I feel the urge to clarify the “periods have tiny baby bits in it” part, just in case! Yes, there are tissue bits in period blood. That’s the uterus lining that builds up each month in preparation for a potential pregnancy. If there’s no pregnancy, out goes the old lining and those are the thicker bits and pieces one can see in period blood.
Those can also be caused by too much blood passing through the uterine wall too quickly for the body to expel, resulting in clumps and "clots", which can be indicative of problems like PCOS. If you're passing large clumps on a regular basis throughout your period and it remains very heavy, as opposed to passing small solids for the first day or two, you should see a doctor.

There is such a national bias in the "leg and armpit hair on women is gross" ideology, too. In many countries around the world, women do NOT shave these areas of their bodies. And a historical bias as well since the idea of a woman having to shave armpits and legs is a fairly recent one.

I think that's a sweet and completely respectable question...if you're 12! We have to bleed, so can we save lives with it? Great to want to help people, but yeah, once you've reached adulthood and understand proper sanitation it shouldn't even be a question anymore.
@@krystlepoulin6382 it's not just an issue of sanitation, as I recall from health class, period "blood" isn't actually blood. People just call it that because it's red and comes out of the body. Maybe it contains some blood but that's likely not a substantial amount for donation and you'd have to extract the blood from the substance. This reminded me of one time when my cis male friend asked if he could ask me questions about periods that he had always wanted to ask but never had the courage too. I was like, "sure, go ahead!" He asked a number of questions, and then asked what was the worst part of getting your period, like, what hurt the most. I told him that each person has it differently, everyone's experiences with periods are different, but that to me, personally, the worst part is the lower back pain. He then had the guts to reply with, "I disagree. I think the worst part must be the cramps". And I was like "EXCUSE ME? You 'DISAGREE'??" I stg the audacity! I took a deep breath and explained to him that he was mansplaining something that he couldn't possibly know anything about and all that. I tried to be patient, but I swear I wanted to punch him in the face that very moment.

To be fair that drawing was a fashion plate from the victorian era. It's an idealised (and highly exagerated) image the same way today fashion advertisement is idealised... Nobody actually expected women to look like that.

Given the size of the sleeves, that fashion plate is from no later than 1896. The Gibson Girl was being illustrated a couple of years later and boomed right around the turn of the century. It’s more Edwardian (1901-1910).
But oh, did some people try. A Little House book had Laura's mother tut-tutting her for her erratic corset usage. "Your Pa could span my waist with both hands when he married me." Of course, Laura rightfully snarked, "He can't anymore, but he still seems to like you."

The one about our periods containing fetal material got me. I would have thought in the 21st century it would be common knowledge that you get your period because you’re not pregnant so how can it contain fetal material 🤔
The only reason I can explain this to myself is that our teacher said that sometimes an egg gets fertalized but you don't get pregnant (I don't know the right words in English bit I hope you know what I mean), so then the next time you have your period there also is the fertalized egg. But does that count as baby bits? I don't think so, I mean it's so small you wouldn't even see it.
Okay, so I can explain that drawing. Firstly, it’s just a drawing, so the proportions generally aren’t accurate. Think of our modern fashion drawings- they aren’t accurate proportions either. This is from 1894-1896, at the very height of the poof when it comes to sleeves. As for the teeny tiny waist- when women would wear these fashions, it was mostly an illusion. Tight lacing if corsets was pretty rare, generally only done by the Kardashian types of the day, abs even then only for events. Also, if you see a photograph and think “how is that even possible to have a waist that small?” Well, it’s not. They did alter photographs back then. See Bernadette Banner’s latest video for info on that. But the illusion comes from having padded busts, massive sleeves and padded hips. You don’t need to tight lace a corset if everything else is already making your waist look a lot smaller in comparison. And women back then were not shy about adding a bit of padding to make their bods look the way they wanted. At the time, it was more about shape than size- and that shape was actually accessible to a lot more women than what current beauty standards are. So don’t be too bothered by the drawing. It is already a little exaggerated (as all fashion drawings were and still are), but even then, it’s still mostly illusion.
One that I read on this subreddit that I’ve brought up in real life only to find a SHOCKING amount of cis men who also thought this: periods are just like pee and you should be able to hold them in until you go to the toilet. The irl men didn’t believe the “should” part just thought it was possible.

