  • Full Tour of a homestead that's been 8 years in the making! We tore down a one room school house, built a new house, turned an old rusty corn crib into a barn, put gardens in, and turned a weed patch into a pasture. Now it's home.

      @@searose6192 the average cost for an acre of land in the US is $3020 USD. It's cheaper if you find one with an ugly, old building, because the owners don't want to pay to move it.

    Y’all’s journey speaks to my heart. It’s very real and purposeful. I have nothing against people who got youtube money and built a big ol farm but that’s not relatable for me. I wish you TH-cam success as an income source but you did this in an obtainable way without having that first. Your channel is encouraging and I appreciate your time and willingness to share your experiences with us.

      Thank you for the encouragement! That means a lot! Yes...We had no idea at the time that we would be doing TH-cam in the future😊 We were planning to sell produce and farm products, but with Michelle's health and some other factors, we felt like that lifestyle was too stressful for us. God led us into this...we love teaching others. Thanks for your support.

    We're in NE Ohio doing something kind of similar. We bought our 7 acres in 2018 and we've been clearing back the mostly wooded property bit by bit while working 60 hour weeks an hour from home 😅 I always said I wanted my property mostly wooded so I can choose what to keep and what to clear but I have this FOMO of wishing I could have started projects years ago that we are just getting around to today.

    • @morethanfarmers

    You did a great job! Suggestion for the swamp: if you have the time and money later, you could empty it of the brush and build a pond that you add some catfish to. They will grow and populate so you could homestead fish as well. You also then wouldn't have to worry about flooding as much. My grandparents live in Iowa and built a pond on their property. He only adds more baby fish once in a great while and they are able to catch and do some amazing fish fries with the whole family

The extra information that you provided about the development and building process was very interesting. Beautiful journey. Have you thought about turning your swamp into a pond and raising fish? Make the wet areas work for you. The cows can utilize the pond for drinking and swimming. Your ducks or other water birds can utilize it as well. You can raise fish which you can eat and sell.And the best part is you and your family will have a place to swim...as well....

      Great idea:) You'd hafta convince Michelle though about the pond. She's worried about having a pond with toddlers running around:) Maybe someday!

      @@morethanfarmers simple solution is a chicken electric fence around the pond...

      @@morethanfarmers but also adding cat tails around the edges and making the edges shallow too..benefit is that you can use cat tails for flour and other things too..teaching the kids to swim also...or adding a small temporary fence will help too...but the amount of fish you can grow is amazing,it will bring in beneficial wildlife that's great for the garden and bees...your bees will have plenty of water during the really hot days..so many benefits from a Pond and your using space that doesn't really get used...

    Your back pasture is better because of the swamp and accompanying forest.. Slow steady release of water and nutrients into it..

    Meant to be.
    The average walnut tree starts to produce nuts at an age of 8-10 years. However, there are cases in which walnut trees start to produce about 15-22 lbs. (7-10 kg) of nuts at an age of 5-7 years. Most commercial walnut orchards reach their peak production level at an age of 30 years or more.

    I heard tell that you don't want to plant any food plants around the walnut trees. Because if you don't pick up after your tree and leave left over nuts on the ground as they break down they will leach out toxic chemical. Look it up to see what you can plant next to them.

    • @jenbear8652
      @jenbear8652 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s called juglone (sp?) and it’s not just what falls from the walnut (or related trees). It’s in the soil around the roots too. You can look online to find out what plants are juglone tolerant. For example, I have black walnuts growing wild on my property & black raspberries & pawpaw are also growing wild right next to them. So you just have to look up what to plant near and what not to plant near walnut trees.
