      The problem is that Buffy had long elevated itself from "dumb laugh", so it rankles simply because it is Buffy at this point in its' run. Not what one looks for in this show anymore. But, if nothing else, we got Parker getting hit in the head with a tree, so...

    • @barbarabaker1457
      @barbarabaker1457 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I like that it was also a smart dumb laugh. Exploring the psychology of parts of the brain. Using the most basic part of the brain to resolve the issue of an unhealthy obsession, I get tied into several things in the show including the representation of slayers being ego, superego and id. Willows playing parker was quite brilliant.I even liked some of the Xander storyline the idea of the pseudo intellectual trying to knock down the little guy. As well as his conscience and growth in not having stooped to their level. He would 100% have done what that bartender did in early season 3.

    I like how this episode at first appears to set up Buffy's desire for Parker as being this really primal thing (having to do with basic emotional desires that don't respect the facts). But even though her desire for love is straightforward, her feelings towards Parker are anything but. She's still entangled in the overly-complicated web of his fancy words, and her own self-identification with them.
    Then it shows that on an even simpler level: "Parker Bad," and that somehow feels like an absolute victory of reason.
    Sometimes we make things too complicated on ourselves!

    • @RitsychServare
      @RitsychServare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It seems that over the years, everything that Buffy had been through has clearly affected her self-worth and so it's a correlation to how much that need for self-validation comes out in potential relationships. Angel decided to break up with her in the end of last season and this has affected much of her self-worth that she wonders if she's even desirable among men. So even when Parker had rejected her, she was still hanging on to the idea that she'll get him back, just like she did with Angel, when he rejected her after sleeping with him. It seems like she's trying to overlook all the flaws that are present, but really she's just so blinded by that hope and that need to have that 'love' reciprocated by the men who WERE interested in her. She needed to look at things at an objective standpoint just like Willow and that he's in fact a non-commital "poophead" who goes around fooling young women for sex. 😑

    • @raspar6
      @raspar6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@RitsychServare Yeah, part of me thinks that the whole Parker arc doesn't make sense, because how could she not see what a jerk he is? And how much of a zero he is compared to Angel? But she really believed his words I guess, and more to the point, the show-writers are trying to make a relatable "story-arc," and show how easy it is to be fooled.
      You mentioned Angel, but a lot of the men in her life have abandoned her, including her father. Even Giles betrayed her in one episode, though that was brief. Maybe it is because, in Buffy's universe, she can rely on no one. At the end of the day, the buck always stops with Buffy.
      Anyway this is why (SPOILERS)...
      ...Into the Woods is such an aggravating episode! For Xander to turn around and blame what's-his-face leaving on Buffy??? After so many men have abandoned her, and she always gives so much to the world, and gets so little back in return???
      Some guys just aren't worth your time Buffy.

    "They had it coming." He wasn't wrong.
    I'm still kind of proud of the long words I learned at university. The ones that are specifically appropriate and necessary terms, rather than just in-group jargon and being florid to sound clever. It takes time afterwards to break it down into clearer communication, but you do have to go through that academic language to get on top of a subject. Also I've always enjoyed arguing about definitions, because wrong definitions and terms are usually where wrong thinking and confusion come from. Learning particular concepts like alienation, commodification and dehumanisation has made so many things clear for me.

  • @nadine6153

    Buffy being hung up on Parker has a lot to do with her recent break up with Angel. She really wants the new guy to be the right one that´s why she tries so hard with Parker, that´s why she was scared when he wasn´t lying next to her the next morning. She´s not particularly into him, she just wants this thing to work. Buffy let him treat her badly.

    Context helps--it was a thing in the year or two before this aired, there was a whole slate of 90s tv shows that dealt with drinking with one-off storylines like "On this very special episode of blah blah blah, you'll learn about the trauma of ALCOHOL and the ways it will destroy your life" and so Buffy, as per usual, flipped the script and viewed it through the hellmouth with less of a PSA feel. A lot of people hate it, but having my parents sit through a bunch of those episodes with me to teach me to never ever drink (which didn't work), I loved the irreverent tone of this one.

      Totally. Personally, I'd far rather watch this several times over than the episode later this season Where the Wild Things Are. It's not a deep, classy episode, but it's enjoyable. There are fun moments. That other episode just makes me feel vaguely ill throughout.

    18:17 Added note, you are a beautiful person. Just a general announcement.
    A) Single night of passion. There bad Parker, lie deflated.
    B) Love the layers beneath the WTF stuff.
    Exploring the psychology of parts of the brain. Using the most basic part of the brain to resolve the issue of an unhealthy obsession, and the irony of that while tying into the slayer metaphor.
    C) Willows playing parker was quite brilliant. Physical+mental revenge on Parker.
    C) I even liked some of the Xander storyline the idea of the pseudo intellectual trying to knock down the little guy. As well as his conscience and growth in not having stooped to their level. He would 100% have done what that bartender did in early season 3. Basically the bad man is what he would be if he hadn't matured past the valentine's episode, showing the difference between the child behavior and the adult behavior and how different it looks when it's an adult.

    So the story of this episode (as far as I can remember, which may be off on the details) is that the Bush Administration had an initiative to encourage teenage sobriety and were sponsoring episodes of TV shows that fit their stance on the issue. The execs wanted to go for the money and so they made this episode, but they ultimately were denied the money because the gov't was like 'wtf is this? it's not real beer.'
    A lot of people hate this episode. I think it's hilarious.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love that the execs ordered them to make a "Beer Bad" PSA, and so they made a hilarious anti-PSA in which the great moral of the story is "Beer Foamy." It's so weird to me that people then claim to dislike this episode because it's a moralizing PSA. It's like, did you actually watch the episode? Or did you just read the title and decide to skip the whole 'watching it' part?

      This is true. They government offered money for shows to have anti drinking episodes. The really funny thing is that this episode was made especially to qualify for the credit but they ended up not getting any of the money for it because the government argued it doesn’t depict a realistic scenario that teens would relate to.

    I agree that academic papers are shit. I wrote 2 back to back papers at University for my Business course. One paper was all me, my thoughts and understanding of the subject; the other I barely followed myself, but I put in a bunch of references to books on the reading list. The 2nd one got a better grade. That's when it occurred to me that academic papers are shit. I'm not convinced my tutor actually read either paper.

  • @normalgamergal
    @normalgamergal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So, you might already know this, but this episode was supposed to help get the show funding since the government was giving money to shows that had a message about the dangers of drugs/alcohol. Unfortunately, they didn't think the message was clear enough because titling the episode Beer Bad and having Giles mention that all beer is bad was not direct enough 🤦‍♀️ So yeah, despite writing this episode solely for funding... they didn't get it.

  • @spaceshiplewis
    @spaceshiplewis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    These episodes are definitely "after school specials". You kind of know what they are doing and can see the hollywood executive's fingers in the writing. I think all 90's shows had this edutainment aspect to prove to the government that tv isn't all mind numbing junk food for the brain.