the thing about the drawing with a corset is that the same reason that picture was drawn like that is the same as why fashion industry uses photoshop: un-real ideals. but also as an added side note; biggest reason why the waist looks so tiny is the proportions of the rest of the outfit huge sleeves, etc.
Fashion drawings have been unrealistic proportion wise for a very long time. They still are. And as someone who wears similar styles (with slightly less sleeve poof) as my regular wardrobe- it really is just an illusion. I wear a corset to support my back (as I’m severely disabled from a degenerative spinal condition), but my waist measurement is maybe an inch smaller than without it? In some corsets, it’s actually bigger, thanks to the added bulk of the corset itself. And yet, thanks to padding and smart tailoring, my body looks like an extreme hourglass, with a small waist. It’s not because it’s actually any smaller, it’s just an illusion. But even photos of the time were also unrealistic and “photoshopped”, just like today. It was actually pretty easy to change the size of the waist, just like some people do now. Basically- the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Fashion drawings have always been disproportionate and emphasised the beauty standard of the time. It doesn’t reflect reality, and was never meant to.
Oh these were scary. I sent a few screenshots to my husband. Especially poignant today as I started my period. My 4 sons and my husband are very well versed in the facts surrounding periods. Mine is excruciating so I was able to see the value in teaching them to understand the facts and to be sympathetic.
I did this with my children as well. My son's wife was so surprised at how well he understood what she was going through when they were first dating and she was cramping.

My 18 year old son is a conundrum I’m a lot of ways, he’s my most selfish and my most generous all in one, but he will make me tea, fill up my hot water bottle, run my bath etc… when it’s that rime of the month (literally an hour ago he ran me a bath).
@@missnaomi613 oh I have, I am doing my pre op soon, I’m scheduled for a full hysterectomy. I have endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and uterine fibroids. Thankfully I blessed enough to have 4 kids so I’m done with those parts and ready to not be in excruciating pain every 3 weeks or so.

The talk about periods reminds me of when we went to a water park with my family and just beforehand my mother found out she was on her period so she told us we had to go by ourselves. My brother asks if she couldn’t skip it this time 😂
The one at 1:42 is actually a fashion plate from the 1890s. Fashion plates were meant to display the fashionable silhouette at the time by exaggerating proportions to really get the point across. It’s not meant to be a realistic representation of of women, or what they looked like in the 1890s. Hope this helps.

I just wrote a reply to someone else about this, so: How much body hair you get and how fast your facial hair grows is totally down to genetics, partly inherited, partly luck of the draw. And it changes slowly over time. I'm cis and I didn't have to shave daily until my 40s. In my 20s it was only once a week. My chest hair isn't all that thick. And that's totally normal. Some guys turn into gorillas within 5 years of hitting puberty, others take a good 10 years to grow all of their body hair. So if you ever have moments when you wonder if T is even doing anything, reread my comment and remember that it takes time even for us cis guys. And congrats!
@@John_Weiss Yes, many people forget that T just causes a second puberty, so the amount of time can vary a lot and it will inevitably not cause immediately visible or audible changes. After all, puberty takes years.
I really hope it was a joke but this is by far not the first time I hear about this weird idea that women pee out of their vagina, and every time I hear it I always wonder... What do these people believe how pregnancies work? Where's the uterus? Do they think the baby grows in the mother's bladder, just floating around in pee? And if the mom doesn't drink enough and the bladder gets to empty, does the baby just dry out, like a giant raisin?☠️
@@maryasenlin5916 well, it DOES work. For example, in ferrets (and probably a number of other mammal species too), the urethra ends in the vagina, but very close to the opening. So technically, they pee out of their vagina. Just for an extremely short distance though and the vagina itself isn't connected to the bladder ofc.

hey, very quickly: that drawing of a "victorian" woman (around 1:40 ) wasn't trying to depict reality; instead, it was meant to be an exaggeration to show what the fashionable sillouette of the period looked like (big poofy bits at the chest and upper sleeves, that slims down towards the waist and lower arms, and a narrower skirt) They actually didn't mean to imply that waists would be that tiny in real life, and are also a perfect example of optical illusion used in clothing (by making those "puffy bits", the waist seems smaller in comparison) just felt like clarifying because unfortunately historical fashion facts aren't always that well known and can lead to some misinterpretation 😁❤️

I'd disagree on the "don't explain people's anatomy to them if you don't have it" Plenty of people don't know about many aspects of their anatomy (not only when it comes to vulvas). You don't need to have the body part to study it. Just, in general, don't try to explain stuff to people if you don't have a good reason to believe you're more educated on the topic. And try google every once in a while
We all have/have had, those "I wonder why..." moments. In the past, before google, we used to ask grand-parents, parents, older siblings or friends. If no-one could give us the answer, we used to go to libraries, do research and become informed/educated. Now, the proverb 'ignorance is bliss' doesn't apply to lots of people. They're arrogantly angry in their ignorance.

