I love how men write female characters whose main thoughts seem to be constant enamour by and turned on by their own bodies when most women actually spent a lot of time plagued by body insecurity.

I'm a writer as well and sometimes I'll go through researching subjects for days or even weeks or months to get it right! Reading these excerpts were excruciatingly painful.
I don't know about research, I'm pretty sure some of these people have never even SEEN a woman before 😆

I'm an aspiring male writer myself and desperately hope none of my work comes across like this, although I've never compared breasts to fruit or written a female character as either revolving entirely around "traditional femininity" or as a shocking subversion of tropes for not doing so, so I think watching TH-camrs like these two (and also being bi) has at least given me SOME extra perspective that most straight men lack.

I think some male authors don’t realize that women don’t objectify themselves the way men objectify them.

It's because so many of them assume that if we wear a short dress or skinny jeans or something, it must be to attract men and be sexy, instead of any of the other reasons one might wear such an outfit, such as weather or because it's just comfy. Like, I'm an asexual woman but I wear tank tops and short shorts all the time because I just think they're nice to wear and they help me stay cool. The one about Juliet was actually from a children's book called Artemis Fowl. I don't remember which one that particular paragraph was from. Anyway, Juliet came from a long line of bodyguards. And most of them had been male so she was one of few that had been able to be successful. And she showed that you could be feminine and pretty and wear makeup and stuff while still being badass and killing people. And her older brother was a very successful bodyguard. When I was little she was a big role model.
As soon as I read this comment that part of the video came up-

@@leandrog2785 I get how my comment could be misinterpreted, but it makes more sense in the context of the story. I never said that killing people is badass, and actually she rarely kills people. The thing is she is feminine and still fight people and be strong. Sorry for the confusion.
How to write a female character:
1. Create an interesting personality as you would any character.
2. Show they're female by giving them she/her pronouns. (Or for first person, you could very briefly describe how fricking uncomfortable/annoying/itchy their bra is and how it's mysteriously decided to break/move out of place/slip a strap down your arm because most women can relate. But don't focus on the boobs, of course.)
3. Don't describe their body in sexual detail (especially boobs/hips/legs/bum) unless it's relevant to the scene (which means only ever sex scenes) and only after we can see the female character is there for more than sex appeal.
(Edit: Obviously, if they broke their leg for example, you could describe how their leg looked mangled. I just mean avoid describing their legs in a weirdly specific, sexual and unnecessary way e.g. 'the hairs were beautifully smooth.' Just no.)

Depending on the audience and category the book is in,
A lot would not even need or should have the bra thing like, they dont even have to describe those kinds of things to show they are female. It literally doesnt have to include unecissary things to prove theyre a woman or have woman issues etc such as bra straps, its not needed and can actually take you out of the story (depending on the genre of course, maybe not romcoms or romance, it would be rather okay for that, but things that have action, fantasy sci fi etc, it can sometimes take you out of it. Sort of like "why did they include this?"

Unfortunately, there are already plenty of books that do this lol. Some of the things I've read from female authors describing men are both hilarious and horrifying lol. A lot of describing their genitals as "rods," "thick and meaty" and more. And that was in a supernatural fantasy book and not a romance or erotica. I cringe to think what it would be if I read a more erotic novel, lol.
Cheating in a ship would make total sense in a Aubrey/Maturin-novel. 😁

"Broken heart syndrome" does indeed exist, a strong emotion like shock over the death of a loved one or joy over winning the lottery can trigger a heart attack even in young and healthy people. Padme's death still was handled pretty bad writing wise.
@@jolly_39 I'm here to second that. It's called takotsubo cardiomyopathy, and it looks just like a heart attack but doesn't involve any blood vessel blockages. The shape of the heart changes and the left ventricle can't pump properly.

5:47: Men underestimating what women can do: OH MAN LET ME TELL YOU!! XD Okay, so this was a story I think on an Ask Reddit, from someone working in something like a Best Buy or what, a big box store that sold appliances, and this old guy comes over, and he and his wife are looking for a new fridge. And so the worker there finds out what he's looking for, price range, etc etc, and starts showing him models, but all of them are wrong. None of them cook his food!
So the worker's like, "Oh! You mean like a microwave! Sorry, they're just over here--"
But the old guy insists that no, he wants the big insulated box that keeps your food cold; but he wants another of the ones that cooks the food you put in it, too. You know, like his one at home does.
And the worker of course is all like, "That's... not a thing?" and the old guy is getting angrier and angrier at this young idiot who doesn't even know anything about how fridges work, so the poor worker asks him to *very specifically* say *exactly* what his fridge does to cook the food he's putting into it (probably suspecting now that something is shorting out *really badly* in there lol).
And the old guy tells him about how his wife will put a raw chicken in there on a plate to defrost, and then the next day, it's all cooked and roasted up and everything! He wants a fridge that does that, dammit!!
And as he's saying this, his wife wanders up to see why picking a fridge is taking so long. And she's just, like, "...Did-- did you *honestly* think it was our *fridge* that took the chicken out, stuffed it, seasoned it, *roasted* it, and put it back in there?! *It was me!!"*
(I fully expect "you idiot!!" was added onto the end, ha ha)
Like, HOLY SHIT, this guy actually thought his *fridge,* not his *WIFE,* was the one cooking his food!!
Talk about underestimating women, holy fuck. XD
I don't see how that counts as "underestimating women". I mean, surely, he must have seen her cook before, so he knows she can cook. The issue seems more along the lines of him not seeing her cook _sometimes,_ and then food being uncooked in the fridge at first and then later in the same spot, cooked this time, without seeing the process of it getting cooked.
It's more an issue of missing object permanence (well, not exactly, but I don't know the term for the exact thing that's missing and the concept is damn near the same) than underestimating his wife. (Unless there's context missing in your retelling of the story and the guy genuinely didn't think his wife could cook anything at all.)
Besides, no matter how much you underestimate someone, concluding that a fridge is cooking food is not something any even remotely rational person would ever do. A more logical conclusion would be that the wife hired a chef to cook the food instead of cooking it herself, now _that_ would mean he underestimates her. But thinking the fridge is doing it? Clearly his brain is just a bunch of useless mush.
As a man and a writer, this is to other men who don't know how to write women:
About writing women, uh... you could just... you know, write them as regular people with flaws and complex personalities and different things that make them different people. You know, good character writing-
Also you'd think that more men who write women would actually just ASK WOMEN to proofread their writing-

