    Tip: Use axle grease on the tapper to avoid the metal from falling into the oil pan and potentially damaging the engine.

      @@jordancasavant9923 yes it did. I ended up drilling out the old threads that were ruined. Then loaded the tap with red axle grease and using a ratcheting tap from GearWrench cut new threads like butter. Axle grease made shaving clean up a breeze. The Dakota is still running strong today and oil changes flow much faster now lol.

    Thanks for your video. During my last oil change, my plug tightened but I could tell it wasn't going to tighten enough and I didn't have a couple extra hours to make any repairs let alone getting an oversized plug from the nearest parts store. I snuggled it the best I could, added oil and left a sheet of cardboard on the garage floor to gage how bad the drips would be the next morning. Not bad, an out 2 to 4 drips . So far after 4000 miles and a cold winter with maybe a cup low, I plan to go the oversized plug route instead of the oil pan.

    There are oil drain plug insert kits of different sizes. You need a large drill and drill bit from the kit. Heli-coil may have the kit. AutoZone may have it. You may need a drill bit set. A Big-sert kit may be needed since it has a steel insert.

    • @FixingWithPassion

      Well the hold Idea it to get the threads started as straight as possible
      so the new plug will seal good. You can play around with different
      types of seals for the new plug also.

    I remember once I had a stripped oil pan bolt on my saturn astra after doing my oil change on a sunday. Pretty much all the stores were closed, and homedepot was open and didnt have an m14 bolt. I ended up using an old spark plug to seal it, and it didnt leak at all. I then just used a longer drain bolt and it sealed it up tight

    The reason your oversized plug didn't work at first is because you need to get the exact size as your original plug, the oversized specification will be slightly larger than a standard plug. So in your case a 1/2" oversized plug would have worked, the 5/8" oversized is meant to cut a 5/8" stripped hole. Thanks for your video, i will try tapping mine today

  • @413button
    @413button 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    FYI, "Plug Tap" on the tap package does not imply that the tool is for tapping a spark plug hole. It is describing the cutting chamfer type, which is a plug chamfer or 3 to 5 threads for a through hole. A "Taper" chamfer is 7 to 10 threads for making it easier to start the thread and a "Bottom" chamfer is 1 to 2 threads for a blind hole.

    If you went to tractor supply and bought a long bolt the same size as your original oil plug. Then cut it, to about twice the length of your original. You wouldn't have had to tap it. You can see you have good threads deeper in the pan that your original plug doesn't touch. You actually could have saved about $7 bucks and not worry about shavings of metal in your pan from tapping without grease on your tap..

    I had to repair the drain plug threads on a motorcycle years ago. I put an air hose in the filler hole somewhat sealed off with a piece of rubber hose and blew out the shavings as I tapped it, then poured some oil back through it to wash out any shavings that were still in it. I would imagine an air hose attached to the dip stick tube would do the same thing on a car (as long as the oil cap is on and pcv is blocked off). Hopefully the filter will catch any remaining crumbs.
    It also looks like your "original" drain plug had already been replaced with a self tapping repair bolt. A stock bolt wouldn't have the slots cut into it.

    Never use an over size plug or any other sort of self tapping plug. These plugs dont magically stop cutting threads the next time you change your oil. The result is you will cut new threads into the new threads that will strip after a couple times of removal/installation. Dont be a lazy and just take the time to drill out the old threads and either helicoil or install an insert.

      @supersonic174 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends what the pitch is.. m12 x what.. here is catalog with oil sump bolt sizes, it will show a code for the correct oversized bolt for your vehicle. Look up the code and you may find it. Otherwise you could try a code that has similar size original bot. Im no expert, my bolt size was m14 x 1.5 , and the thread was rooted as. I just thought well its got to be quite a bit larger than 15 mm because I allready made the hole bigger, so I went for the same one on this video a 5/8 one..It still has a small leak though, Im thinking of tightening it a bit at a time until it stops leaking, without going past maybe 30 Nm.

      James Pinckard ....Used a squirt can Shot some used oil in the hole flushed some of the shavings out. Then took the oil I drained out....put in back in leaving the drain plug out....letting the used oil flush the small shavings out. Worked perfect! New oil/filter good as new! Thanks for viewing!

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try to get a sharp straight screw driver in behind the oil plug bolt and
      oil pan (you might have to sharpen it with a file to make it really sharp)
      ... while tapping it with a hammer. This might get it started or
      to "pop out some" until you get it out far enough to get some vice
      grips or something to pull on/out the bolt while turning it.

    • @escobar27je

      Did you end up being able to take that oil pan plug out? If you did, how did you do it ?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used a small screw driver wedged it between the bolt and pan while trying to turn the bolt forcing it slowly out. Also vice grips works wounders.

    I cut the thread the same way you did in the video and tightened the new oil drain plug to 25 NM with a torque wrench.(spec) Everything was perfect, but after 2 days I can see a few drops of oil under the car in the driveway. I re-tightened it to 30NM and today I found another drop of oil under the car.
    Any suggestions?

    1st view I think.. this video doesn't relate to me but I just found your channel today and subbed instantly. reason being I am in possession of a 2000 mercury sable LS (the taurus' prettier twin sister) that has within the past week developed what I call haass (hyper active alarm system syndrome)' stock anti- theft system randomly going into panic mode for no obvious reason. while trouble shooting found this channel. still haven't fixed that but I did get the heater working and some of the vacuum leaks sorted out thanks to your videos. I assume the alarm issue is a bad door latch cuz while I'm driving it the door ajar and dome lights start flickering thought I unplugged the drivers from the rest of the system and for a few days all was good but today it started doing it again. is this an issue you are familiar with? any advice would be helpful

      Hey thanks for subbing! Yea you have a switch/door sensor somewhere going bad or making poor contact. I had a dodge caravan that did the same thing from St louis to Charleston W.V. one time (8 hr drive) ugh...Blinking dinging. Turns out it was a door sensor. Start looking at the door sensors. Rain will do strange things sometimes to doors and sensors. Any check engine lights? Start there also.

    You started with an over sized plug. That's why it didn't feel right to begin with. You need to look into Eco plugs before ruining a pan by wrongfully resizing the pan. If you teach a bunch of people the wrong procedure you are going to have a ton of people cracking aluminum pans because they are forcefully changing the thread pitch. That's why mechanics use helicoil kits instead of trying to up the oil pan drain hole size. I understand you want to teach people how to do those things, just make sure you are teaching the right way.... not the wrong way.

      dude those are pretty cool, but it protrudes into the pan, and goes above the bottom. The bottom is where all the sediment gathers, you want to be able to drain the whole thing.
      But definitely a innovative design and works in a pinch.
