I always loved how Rythe takes a moment to throw shade at the thief's painting skills. "It looked like a troll, but it was badly done." Lmao. One of my favourite quests in the game for sure.

My question is, if the brush is an aedric artifact that does the painting for you based on what you imagine, how were the thief's painted trolls any more or less badly done than Rythe's paintings? Had he never seen a troll before? Does Rythe have a photographic memory? Does the brush only work properly for those who have been given it willingly by the previous owner (i.e. Rythe's father passing it down to him)? Either way it's a hell of an insult. Rythe basically called the wood elf "too stupid to visualize a troll" meanwhile there are literal picture books (at least in Skyrim) showing what a troll looks like. Also, wood elves are supposed to be masters of wildlife, yet he was STILL too stupid to imagine a troll. Wow. I guess the Cyrodiilic thieves guild really do hire anyone these days.

    • @karnewarrior
      @karnewarrior 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@lsswappedcessna Perhaps the brush still works based on the skill of the painter, it simply doesn't need to be put to page to make the magic happen, and allows the painter to enter the unfinished painting to do fine details on a more macro scale. Both would be very useful to a regular painter, I suspect, and absolutely vital for one who'd lost use of his arms.

Wow, unknowingly coming across the painting quest was one of those gaming memories that has stuck with me forever. Between it, seeing Oblivion's opening for the first time, spending FAR too long grabbing and throwing the chains hanging in the cell (remember "physics" was still a new thing back then), and a lot of other things made Oblivion next level great in my younger eyes.

To be fair, Oblivion's leveling system is a little bit special. I can't blame anyone for just running around and somehow doing the entire main quest by level 3. I'm level 1 in my current save and have already gained the first mercantile perk from doing the scroll glitch (yes it works even with the unofficial oblivion patches) and selling the scrolls, soul gems, and other stuff I duped. Every time I play a Bethesda game I have to cheese it. It's a rule I live by.
Also why in the hell is this nearly 20 year old 32 bit game with 25-ish mods and the 4GB patcher more stable than unmodded Fallout 4? It's not a hardware issue, my computer might be 2 years old now but it has 32GB of physical memory and 12GB of video memory, and has a step down from flagship (in 2022) for the GPU and CPU. This thing running Oblivion is the gaming equivalent of using a gantry crane built to load and unload shipping containers from a cargo ship to pick up a Honda Beat for an oil change, instead of three guys and some cinderblocks.

Yeah, "a brush with death" was a core memory for me for sure. Just being a little kid and going INTO a painting. It was so surreal and kinda scary. Like you are somewhere you aren't supposed to be.
I got that feeling SO much playing Oblivion to be honest lol.
Like when I would uncover torture rooms in the castles I would be so scared. Like, "I shouldn't be here, what have I uncovered".
Or going to Oblivion and feeling uneasy because it was "unnatural", and there was no place safe.
As a kid there are SO many moments in this game where it kinda just takes normal and completely flips it. When I was a kid it hit hard lol. There are so many times where things seem normal for a little bit, then things just go completely crazy. As an adult it all seems pretty obvious now, but when I was a kid all of these things felt shocking and like a huge deal lol.
Like I remember doing the mages guild quests and being disturbed and scared out of my mind when first encountering the necromancers. It felt like some huge deal.
Another core memory for me is probably the elder scroll heist from the thieves guild.
      Good times, good times.

I think what is happening is that the younger generations are stumbling on these games and are generally vibing with it. A younger kid today I think doesn't have many new single player games. Plus the old elder scrolls games are just so jam packed with goodness that people are really starting to respect them. Not saying Skyrim is bad, but Morrowind and Oblivion are just so loveable with their quirkiness. Something about them is mythical, ethereal, and just weird/zany. So I think older people are reminiscing, and younger people are enjoying uncovering these games and elderscrolls lore. When I think about it there aren't really any other games like elder scrolls.
Elden Ring and Dark Souls are the closest games I can think of but they are still different, and amazing games in their own way, but elderscrolls has its own brand of fantasy that no other game replicates.
It saddens me that Elder Scrolls doesn't seem to lean into it's weirdness as much anymore. I am really scared for Elder Scrolls 6 to be honest. For me what has always made Elder Scrolls special is just how unique and weird it is. Morrowind is just so far from the fantasy norm, but it works so beautifully. I hope Bethesda learns to lean into that, I don't think they will and that's a shame.

@@hhjhj393in my case, I tried playing oblivion as a younger kid after being used to Skyrim, and each newer elder scrolls game I’d say gets more and more… user friendly? Mechanics from oblivion were odd and more difficult to pick up than those from Skyrim that I was used to so I definitely struggled. Then I got older and I’ve been absolutely in love with oblivion because my now almost fully developed lobes can handle it lol. I now love a lot of the oblivion mechanics and features more than some of the Skyrim ones.

