I really love that the Mayor, at the literal eve of his Ascention, when he had a lot of things to do and bugs to eat, took out the time to cook up a get-out-of-jail plan for Faith, get that gizmo, record that video, and hired that demon to deliver them. He really cared.

The thing is - he cared in a shitty way. He DID really care - but he was evil. He didn't tell her to get away and take care of herself. He told her to "go out with a bang".

I think going out with a bang was intended to be Buffy stopping or killing Faith but with Faith in Buffy’s body. He’s always had … well … faith in Faith. To the outside world “Buffy” just defeated “Faith” and she’s taken into custody now.
“Buffy” is now free to live her life however Faith sees it now. While Buffy will have to face Faith’s consequences. I think that’s how Richard saw this playing out.

I love that juxtaposition in this episode - Faith trying to play on a potential nerve of Joyce not hearing from Buffy. Buffy bursting through the window. The "Hi Mom" exchange between them. The love and surety on Joyce's face. It was never in question that Buffy would save her, and despite Joyce's pain, they both knew that. Joyce trusts her daughter completely. When you think of S3, their relationship has come so far 💗

that 5 by 5 at the end is still one of my favourite moments
One of the things I loved most about this episode is the brief bit of connection between Joyce and Faith. The look on Joyce's face when Faith describes how it feels to be forgotten. Kristine Sutherland did such a good job.
She really did and that was such a moment. Faith saying “she was over us a long time ago, Joyce” was such a great bit of insight into Faith. BtVS’s really good at the unexpected but gutting parallels.
I think the Mayor's video really underlines both that he genuinely loved Faith, and that his love is a terrible, unhealthy one. He makes it clear that without him, he thinks she's not going to make it in life and also countersigns her deep, deep feelings of inadequacy to Buffy by giving her a device to pretend to be her.
For me, it continues a Buffyverse theme that whilst soulless creatures can love in some form, that "love" is always ultimately selfish, self-serving and effed up.
To be fair, without the Mayor's intervention, Faith would probably have been killed by the hit-Watchers, or spent a very long time locked up by the Council if Buffy got her first.
@@Carabas72 Yes, but, he could have used his still remaining resources to help get out, get away. Instead, it's still his own agenda of what do, put ahead of what would actually most benefit her.

Using his still remaining resources to help Faith get out was precisely what he did. And he has no soul, he doesn't have the ability to even understand what would benefit Faith, and even less ability to arrange for that.
And he is not following his own agenda here. The entirety of his agenda was becoming a giant snake demon.
@@Carabas72 I think we actually largely agree here. He's soulless so he can't really love her. So his actions don't really benefit her. And it didn't help her get out. Even if she were able to keep hiding as Buffy - which he must have known was highly unlikely - she would never get to be herself again. I also think it would have been far simpler to use his resources to, say, help her to a new country. To get out in that sense.
There seems to be an agreement that the Mayor was soulless, but I don't think that was the case. He said he sold his soul, BUT that phrase usually means to be collected at death. Not lost immediately. The old legends of musicians selling their soul for talent were still believed to have their souls at the time. Along with any "sold their soul for *".
The Buffy vs Faith fights are some of my favorites in the entire series. The ones from this episode are on par with the final one in season 3, IMO. Love your reactions!

I know I'm late to the party with your videos but I love the next generation's reactions to Buffy. I watched when it originally aired and waiting a week for an episode and an entire summer for a new season was soooo depressing. I love that this show still holds up after 20+ years.

Accents, mannerisms, body movements... Sarah WAS Faith and Eliza WAS Buffy.
This is the body switch episode to end all body switch episodes IMO.

I have 2 favourite snips from the Buffy series, one of which is in this episode. When Xander fries himself with the zapper gun, followed by Nicholas Brendon's brilliant physical comedy stunned reaction, I lose my sh!t everytime I re-watch (many)! I can't imagine what Brendon was thinking when the show's wardrobe gave him that shirt/vest combo, too.

I just looove this episode. I just looove Faith. She is such a wonderful character. That ending...OMG.
Remember, "Slayer Vision". Slayers have prophetic/spiritual dreams. Buffy has them in S1 and S2, then she shares one with Faith when they're both in the hospital. So it makes sense that they would have one before Faith wakes up. Though Buffy doesn't seem to remember that one. And as Editing Alley said, boy is that one prophetic!!!

