At my wedding, the minister, not knowing it was my mom he was talking to, said he didn't know why he was marrying us because our marriage wouldn't last a year. My mom said she came so close to decking him. Same asshole forgot we had music planned and as I was finishing getting ready, I heard the wedding march begin. Mad scramble to get everyone into position and down the aisle. And, then, the asshole got lost in the middle of the vows and started all over from the beginning. Oh, yes, and the mics weren't on, so no one in the audience could hear us. We got the last laugh, though. We celebrated our 35th anniversary this year.

The marriage license thing actually isn’t a big deal, you can sign it anytime. Most of the time the people getting married will go with the person marrying them after the ceremony and sign it real quick. The ceremony is for you and for guests, the paper is for the government.

The marriage schedule IS a big deal in Scotland in that it’s dated and so it has to be done on the day and with witness etc. You can’t “do it any time” I’ve know weddings delayed hours because the paperwork wasn’t with the celebrant. Pretty sure that’s the same in England. Different if you plan to do it separately of course.

I didn't even know people tend to do that at the actual wedding, everyone who I know has all of the paperwork done beforehand and then has the ceremony like months later or something. Or vice versa, I've known people who have had the ceremony first but won't be legally married for a while afterwards due to weird scheduling issues or whatever. I've always thought of them as two separate events, one legal and the other as more of a celebration.

Celestial Sitcom but like okay. You’re in front of a crowd of people. Holding expensive dessert. In fancy clothes. Probably about to have a bunch of pictures taken. And the person you love most in the world attacks you with said expensive dessert. A pie in the face on a random day is one thing. But with all the other pressure of a wedding day, needing to hose off and change is not something that most couples need. Like it’s cool if you want to, but it’s something that should be discussed because for most people it really isn’t funny and is just humiliating if you were expecting a normal bite of cake

At my wedding almost 25 years ago the chuppah (the canopy in a Jewish wedding ceremony) was a head shorter than the rabbi, who is 6'8". Each corner ended up being held by someone resting the pole on two pop cans taped together and taped to the floor. It worked, but only just. Lesson learned: Always measure the rabbi before cutting the chuppah poles.

My wedding fails for other people's entertainment:
    - put the cupcakes in the window where they looked beautiful, about a third of them melted in the sunshine
    - the priest rejected my entry music because it was "too satanic/about drugs" (it was neither)
    - husband is totally useless at remembering which hand/finger the ring goes on, so he just put both his hands out to me, I put the ring on the wrong hand
    - stepped on the back of my dress ripping it a bit during my first dance (not bad and made by a friend who was there so she could pin it back up)
    - venue was my old school, and there were international students staying in the dorms upstairs, so half way through the afternoon, 50 students around age 13 from Hong Kong crashed it (they were curious to see what was going on, they left pretty quick)
    - i told my husband that he had to say I was pretty because the father of the bride normally does and I didn't think my dad would (he didn't). He subsequently forgot the entire rest of his speech and just said I looked pretty
    - my aunt was walking to her car with my brother for a lift home and broke her ankle tripping over a grave
    - buffet and disabled access were a bit dissapointing and not what was promised
100% I don't look back the day with anything other than fondness. We celebrated 7 years this year and I promise anyone who is nervous about fails, they very quickly get forgotten down the line