To add context to the seemingly pitiful stash in Two Sides of the Coin, the rumors that start up the Corruption and Conscience cite a 5 gold fine for littering, with the added note that "I barely make that much in a year!" So if we compare 5 gold to just under a yearly wage for the average citizen (somehow), then 40 gold plus the value of all the other loot is El Dorado by comparison.

I love that a brush with death kind of feels like a joking nod to the fact that most of the paintings in the game are filtered screenshots of real in-game landscapes. The quest just gives that "hyper-realism" an in-universe explanation through Rythe and his magic brush (I guess all the paintings we see are his? except maybe portraits). idk that was just always kinda cool to me, not sure if it was intentional or not haha

The way I saw it while playing Two Sides of the Same Coin was that it feels like Jorundr has less reason to lie about not killing the guards or even downplaying his crimes. You're supposedly a criminal and would he really go to this elaborate lie to get you to kill his ex-partner. The lady just has more reason to lie because she can actually get something out of it + she actually wants you to gain his trust. She knows you're going to talk to him. She needs to lie, he doesn't.
That being said, I definitely could see him being violent with her beforehand. It doesn't really sound like he had much affection for her if he jumps to killing so fast imo. And the rest of his dialogue feels kind of suspicious. And it is true that manipulators do lie to make the other side seem "crazy" or like a liar. I've seen it happen a lot.
Also, I just don't really like those quests were you can't find out the "right" answer without completing it. The worst version of it is Skyrim's Alikr quest. It's less of a moral dilemma and more just "go with your gut". It's a bit lame. To me, a moral dilemma should be more two right answers not just "not enough information". This one is better, since it frames it as less of a moral dilemma and more an experience where it doesn't matter.
Edit: The whole "living in his house while he's in jail" angle I don't really get taking issue with. They were partners, there's supposedly no next of kin that she's obstructing. If she's telling the truth, I don't see why she shouldn't live in his house. If she's lying, I don't really take much issue with it either. It's a thief stealing from a thief.
There's also some danger in assuming either's account is entirely true. Suppose that the lady did rat him out, but didn't commit the murder. Or she didn't rat him out, but did complete the murder. Both are possible.

Regarding the Painting quest: it's the only part of the game where the turpentine and painted troll fat items can be obtained. Also, as far as I was able to determine back in the day when I played it, the Apron you get as the quest reward is possibly the best piece of light armor in the game, and the only limitation is that it's only a chest piece.

Love this channel, but I feel super nitpicky. Like with the glitches, a part of me understands. Another part wants u to git gud and try again. Or saying you don't know something that COULD be found out. Saying something didn't work out and it didn't prompt you to reload a save. Lots of little things.
Maybe it's because I've been playing Oblivion for years and years and years. I was even being unfair and thinking "How are you just now finding these?" But I don't know how long you've been playing. So, that's just me.
Anyway, I didn't want to say nothing because I want to know that you know that somebody knows that you CAN do better. But again, I really love the stories, the channel, YOUR VOICE. It's a 9/10 and now I've told you what's costing you that 1 point w/ me.

It's honestly shocking to know that, being the Oblivion fan that you are, you never actually did A Brotherhood Betrayed
That's one of the quests I can never actually run away from, not only 'cause Bruma is the closest town to the Cloud Ruler Temple, but because of the Thieves' Guild leading you to the fence in the city
Inevitably, A Brotherhood Betrayed is always shoved onto me by the NPCs, and the plot being about vampires always makes it interesting
It's one of those quests I consider to be essential, for how unique it is and for how easy it is to get it