The third pic (of the dress) is actually an Edwardian piece. The thin waist was the “style” of the time. This look was often achieved through corsets (rarely tight laced) and padding. In the drawing, the unrealistically small waist was probably less not understanding anatomy and more exaggerating the popular style. Still not an actuate depiction though, just a fun piece of trivia :)
Well, I was against periods when my children were all born and I kept on having them (heavy and painful) for another 25 years. The periods, I mean, not the children. I really did want to cancel that subscription.

Some people don't have any bits in their periods (me for example) and it's just only liquid or slimy.

There is such a national bias in the "leg and armpit hair on women is gross" ideology, too. In many countries around the world, women do NOT shave these areas of their bodies. And a historical bias as well since the idea of a woman having to shave armpits and legs is a fairly recent one.

Maybe it contains some blood but that's likely not a substantial amount for donation and you'd have to extract the blood from the substance. This reminded me of one time when my cis male friend asked if he could ask me questions about periods that he had always wanted to ask but never had the courage too. I was like, "sure, go ahead!" He asked a number of questions, and then asked what was the worst part of getting your period, like, what hurt the most. I told him that each person has it differently, everyone's experiences with periods are different, but that to me, personally, the worst part is the lower back pain. He then had the guts to reply with, "I disagree. I think the worst part must be the cramps". And I was like "EXCUSE ME? You 'DISAGREE'??" I stg the audacity! I took a deep breath and explained to him that he was mansplaining something that he couldn't possibly know anything about and all that. I tried to be patient, but I swear I wanted to punch him in the face that very moment.

Given the size of the sleeves, that fashion plate is from no later than 1896. The Gibson Girl was being illustrated a couple of years later and boomed right around the turn of the century. It’s more Edwardian (1901-1910).
But oh, did some people try. A Little House book had Laura's mother tut-tutting her for her erratic corset usage. "Your Pa could span my waist with both hands when he married me." Of course, Laura rightfully snarked, "He can't anymore, but he still seems to like you."

The one about our periods containing fetal material got me. I would have thought in the 21st century it would be common knowledge that you get your period because you’re not pregnant so how can it contain fetal material 🤔
The only reason I can explain this to myself is that our teacher said that sometimes an egg gets fertalized but you don't get pregnant (I don't know the right words in English bit I hope you know what I mean), so then the next time you have your period there also is the fertalized egg. Okay, so I can explain that drawing. Firstly, it’s just a drawing, so the proportions generally aren’t accurate. Think of our modern fashion drawings- they aren’t accurate proportions either.
This is from 1894-1896, at the very height of the poof when it comes to sleeves. As for the teeny tiny waist- when women would wear these fashions, it was mostly an illusion. Tight lacing if corsets was pretty rare, generally only done by the Kardashian types of the day, abs even then only for events. Also, if you see a photograph and think “how is that even possible to have a waist that small?” Well, it’s not. They did alter photographs back then. See Bernadette Banner’s latest video for info on that.
But the illusion comes from having padded busts, massive sleeves and padded hips. You don’t need to tight lace a corset if everything else is already making your waist look a lot smaller in comparison. And women back then were not shy about adding a bit of padding to make their bods look the way they wanted. At the time, it was more about shape than size- and that shape was actually accessible to a lot more women than what current beauty standards are.
So don’t be too bothered by the drawing. It is already a little exaggerated (as all fashion drawings were and still are), but even then, it’s still mostly illusion.

