Tiny fear demon is one of my favorite monsters-of-the-week. And the gag at the end with the "actual size" inscription---perfection. I love this episode, it's one of the many gems of S4.
@@emclaire7027 I actually think it's one of the weaker episodes. But I never enjoyed Halloween specials. Perhaps because I have no relations to that holiday.

no, just like it's not at all spoilerish to say that each season of the show runs from fall to spring, with no episodes set in the summer. just like it's not spoilerish to say that episodes are about 43 minutes long. these are very basic parameters of the show and not plot elements.

(Yes, it took me fifteen years to work out that that was the joke.)
Same thing can be said about problems that may seem small but become bigger over time. (if we can categorize the most difficult problems are the ones that can be prevented early on and the more trivial ones are dealt with sooner)

You are maybe too young to appreciate this but 20 years ago when this was made there were ABSOLUTELY college professors like Walsh. I had several like her.

It's because people our age are the professors now.
I graduated in '93 and at the start of my first year we had a particular math lecturer. No one could follow him as we had very diverse backgrounds (combined electronics and computer science core class - about 100 students). It was pretty well discussed amongst us all that everyone had been struggling for weeks and he didn't hide his disdain at having to teach non-math students.
During one particularly bad lecture, someone asked if he could just go over what had just been said as everyone was lost. His response to the whole body of students was 'It's my job to teach you these things, not to make sure you can learn it'. There were so many complaints that soon after they stopped him from teaching undergrads.
@@alangarde2928 I had a philosophy professor that would give out actual numerical points and grades, but not specify what you were doing wrong (at least) early in the class. As a result a lot of people dropped. Looked him up and saw miles of complaints against him not teaching, just making up grades, because he wouldn't show to any student how he arrived at any grade. He would literally just let you build arguments, then dock points, but circle nothing, discuss nothing, write nothing, just "-15 pts" or the dread "✔" grade. Maybe that was his goal. His argument. I'll never know. 🤷🏽♀️

Absolutely agree. This episode came out when I was at University and I knew a couple professors that definitely would have said something very similar.
I feel like English professors are always weirdly intense. Like the opposite of high school English teachers.
I live in a college town, and I've heard about teachers just like that. Though MOST of the college teachers here don't care if you come to class. They've got that "You're out of high school, it's up to you to decide if you're going to come to class. If you don't then you may not get the information you need and may fail the class, but that's up to you". They'll still do like Alley's examples of making the material available to you, helping you if you need it, but if you don't come to class they don't get pissed.

Halloween Giles and Chainsaw Giles are iconic.

Sorry alley, but I went to college in the 90s and the college culture was simply different in most 4 year institutions. The toughness and unyielding attitudes of professors was often considered part of the difficulty of the degree. It’s funny to me when younger reactors watch shows from the 90s and earlier, because they so often doubt things that we simply took for granted as being normal.

Prof's ran the gamut. Some where chill and laid back, others were deeply intense. I'm sure those who taught the weed-out classes were deeply intense. But then, intro level classes would not be the weed-out classes, so it's odd that this particular prof is teaching one.

Even Oz who is usually the levelheaded one wants to smack Parker, Also Walter Jones is in this episode who was the original black mighty morphing power ranger, he plays the guy who gives the frat the book with the symbol. Anyas afraid of bunnies.
I met Jones and St John at a con. They're awesome cool with fans.

She's so much happier watching Buffy than Angel 🤣😅
Its understandable. Buffy is at its peak in terms of acting, writing and directing. Angel is still rough around the edges and hasn't fully formed its identity at this point. I suspect Alley will really get more excited for Angel when season 2 rolls around.

One of my professors for a GE class once cut me off when I was explaining I missed class because I was in the hospital. She told me if I can’t take school seriously to drop her class because “college isn’t for everyone”. Those kind of professors are for sure out there.

... I had an Educational Psychology professor who was like that. She failed me because I had to travel abroad for a family emergency during the day of her test, and she wouldn't allow it done before, later or online (all my History professors - my major - were very chill about it)...

Best part is remembering what happened on their first halloween. That's why they all dressed as they did this year for halloween. Between Joan of Arc, James Bond, and GOD, they will be better prepared this time.

When I was at university in NZ back in the early 90s I actually had a philosophy lecturer tell me to shut the fuck up and never ask questions in his Philosophy 101 class... :/
A friend of mine was post-grad philosophy so I told him about the exchange and he told me that was entirely normal for that lecturer and advised me to switch to another class.
He then also explained to me that as far as many lecturers were concerned, undergraduates were lower than viruses in their eyes, and not to expect to be treated as a human until after I'd graduated. I didn't finish the year.
the little monster is an analogy of our problems. At some point in life we are given a terrifying fear, which does not let us think well, or make good decisions, or not sleep, like an exam, a debt and after a while you realice, it was silly to fear or lose sleep over that little thing. I remember in high school the stress of the tests. i felt like the end of the world if i disapproved (a dumb thing to think but some people are like that). Now when i have a problem i remember this ep. i try to see if it is a big problem o just a tiny and silly one. nothing to fear but...
I love your face at seeing Giles. I also love you going at Walsh. I was not a psych major, but it’s nice to get confirmation that psych professors are not like that. I had a biology professor that was like her, but most of my professors were cool and totally understood when life got in the way, just so long as I sent them an email letting them know if I couldn’t make it.

