that the Camaro and the Fox body Mustang still enjoy.
You are right! I imagine it’s only because of the numbers they sold on those that there isn’t as much aftermarket support. I always think there should be a business for all the “uncommon” cars that need parts, maybe a bit higher priced compared to more common components, but there is def demand for parts for some of the more uncommon cars
Yes Sr.. totally agree!!!. Kick ass ride you`ve got out there. It shows the Knowledge and wisdom, coming from Chairman Lee and his buddy, Carrol Shelby. My personal preference gear or options, are the ones like you show here, specially the 5 speed gear box. Good and remarkable numbers you told, 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile performance, and I guess is due the unmatched Weight-HP ratio, for those crazy 80`s. My personal opinion...there is not any reason to spend serious bucks in a late model car, japanese or European, for fun driving. Beautiful car, sure you`ve got a lots of comments.
It was actually my buddy’s car. Definitely one of the most fun cars I’ve gotten to drive for the money. People get too obsessed with having the nicest/fastest vehicle but forget you can have fun in just about anything. Some of the most fun vehicles I’ve owned are clapped out $3k cars 😅
My 83 was silver with blue stripes. It ran mid 16s in the quarter. It cornered real well with the P195/50R15 tires. I did not like the shift linkage. I wasted a lot of money trying to hop up the 2.2 carbureted motor with parts from the Direct Connection catalog. In hind sight I would have been much further ahead swapping in a junkyard 2.2 turbo motor.
Mine was 87 GLHS was black with the silver stripes. I REALLY wanted a blue one, but they stopped making the blue after 85 I believe. I first fell in love with them when I saw the Maroon and Silver 87 model. It was the coolest. If I ever get one again, its gonna be BLUE with silver. Oh ya, I lived in Flamborough Ontario back then.
I see you’re in Iowa too. I wanted one of these so bad over the years. Had an 83 2.2 as my first car and always dreamed of the Shelby. Would love to see it in person some time.
Back in the 80's my dad had a blue 86 Shelby Charger from 1988-89. My dad earned a reputation as "The old man in the little blue car" (he was 40ish at the time) with the kids in high school that their 5.0 GT's could never beat (I graduated in 88, my brother was still there (1990 grad) and would overhear them talking). It was a sad day when he traded it in so my mom could get her 89 Bonneville, I never liked that Bonneville.
I still have mine from day 1 with 78000 miles in 9.0 condition , put and I put and alternator on it 2 months ago for the second time and smoked my fusible links by the battery. I need to get this fixed. The alternator was bad right out the box.

A friend of mine had one, I drove it many times. Deleted the muffler and installed a resonator tip - very nice burble. I can confirm that from a dead stop to ~55 it was as fast as a stock Fox-body Mustang GT 5 speed. We used to say: GLH Goes Like Hell, but GLHS "Goes Like Hell SOME MORE!"
55?...why not 60 or 62 as in 100kph? And these couldn't hang with a stock 5.0HO from 1987 onward, maybe a carbed 5.0 from the previous generation...maybe..
@@timsgta Agreed. I had a 85 gt and a 86 5.0 LX notchback. Had friends with IROC"s TA's GTA's. I don't recall any of us having any trouble beating these cars.