one of my friends the wedding cake, a traditional chinese one (which are soft and squishy) was knocked off the table by a rambunctious child. We watched as it fell and went SPLAT. What followed was the groomsmen running interferance to distract bride and groom from finding out while people ran off to find a still open shop who could rush make them another chinese cake. DAaaamn. To their credit, they laughed about it. But I was like oh no, that poor parent must feel SO BAD about their kid. (I mean it wasn't really the kid's fault, the table was wobbly already). At my own wedding things were going fine till we got to the hotel and found nobody at reception to let us IN. Unable to get into the building we were forced to get back into our taxi and find a B&B with a room free. I then spent the entire night throwing up and fearing I gave everyone food poisoning. I didn't, it turned out it was a bad reaction between my medication and the one glass of wine I had. but yeah, WHOLE night hunched over the bowl.
    Not fun.
And not a great start to married life lol.
Worst one though, was my cousin's wedding when I was a child.
First off, my mother was making the dress and one of our cats pissed on it like days before the wedding. Washing satin is really difficult because it marks, so my dad came up with the genius idea to use a spritzer bottle to fade out the water stain once it was washed so you couldn't see it.
then at the ceremony her train got caught on some bushes and had to be rescued.
then the after party... ooooh dear. Now, I was a child and myself, the page boy and the other flowergirl were playing tag outside. As we ran past the building, from the balcony above the bride's sister's boyfriend (Who was scum) hurled a beer bottle, narrowly missing the other flowergirl. This then started an argument when the bride's father asked him to leave and he refused and the sister defended him. Then a fight broke out.
I walked in at the sound of screaming to find my own mother literally on TOP of my cousin (sister of the bride) smacking her head into the carpet because apparently she spat in my mother's face and red fog decended.
My father meanwhile is laughing his ass off and lamenting that his video camera has run out of battery while the bride is tearing her hair out because her aunt is beating the crap out of her sister while their dad and all her uncles CHEER THE AUNT ON.
    Oh man...
    My poor cousin.
That I think was the most epic wedding i've ever been to in terms of chaos. I don't think anything can beat a family fist fight.

Apparently something very similar happened at my aunt's wedding (this was long before I was born so I've only heard the story from dad, who was a teenager at the time). One of the guests made an insulting comment about another guest's wife, and got punched, and a fist fight ensued among all the men in the family... the poor bride was crying in the corner because the reception venue was getting wrecked and it was absolute chaos. I think a lot of men ended up sleeping on the couch that night...

My mom wedding: I was a closeted ftm wearing a dress and having everyone nto seing us often thinking my nephew (2years younger than me, was raised like brothers) was my boyfriend, my BIL arrived late because he was hangover (and also the witness), apparently there was a dead duck somewhere, my mom didn,t dance with my stepfather, he was drunk when they got on the boat, the DJ ate a lot of food, leaving almost not enough for the guests and he didn't used the music list my mother gave him, my mother did... everything. My other BIL sweared and insulted me when he was drunk and I prevented him from falling the stairs.

I was 20 and my hubby was 22 when we got married. I wish we had waited just a little bit, but we both grew up Mormon and it was frowned upon to have long engagements. We ended up having our reception in the cultural hall (basically a basketball court) of the church because it was free to use. We couldn't afford a photographer so all of the pictures I have are taken on early 2000s era digital cameras and they are terrible. 16 years later we are still happily married, so in the end it didn't matter, but I would have loved to at least have some good photos...of our basketball court wedding 😂

At my oldest sister's wedding she had it in an outdoor music festival because she's a hippy (I love her but we live in scotland, any outdoor event is a gamble) and I wasn't out yet so I wore a dress... Only to get there and see that barely anyone had dressed up since it was a casual wedding. I could have worn anything. The people dressed in suits and nice dresses were uncomfortable in the mud and cold.
All the food carts were weird food and expensive, not even a discount for the wedding guests. There was nowhere to sit down except the floor and a weirdly shaped tree which was constantly occupied by bored people. I ended up making friends with a bunch of zoned out people in a tent who weren't in the wedding party and they offered me tea so that's how I spent most of the night, they were nice at least. I had to babysit my other sister and her friend who got so incredibly drunk that I had to drag them back home through a bus and a train over two cities while they barely stayed upright and my sister wouldn't stop asking me if I was alright (she just kept saying that over and over.) Sisters friend got sober enough to call her boyfriend and turns out she had promised not to drink because they were three months sober /and/ she had kissed another guy so that arguement happened! Alsoooo got yelled at by a drunk person on the train and my sister was asleep and couldn't help me so that was f u n.
My oldest sister absolutely loved it though and said it was the most magical day of her life so 🙃