I've always loved this episode. It was the 1st episode I ever saw when I was too young to be watching Buffy. The experience of watching this episode alone at night as a kid was fantastic, but terrifying.

This is the first Buffy episode I can remember watching and it was when it originally aired.
Awesome reaction to this episode - Fear Itself I think is the best all 'round "MOTW" ep of the show to this point, with the show firing on all cylinders.
The writing, acting, effects, humour, premise etc - and the cast particularly seems to gel on screen. As a bonus we get actual character dev/moments for all the major cast members.
I like to contrast this to the season 1 episode "Nightmares" and how these characters have changed. Their fears are definitely more adult/mature.
Season 4 is loaded with GREAT episodes even though the main season plot is not popping.

“Fear Itself” lowkey makes me afraid when it’s a title of a Buffy episode.
Season 4 is not my favourite, but it does have some great episodes, this being one of them. What could possibly top Giles with a sombrero? Yes, Giles with a freaking chainsaw.

You're waiting because the emotional roller coaster is climbing that first hill. After a couple of bumps near the top you'll screaming down the the track of some of the best episodes and plot twists over the next couple of seasons that will give you emotional whiplash.
I actually did have a college professor who once said if your not dyingvthen you can come to class,, even drag your hospital bed right in,,, Man i really hated Math class then
You just know that if someone did bring a hospital bed in the professor would get pissed off.

I guess college has changed a lot in the last twenty years. I had a history professor who was so proud of the fact that he was just like that, that he spent the first hour of our first class with him putting up pictures from negative student evaluations and making fun of them. He was especially amused by the one from a single mother whom he had dropped a whole grade point after her phone went off in class. Her kids babysitter called, there was an emergency and her toddler had to be taken to the doctor. He didn't consider that a valid excuse.
OKAY I OFFICIALLY NEED TO SAY THIS. ONCE is happenstance, TWICE is a coincidence, BUT THREE TIMES?! Something fucky is up. Ally THREE times now you have said the exact same thing as Willow at the exact same time. "Boys are so fragile" "You gotta! (take psych)" and now "You can come" to invite sad Zander. Girl you and Willow are the same person.
Willow is the best, so it makes sense that a lot of people reacting to the show love her. She is very relatable and possibly the most real character outside of Xander. Although a lot of people dislike Xander, probably because he does so much when it comes to the more childish emotions and responses.

The person wearing the mask who Buffy hits might be a writer callout to one time when someone from Knott's Berry Farm jumped out to scare Sarah Michelle Gellar - the actress actually had a black belt (can't remember rn what martial art).

If you think about it... This episode is a sequel (same premise) to the Nightmares S1 episode.
This is the best Halloween episode ever, and I adore cabin in the woods. And Whedon wrote them both, the dialog and sense of humor are totally the same. I don't watch much horror, so I don't know which movies are being referenced, but since Whedon tends to do his homework, I'm sure bunches. Glad you enjoyed.
I absolutely love this episode. Another note about Giles and Halloween.. he's British and Halloween is not commonly celebrated, especially back then/for Giles' generation.
Also, this season has a few things/episodes that are 😬 not my favourite. But it also has one coming up that is really unique and one of my top 5 episodes ever. If you haven't gotten to it yet, you'll nerd out SO HARD for it.

The Halloween episodes are probably my favorite.
My biggest shock about college was that the professors DON'T take attendance and don't seem to care if you actually come to class. You're expected to manage your own time and drive your own learning.

Professor Walsh is quite similar to some Engineering professors I knew.
My favourite refused to learn anyone's name, but did memorize everyone's student ID number, and would address you by number if he saw you on campus.
Really. He would address you as "913112" if that was your number.

I also have a BA in Psy and agree with you on the professors. Prof. Walsh acts more like the math teachers I dealt with.
Season 1 of Angel and Season 4 of Buffy are a little rough because they are both finding their way into new territory. . Enjoy episodes like this while you can and the Halloween ones never disappoint.

4:05 That set, the Sunnydale street, was constructed during Season 3 inside the 3 warehouses where Buffy was filmed. Mutant Enemy offices, including Buffy and Angel (and later Firefly) writers room, were there. Actually Joss's window office was on one of the street walls.

THIS episode made me like the season 4. You know we was used to be in high school. Is the series will be interesting anymore ... But Yeah Halloween. What a great show !!!