Jumping in with your edit about watching 5x02, There were hints about **** and season 5's storyline as a whole as early as S3. Funnily enough, in another coma dream between Buffy and Faith.: "Miles to go. Little Miss Muffet counting down from 7-3-0." Must be their gift of prophecy.

I watch the series with a friend and her partner, the friend being the only one who don't know the show. At Dawns reveal her partner was so disappointed that she didn't freak out. She was like "hm."
When I watched it first I thought I had skipped an episode or something, I checked it like 3 times If I missed something. XD

Yep, that's how we all pretty much felt when we watched it originally, still trying to process Adam and then BAM Faith wakes up to wreak havoc. But it was actually worse because the of the WB's "This week in Buffy " promos getting us super hyped. Tuesday night was "must see TV" in the early aughts Buffy at 8 pm and Angel at 9 pm ...good times
Besides Giles, the Mayor is actually the best father figure in the BuffyVerse. He’s evil, but even in his pure evilness he loves his Faith!

Also, on the topic of Faith visiting Joyce and talking to her, it occurs to me that Spike essentially did the same thing back in season 3 when Dru left him and he kidnapped Willow and Xander to get Willow to do the love spell. Apparently the baddies enjoy taking to Joyce!

Because it has very cool episodes I never want to miss, but the primary story arc ist just not as good as the other seasons. it is weak in comparison.

i'm SOOOOOOOOOOO happy, you are at this part of the season, the next couple of episodes are PURE art.
It's kind of painful watching Faith's dreams of Buffy. Yes, Faith has cast Buffy as the villain and herself the victim, but Buffy also physically looms large in Faith's consciousness. Encroaching on Faith's sense of self and peace. Yes, Faith is delusional, but you can also see she feels deeply inadequate to Buffy. It's sad.
Faith also deeply hates herself. And that makes her hate "perfect Buffy".

This whole Faith arc stretching across both shows really cements Faith as one of the best characters.
5 by 5 is a slang term for "everything is ok." Faith uses it because it was used in the Movie Alien's by the pilot of the drop ship that takes Ripley down to the surface of the Alien planet where all the badness happens, and the Show Runners where fan's of the Alien's movies.

i'm so late due to vacation. its very subtle but dreams are half of the a slayer's powers. Buffy has prophetic dreams here and there. We saw it with the Gentleman episode this season. We saw it with the Master. We saw it with Drusilla. So it makes sense that Faith would have dreams too that are an indicator of her psyche but also of things to come. Briefly last season they were having the same dream. I don't think people pay attention to that but the lore on slayers is that they are tuned to the evil they have to fight. That lore extends into comics too

There is SO much foreshadowing in Buffy that you probably wouldn’t catch the first watch through (you’re lucky you’re editing because you can catch more of it).
This four episode Buffy/Angel arc is my absolute FAVE.

Just watching that opening dream sequence with Faith, mention of little sis, the blood and knife, and I started to tear up. Alley has watched ahead, so she's learned by now why Faith is one of my favorite characters on this show, And she's in the coolest stories.
It’s been so long since my last rewatch I’d completely forgotten when Faith showed back up. I did a spit take and made uninterpretable sounds when I realized what episode this was.
With the dreams, when there is more than one slayer at a time they can cross into each others dreams.
Also recommend you think back to their last prophetic dream. Little miss muffet counting on down from 730.

Seeing coma Faith almost justify her actions by making Buffy the bad guy is brilliant storytelling because as soon as she wakes up she goes back to her old “whack anything that moves rampage” self that we know and love, even manages to find some dark eye shadow and pvc pants
You mentioned that you found the girl carrying the teddy bear weird. It occurs to me that since Faith was not expected to wake up , she may have actually not been in a hospital. But in a long term care facility.
This would explain the teddy bear easily ( long term residents tend to have more personal possessions with them ) , as well as how run down it is ( less oversight , less stringent standards to meet , less need for a squeaky clean appearance for public image ).

It is so amusing to watch someone else be tortured by watching the series. I watched it when it was new. People looked at me odd because I watched the series and told then it was because of the writing.
Give it up for BtVS’s prophetic Slayer dreams. In Faith’s dream she and Buffy essentially switch places, from fashion choices to Buffy from Faith’s perspective being the cold murderous monster pursuing Faith and chasing her into the grave where they fight it out with only Faith emerging just as she emerges from her coma, and then Faith and Buffy fight in reality and literally switch places as Faith is freed from the dead end she was at as a wanted woman.