Our wedding had been planned for a year. The month before the wedding, someone else in the family got pregnant and she decided she had to get married before the baby was born. They lived in Southern California, our wedding was in Northern California. Our wedding was a dinner affair, and they booked theirs in for breakfast the following morning. Most of the family lived in Southern California, so we went from a guest list of about 140 to just 30 people (including the bridal party) literally 2-3 weeks before the wedding.
It was amazing! Totally chill and relaxed and everyone who was there had gone out of their way to attend and make sure we knew we were loved. We had MOUNTAINS of food (and 7 cheesecakes to go around). The budget for the drinks meant we got some fancier stuff instead of drinks for 140. Our photographers had extra time since they didn't have as many guests to work with. It was perfect. :)
Also, we had drama with the bridesmaid dresses. I wanted sage green fabric, everyone make their own dresses with it. Nothing went right. The fabric store told 4 us meters of fabric should be enough for a floor-length bridesmaid dress + hijab for a 5'6" woman (she needed more like 11meters). They gave us the chiffon on the day I purchased it and shipped the satin as it was in their warehouse, and surprise, the colors weren't the same (we had a sage green chiffon and were sent aqua satin). My maid of honour had to go without the fabric as they had run out and couldn't source more. Her dress was made in Pakistan whilst they were visiting there, and the first one came back with silver trim instead of gold and cut at the knees. The fabric for my male bridesmaid's shirt got lost in shipping (and again, couldn't get more), so we had to buy one from a local shop. Somehow the gods smiled on us and everyone matched. The colours actually matched and everyone looked gorgeous. I still have no idea how it happened.

We got married in October last year so I wanted to give you both some advice! No matter what goes wrong, just laugh about it. Your reaction will effect all of your family and friends who just want you to be happy. If you get annoyed try to focus on how happy you are instead (I know that's not always easy!) My DJ got drunk, mixed up a lot of our stuff, called us the wrong names in our introduction and then fell asleep on stage. We just sent him home and said we'd do the rest and we did. Spotify is actually much better than a DJ, just ask all of your guests to add their favourite songs to your wedding playlist! I walked my white dress through mud too but because we just laughed, everyone else did too! Hope you both have such a fun day when it finally arrives :)

This is really, really good advice. Not always easy to put into practice, but still really good! From experience it's hard in theorems to retain perspective when something long-planned has a bit go wrong, esp. with an audience, but maintaining your sense of humour frankly makes a big difference in ANY stressful situation. And can bring you closer by making it something you laugh about together, rather than pushing you apart by being something you have a fight about...

I have to share this. Morning of my 3 pm wedding.. I'm packing the car up to head to the venue to set up the wedding I planned entirely by myself from 1300 miles away. Like, for real, no one helped or offered to help. My aunt calls at 7 am and demands to know where I am because her husband was nervous. I roll my eyes and calmly tell her I'll be there soon, he can just leave if he wants. Four minutes later same aunt texts me to ask if she can spend my entire wedding filming from right next to the ceremony so that the abusive mother I haven't spoken to in 8 years and didn't invite on purpose can see it and "share in the moment". She didn't congratulate us at all afterwards and didn't say thank you when she opened the custom gift i had made, I didn't get any gifts from them that day. She also told me one week before we drove down for our wedding that I probably needed to find a different venue because she had "just" found out the contract she signed for the venue had restrictions we unknowingly breaking. I say, elope.