My friend Phil had a brand new 1985 Shelby Charger in black. He bought that after his 84 base Charger was hit when some girl in a restored 1962 Mercury Comet S22 ran a red light and hit him and I head on totaling both cars. He wanted a new Honda CRX, but there was a six month waiting list for those. So off to Dodge he went. Another friend and I were there with him and the other friend bought one of the very few Shelby Rampages. It was burgundy with silver accents. It had everything that the Shelby Charger had minus the turbo, so his was the base 2.2.liter four with the manual 5 speed transmission. Both were great fun. Still wish Mike still had the Rampage.
My Mom had a 2.2L Turbo Sundance, twin exhaust. Was easily the meanest sounding 4-cyl. I've heard to this day. Light, fun car to drive - sad that I flipped it at 16. It was really quite nice - excpet it went through 2-head gaskets in less than 77K.
Had an '85 GLH (non Shelby) back in the late 90s. That thing was a blast to drive daily ! Always wish I had kept her. I believe the magazine tests had it handling within a tick or two of that years 911. Pulling 911 Gs in a friggin Omni? YES PLEASE !
80s MOPAR was actually pretty cool. It wasn't a great decade for performace, but that went to all makes. Chrysler managed to insert some of the muscle car attitude into their little FWD boxes. Torque steer out the wazoo, and lots of dubious fit and finish, but attitude...they did have that attitude and were pretty fun to drive.
Oh I remember these cars and the Shadow and Omni these cars was quick...I remember when they came out with the VNT a system to try and eliminate turbo lag...the 80's ruled
I always feel like I was born in the wrong generation. Although there are a few notable cars I enjoy from the 90s on, 80’s and earlier are typically my preference. Just such a fun raw driving experience before the turn of the century
I bought a Shelby Charger that was less than a year old when I was in college. Wish I still had it today. I drove the hell out of that car and went through a lot of expensive tires. I also had a 454 Chevelle. Wish I still had that car too.
I use to own 1 while stationed in the Army [#694} lol, the credit union on post tried getting me a Grand National or Sweet red Shelby lancer but they were too much money at the time. I was disappointed until they said but we can get you this limited addition Shelby GLHS! I said hell yeah and use to do battle with the Irocs & Mustangs boy what fun oh and Starions too

As a "Mopar" guy that was interested in the 60's early 70's cars.. I joined a Dodge sales team in 1985... Then in '87 I remember these being delivered to our dealer and shaking my head in lack of cubic inches and "trying" to be a muscle car.. But really it was me in denial of how the car world was changing.. Thought they were respectable for what they were.. Took many photos of them new off the truck.. So long ago now..

Heard one about a farmer that sold a Lebaron K I believe, with the Jet Astra. He didn't know it was Mitsu powered. When the buyers showed him the underhood tags, he blew a gasket and sold it extra cheap!

The most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a car, and I've owned a '70 Charger and a '69 Coronet. I've owned GLHS #0075 since 2009, with no interest to sell it. It's my forever car.
For those who claim that a GLHS is not a "true" Shelby, I suggest you read up on the GLHS production. They were bought by Shelby, shipped to his plant in CA, modified by his team, and sold through select dealerships exactly as he did with the early Mustangs. Not like todays Shelby Mustangs which are Shelby only by name and built by Ford. Except with just a dew exceptions.

I was an original owner of 87 GLHS 0815. I sold it in 1990 when I got an assignment to the United Kingdom. That was the car that I owned when my wife and I started dating. Ever since that time, I have wanted another 87 GLHS and I started getting serious about buying about two years ago. About two weeks after this video posted on here, I ended up buying the car featured in this video (564). This specific car was virtually unmolested, very little and minor rust, and all the Shelby bits were there (minus the Koni struts). This care really was in GREAT shape! Since bringing this car home, I have spent that past couple months taking care of a bunch of nit noid things to bring it as close as I can back to the way they came off the dealership floor. As long as I own this car, it will be just a cruiser and show car that I hope to show people just what 80's muscle was like.

I bought one new In 1987 from Papas Dodge in New Britain, CT. From a 25 mph roll it was faster than my friends new 87 vette. I sold it in 1993 with about 80,000 miles on it. Had one turbo change and I actually broke the steering rack drifting around a corner wide open in 2nd gear. Saw one at Englishtown NJ get into the 12’s in the quarter. It had a 5th injector installed in the intake plenum, ran 18 pounds of boost and had slicks. It was a fun car in its day.

I've driven a basically stock SRT4 Neon and it felt faster than it should be. I think they were rated around 240 horsepower but It felt closer to about 280ish. Maybe Dodge under-rated the horsepower figures on purpose?

I ordered a brand new 85 Shelby ( 1st yr with turbo) with no A/C and only a rear defogger as an additional option from the factory. I could outrun IROC Camaros and 5.0 mustangs from the same era with that little car. I wish I had upgraded to the GLH version in 87 but I ended up getting a family car next. That Shelby was a blast to drive back then!