Sure was peculiar recognizing this line from my childhood and realizing now how bizarrely written it is. It did get the point across when I read it as a kid, though.
I actually did not mind the make up part. For me it just sounded like that was something she likes to do but needs to have a military efficiency while doing it. so she's a badass but a badass who happens to like to wear make up since she was still a person with her own interests while being trained to be an assassin butler. It's also stated in the book that she had to move around a lot during her bodyguard training, which is why the emphasis was put on her "blending in" and being able to do things very quickly. Though the wording "stunning Asian-European gene mix" and the makeup was a bit loopy, I think that passage was really taken out of context.

I just wanna say I absolutely love the discussion about the cutting ability of a nipple and I think one of my genuine life goals is for myself and my partner to sit and have a cuppa one day with you two. Feel like it would be the best day ever.
BUUUUUUT... A nipple could not cut anything, regardless or density. Cutting paper is used to test sharpness not hardness. A diamond ball would be very hard but about as likely to be able to cut paper as a nipple.
i would love to see an object that is both floppy and sharp to be fair

@@saucybeansauce2775 don't get me wrong, being hard does mean a blade holds the edge for longer, so stays sharper longer, but you could theoretically make any soft surface sharp, wood for example is very soft but can be sharpened, but will go blunt long before steel for example.
My point is it is theoretically possible to make jelly sharp enough to cut, but it would be more wobbly than floppy as it would at least need to be harder than paper or the paper would cut or crumple it first. ☺️

The second one, Juliet, if from Artemus Fowl, and she’s a great character. There is context to the problems with the discription; she’s part of a family trained from almost birth to be elite bodyguards/assassins. I think this section is were the book I’d explaining the Butler family (her family). We’ve already met her big brother, who is the bodyguard of the protagonist and a main character.
As a huge Artemis Fowl fan, the line itself is still very badly written & 100% deserves the call-out. We don't need context to know the "four minutes to do makeup" line is just heavily relying on misogynist tropes.
The whole 'she could blend into any crowd despite being half Asian' thing does still strike me as weird lol
I'd completely forgotten that line was in the books, admittedly, bit of a double take there. It does help the snippet a lot that the context in which it was written wasn't a prelude for the author to go to horny jail. Weird and maybe in need of a rewrite? Yes. Set up for a story where an older brother is way too attracted to their super cool younger sister? No.

Ah this makes sense now! I read Artemis Fowl when I was younger and my impression was that these sort of descriptions are for humoristic effect. The description of Juliet is unrealistic but presented as perfectly reasonable and on the level of getting good grades and getting a part time job which would make a parental big brother proud, and that normality contrast is what makes it funny.
PLEASE PLEASE do more of these! The combination of the two of you AND /MenWritingWomen is absolutely golden!

Seriously though, so long as you don't do stereotypical sexist things, like describing boobs/lips/thighs/butts/etc. sexually, relying on the male gaze to convey her worth, or talking about how she should smile more, I think you'll be fine.
I would generally avoid sex scenes altogether, I don't exactly know why they're a literary staple when they rarely add anything of merit and are rarely done well, but hey, that's tough if you wanna do erotica or something. Ultimately it's your choice, just be sure to research for at least 6 hours on any major detail that isn't your speciality/ not known super well.
Good luck, I love writing too and will hopefully write for an animated show one day, if all goes well :)
ask any friend that has experiences as a woman to help you out proofreading if you're still unsure :)

@@Ramberta Okay, but how is it bad? lol Without context it sounds wrong, but with context it simply means Juliet is very good at being a bodyguard/assasin and still likes to be feminine and do girly things, that that those aren't contradictory. And her brother isn't proud bc it's "sexy" that she can do "stereotypical man stuff and look hot at the sime time" but simply that his little sister completed her training and is very good at their shared profession.
In a story where all character are over the top. Juliet is extremely good and what she does. She was trained to master skills, but as a consequence lacks skills in other areas, just as everybody who has focused a life's training on a very specific aspect. Musicians, athletes, scientists...
The second passage is from Artemis Fowl and makes sense within the context of the story. She's a professional bodyguard like her brother.

They talked about Artemis in terms of how utterly intelligent he was. He was a master manipulator, playing 4d chess with the mystical world, but also very human in how he just missed his father. This passage focuses on Juliet's looks in an odd way (if he was trying to say that she could fit in anywhere, he didn't need to bring up her genetics) and how she can do her make up in four minutes (which is a weird thing to train a young teenager to do? And for what occasion? This 14 year old girl putting on a full face of make up to fix a helicopter?) alongside facts that still don't tell us anything about her. She could be a robot he built and it wouldn't change the paragraph any. Maybe they do a better job with a whole book to get into her 🤷
They added the genetics because she was in Singapore (and i'm sure was insinuating as well how she can blend well anywhere like was mentioned)and hiding while tracking down Butler's mentor (or another Asia place if I am wrong) and maybe they added the makeup to impress the reader in a strange way who knows.