I once worked in a very old-fashioned confectionery and if someone hat ordered a cake like to one in the tiktok they probably would have got a similarly bad result because this place mostly did the _roses, name banner and figurine on top_ kind of wedding cake. Not very aesthetic, but that was the style they offered and did well...
Also if you only find a small number of pictures of cakes that you like on a website then I recommend that you ask if the person who made those specific cakes still works there and is able to decorate your cake. Like I used to do the more unusual modern request but I doubt that the guy took my place after I left would be able to do the same.
Hope that helps anyone in order to avoid disappointment 😅

I went to pick up my wedding dress after the final fitting, 2 days before my wedding when my MoH arrived from out of town, only to find the hem was at least 4 inches longer on one side than the other. The shop sent in a girl to re-pin the hem, and she started turning the 6 inch lace bottom UNDER to make it match. I almost went bridezilla, and my MoH pinned my hem properly. Because of this, I had to pick up my wedding dress the morning of the wedding, when the bride's maids were supposed to be having brunch. We did try my dress on, and it fit. Back to our house for hair and make up. When we were leaving for the church, my friend's car already loaded with our dresses, my almost father-in-law calls to say he has forgotten a dress shirt, and could we wait for him to come get one from our closet. NO Go to WalMart! (I did not handle that well.) At the church, we find out our ring bearer has not had his tux fitted, or even tried on, and it's at least 3 sizes too big for him. All the women standing at the church door ready to go up the aisle, and the photographer's wife (who was acting as our sane person that day), shoves the bride's maids up the aisle a full song too early. So we all arrive at the altar, and the minister isn't even there. He peaks his head out his office door with the most surprised look on his face, grabs his stole and hurries to us. The entire wedding party was hysterically laughing by then. Pastor Bill clips on his microphone and asks if we are in a hurry. More laughter. We thought everything went smoothly after that. While leaving the church, my sister arrives. I snapped at her you missed the wedding just go to the reception (drink was involved on her part). The reception was supposed to be a totally relaxed, informal beer, sandwiches and cake thing with dancing. Our friend who was running the music forgot to mention the food was downstairs, and my father and step mom, who made the food, got ticked. I took off my veil because I got tired of having my head yanked by all the hugs, and then forgot it at the venue. When it was all finished, and we got back to our hotel room we were still wired and hungry. Room service was closed. We ordered pizza and opened our presents. AFTER the wedding we found out that in the pictures, during the family joining vows with our individual daughters, my new step daughter was scowling the evil eye at us. And the cleaners we'd hired for the next morning never showed up (we'd rented a non wedding space), so the entire mess was still there when they opened the next day. Still, it was a great wedding, we had fun, the cake was delicious, only my sister had too much drink but that's expected, and even my step daughter's evil eye photo made us laugh. I'm glad you are waiting till next year. Love and hugs.

I came home today from another training day at a shitty place after I said I'm not going to be able to work there. And I felt like a failure. But thank universe Jamie and Shaaba was here for me to remind me that not every failure is worth crying over. I will give myself some time and try again.

The forgetting the license made me giggle because I attended a friend's wedding and ended up helping with the set up (they paid for my hotel room and I can't stand not helping) and right as they were doing the last run through of the ceremony they realized they forgot to bring the license. My friend gave me her room key and I ran to the hotel, grabbed the license, and ran back to the church. Got to hand it to the pastor, he knew to ask about it during the final run down, though it does make me wonder how many weddings he officiated before he made it his policy to ask about it.

Some of the things that happened in my parents' marriage:
    - I was one year and just when my mother got ready she had to undress because I started crying because I was hungry
    - My cousin, who was three at the time (and who was going to get married this year kkk) didn't want to be part of the wedding but in the last minute he decided he wanted to participate, and they had to change everything when the wedding was starting
    - My cousins ran in the church during the ceremony and we can only hear their screams on the tape
    - My uncles (my mother and my father brothers, both called André) emptied all the bottles in my grandparents house (my family produced wine that time, so it was really a lot of alcohol)
    - My parents forgot to sign the papers during the ceremony, so they actually just got married one day later when they went back to do it
There are more things, but I don't remember. But they never forgot.

2:36 I think it's really telling of how prolific heteronormativity is that two bisexual, LGBT advocating, amazingly inclusive and accepting people still think "bride and groom" and not "wedding couple" or something inclusive of gay marriage/gender non-conforming people.
This really ISNT an attack and I think they're two of the most lovely inclusive people, I'm not having a go at them in any way or even saying they've done anything wrong. I'm just pointing out how even tiny things like that contribute to compulsory heterosexuality and that these are the things that hopefully will fade out.