The FWD Mopar sports coupes are revolutionary. It's common today to see a FWD sports car,but this was the first small compact Turbo inline 4. Plus it's got that boxy, 80s look that AE86 bois would like..
And it's faster than the AE86, even with the Turbo I hot air engine.

Back in 1988 my buddy had one of these. We took it to Ocean City, Md for a weekend and I have such nostalgic memories in it. He had a tune/chip and couple Direct Connection Mopar upgrades and it gave IROC-Z and 5.0 Mustangs absolute fits…. it wasn’t faster…. but they weren’t either lol.

Every dodge or chrysler made with a factory turbo is drop dead beautiful to me...I don't care if it's the Charger, the Omni, or even the Caravan, if it has a factory turbo, i love it and think it's beautiful. The GLHS cars are some of the baddest on the planet .
The speedo overlay went to 135 in the OMNI GLHS ! No shifter bushings on the '86 and '87 GLHS cars because they are rod linkage originally. The plastic ends on the linkage fatigue with age etc....it is nice to convert them over to heim joint so that the linkage cannot pop off. Nice video, these cars deserve all the attention they can get!

There are still pivot bushings in the rod linkage. Don't forget to remind people to weld the pivot pin solid to the bracket on the differential. They are press fit from the factory and they work loose over time.

@@watzonda2b I'm still so frustrated. With all the people I have talked to, I still don't know of any other GLHS that had the Shelby stickered speedo replaced under warranty. All I have is the lousy dealer sticker in the door jamb as proof.
My dad and i played with alot of these back in the 90's. We would but them with blown head gaskets for next nothing. Sometimes people would give them to us for free to get them out of thier yard.
Thr first one we go running and running good, when we hit second gear my eyes blurred and i couldnt see anything untio we hit 4th.

It is a Shelby Charger GLHS. Not a Dodge, Shelby cars was listed as the manufacture. I bought one new in 1987 and just got rid of it 5 years ago. I brought that car to Germany when I was in the Army and drove it on the Autobahn. I could bury the speedometer and almost hit redline in 5th gear.
Unlike the 86 GLHS, you are correct - it does not say Dodge anywhere on the vehicle. So yes, you are right. Titling aside, it’s undeniably a souped up Dodge Charger lol this was my GLHS, #564. I now own #465.
I owned an 86 GLHS Omni and the Chargers were a tick slower but were (in my opinion) better looking. Great to see a nice piece of these as I'm still very fond of them and they were sleepers "back in the day" and were a riot as a daily driver car. I kept a diary of my ownership and would happy to share it. In the late 80's these cars were a match for about anything else from the era. These days a lot of cars run mid 14 quarter miles though.

If I had more room and time I would def like to add one to the garage, but I already am out of room and have too many ideas for the junk I already own lol. And very true pretty much anything that isn’t an economy car or SUV runs 14s stock these days, heck even some suvs and economy cars run that stock lol.

