My love for Spike's comedic moments are neverending.
One of my favorite moments in the whole series.
Next ep is my fave ep in the entire first half of the season. Like, c'mon. Who doesn't love that ep 😂😂😂

I’d also say This Years girl, who are you, new moon rising, a new man, and restless are also some of the best. I’m not a big fan of the plot in s4, but it has so many amazing episodes!

At the time this episode aired, I thought the bear was a goofy choice. It didn't dawn on me till recently that the reason he turned into a bear was so Buffy wouldn't have to stab a Native American to death.

This is one of the best episodes from this season. I love Spike's "wholesome holiday commercial" moment where he is out in the cold looking into the window of a vampire family enjoying their holiday meal together.
This is honestly one of my favorite comedy episodes
For me it's the next one but this one is funny too.

The Vampire Thanksgiving scene was a reference to A Christmas Carol. I didn't get it for the longest time.

Joyce is off visiting her sister Arlene and her family, she needs some emotional support as it is the anniversary of the death of one of her daughters, Celia (Killed By Death).
Between the bunny costume in "Fear Itself" and this episode, I really started to love Anya.
Anya is lowkey the best character, just how shamlessly herself she always is.
The next 4 episodes in order - I will never forget you, Hero, Something Blue and Hush. Oh my ... dont think my heart can take it

My favorite part of this episode is Willow, Xander, and Anya riding across campus on bikes like a weird modern cavalry.
I think the vamp was just talking about that he was more easily able to prey on college students before she showed up.
Yeah he meant before Buffy moved to Sunnydale from LA.
@@jb888888888 He could have as easily meant when she came to college. UC Sunnydale is far enough from her house that we never see her patrol there. It was far enough that it was a drive or bus ride.
@@adgato75 The geography of Sunnydale is variable. When Buffy moves there it's a small town (albeit one with a giant high school). At some point it develops a port and shipyard. When she graduates suddenly there's a huge University of California campus too. And then season 5:
RILEY: I've lived in Sunnydale a couple of years now. Know what I've never noticed before?
GILES: Uh, a castle?
RILEY: A big honking castle.

Giles face when saying how much he loves mushy peas ❤️ Buffy's lack of concern over how bad Xander looks and what part of help me don't you understand the part where I help you are just three of the best things about this episode.
Xander said the line at the end, "Feels right to me. We had a big fight.." you know, because of his low key terrible, terrible home life.

THAT is my favorite line of the episode. Not the bear thing lol
The actress that played joyce wanted some time off to help her own daughter who I believe was college at the time.

Saying the episodes will connect, but not expecting an Angel guest appearance had me loving at her reaction even more than I would have.
Spike telling Willow what's what in terms of how things work and that just because Hus is an "indigenous person" doesn't mean he is willing to listen after what was done to his race is a great moment because it was so blatant even compared to Giles blatancy in saying it.
Even though I quote it as well, I never understood why Spike's bear line is so quotable. Donkey saying he is going to make waffles on _Shrek_ works the same way.
One of my favorite Anya lines is "What's he like when he is evil?"
I liked the fact that Buffy and Angel never interacted.
Really enjoyed your analysis. It’s surprised me to hear a reactor open to a tv show’s attempt to address an controversial topics. It’s interesting how everyone brought a different perspective to the table (even Anya defending vengeance demons).
The sidekick brigade on bicycles was great!
I really enjoy this episode, the Spike's take on the little match girl bit, him getting the pincushion treatment with the arrows, that last shot from Buffy's POV, lol
I love how Alley gets upset that Buffy doesn't get a Thanksgiving.
Then proceeds to crap on her own family when they come to her Thanksgiving haha!

"Why don't you just go back where you came from. Things were great until you got here". Yeah kinda odd for the vampire to say to Buffy, particularly with as long as she's been there now, but it was meant to reference the whole Thanksgiving thing. But yeah doesn't really make sense, particularly from a vampire that seems kinda new, not like he was even a vamp before she got there.
I love that you ponder how Spike will fit in since he's still evil. Many people just jumped right in with "Spikes good now". Some even thinking he was a good guy now once he helped Buffy against Angelus, just to ensure he and Dru could go free.
I don't think buffy ever patroled the college campus when she was in highschool so the vampires there never really had a problem with her before but now that shes there on their "turf" they obviously have issues getting blood from people now because shes there to stop them.

@@Heldemon Come to think of it: "Why don't you just go back where you came from? Things were great until you got here" pretty much covers the Native American spirit's motivation throughout the episode. Clever writing.
Other than the original Sunday's gang, the vampires didn't seem to stick to the campus. They seem to be just Sunnydale vampires. And Sunnydale is not supposed to be that big. She didn't just fight vampires on the highschool grounds when she was in high school. She patrolled Sunnydale. While we never saw the campus, I have trouble imagining a "Buffy will patrol Sunnydale tonight, but stay off the the campus". I have trouble seeing any Sunnydale vampires feeling "At least there isn't a slayer on campus to get a "till you got HERE" attitude. "Sure the slayer is in Sunnydale, but we're safe so long as we stay on campus". And the vampires saying "why don't you go back where you came from" Suggesting she should go back to high school??? Sure that can be what they were going with, but it's still forced just to fit the Thanksgiving theme and doesn't Really make sense for any vampire to say to Buffy in Sunnydale.
I make it a point to watch this episode every Thanksgiving.