  • @NegativeDumpster
    @NegativeDumpster 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think Olav wouldn't help you because his disposition was still too low. See, whenever you need to get a reluctant NPC to spill the beans on something, you need to get their Disposition up to a specific number. In Olav's case, it's probably something like 70%, or so. If his Disposition is even a _single point_ under that threshold, then it won't count. A good way to circumvent this issue (without resorting to pickpocketing) would be to get Olav's Disposition as high as you can, and then hit him with a Charm spell; Charms work even if the NPC's Disposition is "maxed".
Disposition _can_ actually go below 0%, or above 100%, but the game won't display it. For instance, if an NPC has, say, 110% Disposition, the game will claim they only have 100%.
As for the rest of these quests, I'm a fan of all of them too, except for "Bear Season."
"A Brush With Death" is pretty mindless, but it at least gives us a truly beautiful environment to explore. It also gives us a unique poison, the Turpentine. Turpentine's one and only purpose is hurting Painted Trolls, so after the quest is over, it's little more than a novelty. And since there's no way to access the "Damage Painted Trolls" effect in the vanilla game, it's a very rare item. I like to use five of the bottles on the first five trolls, and then keep the last bottle. This gives the sixth troll more of a climactic feel, like a "Mini-Boss", of sorts. Also, since the Turpentine bottles aren't quest items, you can even display them in your house. If I remember correctly, it looks the same as a regular poison, but it's still a cool thing to have. The Turpentine, the Painted Troll fat, and of course, the Apron. Also, Rhythe was referenced in Skyrim; Elgrim of Riften mentions sending letters to Rhythe asking for Painted Troll fat.
"A Brotherhood Betrayed" is honestly a pretty cool quest. It's one of the first times we see someone take advantage of people's fear of vampires to quite literally get away with murder. The villain still makes stupid mistakes, like leaving critical evidence in his hotel room (Well Okay, _Inn_ room), and not running away with the loot the first chance he got. But the fact that he actually acknowledges that he did so, and chastises himself for being so careless, is a neat touch; he basically lampshades his own "Bond villain" -esque stupidity.
I really like "Lifting the Vale". For starters, it touches on the Akaviri people themselves, which is something we almost never see in-game. This fact alone would make the quest fairly unique, but we also see the (actually quite tragic) story of a doomed Akaviri messenger, and towards the end of the quest, we help him and his commander make peace with how they "failed" their comrades, and peacefully move on to the afterlife.
"A Raid on Greyland" is about as barebones and mindless as it gets, but it's over in a few minutes, so if nothing else, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just a quick distraction that nets you some extra cash.
"Bear Season" is just flat-out mediocre. Nothing more, nothing less.

You know, Two Sides of the Same Coin makes me upset hearing it laid out like this because if you think about for more than 2 seconds, Arnora doesn't have a motive. Arnora tells you very specifically "Get the location of the stash out of Jorundr," but then according to him "*We* buried the gold in the woods." In other words, according to Jorundr (who the game very much presents as not caring enough anymore to lie to you because it wouldn't get him out) Arnora *knows where the stash is!* So then why'd she spread the rumors? Why didn't she just go get it? Why'd she ask you to do *anything at all?!*
You can tell the quest designer just wrote down "insert twist here" without spending a single extra thought. This is peak Bethesda writing.

Judjing by the title of the video, you didn't even visit Bruma in your previous playthroughs - which I don't think is possible, as there is at least 1 plot Oblivion gate and 1 plot battle near Bruma, and I doubt you didn't have to unload your gear after Oblivion gates...well if only you didn't always fast travel to either Anvil or Imperial City for it, as I usually do)
Still, your first fence is in Bruma, one Mages Guild recommendation quest, one Dark Brotherhood quest...and are the quests in this video are the only quests in Bruma, and there's nothing hidden or secret about them - they are pretty obvious, and you even might overhear some NPCs mentioning them to each other, or to you by using "rumors" dialog option)

40:35 There is one of Oblivion's flaws: The writing in quests and dialogues that does not make sense.
Raynil walking up to you, talking to you as if he had it all figured out, he's the all-seeing eye, watching Bruma, even in daylight and he also already knew, that you were going to be his demise from the very first moment you stepped foot into Bruma.
He knows immediately everything about you, jesus i wonder if he also knows what else i played, if i did some questionable things in another whole-ass game like Rimworld and also who the frikkin Nerevarine is and he also knows about the tragic of Darth Plagueis the wise.
"Yes, you [unknown random ass person, who entered the local pub before i wanted to enter it] were already there and, naw shiet, you were quicker than me and as i saw you enter the [local random pub], i knew i had to flee town immediately."
Yes Raynil and i am the instrument of all your sins. I have listened through rock, metal and flesh and now you will listen...
Raynil, there's been word of another settlement that needs your help, here i'll mark it on your map, oh wait what am i doing, *YOU ALREADY KNOW WHICH SETTLEMENT I MEAN, BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL-KNOWING, RIGHT??*
Don't get me wrong, i love Oblivion. I loved Morrowind before it, and i am absolutely addicted to Skyrim, too. I am a frikkin Bethesda fan, but shit writing like this is probably one of the first signs of Bethesda downgrading the quality of their games.
I am playing through Morrowind (with OpenMW) right now and apart from all the cheese and the ridiculously overpowered items, that game had much better story writing.
I mean, what the hell happened to the good story writers? Did most of them leave after Morrowind and the rest after Oblivion and even more after Skyrim? Jesus the decline is so openly visible, what the hell is going on with those guys?