I own two Shelby chargers and a Shelby z 87 Daytona turbo2 5-speed. If anybody's looking to build these cars stock any of the turbo ones with the old carburetor block off plate to the left of the oil filter would be considered a turbo one. Glhs turbo twos were actually intercooled turbo ones. the 1989 common block does not have the block off plate to the left of the oil filter and is a stronger engine block with forge crank and rods from the 1989 and up turbo II. 500 horsepower is easy to maintain with the 89 common block 2.2. another note is in 1987 they came out with the 555 transmission 5-speed swapping the 555 into the turbo 2 glhs charger without raising power would increase torque from 175 to 200 lb feet just from a transmission change that also includes changing the half shafts over which are the same as the automatic and you'll want to change the hub bearings too. My 87 Shelby z Daytona had a built turbo two with 89 common block full port and polish head stock valves super 60 camshaft and rockers with new lifters and springs the stock turbo was a t3 Garrett and had tec redo the turbo to a t3 t4 hybrid with 60 trim blades and a 360 thrust bearing plate since ball bearings weren't available at the time. with 442 lb injectors running at 100 PSI at the fuel rail and 30,000 off the head and 30,000 off the block with a compression ratio of 9 to 1 a center Force clutch and 555 transmission the car ran 12.6 at 116 mph. And it did this and it's normal red exterior stock trim with t-tops and original clamshell wheels with 225 50 15 directional gatorbacks. Bush level was only initially set at 15 but would smack 18 lb and settle at 15 16 lb with a manual controller and a Shelby performance tuned computer and map from the factory. Made for a fun daily driver until I raced a supercharged Firehawk on my freeway leaving a toll plaza I popped a vacuum line while accelerating and the boost went to 21 lb ran lean pop the head gasket under acceleration but I did smoke the Firehawk. He was so pissed he wanted to know what was underneath the hood and accused me of having a twin turbo v6 and I told him no it's a four-cylinder so I pulled over and let him look underneath the hood and being the wise ass that I am I said count the wires just don't include the coil wire 😆. This is long before the high horsepower turbo cars really came to the scene. In stock form the Bosch fuel injection system is extremely dependable these cars get 27 mi to the gallon in stock form with a 5-speed and without a lead foot they were great economic fun cars to drive and the whole point is not to over rev the engine on turbo one cars but you have full throttle in the power band when the turbo kicks in revenue engine is of no benefit. The engine needs to be under load for boost to really come in hard so revving the engine is pointless. But Bill properly they are fun cars to drive and if you really like torque take a turbo one 2.5 l turbo integrate the intercooler with the stock ECU and run it on a 555 transmission and you'll have about 100 lb feet of torque more on 12 lb of boost. it's all in the tuning and what the car is going to be built for the automatic 2.5 turbos did well with the intercooler and about three to five PSI more for a fun daily driver. I've had two Shelby chargers a glh Omni and two Shelby z daytonas one stock automatic and the one I built which was a turbo two car. Those days are long gone but remember when doing timing belts on these cars there is a tool with a counterweight on it that gets the timing belt just right so you don't get that timing belt wine and the car will sound fantastic. also remember using 89 turbo equipment it upgrades the timing belt to round tooth instead of the original square tooth which is also better for timing belt wear and dependability. Great cars from Chrysler and it deserve a lot more credit than they got and just so you know the two fastest cars you can buy that ran a standing quarter mile of 14.7 was the Shelby charger glhs and the Grand national GNX yes I said GNX. At the standard Grand national but the GNX also has a standing quarter mile of 14.7. Shelby chargers just have the ability to stop and turn and handle versus the rear wheel drive counterparts but they're all American and all these cars are awesome including the mustangs Camaros trans ams Grand Nationals but I'm sorry I will have to leave out the Monte Carlo has even the super sport was nothing but a super slug and you can spank them in stock form with a non-turbo Dodge Charger. Sorry to 305 just doesn't make enough torque to move that fat ass. But Buick 3.8 turbo is a magnificent engine and also put in the 89 anniversary trans am to the 0 to 60 in 4 seconds beating the Corvette that year and that's why that car with the turbo was canceled. Don't forget the stock 224 horsepower twin cam IROC RT Daytona.... For two variations of the twin cam 2.2 turbo the Dodge built one with 224 horsepower and the Maserati head 224 horsepower. but these old l platforms would have benefited from four-wheel disc brakes all wheel drive and more turbo power and the chassis is capable of a fabricator putting in an all-wheel drive turbo system and computer system from even an evolution car or the all-wheel drive system from a minivan it is possible to make an absolute mean machine of an l-body platform with some time. It's a fuel pump block-off plate, and all it means is that it's a non common block. 1987 and 1988 TII engines both have the block-off plate. Please try not to confuse the non-TD people more than they already are.
Cool video! I had an 83 (non turbo) but always wanted a GLHS (Goes Like Hell Shelby). I remember they would run a bit harder than a 5.0 Mustang GT in the day.

I bought #236 spring of 1996 for $5000. It had 52,000 miles and was mint. I added better audio system and upgraded cat back exhaust. I owned 2 cars at time and barely drove the Shelby. I made good memories for the 1 year I owned it. I sold it 1997. I miss that little car.