Spike's reaction to the bear makes me wonder what the relative strength of a bear vs slayer and vampire is.
Like does Buffy have the strength of two and half bears.

Xander probably didn't know not to tell Buffy about Angel since he didn't see him until just before the epic ride to the rescue of the cavalry - on bikes.
In the ever expanding town of Sunnydale, the vampire at the beginning was probably referring to the UC Sunnydale campus. In ep. 1x1 Cordy describes Sunnydale as not having much town. Then we learn of another high school, perhaps two, then a college (Reptile Boy), and now a second college. Add to that 43 churches, 12 graveyards, a museum, a zoo, a port, a bus depot, an army base, a giant underground government facility, and probably even more.
Rapid industrial expansion? 😁😉 Though the initiative at least is underground, and I always assumed the Reptile Boy college was the same college.

I also love this episode, mainly because about 80% of what Spike says is comedy gold.
"Pangs" as in "Hunger Pangs" it's real a phrase for the pain one feels when they have been forced to go without food for a prolonged period of time.
You completely missed the vamp Thanksgiving with Spoke as the poor, cold, hungry waif wrapped in rags looking in from the window. That was funny.

I saw a review from (someone claiming to be) a Native American, and they said the most offensive thing was the implication that the Chumash people are all gone (they are still around today), and that all the injustices are in the past.
I'm looking forward to the next few episodes on Angel so much!
There's monsters like Stephen Kings it that feeds off fear. Or Dandelo feeds in emotions and humor. I feed off how cute you are and sit around thinking about Buffy/angel

The vamp said "things were great before you came", said that cause the university is on the edge of Sunnydale like 5 miles out or something I believe. Buffy isn't ever acknowledged to have petroled out at the university before she went there as a student.

The reason Joyce isn't there is because this season is about Buffy growing into adulthood, and one aspect of being an adult is making and preparing meals for yourself, rather than having your parents make them for you. Speaking of parents, this is the official pronouncement of Giles as Buffy's father (spiritually speaking).
A good slayer can sense when a vampire is near. That's why she can always senses Angel.

This show doesn't exactly have a great track record when it comes to ethnic representation and this episode is no exception even if they did try to bring up the issue of the genocide committed against the Chumash tribe and other indigenous peoples in a thoughtful way. In spite of all that it did manage to be very funny and well written in parts.

This is one of my comfort episodes. It just puts me in a good mood. Is it top tier? Not really yet it's just so amusing.
The next Angel episode makes me cry and it is a crossover as well. It is one of the best episodes angel had and its five-year run and the and the next and the next few Angel episodes will make you cry as well. I really appreciate all the things you do Miss Alley. I remember watching this when it originally aired with my mum and sister. We were in tears laughing and at the time, I also said I wanted a shot of Angel on a bike lo. To this day it's one of my mum's favourite episode and if I tell her I'm watching a rector react to this episode she smiles

According to Jane Espenson (Pangs writer) that was one of the most extensive rewrites made by Joss. All of 3rd and 4th acts are him basically. About the bear: complete real. A tiny/little one actually and very cute according to Marti Noxon.
I'd be interested to see what the original script was. Because I felt the last half was much weaker (aside from Spike's comedy).

@@jaycievictory8461 Well, it gets into all these complicated and serious issues about genocide of indigenous people, and then it ends with "Well, Spike's kind of got a point when he says we shouldn't feel bad about killing them all". That really bothers me. Also I feel like they kind of turned Buffy and Willow into caricatures as the episode went on (Willow of a college leftist, Buffy just coming off clueless and indecisive). It felt like they were trying to wave away a serious issue, and did the characters a disservice to facilitate that. You can almost not notice it because Spike is so wonderful through this episode (James Marsters steals a scene like nobody else), but nearly everything that bothers me about this episode is in the back half. And it sadly doesn't surprise me that that's the half Whedon heavily rewrote, because he does not handle issues around race and racism well throughout his career in general.
@@antonbrakhage490 He didn't 'heavily' rewrite this script. I attended a Buffy con years back where Jane did a kinda 'live' screening of this episodes and broke down how the script was done. Joss wrote the section about 'indigenous people' as well as a couple of other bits, and did what he usually does with all the episodes and that is tighten up and selectively red pen out certain parts. FYI Jane had to write and research this in just under 10 days, and that included driving out to locations to do more research.
@@Silver-rx1mh all in under 10 days, all the more reason she should have had a native consultant to better represent indigenous issues, rather than just herself.
I love Spike being sat at the dinner table with the rest of them...but still tied up.