the thing about the drawing with a corset is that the same reason that picture was drawn like that is the same as why fashion industry uses photoshop: un-real ideals. but also as an added side note; biggest reason why the waist looks so tiny is the proportions of the rest of the outfit huge sleeves, etc.
Fashion drawings have been unrealistic proportion wise for a very long time. They still are.
And as someone who wears similar styles (with slightly less sleeve poof) as my regular wardrobe- it really is just an illusion. I wear a corset to support my back (as I’m severely disabled from a degenerative spinal condition), but my waist measurement is maybe an inch smaller than without it? In some corsets, it’s actually bigger, thanks to the added bulk of the corset itself. And yet, thanks to padding and smart tailoring, my body looks like an extreme hourglass, with a small waist. It’s not because it’s actually any smaller, it’s just an illusion.
But even photos of the time were also unrealistic and “photoshopped”, just like today. It was actually pretty easy to change the size of the waist, just like some people do now. Basically- the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh these were scary. I sent a few screenshots to my husband. Especially poignant today as I started my period. My 4 sons and my husband are very well versed in the facts surrounding periods. Mine is excruciating so I was able to see the value in teaching them to understand the facts and to be sympathetic.
I did this with my children as well. My son's wife was so surprised at how well he understood what she was going through when they were first dating and she was cramping.

My 18 year old son is a conundrum I’m a lot of ways, he’s my most selfish and my most generous all in one, but he will make me tea, fill up my hot water bottle, run my bath etc… when it’s that rime of the month (literally an hour ago he ran me a bath).

How much body hair you get and how fast your facial hair grows is totally down to genetics, partly inherited, partly luck of the draw. And it changes slowly over time. I'm cis and I didn't have to shave daily until my 40s. In my 20s it was only once a week. My chest hair isn't all that thick.
And that's totally normal.
Some guys turn into gorillas within 5 years of hitting puberty, others take a good 10 years to grow all of their body hair. So if you ever have moments when you wonder if T is even doing anything, reread my comment and remember that it takes time even for us cis guys.

@@John_Weiss Yes, many people forget that T just causes a second puberty, so the amount of time can vary a lot and it will inevitably not cause immediately visible or audible changes. After all, puberty takes years.

I really hope it was a joke but this is by far not the first time I hear about this weird idea that women pee out of their vagina, and every time I hear it I always wonder... What do these people believe how pregnancies work? Where's the uterus? Do they think the baby grows in the mother's bladder, just floating around in pee? And if the mom doesn't drink enough and the bladder gets to empty, does the baby just dry out, like a giant raisin?☠️
If pee comes from the vagina, then pee is also stored in the balls. I see no problem there lol
@@maryasenlin5916 well, it DOES work. For example, in ferrets (and probably a number of other mammal species too), the urethra ends in the vagina, but very close to the opening. So technically, they pee out of their vagina. Just for an extremely short distance though and the vagina itself isn't connected to the bladder ofc.
@Lady Seashell Bikini I kinda understand the initial confusion of men because they don't have a third hole. Sperm also exits through the urethra. It's still stupid or at least shameful for the education system when adult men (or even women for that matter) don't know better.

My armpit hair is natural, healthy, and serves a function. The inflamed ingrown hairs I had when I shaved my armpits were unhealthy.

hey, very quickly: that drawing of a "victorian" woman (around 1:40 ) wasn't trying to depict reality; instead, it was meant to be an exaggeration to show what the fashionable sillouette of the period looked like (big poofy bits at the chest and upper sleeves, that slims down towards the waist and lower arms, and a narrower skirt)
They actually didn't mean to imply that waists would be that tiny in real life, and are also a perfect example of optical illusion used in clothing (by making those "puffy bits", the waist seems smaller in comparison)
just felt like clarifying because unfortunately historical fashion facts aren't always that well known and can lead to some misinterpretation 😁❤️

Plenty of people don't know about many aspects of their anatomy (not only when it comes to vulvas). You don't need to have the body part to study it.

The third pic (of the dress) is actually an Edwardian piece. The thin waist was the “style” of the time. This look was often achieved through corsets (rarely tight laced) and padding. In the drawing, the unrealistically small waist was probably less not understanding anatomy and more exaggerating the popular style. Still not an actuate depiction though, just a fun piece of trivia :)
Well, I was against periods when my children were all born and I kept on having them (heavy and painful) for another 25 years. The periods, I mean, not the children. I really did want to cancel that subscription.
You should check out some of the art on the older Marvel comics, the anatomy for both men and women is wildly inaccurate

The "We don't pee out of our vaginas" one reminded me of how in highschool some guy in my class was arguing with a girl about how many holes women have, claiming that women pee out of their vaginas. I asked him "Are you really going to argue with a girl about female anatomy?"