Quarter mile times are spot on. They averaged around 15 seconds flat, with skilled drivers flirting with high 14s, which was plenty respectable in the mid ‘80s 😉
Nice video. I owned an '85 Dodge Shelby Charger Turbo. Had tons of fun with it. The turbo lag was crazy - you'd step on it and about 1-2 seconds later the car would take off like a rocket and pull to one side given the torque steer issue. You'd hang on for dear life giggling all the while. Test drove one of these ('87?) GLHS models too.
My 87 GLHS lagged for abit, then I replaced and modified the PCV valve and no more lag ever again. So much fun to drive.

Back in 85 I test drove a Omni GLH. The sales man was super cool. We pulled up to a light beside an IROC Z. He yelled at the kid " You wanna race that POS"!! The guy got pissed and said "I'll eat that mommy mobile for breakfast "!!! The light changed and I was across the intersection before he even took off!!! I don't know who was more shocked. The kid in the IROC or me!!!! Good times good times!!! Didn't buy it cause being 17 years old at the time insurance payments would've killed me!!! Plus, I didn't have the money for it either 😕

I had a built 86 Shelby Charger pushing 16-17 lbs of boost, that ran consistent mid 12s….when the shift linkage didn’t pop off going into 2nd!
This was such an interesting era for Dodge/Chrysler ... Back in the late 90's and very early 2000's, I had an '87 Shadow ES and an '88 LeBaron GTS convertible, both 2.2 Turbo with 5 speed. For the day, they were very fun and enjoyable. With some work, you could get some pretty decent power out of those engines as well.
I bought an 85 Shelby charger, and actually ended up finding a GLHS engine in an old rampage for sale. The rampage is now sitting in my driveway as me and my dad get ready to start the process of eventually swapping the engine in. It even came with the # plaque, number 402. Cannot wait to be able to fix mine up and drive it!

Having had a 69' Charger R/T and a great lover of 60's cars, back in the 80's when they put the Charger name on this car I sort of balked, but now with time have really come to like them and appreciate them for what they had considering the era they were in. I think the actual GLHS cars are actually appreciating alot more in value now than what you had mentioned.
I owned an 87 GLHS model from 93-96. So much fun to drive. Unfortunately the drive shaft splines kept blowing and I could not find a NEW replacement at the time. All the small plastic vac lines were such a pain. Ended up blowing the head gaskets 3 times and had to shave the heads down twice. Thankfully a friend of mine owned a big wrecking yard. Whenever my PCV valve got cloggy the lag would set in, but then BLAST OFF !! Funnest car I ever owned though. 🚀🚀🚀
I bought a Garnet Red '87 Dodge Shelby Charger in '94.... car was pristine, although it was only 7 years old at the time. Absolutely loved the car, such a fun thing to toss around and it only asked for a head gasket once. 😉
I owned a blue with silver stripes 1984 Shelby Charger. It wasn't turbo, but it was still fast for the time. 110 hp with 135 tq. I had the 5 speed and would outrun lots of cars back then. I remember racing a Delorean, yes a Dolorean! and blowing its doors off. I miss it so much!
My friend had an 85' , maroon and silver, Shelby back in '92 (yep, I'm GenX). Compared to most other vehicles around back then, it seemed like a missile. Funny, he did blow the head gasket...in 1995.
Wow...well he had a good run with the head gasket. I ended up blowing 3 in 2 years. Had to shave the aluminum heads down twice. It did actually get abit quicker after the second shave. I also had an 89 Mustang GT back then. 4 motors and 3 trannys later...🤣🤣🤣. Loved racing in both cars though. Cayuga every Saturday night. Usually won, except when old uncle Jimmy and his 87 Grand National twin turbo showed up. The old moth baller usually beat me good. 🤣🤣🤣
I owned a blue and silver 1984 Shelby Charger, non turbo, but high output 2.2 l. 4cyl. (110 bhp). First year it was available in Canada. They originally came as 83 1/2 models in the USA.
They only sold a little over 500 84's in Canada that year. Though I did wish I waited for the turbo in 85. I still loved my Shelby Charger. It was quick for its era. It handled well on smooth roads.
Like most Chrycos of the 80's they were not the most rigid of bodies. So a stiff suspension on a flexy body on rough roads was a bit jiggly.
The Dodge Shelby Charger was the first car sold in the USA with factory 50 series tires. In 84 they were p195/50 HR-15 inch. In 85 and later they were p205/50VR-15 inch.
I wound up putting a pretty nice Alpine car audio system in my Charger. I did wish mine had A/C. because stock ventilation was weak on mine.
Still a good looking car today the Shelby Charger is and was a way cool looking car in the 80's.😎👍