I agree and really appreciate this comment. I noticed that they said that and it's honestly really common for a lot of people to make that same assumption or have their language reflect heteronormativity - ESPECIALLY with weddings. As a gay nonbinary person, weddings feel very alienating to me because of how cisheternormative and binary they are.

    • @pinkneko13
      @pinkneko13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think it's reflective of the genders of the wedding couple to be honest, like pronouns, you don't need to make everyone refer to themselves as they, them just the people that want to, the liberty is for people who are non-binary to be able to refer to themselves as a wedding couple rather than bride and groom, I think for Jamie it is very valuable to refer to himself as a "groom", because he can, because he is able to. Weddings are centred around the couple that is getting married, that is the point, so of course if the bride and groom are a woman and a man albeit not cis then it is obvious they'll refer to themselves as such. I know you need that validation, anyone under the LGBT+ umbrella needs it, but this occasion isn't for anyone else but the wedding couple, it's their day, their moment. People are gathered there to celebrate their union. I understand where you are coming and respect it, but I don't agree.

Best part about my husband's and my wedding - we were not making a heck-ton of money, and while his family is pretty well off, I didn't want them to pay for literally everything, so I was finding ways to save money where I could. I decided to get fake flowers instead of real ones, because they were SO EXPENSIVE! What was awesome was people could take the centerpieces home and they still have them to this day - and I also still have my bouquet, since the flowers won't rot!
It also helped us out with the fact that we had 2 days of "wedding" - the first was the ceremony with limited guests. I have an extremely small family and my husband's is gigantic. We didn't want it being super awkward with his very traditional family insisting on the "bride/groom side" so we had about 30 people for the ceremony at an outdoor park; his immediate family only and I invited some friends to help balance the his-to-mine ratio. Then, on day 2, it was just the party, and everyone could come because we just sat them at tables and all was good. To this day we get told on a regular basis that our wedding was the best wedding people had been to - but that in and of itself has become a bit of a fail. We were told our wedding was the best wedding ever... AT ANOTHER WEDDING! D: I was also told that I was the best looking person at someone else's wedding (I was not wearing white at least...) which I have very low self-esteem, so it was this awkward moment of "yay, a compliment!" followed by "but.... THE BRIDE!!!" D: (and in case you're thinking "oh, they probably just meant besides the bride..." no... no they specifically said my dress was nicer than the bride's. They didn't say it in front of the wedding party, but to this day I fear that comment was made to them at some point and that I made someone else's day bad. :(

Our wedding went really well, we did a tower of cupcakes instead of a cake. We gently fed each other bites of cake, then danced.
After the wedding I was told that very few people got any cupcake, even though there were a Lot. Turns out my husband's crazy aunt gave the other guests less than 5 minutes to claim their cupcakes, and then she asked for cake boxes and stole them. All. I went back for a cupcake later and was told they were gone. I assumed the guests went hard. Nope, she smuggled them to her car during the first dance.
She doesn't come to family events any more, but the cupcakes weren't even the worst/oddest thing she's done.
    I wish I got a full cupcake.

My sister had a cathedral length veil for her wedding and it got caught on a snag in the floor on the way out. It fell out of her hair and her husband grabbed it, rolled it up, and kept walking. No one noticed and it didn’t even tear! She was embarrassed but honestly I thought it was very cute how quickly her husband fixed it, and now they have something to chuckle at. I still dream of having a cathedral length veil one day though, despite her problems with it 😂

My parents were so annoyed that I didn't get a marriage licensee for my wedding but I still had a small formal wedding over looking a beach. My uncle who is a pastor told me he liked that idea because he hates that now people don't considered themselves married without the states approval.
I'm an atheist but we both agree with each other on that. We didn't need state approval for thousands of years. Why should we now? becaue of taxes? pfft...no. If you hold a ceremony and you say vows, guess what..it still counts.