I had a used 83 (carb without a turbo) I got in 89. That first year they just did a little tuning (I think it got 95HP instead of 80HP or something like that) but more on the wheels, ground effects, seats, paint, etc. It looked really cool - mine was blue with silver. With the back seats down the hatch/trunk area was pretty sizable.
My sibling bought a new 85 (red with silver FI Turbo) and that was a fun car - felt fast for the time, but you could feel the turbo lag.
A guy at work had bough the last year one (like in the video) and it was really nice. Note that the price for these cars went up dramatically each year as they added more and more to them from a performance standpoint.
Although they were slower then the V8 Camaro Z28/Mustang GT, they were, in my opinion, more flashy due to the two tone paint job and, as you stated, limited production. Yes there were many Chargers, but these stood out as a separate car, even from the other Mopar Turbos like the Daytona/Laser. You got all the looks.
Back in the late 80's I ran with a group of bad nerds that owned GLH and GLHS Omnis and Chargers - back then you could really give C4 owners an absolute fit on most any road that wasn't a straight line. If you could shift into second gear on a left hand turn (say turning left at a stop light) then you either had your shifter bushings changed out or you were living clean - that and vapor locking carbs were an issue with a lot of these cars...
ended up buying one last year, only thing that sucks is that the plaque with the number is missing

I had a 86 Shelby I bought new. It's wasn't the glh but only difference was intercooler and leather wrapped steering wheel. Very fun car to drive. I did wrap the speedometer as you said.

Wow! What an insane story this car has. Greg bought 564 from me in November of 2020. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss this car, but it gives me comfort knowing it’s in great hands and has gotten much more love than I could have ever given what it truly deserves.
@@bryanbrittenham4409 Thanks Bryan, not sure about the love and attention part, but I am trying my best to preserve what I believe to be a great example of what an 80s muscle car was. Not to mention as you know, I owned 0815 brand new and that was the car I owned when I started dating my now wife and also the car we owned when we got married. Sadly 0815 was totaled, so this car has sentimental value to me.
I own 86 GLHS #117 and 87 GLHS #306, as well as some GLH Omnis and these have to be some of the best all around fun cars! They are harder and harder to find parts.for,.but the 2.2 liter engine platform, which is what was offered in both years of these cars, not the 2.5, is a very solid engine. The basic stuff for maintenance is getting harder to find, but still available.with some searching. Its too bad that Dodge didn't enjoy the aftermarket following that the Camaro and the Fox body Mustang still enjoy.
You are right! I imagine it’s only because of the numbers they sold on those that there isn’t as much aftermarket support. I always think there should be a business for all the “uncommon” cars that need parts, maybe a bit higher priced compared to more common components, but there is def demand for parts for some of the more uncommon cars
Yes Sr.. totally agree!!!. Kick ass ride you`ve got out there. It shows the Knowledge and wisdom, coming from Chairman Lee and his buddy, Carrol Shelby. My personal preference gear or options, are the ones like you show here, specially the 5 speed gear box. Good and remarkable numbers you told, 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile performance, and I guess is due the unmatched Weight-HP ratio, for those crazy 80`s. My personal opinion...there is not any reason to spend serious bucks in a late model car, japanese or European, for fun driving. Beautiful car, sure you`ve got a lots of comments.
It was actually my buddy’s car. Definitely one of the most fun cars I’ve gotten to drive for the money. People get too obsessed with having the nicest/fastest vehicle but forget you can have fun in just about anything. Some of the most fun vehicles I’ve owned are clapped out $3k cars 😅
I owned a 1983 Shelby Charger, Blue and Silver, Non turbo. It was a fun car!
My 83 was silver with blue stripes. It ran mid 16s in the quarter. It cornered real well with the P195/50R15 tires. I did not like the shift linkage. I wasted a lot of money trying to hop up the 2.2 carbureted motor with parts from the Direct Connection catalog. In hind sight I would have been much further ahead swapping in a junkyard 2.2 turbo motor.
In Canada there was blue with silver stripes versions. They might not have been Shelby cars though. My memory might be wrong.
Mine was 87 GLHS was black with the silver stripes. I REALLY wanted a blue one, but they stopped making the blue after 85 I believe. I first fell in love with them when I saw the Maroon and Silver 87 model. It was the coolest. If I ever get one again, its gonna be BLUE with silver. Oh ya, I lived in Flamborough Ontario back then.

Back in the 80's my dad had a blue 86 Shelby Charger from 1988-89. My dad earned a reputation as "The old man in the little blue car" (he was 40ish at the time) with the kids in high school that their 5.0 GT's could never beat (I graduated in 88, my brother was still there (1990 grad) and would overhear them talking). It was a sad day when he traded it in so my mom could get her 89 Bonneville, I never liked that Bonneville.
I still have mine from day 1 with 78000 miles in 9.0 condition , put and I put and alternator on it 2 months ago for the second time and smoked my fusible links by the battery. I need to get this fixed. The alternator was bad right out the box.
That's awesome to have owned a car that long, lots of memories with it, I'm sure. And Damn that sucks to hear. Hope you're able to get it all sorted out!

A friend of mine had one, I drove it many times. Deleted the muffler and installed a resonator tip - very nice burble. I can confirm that from a dead stop to ~55 it was as fast as a stock Fox-body Mustang GT 5 speed.
We used to say: GLH Goes Like Hell, but GLHS "Goes Like Hell SOME MORE!"
55?...why not 60 or 62 as in 100kph? And these couldn't hang with a stock 5.0HO from 1987 onward, maybe a carbed 5.0 from the previous generation...maybe..

My friend Phil had a brand new 1985 Shelby Charger in black. He bought that after his 84 base Charger was hit when some girl in a restored 1962 Mercury Comet S22 ran a red light and hit him and I head on totaling both cars. He wanted a new Honda CRX, but there was a six month waiting list for those. So off to Dodge he went. Another friend and I were there with him and the other friend bought one of the very few Shelby Rampages. It was burgundy with silver accents. It had everything that the Shelby Charger had minus the turbo, so his was the base 2.2.liter four with the manual 5 speed transmission. Both were great fun. Still wish Mike still had the Rampage.

My Mom had a 2.2L Turbo Sundance, twin exhaust. Was easily the meanest sounding 4-cyl. I've heard to this day. Light, fun car to drive - sad that I flipped it at 16. It was really quite nice - excpet it went through 2-head gaskets in less than 77K.

80s MOPAR was actually pretty cool. It wasn't a great decade for performace, but that went to all makes. Chrysler managed to insert some of the muscle car attitude into their little FWD boxes. Torque steer out the wazoo, and lots of dubious fit and finish, but attitude...they did have that attitude and were pretty fun to drive.
Several of my friends owned those cars in the 80's. They were certainly quick and fun back then.
Glad to report they are still relatively quick and fun in 2021!

Oh I remember these cars and the Shadow and Omni these cars was quick...I remember when they came out with the VNT a system to try and eliminate turbo lag...the 80's ruled
I always feel like I was born in the wrong generation. Although there are a few notable cars I enjoy from the 90s on, 80’s and earlier are typically my preference. Just such a fun raw driving experience before the turn of the century
I bought a Shelby Charger that was less than a year old when I was in college. Wish I still had it today. I drove the hell out of that car and went through a lot of expensive tires. I also had a 454 Chevelle. Wish I still had that car too.

I use to own 1 while stationed in the Army [#694} lol, the credit union on post tried getting me a Grand National or Sweet red Shelby lancer but they were too much money at the time. I was disappointed until they said but we can get you this limited addition Shelby GLHS! I said hell yeah and use to do battle with the Irocs & Mustangs boy what fun oh and Starions too
